Great video sam, this is a video I too would wish to watch if I wanted to get into the social media artist game. I would also say that being a social media artist fulltime means you're going to have to deal with the community. Without the right mentality, you can fall into mental, emotional and mental health traps. Especially when you're personally dealing with these individuals while navigating business vs a personal space. Another thing is to also be ready for scrutiny the more traction you get.
I can confirm that I, as an original 10k follower of yours am very much still following you! (I even remember messaging you back in the day lol) Not only for your art style and high quality work, but for your pearls of wisdom. This video was much needed, thanks
I want to draw realistic portraits to anime characters and OCs and backgrounds and a chicken nugget. So yeah I'm really struggling to find an art style
Honestly I struggled with the same thing. In fact, I’m only just barely getting out of that. For now, draw whatever you want. If one day you wanna draw realistic, do that. If you wanna draw anime, do that. Ik he said not too, but you don’t have to YET- post whatever you want on a alt account. The more you draw what you want the more you’ll find out abt your art. Once you feel like you’re ready to actually start building an audience, create an actual account and start posting there. I was able to get 78k on tiktok easily even with my changing art style every other piece. So yeah, he’s right about wanting to have a style so you can have the right audience, but if you still don’t know your style work on that, not growing your social media…I’d that makes any sense?
@@redtoir I also believe that's the best way and I should get out of my comfort zone of spending 70 hours on a trash artwork (internal screaming).. all I need now is motivation and patience and to practice 40 hours a day (internal screaming pt.2).. and with college things don't get easy (internal screaming pt.3). But yes that made sense thank you for your advice 😊💓
My art style changes so much and because of that I have decided not to post yet. I really like so many peoples styles and end up majorly adapting to something similar which doesn't really help when I just want to like my own style.
I understand. I’m just barely finding mine (like literally started liking it and growing it last month) just draw whatever you feel like. Don’t force yourself to draw something you dont want to- if you don’t post social media, you have the freedom of being able to draw whatever. I started finding mine by just drawing whatever I felt like. one day I wanted to paint, one day I wanted realism, one day I wanted to attempt another artists style. Experiment and do what you want! It’s the way that worked best for me. And once you think you’ve found something you like and won’t get bored of, you can start posting

So many people think a social media artist or online artist is a joke and not a job. It drives me nuts!! I have done the 9-5 job and I refuse to go back! There's ALOT of work, like you said, that goes into doing art online. I applaud you and all other social media artists for all your hard work and dedication. You have been and continue to be a huge inspiration for me! Thanks for this video!!
Hi Sam! I've been watching your videos in the past 3 weeks or so and I've been inspired by your content and message. I am a game streamer on Facebook but I've always drawn traditionally since I was 4. I'm relatively new on digital art (4 months or so ON/OFF cumulative practice time) and I paint and upload on Instagram once every year LOL. Watching your videos made me want to live that life too! Currently I have a day job and I've been thinking on transitioning to be a social media artist/streamer gradually. Thank you for the inspiration, Sam!
Thanks for making this video! I was scared abt instagram for posting art b/c instagram has stated they were wanting to focus more on 'reels' therefore attention (I thought) would be very low Even then, I still do appreciate this video cause hopefully I can get more attention online for my art w/ your tips!
well like Sam said ( social media artist ) so you got's to please the media FIRST before doing things for yaself. Most people on the long run will actually become FAN of your work. I started drawing Cartoon Portraits for free, for many people ( I mean who doesn't love free stuff right?) and now it's basically My business on instagram. so again pleasing the audience to get MORE audience is key. doing fanart of whats popular : anime, marvel or dc comic heroes etc. or sexy stuff :P and of course you got to train daily on your skills techniques etc.
I have a 14k insta art account and I’m already feeling kinda drained because of my audience expecting a certain kind of content from me and I don’t find creative freedom of doing this and social media is a part of my income now. I think the only way to go from here is to ascend to be the art gods so people are interested in what I draw, not just from the type of content I post. However Sam is right, the work is more personal than any client work you would do and you can always change your direction. I’m also gradually working on changing my direction at a slow pace to more original content than fan art but I do like fan art as well :) At the end tho I think having a social media presence is worth it and has given me opportunities I thought would never be possible. Always make sure to take care of yourself physically and mentally first before doing all of this.
