Great interview. The anecdote about the A’s jersey she could afford and the bit of joy she could give her son while they were living in her car… that really got me.
Same
That's why I love Foul Territory so much they do thing unorthodox. None of the big network would dare to put Sheng Thao on air. That's why Scott Braun a rising star in the media landscape. I hope other company can appreciate his talent and let him freelance from time to time. Scott putting work in expanding the Foul Territory brand but she should get a chance to be on network TV like Fox, CBS sports, NBC Sport, or ABC Sports. Scooter we're proud keep changing the media landscape!!!
Tip of the cap to Oakland fans, amazing job
Really proud of foul territory. Show is getting better and better. its my go to baseball show now 🤗
Thank you soooooo much for having Mayor Sheng on. It's a travesty what Fisher and Kaval are working to pull off. And you are so right that this isn't an Oakland problem, its a baseball problem. The A's ownership group needs to be run out of the sport for the betterment of baseball. Go Ballers!
The Oakland mayor has way more problems than baseball to worry about.
@@leonardharper7885Baseball is a huge part of Oakland and the economics behind losing this team will hurt the city. So yes, fight to keep your team and force Fisher to sell

Let's be honest. No one is going to invest over $1B in a building in Oakland today. Just ask Joe Lacob. He built in San Francisco when he wanted a new arena.
PROUD TO BE A OAKTOWN FAN!
Great interview! Foul territory keep up the great reporting! Sheng Tao, keep it up! I’m an Oakland voter and am proud of my mayor!
If you are proud of a mayor doing a poor job in the crime infested city known as Oakland then maybe you should get a clue.
Name one thing she has done to improve crime in Oakland, She dose not even have a police chief.
You guys did a great job reporting the true side of events. The people of Oakland and baseball deserve better. John Fisher is a cancer to our sport
They didn't do an accurate reporting with regards to the causes of the A's leaving Oakland.
The overall picture of the situation was nailed on.
The politics of Oakland as a city hasn’t been great over the years when it comes to the A’s but we all know the what the main problem is. It’s been shown time and time again with how the A’s have been run (into the ground)
The new mayor has done all she can when she got into power when it comes to the A’s. The lies and deceit from Fisher and his cronies has been other worldly and now MLB is facilitating them to run a mock. It’s bad for baseball and terrible for such a great passionate fanbase in a big market.

DAMN! Mayor Sheng Thao is AMAZING! Just donated to Schools Over Stadiums. Scott, excellent interview! I love how you and all the FT team keep this disgusting Fisher mess front-and-center. Hopefully enough MLB insiders will acknowledge the error of their ways and act against Fisher - and for Oakland and MLB at-large.

Schools over stadiums is a scam.
Schools over stadiums is a scam.
If you really sent money to Schools over Stadiums, you're a fool. They are a PAC, not a Teacher's union. Even if they could get a ballot initiative it wouldn't be until November and wouldn't effect anything. They haven't signed one single signature. They filed their finances with Nevada which they have to do by law. They brought in $66K, mostly from Californians, and spent $87K. People in the media lie to you all the time.

@@hoapres They want an expansion team
Mayor Thao, WTG!
If Oakland keeps the A’s brand then isn’t the expansion technically going to Vega? Cuz it’ll be a new team… right or am I too high ?
No the Oakland A’s would be renamed to Las Vegas X and retain all the accolades like world series rings and the current players
I'm assuming it would be like the Browns moving to Baltimore. Where the name, colours, history stayed in Cleveland and the players, personnel, etc. Moved to Baltimore under a new name, colours, history.
No, the A’s then would be an expansion, while Fisher’s club is historically the A’s.
Look at the New York Yankees. Their franchise roots were the Baltimore Orioles. Then the Baltimore Orioles of today started as the Milwaukee Brewers, then the St Louis Browns before moving to Baltimore and becoming the Orioles again.
Interesting stuff looking at history. Just we haven’t had much movement in sports modern history of late. Terrible the Oakland A’s are used as an example for wealthy owners greed.
Why is the bobble head out in front says SELL on it during a conversation about keeping the team how did that happen lol 😝

@FoulTerritory, haven't heard any other owners interviewed why they voted unanimously for the move to Vegas given the lack of plan & backlash. Besides the owners sticking together which is a given, do you think it's like you said they can hold cities hostage for stadium upgrades? And/or do you think there's a solution coming with tv/cable deals or betting kick backs where they'll make a ton more $ from in the future? Because that's the only thing I think the owners would agree on to approve the move. I'm worried this can happen in almost any city now.

