    When you touched on the aggressive nature of Zion's playstyle it made me think of LeBron. Could you one day cover the anomaly of LeBron, how he was able to maintain his aggressive/physical playstyle well into his mid 30s despite playing 35 - 45 minutes a night for decades?

      Perhaps. But really we'd have to dig a little deeper - does "knee soreness" count? (I'm not saying it does.) Does every little sprain and strain count? (I'm not saying they do.) I would call this astounding if only certain injuries counted or accounted for some higher percentage of these unique injuries. However, and again I'm not making the claim that what I am about to say is true, if examples such as knee soreness counted as a knee injury and finger sprains counted as unique injuries, and these types of injuries accounted for 40%+ of these injuries, it is less and less astounding.

    The fact that Wembanyama's injuries have been so minor with his quick, guardlike playstyle is already an anomaly.
    He moves so quickly, that in order to have played like that as consistently as he has and STILL be healthy in time for the draft tells me that mechanically he is just better at avoiding injury than other bigs his size. He will do well in the NBA for a short while. I'm hoping for at least 5 great seasons. He just needs to keep his joint exercises up, keep his feet strong, and avoiding attacking a defender when it isn't necessary.

    I really learned a lot from this video, Dr. Brian. It was interesting to hear the comparisons to KD and AD, as well as the measures Wemby is taking to reduce his risk. It’s a little concerning, considering the injury histories of those two. Do you have any concern about the injury Chet suffered last summer, since they seem to have similar body types? Or could that fall more into the genetic differences you references? I also worry about his feet, considering the issues Yao and other big men have had.

Such a high potential ceiling for Wembanyama. Most big men eventually get injured though. I wonder how much healthy bulk he's capable of putting on as he grows, eats, and trains. He's so skinny. He seems incredibly mature and willing to put in the work. I watched an in-death video on his training approach and there was one thing I didn’t like; he doesn’t lift weights. Strength is never a weakness and has been proven to be protective against injury across all contexts (I’m a biomechanist). I wouldn’t want Wemby to gain a lot of weight suddenly but I would very much encourage his training team to add resistance training - particularly the lower body.
    Added strength increases the ability of an individual to recapture their center of mass while losing balance - this prevents falls and is one of the major areas of focus when trying to prevent falls in the elderly. Love your videos!

    • @wille6788
      @wille6788 10 месяцев назад

      Lifting weights is not just adding strength, it comes with many effects which could be negative to ones playing style/athletic ability depending on the individual. One of Wembanyamas biggest strengths is being light and agile

    • @juqual78
      @juqual78 5 месяцев назад

      @@wille6788 I was a very tall and skinny kid back about 20 years back. Once I hit 15 I started resistance training and did it religiously for 3 years straight and was able to transform my body type from a Wemby shape, to being a bit more muscular than Michael Jordan and my agility and speed went through the roof. Went from being barely being able to dunk, to dunking from the free throw line or just over people completely. My shooting and passing only improved and I never lost flexibility at the peak of my resistance training. Fighting inside became much easier and my rebuilds and blocks went up big time as well.
      When I stopped lifting I lost my Lebron/MJ like super-human abilities within a year and then got hurt. I don't really follow Lebron much but I bet you that man puts some solid resistance training and it's the reason he is still around dominating at age 38. You can see it in his incredible physique and how just he man-handles other NBA players who are also in amazing physical shape and are also giants! It's kind of mind blowing how fast and agile James is at his age but I'm not really that surprised because I got a very personal glimpse into seeing what kind of a monster you could turn into by keeping up a solid lifting program.
      I STRONGLY suspect that if Wemby started to work on increasing his strength through a smart resistance training program, within 3 years he would be completely unstoppable. Imagine if this man was 2x as strong but only 15-20 pounds heavier. Scary to think about because it's wouldn't be fair to anyone in the league.
      I myself can't recommend a smart and tailored resistance training enough and now that I am an adult in my mid-forties it keeps my knees and back from hurting at all. Cheers!

I read an interview that they are focusing on making him stronger without necessarily bulking up which I think is the right thing to do. You really do not need to put too much weight on that height. You just need to get stronger. They are in the right direction. The Spurs will know what to do with him too. They are notorious for resting players. They started it. you need to bulk up to get stronger. How else you gonna create muscle? Getting stronger doesn't just come from exercise. He'll need a ton of protein intake which comes from eating, which he doesn't look to do very often by how skinny he is at the moment. He weighs 20 pounds more than me and he's 1 foot and 6 inches taller. Even at that light weight, he's gonna need a ton of protein intake to keep his scale in the positive while working out. He'll need to have .7 to 1.0 grams per pound of his own weight.
      You do the math. He's gonna have to bulk up more than "just a little" to reach that amount.

    I am not a medical professional, but one thing I would like to mention regarding his health is that he has been training at a professional level with professional teams and their trainers, coaches, nutritionists, medical staff, etc for years. He isn’t coming in from a background of brutal AAU schedules prematurely wrecking his body and eating a diet of American school cafeteria food and McDonald’s. His process surrounding his rise has been very polished since the beginning plus his lean frame puts less stress on his joints, ligaments, and tendons in his lower body than a heavier guy like say Embiid has to deal with. So while of course the injury concern is always there for a guy who is seven feet and up, I don’t think he is an automatic injury waiting to happen.