@@Bunny-xr7cx I take art classes to improve my drawing skills, fan art, occasionally make comics and eventually built an audience. I also went to table at comic cons before covid happened. Mind you this was a few years of consistent work.
@@Bunny-xr7cx but honestly due to the reasons Sam and I listed above, as weird as it sounds you might not want an audience bigger than 10k when you are just starting out. At the beginning of starting out you are just free to do whatever you want and explore and after 10k was when I felt some kind of pressure.
@@Pollymichaelis yeah ive seen a few artist randomly go from 10k to 150k and then they just stop uploading because the pressure is too much. Mental health before satisfying random internet followers tbh.
@@jaytopia2924 Yes, I'd rather grow at a healthy pace and know that I have the skills and creativity to support my "clout" than have a sudden burst of popularity then couldn't maintain it... Plus art (or no matter what you're creating) is so much more than getting popularity from your work, if your happiness and your drive to create only relies on validation from others you'll never be satisfied and you'll be burnt out sooner or later. I created some fan art comics that I don't 100% like but because I knew they'd be popular. I was gaining 100 followers a day but I felt so shit, I have slowed down since then and is now more focused on studying art and drawing what I want to draw.
It sure is a blessing to have a day job so you can hold on to more creative freedom in your art. Discipline is a huge part, however, in pulling any of these off. Great vid, Sam 👍
I am an artist starting from 0. That means I don't know how to start. Thank you for the tips. They really helped me a lot. I was very thoughtful about what to do in the future. Thank you for your support.
I seem to see the tears in your eyes for a second...it's really hard, it's really hard to go from 0 to 1...hope I can keep going, I can definitely keep going, oh how am I Just saw this video...
Thank you so much because I am lost when it come my career. And I have to choose a college to go to next year so that helps a lot. I didn't consider it at all before. THANKS ❤️❤️❤️
Shooting for a combination of Social Media and Industry art. That's what I'm gonna do. Thanks for the info Mr. Samdoesart! It honestly does help a lot.
THANK YOU! I'd love to dot his as a job, sometimes tho it's knowing what to draw that I would be worried about, thinking up new ideas, I seem to come to a stop or not know what to draw alot when drawing.
As someone that has a full time job and does artwork for social media, patreon, artist alleys, selling prints/stickers online, takes commission work, and is now dabbling in youtube; let me just say, if you want to take this path then get ready to feel like you're ALWAYS behind on what you want to get done. It's a never ending cycle of "there isn't enough time!"
Oh, and I'd also like to add that Instagram is kind of a mess when it comes to anything that even skirts the line of 'sexual'. Sometimes fully nude artwork gets by just fine while other times if you draw a woman in swimsuit it'll get removed.
Its really a hard thing to balance a full time job and the social media art business. It feels like I am currently working two fulltime jobs. I know I gotta learn to relax, but its so hard when you feel like it will keep you from fullfilling your dreams
Heyy there i got a kamvas 16 highly inspired by you .. lets see what can i do.. (before watching your videos i didnt even like drawiing or painting much but after watching u im motivated)
Thanks for sharing your ideal path. I've learnt alot from your videos. BTW, you look a bit thinner than last shot but still in good shape. Keep being a boss of you, bro.
Man I've been drawing and posting everyday for like 10 days now for an art everyday for a month challenge. On top of that college starts in two days. I'm pushing myself to my limits and I STILL know this is the best path to living the life I want to live.
I'm particularly still new as a social media artist and it's been 5 months since i started this in instagram. I can agree with what everything you've said since managing my own time is already challenging and I can't only post my arts regurally, but i have to set up platforms for them to donate, as well as do commissions and selling merchandises. And other than that, posting something other than what you regurally post in instagram does make your follower count decrease (but not too much). They do signed up to see contents we usually post, not something different. I'm not entirely sure if algorithm plays the part, but i believe it should be.
I think being an online artist is quite difficult for like school students when u start out..cause u have exams and a fixed schedule there hence u have to use completely free time for art and sometimes that isn’t enough so yes… This is completely my opinion tho so yea..
I'm also a student with an art Instagram + RUclips channel (def can relate), but personally art soothes the whole exam stress for me so I can fit it in during study breaks. Another point to make is that growth isn't a race, doing tiny bits of efforts over a week (say 30 mins everyday of art account stuff) builds up over 7 days.
