Making quantity art over quality art is one of the biggest reason why I'm debating on just quitting Instagram completely.. I'd like to post just for my portfolio because I've been posting since the beginning of my art journey.. but when it comes to engagement I feel like it's just a waste of time nowadays.. and if you post reels you get random audiences who only like that real or are not even into art.. so it's hard to grow a community.

I personally think that it’s not about the amount of followers you have, but the amount of engagement and support they are willing to give you.
If you have 200 followers but each of them comment on your post, purchase your work, and continuously support you, then that has more value than 10k followers and only 50 of them actively support you.

My socials grew WITH me (4 first years of my journey!). But that account got deleted, and seeing the disconnect where my much more polished skills were less appreciated made it easy to stop that thought process. Same story here, I opened mine in mid-2021 and my follower count went up to 300 and something by the end of 2022, and since then, it's at a standstill. It's true that it can be frustrating sometimes, but IG is just a tool for me to share my art. I try not to become a slave to the algorithm and to have total control, and most importantly, as long as I love to draw, that I love what I do, that's all that matters to me, the rest goes by the wayside xD

Losing followers or not getting much growth pretty much hurts for some. It doesn’t if you’re mainly doing it as a hobby or don’t rely on social media as much.
But for those who rely on praise and positive reinforcement tend to latch on that. I deal with it more on Twitter then IG (as I’ve been gaining followers there), where I was at 1k but lost 100 over the course of 2 years despite actively posting. I’ve been slowly regaining them as of recently and almost at 1k there again.
But also try not to tie it with my skill, as some who even draw better than me have less followers. Also subconsciously used social media as proof that I had potential to be in the art field. But nonetheless, follower count doesn’t equate to getting an art job, people have different tastes and there are those who’ll stay regardless of how often you post or what you draw.

    • @mewTripled
      @mewTripled  Год назад +28

Yeah it definitely hurts when artists rely on it to some degree to make a living. Or some artists want to see if going the independent route is a possible option for them, but the loss / lack of growth can definitely be discouraging. It's great for those who are able to keep it purely as a hobby!

Making a living as ANY kind of influencer (artists included) can be volatile and unpredictable. The number of likes/follows are especially crucial because it brings more followers and exposure. Do they always and automatically translate to income? No.

    • @PinkNintendoDuo87
      @PinkNintendoDuo87 Год назад +7

Let’s be honest. For most artists, social media are better off as platforms for stuff like promotion/exposure. Even the top earning artfluencers (art influencers) can’t solely rely on likes/follows/sponsorships as “stable” sources of income. Being less reliant on these factors can bring wonders to your art career (especially outside of the “influencer bubble”).
(No hate to any artfluencer out there.)

Thank you so much for sharing this, I appreciate this advice as a fellow artist sort of lost as to what Im doing with my own content.
Im kind of just creating things without really knowing what to do with them or how to get more eyes on them, but I think it's a thing that I need to change up and provide something different that is a little more simpler, than the complex things I draw...if I want to see more growth.
It's given me a lot to think about.
But what I appreciated most, is what you had to say about tags, because I see so many artists saying things like "don't even both with tags they're useless" ...but I see ZERO interaction without a single tag, so for me, they are helpful. I think they do something and even if it's just 2 more eyes on my art, that's more than enough for me.

🙁But I still feel sad that whenever I do post things those likes are mostly from me. My follower count is nothing when none of them are appreciating my work. When you mentioned bots understand but why whenever I view my IG Story there are e.g. like 50 people looking at it but none of them are looking at my posts. What attracts me most is your full color scheme, of warm and cool colors. As for Instagram it is the first thing we see, before actually seeing the full picture. This is more than likely the reason for your doodle comics not to be at full swing. But sold as a comic people are more likely looking at the detail covering and the content more. After all IG short attention is like 5 sec and next.

I post from time to time comics on instagram and tagging your comics with its themes is a must. A lot of people who are searching those hashtags will love to see your take on the theme, be it cute animals, friendships, social issues or school advice. Also, those people will likely share it if it's something that matters to them. When we're making comics and telling stories with them we need to try and find the public to whom is being made. In general, people not interested in art as a whole on instagram will still like reading comics because its about story and themes. I completely agree with all your advice!! It's important to do art for yourself and not social media metrics. Thank you for echoing that thought. It's too bad when artists are let down by their art when they don't get social media praise.

I've honestly been glad my followers have just stayed around despite me not posting much on social media because of AI art companies. I plan to go private soon just so I can keep posting as there's a bunch of stuff I've really been wanting to share, but not stolen :') My main problem is just reach I suppose? And that's only gonna get even harder going private. I just hate the whole instant dopamine culture, both for consumer and creator as it kills both parties. Creators have to supply more, on top of corporate jobs expecting more for less pay; and consumers easily spend lots of time mindlessly scrolling for a bit of temporary dopamine, as so much is available in such little time. I hate feeling like a robot being made to post content everyday and promoting that culture of expecting something new from the same creators everyday for a sense of fulfillment. It's a greedy world out there where companies prioritize their own profit and wealth over the health and sanity of the everyday people. :(
Watch yourselves, even on the platforms you depend on.