    Truly an enlightening perspective on Wemby's physique and explains a lot why he was able to play his last pro season in France without missing a game due to injury. His present frame is optimized for greater mobility and maximum absorption of physical stress at his level of play. The way he plays is not overly taxing physically. He is no way reckless but rather graceful and rhythmic. Add to that the right regimen of exercises to further strenghten his joints and limbs that he is doing regularly. He knows his body well and when he says he needs no bulking up, he maybe right.
    He survived the French league being skinny and without serious injuries, why would he bulk up in the NBA if it will cost him the abilities that makes him unique?
    All he needs to do is just take good care of his body like what he does and still live up to his immense potential.
    Wemby is no doubt a great talent, a rare one, but there are other great athletes in the NBA. He may not be able to dominate all the time, but certainly sooner he will have a more refined set of skills superior enough to outplay them while in a frame not necesarily overly muscular.
    At this time he may well be the brightest star in the league - the most exciting and most unique in his generation.

I think about a player like ad who was like 6'2 until his Jr or sr season and maybe this was too late and his body never slowly learn to play with that size. Wemby has always been tall, I think his body is more conditioned to it and he knows how to mitigate the risks. Like you said though that a bigger man will have more mechanical strain be put on their body which does mean that he by default has a higher risk of injury than a smaller man. Factoring in playstyle is secondary, though still important certainly, but it is a mitigating factor of that risk, not a primary factor. What strain and in what manner it is loaded on the frame will be a part of the equation but it doesn't change the underlying structural strenght of the frame it is being put on.

    Dr Sutterer, one thing about Wemby you didn't address or noticed is his jump: he is not a leaper at all. As opposed to Zion Williamson, for instance, who always put an enormous amount of stress to his lower joints because of the explosive strength in his leg muscles. People don't notice because he is so tall and long, even he doesn't jump super high.... well he is still going to be very high, you know.
    My point is: that's another positive, i think, for his longevity. That and the fact he will probably remain fairly light in the future, i think one can be fairly optimistic about his knees and ankles, basically: he is just not functionally putting a huge amount of stress on them.
    Victor's parents were athletes and his father is a physio coach, today. He was in long jump and triple jump. You can tell he spent time teaching Victor all he knows about the human body. Looking at the way he stretches and warms up, you can tell: it's very refined. This is where all his careful behaviour comes from.

    is he comparable at all to ralph sampson? they seem similarly built and sampson dealt with nasty foot injuries that ended his career

      He's out for a couple of games. They say it's his ankle but it looks more like his foot -- he didn't land on anyone. Just went down awkwardly. I wonder if he has flat feet.

      @@markyacoubian1911 😂😂 he’s gonna be just fine. He’s not going to risk playing on a slight strain while they’re in last place. So yes he’s out for a couple games more so because of their record/standing compared to the severity of the injury. It’s precautionary. So no he’s still not technically injured, just sore. Any other questions?

    His body type reminds me of two players 1) Marcus Camby but of course longer. He had injuries through his 17 year nba career or 2) Ralph Sampson, whose promising career was ruined by Injuries. For the sake of the game and the young man’, I hope he is more like Marcus.

    Have been saying this since about day one of seeing his frame. My point has always been height to strength ratio. Look at players in Wembys physical category (tall/skinny) and their injury history. It's inevitable if he can't put some muscle on. I hope to god he can bulk up. His playstyle is also realllllly injury prone, idk what you have been looking at. I've never seen Wemby land square, the man is always flailing his limbs around.

    Let's hope he doesn't have a career like Yao's. Great for a minute but not for an hour. Hopefully he strengthens his core/lower body to avoid those type of possible injuries, so father time doesn't come around the corner quicker than normal.

    Best of luck to Wemby. I want to see him work with Pop and the team to reach the potential he sees in himself.

    I believe he will be injury prone. I believe that he's not dumb and trying to get injured and we have all seen clips of him trying to lower his risk of injury. I also believe that injuries will likely happen just because injuries happen. It's rare for players to go five straight seasons without a single injury if they're getting extended playing time and play a crucial part on the team. People are concerned about him getting injured basically every season and I just don't see that not happening over the rigors of an entire NBA season and his height. I believe that he's doing steps to lower the risk but when the risk is so high, it's only a matter of time.

    As a Spurs fan am I concerned about injuries, sure. Does that level of concern come anywhere close to matching the level of excitement I feel about the potential from landing him in the draft? Heck no. Also the Spurs have good people who will take care of him (setting aside the whole dumb Kawhi situation from the past).

    Rose is a great example of a car who’s tires couldn’t handle the motor output.
    Really great point about injuries being a product of body type AND play style.

    The injuries possibility is what has me worried: men that big tend to see their feet and legs break down much earlier… it what kills Ming and Waltons careers, and It cost Oden any chance of being a pro player…
