He was a great friend and I was sad to see his knee issues. Those knee issues first showed up in middle school (Hamilton) at a track meet. He said he heard and felt a pop in his knee and fell down.
It tears me up that we didn’t get to see healthy B-roy and oden dominate with LMA. I’ll go to my grave believing that that team had championship potential if everyone had just been healthy for a season or two
@William Hassell they also would have added Dame cuz he came from trading Gerald Wallace. Those 4 together would have been amazing to watch. Shit Lebron would have probably joined them for easy titles.
Tore my ACL almost 5 years ago, but after the surgery and all the therapy I am in better shape than I was before. Your point about the knees going inwards is so crucial in therapy and training so yeah, it's ridiculous that he was getting that. My therapists and trainers basically retrained me so that I would run and jump normally instead of my original ways of having the knees concave in. Crazy how a trainer can make such a difference.
Not super applicable to this specific video, but I'm currently 2 weeks into quadricep contusion recovery and I'm really struggling with it. Your videos involving this and similar injuries have really helped me truly understand what is happening in the muscle and has helped calm my nerves about the recovery. Big thanks to you! Your videos are a huge help, and your explanations are perfect! 💯
Brian, you should do a Q&A/Fan questions on how we can properly rehab injuries and take care of our bodies while training.. This would allow you to upload more which would make everyone happy!
I did what Roy did, played a lot of basketball and had (from what the knee surgeon told me) around 70% of the cartilage in the knee joint taken out of both knees by the age of 17, first one (left knee) when I was 15 and second (right knee) at 17. When I had the second surgery the knee specialist said if I keep doing the amount of exercise that I was doing I will need knee replacements in both knees at around 35-40 years of age, so I quit playing sports. I'm now 38 and haven't had knee replacements, I recently had some scans of the knees because they were starting to get sore in the inner ball of the joint, from the scans the doctor didn't think I had much arthritis which is good, but there is a little bit, well there has to be, its been 21+ years of my knee joints basically being bone against bone. I figured my knee joints were getting sore because of the lack of muscle I was starting to have on my legs to support the knee joint, all the years of trying to preserve my knee joints started to catch up with muscle waste, which lead to quadricep tendonitis in both knees, and this is quadricep tendonitis that has been on going/developing for years, over 17 years in my left knee, right knee the last 5 years, so I wold say my tendonitis is in the degradation stage. Quadricep tendonitis makes the quad muscles deteriorate as it is really hard to activate the quad muscles properly without pain, well most importantly activate the inner quad muscle that supports the knee joint the most. I started taking CBD oil which helped with the joint pain I was having which made it easier to exercise, I start doing things the knees over toes guy does which has brought my knees to feeling the best they have felt in the last 15 years. Building back the muscles in my legs has really taken away the pain I was having in the knee joints and I've nearly gotten rid of the quadricep tendonitis. So I thank my surgeon for scaring me out of pursing my dreams to be a Professional Basketballer, because I probably wouldn't be running around like I do at this age if he didn't.
B.Roy had a full on jump shot in 6th grade. We had some ballers at Hamilton and he was on a different level, we all definitely knew he was going to the NBA.
when u training a genius & gifted personal, worst training & teaching in the world still will make him/her be on world class level. same with everything from academic to physical stuff. Those people get away with anything.
This video makes me hopeful about the future because it seems that we're still behind on information and implementation. A lot of things didn't get proper understanding until the 70s. It's a little insane that we didn't have more proper care in place for a multimillion dollar athlete like Brandon Roy, but maybe we will have that proper care in place for things like ligaments and heart problems in the near future.
This brought back so many fond memories of Roy. Also, another athlete I used to really root for is Phil Jones, a defender for Manchester United. He is/was the running joke for how much a player could be injured and still be on the team. I recently learned that his situation is basically the same as Roy's, in which he has no meniscus. That really opened my eyes, and now it all makes sense.

Just stumbled across your channel. Have really enjoyed your videos so far. I can only imagine how many careers have been shortened because of poor re/pre-hab.

