- The Milwaukee Tool Company recently introduced some new items to their Packout line at their 2nd Pipeline in 2020 The Milwaukee Packout Customizable Work Top became available last November, so I decided to order one from The Home Depot and test it out for awhile for this review.
The work top is made of impact resistant polymers and a marine-grade plywood work surface. The top weighs 5.26lbs. It measures 2.0" high, 15.3" deep, and 23.9" wide. To find out more and to see the current price, check out my Home Depot link just below.

I just bought one to secure the contents of my crate, when traveling. A crate & a lid to hold my tools, is all I need for small jobs around the inside of my house, or in the yard or shed. It’s a place to set my tool bag on top of, to keep from crowding my work bench. I looked at your video, for more examples for its uses. Thanks!
I really like the work surface, especially when using the crate. I can see using this for small parts assembly, clamping smaller pieces of wood during woodworking projects, etc. Great video!! Keep em coming!!
Thanks man, will do.
Good show! I found this surface especially useful when I am on a ladder. I can always use mobile table top surface space.
Excellent!
I use mine as a topper for my rolling tool cart in my shop. I use the dolly, drawers, packout vaccum, compact organizers, thin toolbox, then the work surface on top. This gives me a rolling tool cart about 44" high for all my most commonly used tools, with a vaccum built in, that rolls around with me in the shop. The work surface is a nice general purpose top to place anything I need that I may not want on an assembly table or workbench. Good place to put the tracksaw while I setup another cut, coffee, drivers, glue bottles, etc. Can't really place a cup of coffee on top of pack out stuff!
Nice setup! I waited awhile before getting the Packout dolly. It's amazing and something I highly recommend! I need to get that build in vacuum next!
I just came across this as I was looking for a ‘hack’ to be able to attach worktop to crate….. it does fit!!! I’m a dope 😂
Thank you 🙏
Nice formative video. First time to know that I can put a packout item over the crate. Thank you very much.
Glad this was helpful. I use this work top all the time.
I was thinking about building this myself a few years back because Milwaukee didn't have one. Glad they finally made one
I like this work top so much that I now own 2 of them. 🙌
I'm thinking of creating a checkout station for my art fair booth. From the bottom up, it would have a handmade dolly with large total lock casters, 1 Packout mounting plate, 2 Packout two drawer boxes, and 1 Packout tool box. I would buy 3D printed Packout feet and attach them to the underside of a hardwood work surface so it can be mounted on top of the entire stack. Finally, I would wrap three sides of the stack in Sunbrella fabric so it doesn't look to my customers like a pile of toolboxes!
Wow, it sounds like you've really put some thought into this. I hope to try some Packout drawers soon. They're out of stock everywhere right now. Let me know if you ever post pictures of your Packout checkout station. I'm interested to see how it turns out.
@@MarkThomasBuilder I know that this system would be much sturdier than what I currently have, but will it save me any time during setup and breakdown of my booth? That's the big question. Saving time during setup is key. I could avoid the fabric wrap altogether if Milwaukee sold their black EU boxes in the US!
FWIW, my company is a vendor at trade shows, festivals, and conventions. We're not in the tool business. Folks seem to like our Packout. It stands in all of its red glory; it's not uncommon to receive a compliment. Brings our booth a little more down to Earth, IMO. Either way, the Packout is fantastic for doing shows. As for breaking down, the rolling bottom box and a XL box hold all of our product containers and display fixtures. The rest goes into a Large box. Very quick. There's so much space.
That would be a great camping table to seat around while carrying camping stuff with it
Great idea, Luis!
QUESTION OF THE DAY: Would you customize this packout or leave it like it is? If so, what modifications would you make?
Customize. I would use the table top as a pattern and make multiple tops and set up the multiple tops for different set ups. Vice on one, plain surface for writing, secure a soldering station set up on another, make a larger insert top for a larger area that might possibly work with a miter saw and so on. The possibilities could be endless! I would probably make some sort of a seat top as well and use that on top of a packout base case with wheels for ice fishing gear! So many options!!
Attach my pocket hole jig to the work table then attach the table to my organizer containing all my bits and various pocket hole screws.
@@MrGtownjake Great idea!
T track a must have , so many more possibilities
I’d replace the top with aluminum so I could grind metal, drill, cutting, and for other hard use.
