He was more than just a brilliant musician, he was a good man. I saw him play in Sydney in the 1970s and a fan jumped up on stage with security on his tail but Rory told them to back off and let the kid sing the whole song with him. That's a generous guy and I've been to hundreds of gigs in my life, I've never seen any performer do that .
Saw him in the early 70s and I’ll never forget him. Paid for a .99 cent concert and he followed an about to be famous band. When they were done most of the people left and there were 20 to 30 of us left. Didn’t know Rory, but I felt bad for him so I stuck around. He played a long set undeterred by the absence of a crowd. He hopped off of the stage and was running around smashing himself into people including myself, we all had a blast. No way you couldn’t love him for his personality and incredible guitar skills.
Rory Gallagher to me the king seen and met him the very 1st time at whiskey a go go Hollywood ca 1972 I was 16 years old my friend's Dave, Louie from Los lobos also were there I'll never forget Rory Gallagher humble AND just a nice man I must have seen him 20 times at least. Love you Rory Gallagher
thank you Daniel...saw your Uncle Rory the night after my marriage in Toronto,Ontario September 15, 1979..had been a huge fan and he had been a huge influence on my playing from the '74 Irish Tour album..my wife and I had purchased tickets and thought what better way to start out our marriage...still married...still playin' my ass off these 37 years later....cheers/slainte.. ..you should feel nothing but proud...
Rory at the Sporthalle in Cologne Germany 1978 was the first time I saw him live and my first concert ever. Came on stage as ever, jeans, sneakers and a timber shirt, the usual Rory. Looked nothing special I thought in my 14yo mind. But what he did in the following three(!) hours impacted me for the rest of my life. Thanks big man, you will forever be in my heart and my soul.
17 and I was listening to some great early 70s bands....I was happy with life and music was wonderful. I switched on the radio of a BBC radio1 live in concert with Rory and caught the solo of hands up.....high powered beautiful melodic guitar had suddenly exploded in my head.....this was like driving an F1 car after being used to a ford Capri.......And the rest was history....RORY GALLAGHER, simply the best.
Thanks Daniel ,really appreciate the love that you show for your Uncle. I had the honor of seeing him with Taste around Christmas '78 in London. Amazing Guitarist and Humble Person. Hugely underrated player, but, I suspect he would not have wanted it any other way. R.I.P. Rory
he was an amazing man and always be remembered for his untold talent and the lovely man he was i remember back in the 70s when he played at luton tech with genesis as support at that time he made time for me and we had a pint together with my girlfriend at the time paula ,wonderful memories
Rory was 'the real deal'! Had the pleasure of seeing him live in the early 80's, and it was a religious experience. He was 'a musician's musician'! A real legend.
holding an playing brian mays red special would be equally as awesome as Brian got the sound an the idea of a normal channel up full vox ac30 and a treble booster from rory Gallagher
I didn't have to aggressively sweat on my Strat to make the finish come off. All I had to do was buy a shitty 1980s one. The paint started chipping about a month after I got it.
This guy was a class act meet him back stage during a uso show worked security that night told me I feel very safe with u guys around still remember that great night 4 me
Mark I agree 1000%...Rory was the guitarist...guitarist!!! He never swayed, he stayed true to his music, his fans and especially those he himself admired.....and his humbleness was unmatched....I tear up just thinking about such a legend.....what an honor for me to have seen him live 4 times at the old Waldorf in San Francisco mid to late 70s....and thanku to his nephew for putting this up for his fans to see......my alltime favorite guitarist.
Seeing Rory's beat-up Strat made me cry: I had a 1966 Tele which I played all over Europe since 1986 until it looked just as fucked. It was my goal To make it look like Rory's axe through incessant gigging and travelling and playing and living. To me it looked and sounded the bollocks. I sold it in 2007 and the money went all up my nose and in my bloodstream. I have done plenty of stupid things in my life, but selling that guitar ranks undoubtely in the top three, ex-aequo......
Thanks a million, Daniel for the great stories about your uncle, the God-blessed and exteremeemly talented Rory Gallagher, he was a very rare human being, there was only one Rory Gallagher and that is for sure