When people talk about artist on Instagram, I don't know why it's always digital art only....I don't find any traditional artist here like me!

I find it weird too. RUclips seems to be more on our side, but Instagram I don't really see a lot of sketch artist anymore. People love color-and some of friends ask me why I don't add color; and it's not because I'm lazy, it's just that I can't blend color with my style of art.

Mostly because it's hard for me to post more than once a week. And as I m currently not fulltime artist + parenthood I m often very busy. But I wish to grow my audience and I want to try some effort. Starting by making my style more consistent... I almost gave up last month but I litteraly can't !! 😄

Personally ( im a 33 year old artist but ALSO follow other artists) i follow whoever artists Art i like (specific artstyle).
I dont care about reels or how most artists do theyr art, im interested in either “finished sketches” ( with that i mean
,lets say a sketch with for example pencil , that shows a certain anime character , if its a self drawn chara or a actual
Chara from a existing anime/manga from japan/korea doesnt matter to me eather)….. so overall, i just like certain type of art and follow that. I also only follow my absolute fav artists , which are not THAT many. For any others that i find good but not super great, i follow with a side profile, just to look at them sometimes (personally ,i dont like to follow 1000s of artists with my actual profile, hence why i use a side profile+ it would take way too long to mute those ,that i only find ok, and i already follow around 2500 profiles with the side profile, that is btw ONLY used, to follow any type of artists nothing else). I have 2 art profiles (both where i post totally different type of art) 1 personal profile and the side prof that i was talking about, with one of my actual art profiles i ,as said, follow only my absolute fav artists, which are around 150 profiles).
ANYWAYS, since im also pregnant right now and have a lot of changes in life, i wasnt able to have time doing art , means im not posting regularly at all anymore, so yeah, that wont get me new followers right now, tho i never had many either. +Most of them were also never really active on my profile, so thats also that… i do art since around 26 years now as a hobby, started as a child ,was doing a education at a art academy in my 20s for 4 years in glass/porcelain art painting ,but never made a buisness out of it , did sell art before but not much at all).

from an audience perspective and how we interact with posts:
changing styles completely might make people not recognize your art. I sometimes find myself unfollowing people when they appear on my feed and I don't remember following them, then I check their feed and turns out I loved their art but it changed.
But having extreme consistency ("unified" posts as you said) is not good either. It might seem like a good idea because it makes your profile very aesthetically pleasing and makes your style more recognizable, but you have to think about a couple of things:
    - most of the time we are interacting with the individual posts in our feed and not with your whole profile, so making it unified and aesthetic is completely lost to your followers. You gotta aim to make each individual post as eye catching as possible. If not, only your most loyal fans are gonna say "hey! this artist posted!". Not every follower is a total fan and not every interaction is from a follower.
-having a very unified style also drives away the people that do check your profile. it looks nice over all but it also becomes boring when choosing which posts to look at closely. By having variety the people that do check your profile will have something to catch their eye that they'll go and look and interact with.
Remember that most of the people checking your profile are probably not following you and are checking if it is worth it so if they see a few stand out posts in your profile they might follow. If they only see one or two things they'll just like or save those posts and leave. The people that already follow you that check your profile are most likely fans that saw something in their feed or stories and are checking to see if they missed any posts.
Most of your followers and fans are gonna be seeing their feed with your stuff mixed with everything else they follow. You gotta make things engaging and fun because a lot of times we don't remember every single artist we follow. I won't remember your username or your artstyle, but I will remember the specific artwork I liked or the story that I want to continue, and if I see it often enough I'll start recognizing you as the artist.
you also have to think about the type of interaction you want. relatable and funny stuff are great because they get a lot of likes and get shared around. Like you said stuff about friends, parters, family etc might make people share it through dms with their friend/parter/family, but most times when someone sends me a post on DMs I don't go follow the user. I just like the post. I think the best posts are gonna be ongoing stories and funny jokes. Jokes get shared around on DMs, stories, get tons of likes and might get people wanting to see more. Ongoing stories are a good way to get followers because if they like the story they might go to he profile, check the previous posts to see the rest of the story, get invested and then follow to get the new parts later.

Controversial opinion: organic social media is a waste of time for most conventional offline visual artists. In fact it may be a huge liability as far as getting your work stolen/reproduced without authorization or compensation by AI/machine learning technology. Pay per click may have potential if you are trying to generate leads for niche commisions

My Reels are always done with thought and quality, as everything has to be perfect. Whebever i see low quality reels exploding in my niche, i blame myself. But i know that's wrong. Personally, I think online art blogs and such are oversaturated, and the audiences that consume this media has drastically changed. For example, I used to follow tons of artists on my dA page, but as the years go by, I've stopped following anyone in particular, as well as most of the ones I did follow have moved on from the platform. Really, I just don't have time to be all agog with the newest player on the block if they're not super-huge or super-noticable, plus, the next generation of art followers, well, let's just say they consume media much differently than we did. In short, we'ra all transitory.
