  • The Buddhist Teaching on Anatta - Selves & Not-Self: Health Food for the Mind.

Today I'd like to start looking at how we create a sense of self that can lead to long-term welfare and happiness, focusing first on the question of why we would need to do this.
We know that the Buddha often talked about not-self, but he also talked positively about self. He said that the self should be its own mainstay, that it should observe itself and reprimand itself when it's gone astray, and that there's a need to learn not to harm oneself. Here are some passages from the Dhammapada that speak positively of the role of self on the path.
"Your own self is your own mainstay,
for who else could your mainstay be?
    With you yourself well-trained,
you obtain a mainstay hard to obtain."
    - Dhammapada 160
    "Evil is done by oneself.
    By oneself is one defiled.
Evil is left undone by oneself.
    By oneself is one cleansed.
Purity and impurity are one's own doing.
    No one purifies another.
    No other purifies one."
    - Dhammapada 165
    "You yourself should reprove yourself,
    should examine yourself.
As a self-guarded monk with guarded self,
    mindful you dwell at ease."
    - Dhammapada 379
These passages show that a sense of self is an important part of the practice - especially a sense of self that encourages responsibility, heedfulness, and care.

There are two ways for practictioners to share Dharma with others.
Through verbal or by our actions.
When there is affinity we talk to them about the Buddha's Teachings, this is the best.
The other way we use our body, our behavior and our daily lives as a showcase to others .
This is called teaching with form.
How can we teach others with our body?
We show them our healthy body, our bright appearance, looking happy always, enjoying personal and family well-being and have little wisdom.
When people see practitioners enjoying all these attainments, they would ask.
When they ask, this is the opportunity for us to tell them that our attainments come from applying the Buddha's Teachings into our daily lives.
Buddhism has many expedient means to help others to break through delusion and be awakened.