@Braun-FoulTerritory The owner is a clown but Oakland city government is just as much if not an even bigger clown than Fisher.
It's really a BIG myth that Oakland and Fisher were close to a deal. To be fair, Thao wasn't in at the beginning of the long journey or quest for a new ballpark. EVERYONE was on notice that the A's were actively looking at Vegas for a minimum of TWO years. Fisher had to complete something resembling a ball park deal by Jan. 2024 to remain on revenue sharing and while it could be argued that Fisher didn't meet the criteria timely in Vegas, it was certainly clear to everybody that it wasn't going to get timely done in Oakland. EVEN If Thao could have somehow reach an agreement with Fisher in 2023 then it wasn't clear that Oakland City council would have approved it.
As a vegas resident i want a team but not take the As from oakland
Why is there no means of suing a neglectful ownership out of their position?
Is this a serious question?
@@seanmiles6991 Indeed. Why, in ever-litigious USA, can't poor ownership be held publicly or legally accountable? There is a long track record here
@@seansley simple, the no bullshit answer to your question is because this is America.
Unfortunately in America a man or woman has the absolute right to run their property as they see fit.
The Oakland A’s are John Fisher’s property, he spent his own millions to purchase it, making him the boss, allows him to run it poorly (in your eyes) or just him making those tough choices that are best for the franchise, that’s in my eyes.
Simply because someone chooses to move his property somewhere, you don’t deem appropriate or it going someplace you wouldn’t move to, doesn’t require a lawsuit please.
This isn’t a Monarchy country, that allows one individual (you)
to pull a man’s franchise simply cause you don’t like the direction, it’s going.
When I asked you earlier, if your question was serious, I guess you missed the sarcasm tone in the question.

New owner or MOVE the team. Oakland is DONE with Fisher.
Solid interview. Sheng Thao is cool and relatable. Which is good for the people but billionaires who have more money than life itself, are not big fans. Fisher is a snake, we know this, and really, Fisher and Manfred want to push a narrative that the city is in shambles and does not deserve a team. Manfred mentioning the giants in the same breath as the A's is telling. The Gap is an SF based company. In a perfect world, the Fishers would celebrate the idea that John removed the competition for market shares in the area for MLB. I honestly believe this. Fisher is still devoted to the Giants organization and will move the athletics just to please the Giants and his family. If someone can prove this, that would bust up this whole moving the vegas deal.
You must work for Shang Tao and your comments are very hilarious.I lived in Oakland for 50 years and I have never seen what has becone as a embarrassment to a city I once loved. When are you people going to wake the F up? @@silverado2004 Well - For one - I do not work for the city of Oakland and if I did - I wouldn't make time to comment on these things. Thao's Predecessor did not do her any favors. Schaaf had plenty of time to iron out these details for the athletics, she is solely responsible for the departure of the Raiders, and she is an Oakland Native. Thao has been in office for literally 1 year and 2 months, as of this comment. So in my opinion, she is doing the best she can with what she was given. If she is in office for 5 years and still no progress, then really that's when people should be concerned. I get that immediate action is expected but it's all a process that takes forever to get through. Add in the fact, Fisher really thinks going to a smaller market, that does not want him is going to benefit him is misguided. In my opinion, Fisher is moving the team for reasons that are not monetary. The world's three biggest companies are based in the bay area, and you want to say its best for business to move to Nevada? Naw man - that dog don't hunt.

When the A's selected Howard Terminal, either they were unaware of the problems of having a steel mill with its history of noxious fires or they thought the city would help deal with it. Well, the A's lost a legal battle to deal with the problem in January 2023 and the city did nothing to help. In fact when the genius mayor went to pitch Howard Terminal to MLB in July, she included the steel mill but planned to erect foliage to protect the view from the stadium. Then another fire occurred at Schnitzer Steel in August 2023. Huge black clouds and people in both East Bay counties were advised to stay in. Even the Oakland city web site said the fumes could reach as far south as San Jose. That's what the incompetent city pitched to MLB and the media never questioned the mayor about it.
John and Dave they give you another free service for going way up their asses?
Give up the whole "We want an expansion" team crap Sheng. Your city has run off 3 teams in the last 10 years. NO ONE is giving you an expansion team of any sport. Get the land back the county sold to Fisher and leave it at that.