The title of the video suggests an interview with a Gallagher family member about Rory's guitars. Said video delivers that, which happens to be a very nice, civil, heartfelt and earnest interview, and people give it a thumbs down? I don't understand that. I really don't.
Never before in the history of humankind there was every anyone like the Mighty Rory Gallager and at no time in the future will there be someone like our Rory. Before I switched on this video I was suffering from triple toothaches, crippling back pain, hungry, cold and tired after working for 47.50 hours nonstop. My dog had been howling outside my front door for hours. My neighbour’s were knocking on my windows asking me to come out and fight if I was man enough. My bank account was heavily overdrawn and i was in deep trouble, the bank manager was on the phone asking for all his money back immediately otherwise he was going to send the heavy boys in to talk with me. The hens had stopped laying eggs, the cow had run off with the pigs, donkey and horse and there was nothing left in the farmyard. The postman refused to deliver my letters. The weather was overcast and stormy, I had no food in the house, no gas to boil the kettle for a nice cup of tea. The whiskey bottle was empty and I was all on my own, not a stick of furniture in my house. But by the time this story about Rory was coming to an end. The room inside my house light up and all my worries, pains and aces had totally disappeared. I had grown a full long head of hair again. I never had so much money in my account, the bank manager rang up to just say hello and ask how his very favorite customer. The hens are now laying 2 eggs each per day. The cow, horse, donkeys and pigs have all returned back to the farm and are completely content and happy. This all happened because of the power of God gifted 7th son of a 7th son RORY GALLAGHER ,who once again worked one of his many miracles and made everything hunky-dory again
im going to the rory fest in Irland. this year. where these guitars can be seen , i would absolutly love them. I m travel from Bilbao , Spain to the festival in May
Saw Rory @armadillo world hdqtrs.Austin,Tx. circa 1975..he had a small fender amp he put on a chair& miked it thru the house p.a.-his sound was huge&he played impeccably..one of the better concerts i've witnessed in over 40 yrs.!!!
I had the honor of seeing him in 1974. He was brilliant and I really miss him to this day. Why did he have to die? So gifted and what a great guy. RIP, Rory G
Thanks Daniel. Rory's lives on through that Strat. So sad that he's no longer here in person, but he's here through his music. Just watched the Rick Wakeman interview with Brian May... and it's clear how open and honest Rory was with budding guitarists. His spirit lingers...
If I'm not mistaken, Daniel seems to have that same honesty and integrity that Rory had. His accent, by the way, seems to sound more English than Irish.
btw I saw Rory 4 times from 75-77 once @ a small college in East Pennsylvania w/ S. Quo opening on a sweltering July night yet he was wearing a long shelve shit under a denin jacket, was soaked thru on 1st song, every show of his was brilliant and left me ecstatic, never be another Rory!
Wow! What a great presentation! Thank you! That strat is just toooooooo muuuuuuuuuch! I love his music. A huge influence on me. "Pay no attention to trends and always be natural."(para) That's the best advice I have ever heard! Thanks again!
The Holy grail! The greatest guitar player ever, and from what everyone says,a fantastic man as well Glad I discovered Rory, even ordered a strat, and before Rory I couldn't stand them. Long live Mr Gallagher
I am no Strat expert but have owned a few of them and still play them the pickguard on this guitar is different than a 61 sometime in 63 they change the screw hole pattern in the pickguard they moved it closer to the middle pickup instead of between the neck and middle. I read once he said the the truss rod and never been touched since the day he got it pretty amazing. Great wood a marriage between the neck and the body. Wish I could have seen him live.
What a beautiful axe. My 1961 Jazz Bass is damn near wore as much as his Strat. I've gigged that bass 52 weeks a year since 1988. And, it's all still original, too. Even the pickups.
This guitar is currently on display at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame(Along with many other famous guitars). If you can make it, I'd highly recommend a visit.
If you make music and you really believe in your sound, if you want it to be long lasting, don't pay attention to trends. It's just play, write, and do as you do. Couldn't say it better myself and that's truly something everyone, those who play and obsess over coveted gear mostly, could take away from this video.
Fender gave Rory a new guitar because they were embarrassed by the one he was playing, had me laughing out loud! Of course Fender started reproducing the "relics", then they weren't so embarrassed .

