My dad was born with a congenital heart defect, which was only picked up as his dad was an orthopaedic surgeon and they were playing with this stethoscope and my grandfather picked up the issue. He was ultimately flown from Australia to the Mayo clinic and was the first child to under their evolutionary heart valve replacement. He was the older person to have this heart surgery. I hope Bronny can make a full recovery.

I have CPVT, so one of the congenital heart defects, among some others, which was thankfully caught before any arrests or fainting issues. I love playing basketball so it was a difficult time when I was having symptoms and the doctor told me not to do any strenuous exercise. The good news is that there are very effective treatments these days and I currently am able to do anything I want, including long days of basketball and weight lifting, without any symptoms. I'm sure it will be the same for Bronny and he won't have to give up his dreams for being unlucky with this birth defect.

Having a congenital cardiac defect doesn't rule out other possible contributory factors which could have led to the cardiac arrest. In fact, most cases are preceded by some sort of electrolyte imbalance, viral/bacterial infection, myocarditis, etc. These factors work collectively to exacerbate cardiac strain and lead to SCA.

    • @mikhailboldt3417
      @mikhailboldt3417 8 месяцев назад

Because medicine is imperfect that’s why. We all want to think that doctors are supposed to be these prophetic geniuses who can spot a horrible illness from a mile away but that’s just not the case. There’s a reason it’s called practicing medicine not perfectly applying medicine. Doctors are human beings they do tons of scans everyday on tons of patients. On every scan or test there will be incidental findings anomalies you don’t know what to do with questionable results etc. No one knows for sure what will or won’t come of those potential issues. Medical doctors can speculate make educated guesses but the truth is things happen. A issue thought to be serious ends up being not serious, an issue thought to be minor becomes life threatening. It happens a lot sadly. It doesn’t matter if you’re worth a trillion dollars or don’t have a penny in your pocket mistakes happen. Rich people die of unexplained issues so do poor people. Rich people bet misdiagnosed so do poor folks. Money is not always a golden ticket to brilliant treatment and wonderful medical care. Doctors who work in expensive clinics frequented by the wealthy are not always better than those who work in less well of places. Things are missed things are not properly considered and understood. It’s an unfortunate part of medicine but it does happen. There’s no need to inject conspiracies into it when there’s perfecta logical explanations for everything

cardiac arrest with WPW is EXTREMELY extremely rare - most people live there whole live with WPW and never get it ablated. I first had symptoms at 16, lifelong competitive swimmer, swam in college, drs never recommended to treat it, finally had drs tell me to get it treated at 24 when my palpatations started getting longer and more frequent. Completely cured now.

@kitmarlowe6604 I'm glad yours was okay! mines been not that easy I have a rarer case i guess. they went in to ablate during an EP study but could not due to the conduction paths being too close to eachother. I'm very symptomatic daily and on two medications to treat it since I'm not able to have the surgical ablation. it's going okay with the meds but my lifestyle is significantly altered and I am not medically cleared for competitive sports or running. each case is different, some people are fine, others not so much. 🤷

I’m a pediatric cardiologist. There is no scenario I can imagine that a VSD or ASD resulted in cardiac arrest during exercise in a previously healthy high level athlete.
My hunch is that he had a congenital coronary anomaly- anomalous coronary origin or coronary myocardial bridge (both surgically correctable and both can stay clinically silent prior to presenting with arrest).
A left heart obstructive lesion such as aortic stenosis could lead to arrest during exercise but produces a heart murmur and so would not have gone undetected for so long.
Arrhythmia syndromes such as long QT, brugada, CPVT, are common culprits, but would not be cured surgically.

An older athlete would be bound to get thorough checks throughout their career but his pro career hasn't even started yet.
There's been athletes well in their 30's who only discovered a congenital heart defect when it started causing trouble at +30.

      @@jimbollenbacher368 most likely, it's a medium-sized defect.
If the defect is quite large, it will be noticed (with symptoms) in the neonatal period.
If it is too small, it will be notice only on examination (ie, the patient will not have any symptoms, but the defect can be heard on cardiac auscultation with a stethoscope). Think of the noise from a tiny leak in a garden hose: it is loud but most of the water still comes out from the sprout. A very large hole that will be silent, but sometimes diverts water to the extent where it doesn't reach the sprout - these kids present with symptoms around birth, and you have to treat them real quick.
Most "medium-sized" defects can go entirely unnoticed - especially in someone who does not exert themself. In those that do exert themselves, detection depends upon the level of exertion, and the extent of cardiac muscle remodeling from to compensation. The remodeling might eventually distort the electrical wiring of the heart, and this could lead to arrhythmias and sudden cardiac arrests.
Even though medicals are required in signing new athletes, they still miss some cardiac defects. And since I started following European soccer in the 80's I know of not less than 10 (active, healthy, and young) players that had cardiac events. I have even witness some of these live on TV....
      1) Marc Vivien Foe - 2003 - did not survive
      2) Fabrice Muamba - 2012 - never returned to active sports
      3) Christian Eriksen - 2021 - returned to active sport in 2022

A "congenital heart defect" is a general term that could mean a number of things, so Doc is making an educated guess as to what the defect is. A "CHD" is something you're born with, so Bronny has had this “CHD” for eighteen years seemingly without any issues. Why now? What changed?
Why after eighteen years of intense physical activity, would he all of a sudden have a cardiac issue? Is it possible that something he acquired could have stressed the defect and caused the heart to malfunction? Could something like myocarditis (an inflammation of the heart muscle) have triggered a cardiac issue?
A viral infection or the introduction of an MRNA vaccine could possibly cause myocarditis which could possibly trigger a cardiac issue. Do I know for a fact that's what happened? No, but neither does Doc. It's still speculation at this point.

Doesn't sound weird to me. Their both athletes and at the college years the body is still maturing, and they're trying to go pro. That's going to expose things that most of us could live with and ignore. Also, both Shaq and LeBron have crazy growth genes.