Very cool idea for a series. Some thoughts going forward: basketball players’ careers cut short by foot injuries and the influence of primitive footwear on those injuries: Zydeunas Ilgauskas, Bill Walton, Rick Smiths, etc. and how has this epidemic been curtailed by contemporary show design.
if you also think about the evolution of the shoes allowes for less hip and knee issues, because. the padding and shock absorption, leading to less of an impact in the knees and hips
I have meniscus tear two years ago. I still have the feeling of unstainbility from my knee until now. Need some tips for make my knee stronger because right now the only exercise I done is walking and cycling as I am to afraid to run and jump, squats and etc that relate to knee. Thanks
I tore my left and right meniscus, my ACL and had a bone bruise back in September. All in my left knee and all that because I stepped in a little hole while sprinting in a football (soccer) game. I plan to come back in the winter as I don't want to come back too soon and I want to work on stability of my core, hips etc.
This has helped me understand my own meniscus injury back when I was 17. I was trying to make a tackle at full speed against the most immovable RB imaginable (300+lbs), my leg was at an odd angle due to his size preventing proper tackling form. We went from full speed to an instant stop, felt a pop, and I had completely snapped my outer meniscus. My doctor was actually shocked that my ACL and MCL were intact, but my meniscus had torn all the way through, he described it like an explosive had gone off in my knee. He opted to repair my meniscus and my senior year was done. A year later, after my college freshman season, I was still experiencing pain in my knee, so they recommended I go back for another surgery. The MRI showed that part of my interior meniscus hadn’t fully healed, so I got a partial meniscectomy. The worse part was that the scope found that even the healed part of my meniscus was showing early signs of arthritis. Arthritis before the age of 19. Now I’m 21 and my knee has been horrible since; I don’t have full mobility, resting in certain positions causes my knee to painfully lock up, standing too long causes pain around my entire knee, my itband & hamstring are now always tight, and I can’t trust my leg to do anything. At least I know now why it didn’t fully heal.
Are you depressed or suicidal? Im in the same situation as you, i have arthirits and im 22, ive had knee injuries and worn out my knees. I just wanted healthy knees that was all. I was born with hypermobility knees
I've been a personal trainer for about 15 years. Those videos are surprising, both on how clueless his trainer is show unstable his legs were. If I saw a client like that it's a huge red flag. I've had clients with knee issues, it's a building process and you can get good results if you do it right.
Tell me about it. I wouldn't even have had him doing lunges, risk vs reward. It looks like he is in pain doing these and why the need for extra bands around his legs? Plenty of other ways to strengthen the muscles around the knees and up and down the chain (glutes and feet/ankles/calves) rather than loaded squats and lunges etc that are so knee dominant. This is shocking.
When I suffered my knee injury I broke my patella, my tibia, my fibula, and my femur. I also tore my mcl and acl as well as my meniscus. I was told that my leg looked like a noodle which I don't remember since I was in shock.
Haven't had a meniscus in my left knee since I was 12yrs old. Was training with roller blades trying to replicate the take-off to steal bases for baseball.. something that i thought worked cuz I led the league in stolen bases (had 2x as many as the 2nd place kid)... Until one of the wheels hit a rock and slid way out and collapsed my knee like 60° sideways, completely tearing my meniscus. Dr said I was young and wouldn't need it lol.. rehab took like 9months or more and it wasn't "right" for a few yrs, then the next year I tore my hip flexors in the same leg, which kinda killed my explosiveness and killed any chance of getting a scholarship for Center field, and had to switch to pitching and 1st base, which caused another hip flexor tear when stretching to catch a throw from 3rd... Remember it like yesterday (more like 25yrs ago)
I had my left meniscus removed when I was about 20. 48 now. Never hindered me at all in basketball - and I was reasonably explosive. Even now, I refer to it as my good knee as I don’t have any pain there. I tore my left achilles at 30 and broke my right foot after rehab from that tear. Quit bball, took up MTB and a bit of BMX. Had some minor lower back issues. My right knee developed patella cartilage damage around 38. Doctors wanted to operate and keep me off serious sports. But I said no and after 5 years of Muay Thai I am now playing inline roller hockey for 5 years. Lots of squats and strengthening kept me going. Basically I keep moving, even through mild pain, and the pain always recedes. It seems as if the body develops a way of dealing with problems if you keep nudging it to do its job. And of course I make sure to let it rest enough.
He can look forward to knee replacement at a young age. Sad. I’ve had “clean ups” on my right knee after tearing my ACL. When I tore it, I damaged the medial meniscus. It was repaired and was OK for about 20 yrs. But in my 50s, pain, swelling and I finally tore the meniscus again during a work training scenario (LE training). Now swelling, pain, arthritis...
Hey Doc, DPT student here wondering if you could share your thoughts on something. Do you have any idea why they didn’t just do a meniscal transplant surgery for Brandon back in the day? From what I’ve read, the surgery is relatively uncommon, but he fits the bill as far as patient eligibility goes, and the procedure supposedly has been around for a while. It’s a shame he didn’t go in that direction. Any thoughts to the feasibility/applicability of this procedure for a guy like Brandon back in the day? I cant help but feel like he could’ve prolonged his career quite a bit if he did go that route, along with proper rehab.
Loving the content! Other suggestions: Derrick Rose Kevin Durant's Achilles. Todd Gurley. Steve Nash's or Larry Bird's back. T-Mac. Yao Isaiah Austin Bogut
This may be a stupid question but: why can we not replace the meniscus? It seems like we would have some sort of device they could replicate what the meniscus does.
This is sad it reminds me of my dad who who played college basketball at Kansas in the 70s, he has massive knee problems starting when he was 17 when he got a infected blood clot in his leg, he when then suffer multiple knee injuries which the is the 70s and no one gave a shit, obviously he quit basketball and became a doctor but by the time he was 35 his osteoarthritis had developed so bad it was at grade three and due to not doing much physical activity due to knee pain he became over weight and shorty it became level 4 and he had to get a knee replacement becomes he could barely walk, it’s crazy Brandon Roy lasted as long as he did after seeing thing my dad went through
Yes as someone who used to train people seeing his form during those lunges made me cringe . Knee were way to unstable and the way his knee would go to the outside of his feet was not good. The trainer should have noticed these things . If this is the kind of help he was getting that's terrible.
I still wear my Derrick Rose Chicago Bulls jersey, sit in a dark room and cry.
Me too
His injury caused a lot of ptsd
I’m not sure if I should laugh or cry with you.
Dude me too man :/
I never watched a NBA game the same again.
Yeah, can’t do a series on “greatest careers cut short by injuries” without half of them being Portland Trailblazers.
Damn.
Throw the whole franchise away
Blazers and Clippers
😭
Bill Walton, Sam Bowie, Greg Oden and of course Brandon Roy.
How unlucky that Roy and Oden BOTH ended via injury! 2 players that could’ve been a dynamic duo for the same team both tragically ended. Such a shame
The Blazers were 52-10 when Roy, Aldridge and Oden played. Oh what could have been... :/