No question that Fisher will sell in a year or 2 after the relocation. The A’s franchise valuation goes up by at least one billion $’s when they relocate to Vegas. Fischer only cares about the almighty dollar-just like Al and Mark Davis. Billionaire owners couldn’t care less about the fan base that is the foundation of where their wealth was built. The mayor speaks the truth-support schools over stadiums.
@@TimFrith24 that doesn’t make sense to me, actually it’s ridiculous, for one Fisher can’t sell to anyone affiliated with a casino, I thought everyone knew that.
Second thing is Fisher will get penalized/taxed if he sells the franchise within 7 years of relocation, that makes zero sense to think Fisher will get taxed all that money, when all he has to do is hold till like 2037 and not get penalized.
Sheng Thao has no shame making a public appearance after the disaster Oakland has become under her watch. The crime is at an all time high, business are fleeing the city at record numbers and there’s currently a pan by Oakland citizens to recall her butt for incompetence and lack of compassion for the citizens.
Dude, she has been mayor one year, and has worked to increase the number of police. But what a mayor can do in one year is pretty limited. But conservatives love to hate on the Bay Area. Red state murder rate has increased 39.4% since 2000, and 13.4% in blue states. Alabama has twice the murder rate as California.
Oakland has had a crime problem for its entire existence, get out of here wirh your idiocy
All you have to do is make an appearance, say words and you then pretend to care. 😆
Part of the problem is the DA also. Only so much you can do
All time high? Lol. You're either a propagandist or a moron.
On one hand though, I understand if an owner does not want to build or continue their brand in a city with one of the highest crime rates. Loyal fanbase or not. I mean, look at SF. They don't lack the money, and I wouldn't put it past players to want to take their family there going off what i see in the news. There're other teams, and better states to play for.
Vegas is pretty high in crime rates, too. It's about free money with as little risk for the owners as possible.