That’s a bomb North Stars hat!
Thanks man, I'm a fan of old school hockey.
Good review
Hey, great video. Can you open a packout organiser with the work top on top of it please?
Do you think using metal threaded inserts in the wood would be strong enough for a light duty vice? I plan on having this on top of two drawer modules with a dolly.
Yes, I believe VCG made a video where he added a small vice.
Could I screw a small ryobi miter saw on the top and then use the wall mount and use that to hold up saw on the side of my van
I'm not sure the size of the miter saw, but if it's small enough, then yes. I use this work top all the time. In fact, I bought 2 of them.
Do you think this would be study enough to support a tool box if you screwed it to the bottom of a shelf then snapped the box into it?
It's hard to say without seeing exactly what you're doing, but these Packout items are very sturdy.
Great review, I originally thought I'd pass on this and I saw it as a gimmick, but I think you sold me.
Glad I could help! 👍
Good review. The only detailed one of its kind.
Glad to hear it, thanks!
The bottom side looks Molle compatible...if that's the case ,it has the ability to be used in multiple platforms. I like it.
I'll have to look into that. Sounds interesting.
Just wondering if the 190mm mitre saw would fit on top. Could then use it on top of the boxes as a stand.
I looked it over and don't think it would really work based on the width.
Hi there, do you think the lid is big enough to mount a small dropsaw on top?
It seems like it would fit a small one. I would need to check the dimensions to be sure.
Just customized a system a couple of days ago. Im currently doing a ceramic floor project, and Im tired of cutting on my knees. So I decided I wanted a portable table and figured packout may have something?
This work top is great. I'm probably going to buy a second one.
I am curious if , with the worktop attached to the crate can you still hang the crate from the back , like a wall bracket or the two wheel cart .
Yes, it's flush on the back so it works well on the cart or wall bracket.
@@MarkThomasBuilder thanks so much. I just bought the 2 wheel cart and didnt want to buy the work top if it wouldn't work for my application.
I plan to use the top for my laptop while programming low voltage systems.
Hey Mark it's January 15th at 8:20 a.m. eastern standard time I was just watching TV and I saw you on a commercial on TV for snow Joe snow blowers. Mark's doing commercials now next month you'll be heading to Hollywood. Peace brother
Haha, thanks man! I'm keeping a lookout for that informercial still. It's finally snowing outside today, so maybe I'll see it soon, lol!
Nice review. I am not a tradesman just a home diyer woodworker but I find these pack out boxes expensive for what they are
They're an expensive habit for me, lol. I like the way they all work together and if they help my stay organized, it's worth it. Especially when bringing tools to the job site. I've built homes all over Michigan and there have been times I've forgot some tools at home due to a lack of organization. I often found it cheaper to buy another tool on the road instead of a return trip.
I agree on how pricey they are. However they are also built better than any others IMO. All other set ups are held together with a latch on each side and these have multiple feet/points of contact. They slide together and apart sooo smoothly too! I have issues with having too much stuff and too little space. This set up will help me a lot with all of my crafting and tools! I basically decided that I no longer want a solid shop tool box set up and instead I am slowly investing in these packouts for my set up! When I look at the cost of good tool chests vs these packouts (and I tend to grab and bring whatever project to wherever I plan on going) It started making sense for me and my on the go lifestyle.
They are the best set up in its class but not necessarily for A DIY guy? The reason I say this is because, if you are on construction sites, wheels and plastic materials need to be heavier to withstand Transport. If your just using it for your home projects only, look into the craftsman system. Very good and about a 1/25 of the price of the packout system.
I went with packout because I flip houses and my system needs to be transported from site to site daily.
Can I connect for this Dewalt dust extractor 54v?
I replaced mine with Azek 👍🏼 great video 👍🏼
Interesting idea, thanks for sharing.
I like it but it is hard to find in stock. The pack out system is fantastic and not many mention, it is made in Israel, where quality and durability are superb.
I don't recall seeing this in stock ever at Home Depot. I had to order mine.
2 holes in the middle for the bolts? So much for a writing surface. Milwaukee Couldn't secure it from underneath?
That would be a nice feature. The holes are far enough over to use as a writing surface, but I like your idea better.
@@MarkThomasBuilder the side holes are over enough the 2 in the middle are the issue.