Rudy Fernandez and batum
@Banjo Kobuto Aldridge, KD, A few years of roy, wes matthews, prime batum, robin lopez. That team could have been truly sick
They used to beat up on the Lakers during Kobe's championship run.
Dr. Brian: “I’m about to end this trainer’s whole career”
It's not super well documented but the Blazers training staff was completely incompetent. They mishandled Greg Oden's injuries as well as Roy's.
Did they just hire anyone to take care of their money makers?
The trainer did that to himself as well as the players he was supposed to be helping.

You are better at breaking down injuries than I am at anything in my life...well done, Doc.

Other suggestions:
Derrick Rose
Kevin Durant's Achilles.
Todd Gurley.
Steve Nash's or Larry Bird's back.
T-Mac.
Yao
Isaiah Austin
Bogut
This may be a stupid question but: why can we not replace the meniscus? It seems like we would have some sort of device they could replicate what the meniscus does.
Can you do a video on the Kneesovertoesguy and what you think about his philosophy based on your background? Thank you and great video

This is sad it reminds me of my dad who who played college basketball at Kansas in the 70s, he has massive knee problems starting when he was 17 when he got a infected blood clot in his leg, he when then suffer multiple knee injuries which the is the 70s and no one gave a shit, obviously he quit basketball and became a doctor but by the time he was 35 his osteoarthritis had developed so bad it was at grade three and due to not doing much physical activity due to knee pain he became over weight and shorty it became level 4 and he had to get a knee replacement becomes he could barely walk, it’s crazy Brandon Roy lasted as long as he did after seeing thing my dad went through
I got to witness his career high against Phoenix in person (I'm a huge Blazers fan). This video makes me so sad :'(
Yes as someone who used to train people seeing his form during those lunges made me cringe . Knee were way to unstable and the way his knee would go to the outside of his feet was not good. The trainer should have noticed these things . If this is the kind of help he was getting that's terrible.
Could a cadaver meniscus been used?
Can you do a video on Ben Roethlisberger's elbow injury from last year?

If you watch how Brandon Roy played and each jump shot he took. He put sooooo much legs into each jumper.
Praying for Zion. Most of the time, he lands with one leg. 😞
Man Roy was a beast, damn those injuries.
You should do players like T-Mac, Greg Oden, Derrick Rose etc.