Trilling is also easier with a soft plectrum 0.71 Nylon or similar . These harmonics are very quiet unless you are well cranked into overdrive distortion !!
Nicole, I saw live quit a few times in the 70's. In Guitar Player Rory said he'd replaced the bridge pickup on the Strat. It stuck out being bright white next to the aged patina of the original pickups and pick gaurd. If you notice the color it's pinkish yellow. Not beige or nicotine stained. It's said that it was from Rory's blood, he'd cut himself on a bridge adjustment screw, or wear himself raw playing his heart out! And besides being a great guy and incredible artist he was the 1st one I'd ever saw playing a beat up guitar onstage. The rest copied him. Want to hear some decent Rory Gallagher style playing nowadays? Check out Davy Knowles

Tools of your trade Not in the same league but I have a spanner I used for thirty years day in day out as a mechanical engineer. Must have loosened and tightened many bolts with it. It's actually bent from all the use from my right hand and arm . Bought the day I started my training in 1973 still have and use it now 2020

While the guitar may be special to Rory's sound, it was Rory's talent (heart and soul) that made it sound beautiful.
Amen
jpb962 no, in fact, that guitar is magical...

Hi
I am in Toronto, and I was there too!

I have tears watching this video but I'm happy for having met the man through his music. We still meet often.
Thank you Brother.
Rory was 'the real deal'! Had the pleasure of seeing him live in the early 80's, and it was a religious experience. He was 'a musician's musician'! A real legend.
The best ever , saw Rory live in Adelaide in 1979 he put on the best show I have ever seen

Holding that Strat would be like holding the Holy Grail.
+tp10488 Yep

This guy was a class act meet him back stage during a uso show worked security that night told me I feel very safe with u guys around still remember that great night 4 me
NO VALUE can be assessed for that guitar as an important Historical Object. ... It's absolutely PRICELESS.
Mark Marsh yep. And the grandkids will sell it.

It's worth whatever somebody will pay for it.
I will never see/hear a better night than the night I saw Rory. No one has rocked like him before or since.

Brilliant. I love the love in these kinds of things. That Strat was Rory's voice for eternity!
im going to the rory fest in Irland. this year. where these guitars can be seen , i would absolutly love them. I m travel from Bilbao , Spain to the festival in May
First saw him in 74 at Glasgow Opollo and again 75 76 77, and first concert I took my younger brother to - influenced him as. Guitarist
Just a beatiful thing, knowing that Rory sweat playing his hart like always on that instrument, a Relic Just beatiful.
Performer, singer, songwriter, guitar player, harmonica, mandolin, acoustic guitar... Did I forget anything? For me, one of the greatest! 🙏🏻
Rory was not only amazing but he took the word Relic to new dimensions!
Saw Rory, Gerry and Wilgar at the Dagenham Roundhouse in 1972 and have been a fan ever since.
Saw Rory @armadillo world hdqtrs.Austin,Tx. circa 1975..he had a small fender amp he put on a chair& miked it thru the house p.a.-his sound was huge&he played impeccably..one of the better concerts i've witnessed in over 40 yrs.!!!

It is a totally English accent from the home counties area if England.
Love Rory's playing.
THE BEST guitarist ever
Rory Gallagher is the Guitarist by which all others are Judged.... Genius level Guitarist Period!
Rory's guitar proves its not the instrument its the player and he was one of the best.
Rory!!
One of the greatest slide players or any guitar playing period
I Love Rory
As a kid growing up playing guitar I always knew Roy Gallagher is the greatest unknown guitar player and that he was!
I was there when Rory played live in a place near Nürnberg Germany called
Hemmerleinhalle Neukirchen am Brand
Think it was between 79 and 83👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
btw I saw Rory 4 times from 75-77 once @ a small college in East Pennsylvania w/ S. Quo opening on a sweltering July night yet he was wearing a long shelve shit under a denin jacket, was soaked thru on 1st song, every show of his was brilliant and left me ecstatic, never be another Rory!

That strat is just toooooooo muuuuuuuuuch!
I love his music. A huge influence on me.
"Pay no attention to trends and always be natural."(para)
That's the best advice I have ever heard!
Thanks again!
Very informative, and what a great player & singer, I saw him several times over the yrs here in Auckland New Zealand
The Holy grail!
The greatest guitar player ever, and from what everyone says,a fantastic man as well
Glad I discovered Rory,even ordered a strat,and before Rory I couldn't stand them.
Long live Mr Gallagher
Fantastic job Daniel!
I'm grateful for this interview. Thank you Daniel and Guitarist.

