It's in instances like this that I really admire first responders. They're trained and all, but 99% of the time, they're just standing around, chilling, watching the game, eating hotdogs, just like everyone else.
Then BOOM they get called and all that training has to come to life instantly and accurately. They have to save a life.

As someone who was diagnosed with hypertrophy cardiomyopathy, before finding myself in hospital and suffering from 2 cardiac arrests in 3 days (in hospital), only to then be told my heart (left ventricle) had less than 10% (EFR) and that my only option would be an LVAD or death, i totally understand what he experienced, and what path he could go down. A lot of people don't understand how the heart functions, or the fact that any damage done to the heart does not magically recover. Even with medicine or tablets, any % of the damage done is forever. The only thing you can do is stall, or stabilize things so that more damage is not done. Myocarditis is different in the sense that its pointing to the muscle. But even some cases do not recover.
In regards to my story, i wasn't allowed to leave the hospital without a defib vest (Zoll) that i had to wear 24 hours a day, and i wasn't allowed to drive. It was a risk to have a shower because i had to remove the vest. (Im under 35 yrs old). Then 4 months later, i had an LVAD implanted. 9 months after that, i was successfully transplanted. Today, im a few days from a yr post-transplant. All of this happened to me in the space of 2.5 years. And its a journey i wouldn't wish on anyone.
Imagine being in a state of being where you're body is constantly telling you that you are dehydrated, but you are limited to fluids (even 800 mil water a day) because your heart is not functioning well enough to move t water around your body so the resul is that you end up fluid overloaded - which then puts more stress on the heart causing more damage. Daily, you are reduced to having ice chips, but you are extremely thirsty. You can't walk more than 4 steps without being out of breath. You can't sleep, eat, or even walk to the bathroom. I lived 9 months with an LVAD, which minimized these symptoms but had me living on a battery.
Cardiac arrest is not something little, its not an accident, and its possible that doctors will not find a cause. This is also the case with heart failure. Its very common that doctors do not ever find the cause of the heart failure. And when heart failure begins, there is no recovery. The heart cannot recover from damage. So lets all hope that Bronny never has to experience this. I only hope the young man has a long and happy life, but most of all, a normal life. I hope he never has to experience what ive experienced.
its about time that we take more initiative to bring more awareness to the heart, its function, and the concerns as well as what to look for so that we can help prevent others from ever experiencing this. The myth is that its an old age thing. its not. More and more people that suffer from this are young, and very young too.

It's been happening as long as I can remember. The internet just makes it viral, for a start. And shockingly enough; COVID, that pesky little disease which attacks your lungs and heart, increases your risk of heart failure (Source: ''Repeat COVID-19 infections increase risk of organ failure, death.'''). If there is to be a correlation, you've approached it with your shirt on backwards. Wouldn't be surprising if the increases in blood-pressure, binge lifestyles, anti-depressants/medications etc seen in young adults play a role too.

I have congenital Long QT (my grandfather was actually listed in the original paper describing the disease in the 70's), so as a sports fan and fellow athlete I'm always intrigued and particularly concerned seeing cardiac issues in high level competition. The Damar Hamlin incident, while obvsoiusly scary and undesirable, truly is a landmark moment in my opinion; with such a high profile game being nationally televised, it really thrust cardiac emergencies into the spotlight like never before. CPR is so important and AEDs should be everywhere. It was amazing to see an emergency plan work effectively and for the aftermath to involve so many other organizations reevaluate their emergency plans, and for the public to get a better sense of how to care about these situations. So thankful that Bronny was in an effective space. Thank you, Doc, for the thoughtful discourse you facilitate with these videos

Great video. The abnormal heart tissue in HCM can definitely disrupt the normal electrical signals in the heart as Dr. Stutterer mentioned, but it’s important to also mention how HCM can actually obstruct blood flow out of the heart during exercises when the heart contracts more vigorously. Both mechanisms can cause cardiac arrest in athletes.

      @cameronno6039 9 месяцев назад

More data is starting to suggest the fibrotic component is the primary arrhythmogenic component. You can repair the obstruction and retain the same arrhythmia risk. A defibrillator is likely in the future of any athlete considering return to play with this condition. The obstruction may still contribute, but it's becoming less of the true concern.

