it's not SUCH a stupid question. 12 strings do sound different to 6 strings, but not THAT remarkably different. well, I own several 6-strings and a Guild F-512 like the one in the video and I tell you: they really sound THAT different. It just sounds so perfect, you can't help but think it was all part of the plan. The intro to WYWH is so simple, yet so sublime. Almost anyone who can play a guitar can play it....but they can't make it sound like that.
My uncle Johnny use to play this for my brothers and me when we were kids out at the farm house. My inspiration for playing string instruments and Gilmour does it the best.

David Gilmour is my inspiration on playing the 12-string. I play most of my songs in drop down "D" of which he does it like he has magic in his fingers
You get a deeper, richer sound on a 12 string while in drop down D. All you do is drop the base e string until it sounds exactly like the d string or better the D chord
Umm... hes not using drop D tuning. Hes using drop C tuning. His guitar was tuned down a full step which is common for 12 string players. Then his 6th was dropped.. So drop C. Then he tuned the 6th str back up to play "wish you were here".
Wish You Were Here was the song that taught me that I could actually play. I picked it up by ear as a kid and was amazed I could play along with the band. It gave me confidence that even I could do this. That was over 45 years ago. I’m still playing.
I love how he just tunes down three strings, by ear, in about 5 seconds - to make it sound like there are two guitars playing. You can tell he really loves his craft.
@@piotrekkrolikowski344 He only tuned two strings (what would otherwise a single "the low E string" on a 6 string guitar). The guitar is tuned a full step down to D standard tuning, but the thickest string was dropped down a full step to drop C. He grabbed the guitar and it was in Drop C from the last time he had been playing it. Then he tuned the pair of "Low E" strings back to D standard tuning.
Richard I've got to say that it was really incredible to be so close to the instruments that made so much of the music that I love and admire. I even touched a few, that's how close you could get. But you would've laughed when you saw what they felt that the opening bids should be. Everything was incredibly under priced. They had a busted acoustic 6 string that the opening bid was to be $900 to $1500 but I could've told them that someone would pay much much more to own even a busted up guitar from Gilmour. I told my wife I was going to try and bid on it but I think the opening bid on that guitar was $3000. All of his instruments broke all records for an auction. @claptonguitar90 Yes there is. Especially with a 12 string. Unless you like paying a good luthier lots of money to do a neck reset. Over time the wood in the dovetail compresses from tension and the neck angle changes. The only way to fix it is to remove the neck, build up the joint, and put it back together. If the neck uses a glued joint the only way to get it off is to remove the higher frets, drill holes through the fret slots, and steam the joint to loosen the glue.