@@portraitsbythando4848 I completely agree!..it’s important to dedicate urself even if ur in a tight schedule..it’s extremely admirable..and also highly necessary
This video was helpful! I keep all my art to myself and see sharing on any social media as almost impossible to get into. But hearing you talk about it helped give me some new thoughts about it.
I am curious to know if there is anybody with a full-time job, that has absolutely nothing to do with art (like me), who is a more or less successful Instagram artist on the side. I am far from being an artist yet, I am trying to learn, but it's super hard to find motivation after work and working overtime (most of the days). Apart from that, Sam, you are amazing for managing to do all this and keep yourself on schedule! Thank you for doing this!
12:44 genuinely thought Sam was going to head butt through the screen there lol 😂 but amazing nuggets of wisdom, definitely gives me hope to pursue my art dreams 😊

@@Bunny-xr7cx I would like to tell you but it should not matter as everyone's journey is different, keep doing what you love and have fun :)
This is amazing. Thank you for sharing this. This is exactly what I'm shooting for! See you at the top Sam!
It sure is a blessing to have a day job so you can hold on to more creative freedom in your art. Discipline is a huge part, however, in pulling any of these off.
Great vid, Sam 👍
His voice is pure ASMR
Great summary. It's even harder when doing this with a full-time job! Great insights.
Nice video. Thanks for setting realistic expectations for this space.
DTIYS and fanart = Growth🌟
I look forward to your videos every week💕 makes me motivated every time, thank you Sam!
Sam looks so happy in this video 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺
I love you Sam 🥺
Its really a hard thing to balance a full time job and the social media art business. It feels like I am currently working two fulltime jobs. I know I gotta learn to relax, but its so hard when you feel like it will keep you from fullfilling your dreams
Heyy there i got a kamvas 16 highly inspired by you .. lets see what can i do.. (before watching your videos i didnt even like drawiing or painting much but after watching u im motivated)
your videos constantly give me so much hope and inspiration. thank you sam 🖤
It's like you always know what we need 😌I really needed to hear more about this right now . . . Oh yeah I really needed to hear this
Your voice is so soothingg
been waiting for thisss
that’s it. i’m doin it. thank you, sam!
I'm not entirely sure if algorithm plays the part, but i believe it should be.
bruh your artwork
is amazing!!!
WE ALL NEEDED THIS
I think being an online artist is quite difficult for like school students when u start out..cause u have exams and a fixed schedule there hence u have to use completely free time for art and sometimes that isn’t enough so yes…
This is completely my opinion tho so yea..
True
I'm also a student with an art Instagram + RUclips channel (def can relate), but personally art soothes the whole exam stress for me so I can fit it in during study breaks. Another point to make is that growth isn't a race, doing tiny bits of efforts over a week (say 30 mins everyday of art account stuff) builds up over 7 days.
@@portraitsbythando4848 I completely agree!..it’s important to dedicate urself even if ur in a tight schedule..it’s extremely admirable..and also highly necessary
Love this so much!
This video was helpful! I keep all my art to myself and see sharing on any social media as almost impossible to get into. But hearing you talk about it helped give me some new thoughts about it.
hi pineapple light! good to see you again
This is really helpful @samdoesarts thanks for your insight mate.
I love how he said to us a lil artist babies 💝
This is SO helpful to know!!! I'm gonna be drawing right after this. But honestly my fav part is Sam showing the camera's focus 🤣
Thanks for the video, really needed it. Trying to recover from a major burn out
12:44 genuinely thought Sam was going to head butt through the screen there lol 😂 but amazing nuggets of wisdom, definitely gives me hope to pursue my art dreams 😊
Really enjoyed learning more about this from someone who has actually been through everything. It really is very much appreciated. Will check out the sponsor as well.
Needed this video today. Really insightful! Thank you
I SUPER appreciate your outlook on this - thank you.
I FEEL SO EARLY LETS GOOO cant wait to watch this one, listening to your videos while drawing inspires me so much
Sam is the modern Bob Ross his voice is Soo calming
Wow, I can hear wisdom in your words. I hope to be as humble as you are! Love your art, and I am aspiring to be like you! 👍