If I could touch that Fender just once to get as close as possible to Rory's DNA!
Thanks Daniel!
As somebody who loves Patina on old cars this is about the most beautiful Strat i have ever seen.
Rory proved that you don't need tens of guitars, you just need the one to master. He was one with his guitar.
Going to my hometown don't care even if i have to walk...... thank you for the insight Daniel, thankyou, for posting
BEST GUITARIST OF ALL TIME! ImLOVE YOU RORY......🎸👊🏾👏🏽⭐️😬
@2:40 maybe because Rory's sweat was probably 1 part Guinness Stout, 2 parts Irish Whisky
Fender gave Rory a new guitar because they were embarrassed by the one he was playing, had me laughing out loud! Of course Fender started reproducing the "relics", then they weren't so embarrassed .
Amazing interview.
Rory's Glories - Interview w/ Daniel Gallagher about Rory's Guitars💕
RUclips I love you this is more than worth the price of admission. Rory G his legend will live 4evr. His nephew is the salt of the earth.
Tha HOLY GRAIL ALRIGHT!!! I wish l could play it.. 😳I'd be in HEAVEN.......🎸👊🏾😬⭐️👏🏽
I would love to hold that Strat!
Very solid point there at the end.
He loved that Strat every show I have is with that guitar
Timeless
A REAL musician a real man yes, a real guitar.
Talk about counting the rings on a hunk of wood ... wow that strat had a lot to say! Definitely will be digging deeply into to Rory's content
I think Rorys greatest accomplishment is by all accounts he was a fine human being, you cant top that.
Guitars are just wood and steal, put it in the hands of a Rory Gallagher and thats where the magic comes from.
Great video Daniel.
fascinating documentary
That Guitar should be sealed in a block of clear resin , Set in a chapel , put in a locked vault & brought out once a day under the care of an Armed Guard . . . that no mere mortal may ever touch this Iconic Axe until the end of time itself
Finally getting my ass in gear in purchasing Rory's music LEGEND R I P
Lovely summary by the nephew of the great man.
Thanks Daniel
On pinched harmonics - Nothing to do with a heavy right hand (or left hand if you are left handed)
All that is required is that you catch the string you have just plucked with the fleshy side of your thumb - This is quite a delicate manouevre but once mastered you can move along the string to various positions to collect more harmonics . I use a Herdim 0.71
red plectrum as this allows me the best strike for this effect as my thumb follows more quickly behind the soft plectrum with little or no resistance..
You can also collect more harmonics by trilling on an open string and gently sliding a finger (other hand) along from about the 3rd fret . Trilling is also easier with a soft plectrum 0.71 Nylon or similar . These harmonics are very quiet unless you are well cranked into overdrive distortion !!
In an old Guitar Player Interview I seen to recall he had it refretted 20-21 times.
Diese Gitarre ist für mich die wertvollste der ganzen Erde.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Die IST unbezahlbar!!!! RIP
Lovely interview.
good man. good man.
Good interview, interesting insights.
Rory give his soul on this guitar
So 27 Clapton, hendrix worshippers watched this & thumbed down. Probably another reminder of how Rory was muched loved & a much better guitarist!!
so...the spirit lives on :)
the thing about the Strat is-- Rory had the frets replaced at least a few times. He had things replaced and whatnot. It was not a pitiful axe at all! He knew how to take care of it- pick-ups and fret work etc etc etc- . It was his signature instrument and it is beautiful....just making a note on what Daniel said about Fender offering one to Rory ...etc
You're right, of course. Rory knew that this guitar was a great part of "his sound" and said that he didn't abuse it, and would wipe it down after playing and all. Rory also mentioned that he sweated quite a lot("It's my birth sign") and had to take extra care of his instruments because of it.
David Smith Understandable. I read where Rory’s brother Dónal stated that Rory’s sweat was unusually acidic because of his extremely rare blood type, which is why it ate away at the Strat’s finish the way it did.
That guitar has more character than any guitar I've ever seen
That´s right.
Willy Nelsons Trigger is up there as well.I love them both.
I Think So Too.
Check out Willie Nelsons guitar, a 69 Martin be named Trigger. Amazing..
Probably the most iconic Guitar know to man :) Peace
Thinking about Rory’s nature, this is less like a trip through his guitar collection and more of a rummage through his toolbox.
I understand... His love and respect is pure... As is mine
Amazing stuff thanks 😷🏴🇬🇧👍🏾
Tools of your trade Not in the same league but I have a spanner I used for thirty years day in day out as a mechanical engineer. Must have loosened and tightened many bolts with it. It's actually bent from all the use from my right hand and arm . Bought the day I started my training in 1973 still have and use it now 2020
Incredible
MY god, Rory PAID for his instruments. he didn't run into a store, steal it and then brag about it later. I like him even more now.
3 thumbs down that belong to people with too much internal anger and frustation. Feel sad for them.