In the last century Sports teams, got big tax brakes and other breaks and multi billion dollar handouts. People are not falling for it anymore. Let’s see what happens in the next 20 years!!
30 years to figure out the stadium, to me the As and Oakland both are failures.. lost the warriors, the raiders and now the As so Oakland has blood on there hands too..
At least the Warriors was a success of Oakland, but Raiders, however is the dumb and John Fisher is the dumber
John Fisher might do John Fisher things, but its pretty clear the government in Oakland is going to keep doing what it does -- and that's not good for Oakland. John Fisher is leaving Oakland. Be happy. Unfortunately the government of Oakland still remains.
John Fisher wants the A’s to make money. He decided that would never happen in Oakland. The mayor, several city council members, and several local sports reporters all claimed his look to Vegas was a squeeze play to get more out of the City of Oakland, and a bluff. The ask t the city was always minimal, so that has never made any sense. But still they were antogonistic to him, city officials constantly wanting to renegotiate issues, threatening to put it on the ballot, etc… How was it a surprise when as soon as Vegas came up with a plan the A’s took it? Everyone pretty much dared them to.
Then the mayor gets into a pissing match with Fisher and Manfred and thinks she can demand an to keep the A’s name and get an expansion team? She doesn’t know how to politic. She knows how to play to her base in a safe far left city, but not to work with others. She destroyed whatever chance Oakland may have had to get an expansion team by her recent comments. Again, plays well to her base but doesn’t help actual A’s fans.
Fisher could have kept the team here if he really wanted to and just funded the offsite infrastructure himself. That is unheard of these days but he could have chosen to do it if he was that committed to keeping the team in Oakland. But I think the atmosphere, poor attendence going back years, low TV ratings, and antagonistic relationship the A’s have always recieved from the city, in the past where they city/county did everything to make the coliseum better for the Raiders at the expense of the A’s, more recently where the city council hemmed and hawed on support for their end (offiste infrastricture only, this is the minimum most localities provide, most also provide funding for the stadium itself) and the mayor acted as if even negotiating with the A’s was distasteful, I am not surprised the A’s are leaving.
Those celebrating this are fools. They are celebrating the further decline of Oakland. We are literally getting a “B” team. Clap, clap, clap.
Lol if MLB supports Fisher ripping the team out of Oakland they were never going to consider expansion.
John Fisher can't afford to build in the Bay, plain and simple.
Warriors, Niners and Giants all managed to build stadiums, Fisher just can't get it done.
@@cg5968 yes, I think the expansion would be highly unlikely reguardless, but not impossible. It has happened in the past. I think if the A’s stayed in the coliseum 25-27 and had decent attendence and better TV ratings that would help. But they didn’t even surpass 2mil in attendence with back to back 97 win seasons in ‘18, ‘19, maybe not even 1.5 million. That is just pitiful. Also the TV ratings don’t support the contract, even though everyone crows about it, its still bottom five in MLB, or was before the bankruptcy the Angels and Padres provider is dealing with. The mayor and Brodie, and Casey and everyone can crow about the size of the market but its clear the fanbase within that market is miniscule.
I think it would have been better if Fisher just went with a ballpark instead of all the rest at HT, but get why they all in. But the fact remains their ask to the city was minimal and should not have been that complicated. But, as the project has dragged out the finances in the city of Oakland changed, and that made things different.
Not going to compare sports, but MLB wise, every new ballpark is being built with local subsidies. Oracle had minimal, but did have some for offsite infrastructure. However, it was noted just a few years later they never could have done it except during that unique period when interest rates were low along with property costs, and construction. Right now is the exact opposite. KC’s new stadium (ironically for the expansion team that replaced the A’s after they left) is getting public money for the stadiun itself. White Sox’s new park plan will require significant public money and that is a top market team. Petco in San Diego is always ranked a top five ballpark; the owner only paid 1/3 of the stadium cost. But it has revitalized the neighborhood.
The fact is the A’s ask to Oakland was minimal, and the city hemmed and hawed and their public comments were at times questionable about their support. The A’s made it clear they were looking at Vegas, then made it clear whoever came through first they wrre going with. I’ve spent the last several months going back and reading comments trying to figure out what the hell happened. It is embarrassing now to see all the comments from politicians, “news” sites, and the rest that probably forsaw this happening.
Interesting take Moonlight Graham Cracker. Do you live in Oakland? What happened with John Fisher’s deal in Fremont? Have you been to an Oakland City Council meeting?
Fans don’t want to go to games when the team is owned by Fisher. It’s like the ground is
covered in Fisher dog poop and then people say oh your attendance is no good. Clean up your shit team owners so people can enjoy the game.
@@elisemariecollinsyoga5905 yes, since the late 80s. Havent attended city council meeting. Not sure of the relevence?
A’s attendence has been poor since Haas. Long before Fisher. Even when the A’s pulled back-to-back 97 win seasons in 2018 and 2019 just a couple years after he took over ownership/director, A’s attendence was some of the lowest in MLB. We have a great fan base, but the core fan base is small. The rest of the fans are fickle.
Attendence is the number one source of income for MLB teams by a large margin except the A’s, Pirates, Marlins, and Rays pretty consistently. The A’s have consistently been in the bottom since they came to Oakland, the exception being a couple of years, decades ago, where they were close to middle, but that lasted one or two years then the sank back to the bottom. Their payroll has also been consistently near the bottom long before Fisher, even under Finley. They have all tried to time their “big” spending years with development of prospects amd hope fans show up to sustain it but it has never happened for long. Best run they had was 88-90 (when I came here) they went to three WS, this was also the years of their highest attendence but even then it didnt hit what many teams do in bad years.
Oakland/Alameda jumped when Al Davis said jump, ruined the coliseum for baseball. It wasn’t great before, close to Dodger stadium but because it was made for football it couldnt be that good, but before they built that monstrosity in centerfield it was a real ballpark. Oakland and Alameda Co continually did whatever Al Davis wanted at the detriment to the A’s and no one cared. I remember seeing a game where the outfiled was trashed after a Raiders game in the fall because they couldnt work out schedules right. Players have always hated playing here, especially the past several decades.
The A’s and MLB went through several owners trying to find a stadium. Thao came into the mayorship at the end of this latest attempt and seemed to think the A’s would hit the reset for her, like the years of waiting and aggravation in the past were forgotten. That is beyond naive. They made it clear they were not doing that. She acted like she was working on the deal while pinching her nose shut with one hand. Her behavior since the A’s said they were going with Vegas has not been helpful if she actually wanted to get an expansion team or keep the A’s name here.
I’d much rather the A’s play here ‘25-27. Once they are out of the coliseum playing elsewhere, that is when it is over. If they are still here and something goes bad there would be a chance to have another go at HT, maybe even a scaled down plan or at the colisiem, who knows. But once they are out of the coliseum that is it. That is why the Giants offered to let them play at Oracle next year. Once the A’s have left Oakland the Giants know its done, and they will soon own the whole bay area. But that also goes if they are in Sac or SLC or wherever. If they are elsewhere in 25-27 and the Vegas site goes bad, well they are now out of Oakland and committed to Vegas fully so they will just make a new deal in Vegas even if it takes another year or two. Keeping the A’s in the coliseum a few more years is not about appeasing Fisher. People talk about how he needs it; he doesnt. MLB will let him keep the TV money in Sac if they aren’t at Oracle, but that TV money loss won’t break the team. Many teams are dealing with the same thing for other reasons now, MLB is getting them through. They will do the same for the A’s. And attendence $ is meaninless at this point, it has always been low, even before the Vegas announcement, even when they were winning it sucked. They have learned to live without it.
The other owners support them. MLB is a business. They have watched the debacle of trying to get a stadium deal for decades. The players union supports the move. They put in their last CBA the deadline to have a deal done to put the A’s back on path for full revenue sharing because the players really would rather be in Vegas. If the MLPAA wanted the A’s to stay in Oakland they couldmhave worded it as such in the CBA but they didn’t.
Wolff was the owner/director when they were trying for Fremont, not sure what you were trying to say with Fisher’s Fremont stadium plan?
