    In some dubs, like the original French version, Mr. Satan was renamed Hercules likely to avoid controversy with religious communities. However it's also a pun because "Hercules" is not only a legendary hero but also a term used to describe someone incredibly strong in certain language and as we know , Mr. Satan is actually much weaker compared to the Z Fighters

    • @GeteMachine
      @GeteMachine 23 дня назад

      I think its because some European dubs based theirs off of the American dub which ironically now does call him Mr. Satan officially. A lot of purists hate the "Hercule" name, but I can't think of what else they could have called him back then, when Christian groups were a lot more prominent in the 90s.

    Fun facts about the Italian dub names:
    - Android 8 is named Ottavio, which is both a real, if uncommon, Italian name and it also is a letter removed from ottavo, meaning eighth.
    -Not sure if it has any link, but Bora is a wind
    -They renamed the entire crane school for some reason. Tao bai bai became Tai pai, Tenshinhan Tensing, and Chiaotzu Rif
    - Piccolo also means small, the word for great also means big, and his title in italian is the Great Mage Piccolo, so it ended up funnier than usual
    -Vegito is called Vegekou, splitting the difference and using Goku rather than Kakarot

    Some of the speculations I've come across are kind of funny too in the western fandom. I've heard people think Trunks was named after a tree trunk, Pan named after Pan Troglodyte (Chimps) and Krillin named after the orange crustacean krill and "Piccolo" being a pickle, because he's green. I see the logic, even if its not really correct.
    As for Pan, I'd like to think her name is just based on frying pan, because you can fry-rice (common in Asian food) and Gohan is 'rice'.

    I think, at least in the anime, when they say Piccolo for the first time there is a quick joke about how silly his name is, before Roshi says while it is silly he is very dangerous

    Android 8's name is likely a reference to a 1963 manga and anime called EIGHTMAN / 8 MAN / 8TH MAN. A police detective is murdered by criminals and a scientist transfers the detective's mind into an android body. Sound familiar?
    The EIGHTMAN anime also ran in the US in the 60s before it was channels stopped running the show because Eightman recharged by smoking power cigarettes when new broadcast standards barred marketing of tobacco o. TV and not wanting to encourage kids to smoke. EIGHTMAN seems to be the direct inspiration for ROBOCOP

    Chi chi also means boobs in Latin America. Which is probably why they changed it to Leche (milk) in the Latin America dub.

    Important to note that for Freeza, the original spelling has a long "a" sound in the end as opposed to a short one used for literal freezers. So while the pun is there it is indeed not supposed to be written or pronounced the same.
