      I had a partial meniscectomy completed on my left knee in high school and ACL reconstruction surgery (football injury). Would there be any potential procedure I should/could get at some point? I'm almost 30 and I don't really have any issues with my knee at the moment, other than slightly less range of motion due to scar tissue, and maintain a healthy and active lifestyle. I just wanna prioritize my long-term health and well-being.

      Meniscus procedures like this are probably the least concerning knee issue to be honest. I have my right knee done 4 times and left knee once. Luckily for me all of my issues strictly meniscus. I get concerned when there are ligaments and/or tendons involved. They can clean up aka trim and smooth fraying or minor tears and flaps on the meniscus with high success rates and short recovery times. Ligaments and tendons that are injured and surgically repaired never are the same even when fully healed. I would rather break a bone then have ligaments surgically repaired. I honestly think that repetitive cleanups like I have had may have very different root causes that if caught early enough can be easily addressed especially for professional athletes. I think one of the root causes for me has to do with flexibility in areas like my hips, hip flexors, calves, etc which impact body mechanics which over time results in higher stress on joints and muscles. Flexibility also can make you more susceptible to injuries if you fall or land awkwardly from contact during a game.

      The pressure to come back quicker will effect this type of injury. Further degradation occurs if you do not properly strengthen the surrounding leg muscles during rehab. The severity of the injury ie larger/smaller pieces of cartidlige, determine how invasive of a procedure the knee arthroscopy is.

    I had a cartilage cleanup surgery under my kneecap for a pothole of damaged cartilage. My knee would swell and I would get tightness and pain with long periods of standing or high impact cardio after the surgery. It wasn’t until I transitioned to low impact cardio, cycling, that the swelling and pain decreased. However, the pain and swelling was definitely an improvement post surgery vs. pre surgery.

    When I was younger I asked my sports medicines doctor if I could get surgery for my knee that's been hurting me since my early 20s due to multiple injuries. And I was told "if you aren't making millions as a pro, don't get cleanup surgery because you're trading off your long term knee heath for short term performance. So unless it's for a living, the best thing is just to grin and bear it and keep playing amateur level basketball on your sore knee. You'll have much less pain in the long term. Surgery will only give you maybe 5 good years before you're worse off than before having it."

      @@AllDay3004 Mine is tendon damage rather than cartilage so it's hard to say generically - but the pain _mostly_ went away on its own after like 20+ yrs. I asked when I was 30, and I'm 46 now and still play adult league basketball at a pretty high level. Pain in my knee kept getting less and less since my mid 30s until it finally went away entirely.
      Sure, I jump like Jokic now, but otherwise I have no problems getting up and down the court, positioning for rebounds, setting quick screens, making good passes, hook shots, fadeaways, etc. Doc told me to just stay active and keep icing the knee down nightly. Inflammation is worse than the injury usually. And that's what I did.

I decided to get a second opinion and the second specialist told me that a risk to me from an arthroscopy wasn't worth it. I ended up resting the knee for 8 months instead and then came back to sports injury and pain free for the next 4 years. Elite athletes though don't have the luxury of taking 8 months off.

      Actually... they do, specially the Giannis FRANCHISE PLAYER Antetokoumpo's of the world. Most franchises and teams all around the world, would wait whats needed for a franchise caliber player to be 100% and ready. Thing is, tell that to the players! Its the players, not the teams (Most of the times) who want to be ready to rock asap.
      Why most players, specially franchise caliber players want to comeback so fast? Cuase of the "mamba mentality", that mental problem that elite players have, that adiction to compete.
      Just look at KD example, nigga was off for over a season, and the nets waited for him, why? Its KD ffs, i would wait for him too. Look at the Bulls waiting for Zo, not even in the conversation with Giannis and KD, and still the Bulls are waiting for him, hell, look at what the bulls went throught just waiting and hoping for a healthy DRose (never happened saddlY)