I actually thought about adding wood filler to the holes. I figured if I ever needed to unscrew them, I could probably take a small chisel to get to the screw in order to remove it.
I'd probably glue some high density foam to the plywood, attach a piece of 550 cord to the basket and the lid and attach it to a stand up paddleboard for a fishing container.
Cool, never though of it being used like that.
Hey have you had any problems with your new worx sahsaw/jigsaw i know the first one broke on you.
The second saw is still going strong. I think the first one went out shortly after my oldest son borrowed it to help a friend cut a sunroof in his car, lol.
@@MarkThomasBuilder lol thats good then i was afraid it might be weak but that sounds like a rough job more a place for a grinder.
Excellent review, Cheers from Texas.
Thank you! Cheers!
If someone could modify this to fit a cordless router, film the step-by-step and create some template files (hint hint) that would be sweet. I'm super new to DIY, so that is like a few months away for me. It could then be combined with a workmate bench.
That's a great idea. I'd love to pair it with the M18 router.
Brilliant idea! Even buy a separate one and make it a mini router table! 🙏
Can I use the worktop and then Mount the crate to the wall mount
I don't have the wall mount, but I just looked at the work top and it's flush to the back, so I'm going to say yes it will work.
👍👍👍
Thanks!👏
That crate work top combo ....it looks like a packout router table to me.
I recall seeing a custom build of that setup using this worktop. Maybe Milwaukee will come out with one.
@@MarkThomasBuilder Jakeofall sells a router insert for the crate, but he isn't using the work top. It would be nice to see a Milwaukee version router table packout that integrated with their packout vacuum.
my bad this is good i want 1 to and also a paper shredder for my money and my brain!! you got mail!
When you clicked that top to the crate, I just saw my next step stool.
I think they say it's not rated for a step stool, but I've tried it for that and it works great.
I’d use it to mix cocktail’s and roll some joints.
Haha, I guess that legal, depending where you live.
@@MarkThomasBuilder - just kidding, it does get hard use, I’m replacing mine with aluminum.
Haha, that would be a cool looking upgrade! Will you post pictures of it somewhere?
@@MarkThomasBuilder - I sure will.
Very good info thank you for all this. I m probably buy some Milwaukee Packout , like the XL toolbox and the Crate, but not for tools. But for customized my bed truck ( toyota tacoma offroad) for overland trip ... 👍
The XL toolbox should hold a lot of gear. I haven't bough it yet, but I'm definitely into the crates.
@@MarkThomasBuilder yes I m sure bolts of them , can carry all my recovery gear and my camping gear... when I finish my set up I m gonna put a video on my RUclips, and sent to you , if you want to see .
This would be great in aluminum with the wood insert.
Sounds cool!
Este producto no esta a la venta en México :(
Esta muy bueno para trabajar los cables de RJ45
I hate the screw holes on the top of the work table...couldn't they fill them in??
Yes, I experimented with wood filler and it worked fairly well. I may have to make a quick video on that.
Still waiting for you to put it to the test...
Hi Richard of Puerto Rico 😃😃💯💯💥🇵🇷🇵🇷💥💥💥😃😃🙋♂️🙋♂️
Hello Richard, thanks for stopping by!👋👏
how dumb. after i purchase this oversized milk krate with no lid i am given the great opportunity to buy a lid for 50$!!! wow so keen
Nice top.....using dewalt clamps on Milwaukee is a no no....
Where is the black & red clamps?
Haha, I was waiting for someone to point that out. Those were the only clamps I had handy.🤷♂️
Lol
If I were to get one I'm definitely replacing the plywood with hardwood or aluminum.
Awesome, aluminum sound like an interesting idea.
I figured the aluminum will hold up much better with a bench vise mounted to it.
Aluminum is a great idea!! I have not thought of that and I have Aluminum scrap that would work perfect for it too! I still need to get the worktop though 😆 I will get there! Time and money!
👍🏽🍻🍺👌🏽
👋🍻😁
Pretty nice but $10 for some stealthmount feet and a spare piece of plywood will do the exact same thing.
Thanks for the suggestion. I'm going to pick some up.👍
$50 for a lid......?
Its a nice piece of 1/2" plywood, great for a work top. It's not rated for a step, but actually strong enough in my opinion.
This work surface could be more versatile without the wood top .
over priced plastic
Very constructive criticism. Well done