I am a Medicare broker and I have over 700 clients. Medicare is for seniors age 65+, and the last 18 months or so, the amount of clients I’ve had who have passed away due to strokes, blood clots, or heart related issues has been terrifying.
Between 2018 - 2020, I’d lose a couple clients every few months or so to death. I get informed when a client is deceased and I keep track of my attrition and the reason for each lost client (moved out of state, deceased, etc.). In August of 2021 I had 11 deceased clients in one month, and most were due to strokes, blood clots, or something heart related. And in 2022 the number of my clients who passed away is about 2.5X the number of clients who passed in 2020.
I don’t care what anyone says, my book of business is a large enough sample size for me to draw my own conclusions and I’ve seen it with my own eyes. I’m very worried for my parents and other family who got it. I’m sure it has saved many lives by protecting the vulnerable high risk population, but it’s also cost many lives and the sad part is that many of deaths were people who were young and healthy and had a greater chance of dying from the flu than Covid

Hi Dr. Sutterer, can we discuss the facts?
    1) Bronny James was forced to receive the Covid-19 booster vaccine just a few weeks ago to attend USC as an athlete.
    2) Your acquired definition would perfectly describe the root cause after taking this vaccine.
    3) Bronny James has been afforded the genetics of the greatest athlete to grace the planet, with addition to optimal nutritionists, athletic trainers, and a stress free lifestyle outside of pushing for the NBA.
    4) If doctors like yourself were to actually step up and give your thorough prognosis regarding the root cause(which is very clearly acquired from the covid vaccine he was forced to take weeks ago), instead of following the narrative on CNN(which is so befuddled when an 18 year old child has cardiac arrest all so frequently after 2020). Just maybe we could actually enlighten people to not take this vaccination that clearly has implications of myocarditis on the fda label.
What a world we live in, where everyone will just forget that this vaccine has no long term efficacy, and that instead of dogs, mice, and monkeys being initial clinical trial targets, we used humans instead for this. Shame on CNN, and anyone else who is not highly considering this vaccine as the root cause of so many of these athletes suddenly having cardiac arrest in the recent years following the administering of the vaccine.

According to Ratsef Levi, statistician and professor at MIT, emergency calls for cardiac arrest in Israel (these types of studies are not done in the U.S.) have increased 25% since the rollout of a certain thing that we are not allowed to talk about.

What’s odd to me is that this is the second occurrence of cardiac arrest in a USC basketball player within the last year, I do think the NCAA should conduct an investigation on what USC Men’s Basketball is doing for conditioning, drills, etc to see if maybe it’s too strenuous on some of the athletes.

It's just IMPOSSIBLE that programs like the one at USC would introduce their players to steroids. Oh wait. I forgot this is real life, not some fairy tale world.

As a carer for older folks,my best wishes to the James family.
I can only hope that he looks at his long time life and sacrifice his dream of an nba career.
I have seen this many a time and out and out sports activity or long periods of stress triggers a cardiac...regardless of what any "high end" doctor, nurse or health official says.
    God speed bronny.

This situation is a heavy reminder that everyone should take a certified cpr course because what if you're in a situation with a friend, family, or stranger or just you and alone with another where there is no medical team on site. Then its on you to keep the person alive while the ambulence and emts get there. If you don't know cpr then you could fail to save that persons life when a few hours of time to learn and be knowledgeable could save them. Freak stuff can happen to any person of any health anywhere so we all gotten make sure to be prepared for those around us. 90% of those who suffer cardiac arrest die I saw online since either no one is there for them, or no one knows how to do cpr correctly, or they don't recover, so its vital everyone learns to save these ppls lives. I am going to make sure that I research local cpr classes and enter in one to make sure im educated enough because shit like this is scary and humbling of our mortality. I hope he recovers, and this does not pose a long term issue for him.

@@hopehope5406 you're right on it, thats exactly what I was thinking too. The classes should be mandatory event a few times a year in high school and colleges too. Also its worth noting that 90% of those who experience cardiac arrest die because no one gets to them in time or knows cpr correclty, so its even more essential and also a miracle Bronny survived.