    The reality that no one teaches us athletes is that the nature of what we do eventually leads to a breakdown of our bodies. There is a point of diminishing returns with being ultra active that people don’t talk about, your joints just breakdown. Aside from my trauma surgery that was medically necessary - every "cleanup" procedure afterward left me worse off, with more pain, more problems, worse cartilage problems, and most of all really painful deep scar tissue. Only thing that's helped it has been the saving grace of regenerative medicine - like prolotherapy, PRP and some of the various nerve procedures, as well as some of the off-shoots that are offered to reduce scar tissue, inflammation, help heal soft tissue damage, and so on. I went from not being able to walk for a long time to having several of my joints function again. I think one day we won't cut for everything, because at best people are healthy and can handle it, but for some of us, it's a devastating thing that can take decades to undo the damage of what we once thought was a good idea and no big deal. I'm especially grateful that I had a surgeon who recognized I was too young and not a good candidate for joint replacement because that's what they were pushing for, and now I know that is something that I wouldn't have had a prayer of a good outcome with.

    So, I'll probably get lambasted for posting this. 'But' 40 years ago at 25 years old, my knees were shot. HS Sports, Military, Construction. My diagnoses was cartilage loss, Bone on bone with my right knee and degeneration of cartilage on my left knee. My sports doctor was talking a knee replacement. Taking more than three steps up a set of stairs was excruciating. As well my elbow and wrists were in chronic pain also. Long story short, I was willing to try anything.
    I Read a book about a vet using ground chicken cartilage for farm animals, and it worked so well, the farmers started taking it. 'Well' for some reason, "ground chicken" cartilage is impossible to find. Seems it might even be a controlled substance. The book said this, and said that ground beef cartilage, 'Unflavored gelatin' was the next best thing. The book said take one or two tablespoons daily mixed with 16 oz's water an a little juice added for the acid and taste. It said you had to take it every day and you would start to feel a difference in three months, and in six months you could even be pain free.
    Well, 40 years later, I have been literally pain free ever since. I don't work for a Gelatin company like Knox. I fact, they started charging more and more for their product, so I buy it in bulk online. You have to take it everyday for the rest of your life though. Fair trade for great knees and joints. I mean what do you have to lose? But your pain..
    It's my sacred cow.
    Best wishes, safe travels.

    I've had ACL replacement in both knees. One at 40 and the other near 60. They're not for sissies.
    The second when I was older the doctor said, "we don't do ACL
    surgery on someone your age". I was like, well ok but I'm still very active. Still ski at a high level and race dirt bikes. He was like, "let's do PT and let the medial collateral heal, then we'll see where you are". After seven weeks of PT and a letter from my physical therapist(have no idea what he wrote), the doc comes in and says..."So, when do you want to do this ACL"?

    Rumour is in Greece there's no knee injury in general and it's all pr bs because Giannis doesn't want to join the national team. It's also been used as an excuse before and when the basketball federation asked for his tests the bucks refused to send them. It was a big controversy back then. Also giannis this summer is pushing some of his commercial deals and is doing tours to promote them.

      I don’t remember which video it was, but there’s one where he actually does talk about those microfracture surgeries, and he goes pretty in depth - to give you the overall gist of what he said, those surgeries ultimately proved to be largely ineffective and often caused more problems than they solved (so in other words, ‘that surgery was a failure’, just as you guessed).

    • @heox123
      @heox123 10 месяцев назад

      Probably a combination of prophilaxys, better body mechanics and a meniscal repair if after all that the meniscus still manages to tear. For example derrick rose wouldnt have had to stop his peak performance so abruptly if he had cared about his landing mechanics

    • @sportsgenius91
      @sportsgenius91 10 месяцев назад

      @heox123 you can have great mechanics but when you're cutting and exploding trying to guard your man it won't help. You're going to mess up your cartilage. I agree with the meniscus they can probably repair it more than trim it down. Unless it's a bucket tear of the meniscus, they have to shave it down.

    • @evhnic
      @evhnic 10 месяцев назад +3

      They don’t typically require long term healing like a fully ruptured knee ligament. However it still leaves a lasting effect on the “lifespan” of the knee whenever cartilage meant to protect structures from loads is removed. The knee will eventually be in poor condition which can be best exemplified by players like Kawhi Leonard or Lonzo Ball who have had extensive histories of knee surgery or in some cases “clean-ups”
