Absolutely agree about reels, I used to post pics 90% of the time getting 70-80 likes per post (sometimes 100+), only doing reels when I liked the trend, but then I tired to make more reels to engage more people, and yeah, my follower count went up, but interaction with my posts whet absolutely downfall, and I started to get 20, max 30 likes on posts, and 99% of people who followed me through reels were just ghost followers, who didn’t show any activity on my page, so I basically had to start from scratch and still trying to get back to how it was before 😵💫
When it comes to figuring out how to make money with art, I've basically been a fish flip flapping around on the beach, with no idea how to get back into thee ocean. I tried social media before when I was 26, and ended up quitting a year after that, because of burn out trying to get followers. I don't blame the Algorithm. It was my fault I failed. I'm 29 now, and I'm very hesitant to give social media another try. I recognize the fact you need to make content for the viewer and not for yourself. But trying to figure out how to dance the right way to get attention is soul draining. And then after all that effort, you could still end up getting nowhere, because there is some luck involved unfortunately. I used to have an artist friend on there, who started gaining traction after one of her posts did well. She had no idea why that specific drawing did well. I can only suspect either someone famous shared it, or she accidentally did something that lined up with some random event. Who the hell knows lol. Another issue, is that your audience may not be interested in wanting to hire you for a commission. Or to go to your website. You need to be careful with the type of people you are attracting to your page. You could have 100k followers and be broke. You really got to go in expecting to fail quite often. Maybe make more then one Instagram account, and just hope you dance the right way with one of them someday.
You don't necessarily need a social media following to be successful as an artist, though it does depend on what type of art you're making and how you want to monetize it.
I agree with @digi3363, I see artists with a couple of thousand followers making more than those with hundred thousand followers. When one think of building an audience it can be very discouraging if you think of getting hundred k followers. One doesn’t need that much, you only need enough. I mean it also depends if you want to become millionaire artist which is another story lol.
your speaking facts i dont know why she is still promoting instagram. Instagram will NEVER push new accounts. Its the probably not the best platform to start if you dont have account already.
@@TheSvartdemon that is so silly. of course you can grow a new instagram account. unless you post content no one wants, then of course you won't get followers.
@@digi3363 This. Some of my art heroes (I'm talking about artists working for DreamWorks and such) have like 1500 followers on IG. There's life and opportunities out of social media!!
Thanks so much for this! It really reinforced a few things I'd just started noticing, particularly with the reels. I've been trying to reassess how I approach social media, and this video was a helpful place to start 😊
I'm glad this could be helpful! Yeah I think reels can work for some people esp. new artists! But maybe for some established ones who are known for a certain thing it might not be that much more substantial help - either way experimenting is the best way to know haha
This may be an odd request, but could you give us advice on how to make the Instagram carousels? I haven't figured out how to make them work with my content, but I'd love to give those a try on my page...
hey mew im about to start my small shop, im gonna star naking content about characters i like and comics and other stuff, this is also like my last project before graduating uni, im a little scared, scared that i start drawing what i like and my whole body has been saying to give it a try, to give it my best try and that nobody really likes it, i know that what matters most is doing what im passionate about, and im in a really comftarble possition right now, i live with my parents, but still, its fucking scary thinking that nobody will like it, and that i might hurt all of my chances getting a god job in a future. Any advice?
Look, you gotta do what you gotta do to earn your living, and I respect you for that. But I miss how your channel was back in the day when I first discovered you in Jan-Feb of 2020, when you were still super foul-mouthed and told the bishes to stay hosome. (I know you had to change that for your corporate work, I get it) Now you're just... well, blunt as it is to say, you're kind of a shill now. Ffs, you use an app to automate your IG DMs! It's not about engaging directly with people and sparking a true connection between them and you + your work, it's about pleasing the algorithm in the name of maintaining relevance on a social platform. Adam Duff gave some fantastic advice in one of his recent videos; "Follow your passions and everything else will fall into place," and what applies here, "Don't take advice from artists who aren't where you want to be." I wanna make comics and stuff too, but I don't wanna be like you. You're about being in the corporate world and following the trends, and I'm about railing against those same trends in the underground. As artists, we're cut from different cloths. We're from different worlds. Despite that, you've inspired the shit out of me over the years, and I wish you all the best because your art is amazing and you deserve to follow your dreams all the same, regardless of whether I agree with your approach or not. Stay hosome, bish ❤
Damnn that stings but it’s understandable. I won’t deny it was fun to be that version of me, but I know each season of where I have to be for my career won’t be for everyone. Also to be clear, I only automate DMS for things like sending links and information to people…not the actual bonding part. I still talk 1:1 to people, in fact, I even send VOICE NOTES and paragraphs of text to people, but when people want links and logistical information from me it’s a complete waste of my time to copy and paste to hundreds of people per week. That takes away from what I love doing AKA comics on my IG. I could send links and references to people 24/7 and the expense of my time to work on art, but then what is the point of my IG comics anyway then if I don’t even have time to make them due to that (and many other things). To each their own, and I totally respect artists’ individualities. I DON’T want you to be like me either. I just know there are artists out there trying to put their shit out whose works will never see the light of day due to the annoying landscapes of social media and all I do here is help filter out what is and isn’t helpful for our community, and I am tired of artists not being able to support themselves while bigger companies take advantage of us. Just my two cents and stay hoesome ✌🏼✌🏼
@lizardqueen6041 your comment feels a bit obnoxious tbh. It reads as you are implying that you are above her because you are choosing another way to showcase your art. And the art advice you are saying is so fantastic feels very idealistic to me and not useful at all. Unfortunately only few artists can really just follow their passion and things “fall into place”, the majority will have to take a more pragmatic approach otherwise they will not make it. My own father had the same point of view as you: he saw himself as a rebel, a true artist, placed authenticity above everything and rejected any pragmatic approach. He was very talented but unfortunately he never was able to make a living from his art, things never “fell into place”. I don’t think being too commercial is good neither, but being a bit marketing savvy in your approach to art is not a bad thing. Authenticity with a pragmatic approach is the key and I think that is what @mewTripled is trying to do.
Im ngl this is pretty pretentious and tone deaf considering the state of the state of the art, animation, and comic industries rn. Commercializing art should never be pushed as the ultimate goal or path for everyone, but it’s been an overarching theme on this channel, even “back in the day”. Community-building and providing free resources and info on how to navigate these industries during their harshest state in decades is really not something to look down upon. Im sure if given the choice most, if not all working artists would choose not to have to play into corporate politics and trend-chasing in some extents; but that’s the reality if u wanna make a living from your art.
This was pretty uncalled for, obnoxious, and unhelpful for everyone. She's out there hustling and putting in the work to make it full time in a craft she's spent her life honing, and what are you doing? Maybe this is just a burner account, but you're presenting your way as if it's better, and I don't see your art anywhere or a link to it in your bio. Who even are you? Do you have anywhere near the follower count, years of professional experience, or pressures that she has? Have you put in the hours and produced anywhere near the amount and quality of artwork that she has? Chances are she's probably been through things and is dealing with things that are on a different planet from where you are. If you were actually confident in the quality of your own work, you probably wouldn't be making hurtful comments like this. The fact is you're probably here watching this video because you too are frustrated and not where you want to be on social media, and want to grow just like she and everyone else does. Yet you have the gall to consume her content to try and get ahead, then kick dust in her face when it's not to your liking? That's pretty childish dude.
I struggle with actually posting. I post mostly stories on my IG. I work full time so I find it hard to actually create my art AND post. I have only 397 followers 🤣 and I think that's on me. Trying to figure out a happy medium
