Van Helsing was my childhood comfort movie and obsession 😂. I remember coming home from Kindergarten with it playing in the living room and was instantly hooked! I proceeded to annoy the hell out of my family for years afterwards as I would watch it at least once every day! It’s now been probably almost a decade since I watched it, but I’m so ecstatic that there are others out there that love it almost as much as I do
Same I was obsessed with it as a kid. We had it on dvd I watched endlessly. When I was like 8 I dressed like van helsing for Halloween. My dad let me use his old ass leather cow boy hat. We also somehow found a trench coat that fit me. Even to this day it’s my favorite movie. People always hated on it. It’s finally getting the love it deserves
I remember how one time I put on my older brother's coat feeling like Van Hellsing and stood at the door in a serious pose watching the street at night
Van Helsing and the first few Underworld movies were the closest thing to a Masterpiece that 12-13 year old me could ever even fathom. I still love Helsing and Underworld.
I actually agree. But the first two or three are really, really good. And Rise of the Lycans is my personal favorite, Romeo and Juliet with Werewolves? Come on.@@falconole8633
One of the things I loved most about this movie was the aesthetic. Those castles in the mountains above a village with the forest's surrounding it is beautiful to me.
I’m not guilty… The League was one of my favorites too. Captain Nemo and Skinner were my favorites but as an adult Dorian Grey and Allan Quatermain are my favorites…
I adore this film, it has so many different themes & lore from vampires, werewolves & Frankenstein. This storyline holds up till this day. I got so hyped when I seen you’re covering this - your videos are so in depth & entertaining. Thank you. ❤️🎥
It started off on a shit foot when Van Helsing had two lithium ion battery powered angle grinders that could cut a perfect circle in floor boards in all of 3 seconds. Even the post powerful Milwaukee 18,000,000 amp batteries we have today couldn’t pull that shit off so quickly.
The best description i have heard of this movie is that "It is the Nickelback of Gothic Action movies". It is a kind of guilty pleasure of mine as im fully aware of how convoluted the overall plot is, but i also love how it takes itself seriously while Hugh Jackman is shooting an automatic crossbow at CGI versions of those three actresses. As a side note, the licensed game that came out for PS2 and Xbox is actually a pretty decent game, it gains extra points cause Hugh Jackman and almost all the original actors redid their roles there.
I am so happy to see that both Van Helsing and the Mummy are from the same guy. I absolutely adore both movies because they were part of my childhood. Most of my friends love both to remembering them as the good old days of great adventure-horror-comedy movies.
Bless you for covering this underrated gem of a movie. Love the clear passion the filmmakers had to give homage to the classic monster movies of the 1930s & ‘40s. I have never met someone under 40 that dislikes the movie. Most people call it a guilty pleasure. But why feel guilty when an entire generation loves it?
This movies is extremely under appreciated especially if you go into just to have fun (like most movies should be) and the skin ripping when turning into a werewolf still freaks me out! Also Frankenstein and Dracula both had unique depictions here which I enjoyed
I've always loved this film, ever since it first came out! I never understood the hate it gets. Especially, as you said, if you're a fan of The Mummy. They're more or less the same kind of movie. Hugh Jackman crushes it as the title character, and I genuinely think this is one of David Wenham's best roles too. He's hilarious as Carl! Kate Beckinsale doesn't offer much than being eye-candy (she's better in the Underworld films - also underrated vamp/werewolf flicks), but I still really like her here too. And Richard Roxburgh is fantastic here - easily, one of my favourite Dracula's. I always felt this movie was playing into the whole over the top silliness at times of the old black and white movies (the "it's alllliiiiive!" style stuff), while also still paying it respect. So if you watch it through that lens, it's so much more entertaining.
My favorite piece of Van Helsing trivia is that Richard Roxburg met his wife on the set of this movie, Silvia Colloca, the vampire with the black hair. Best vampire love story of all time.
I really appreciated the vagueness of Van Helsing's backstory. It really makes you want to learn more about him. Really a smart writing choice that just didn't get the payoff it deserved. I'm still okay with filling in the gaps myself!
I just rewatched this a couple months ago after enjoying as a teen, and I friggin loved it bc it just took itself so seriously. You're like okay, Franky boy, vampires, werewolves, what fun and silly play. But the story and even just the run time showed to take itself seriously and I think it's a bona-fide good movie. And how it betrays common tropes that you think will be there; I absolutely loved Van Helsing handing Dracula a big ol' crucifix, and Dracula screams in pain while holding it as it swiftly melts away in flame, and Dracula continues his monologue. So good
I saw this in the drive-ins and twice in the theater! I LOVED it! I was 16 when it came out and was also a huge fan of The Mummy movies so I will always have a soft spot for it! I actually just watched it with my 8 year old son tonight and he loved it!
Van Helsing and the League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen were two childhood favorites, i do hope they pick VH for a reboot and bring out its potential. Side Note: I have been playing Hunt Showdown recently and it gives me proper VH vibes, hunting mythical beasties.
This movie was for me what Raiders of the Lost Ark was for everyone else. Van Helsing is one of my favorite action adventure films and I'm so sad that it never got a sequel.

I love how over the top all the vampires are in this movie. It's like they have no control over their impulses or emotions. They just hurl themselves totally into whatever they feel like doing in the moment, cackling the whole time. It's great.
This was one of my favorite movies as a kid! I used to watch it all the time with my dad, and I even had the PS2 game for it. So nice to see someone still talking about it, especially in a non-derogatory way!
You bring up such a good point about the mummy and van helsing. I’ve always loved both and never understood how so many people were ONLY down for the mummy.
My family took a trip to Universal Studios around the time this movie was popular and they had this attraction based on the movie and a guy dressed as van helsing outside the attraction who was taking pictures, and as far as I knew, that was hugh jackman and for years I told people i took a photo with Hugh, found the photo a few years back and well…it turns out that it was some random guy and not hugh😞effectively making me a liar😭
I truly did not want this movie to end, I wish we had gotten a series that follows Van Helsing after the events of the film or a prequel explaining his past. They left alot on the table with the Lore. I loved the setting they filmed in, the action and character designs were awesome. For example, what other legendary beasts/characters could Gabriel go up against next, who has he already taken down before this film? The Devil was able to casually transform Dracula into a nealy unstoppable threat to the world, as a former Archangel would Gabriel ever feel the need to go after Satan himself? Where does Frankenstein's monster end up?
I was enjoying the movie so much when I saw it in theaters that I was caught off guard when it ended. I was genuinely expecting to follow Carl & Van Helsing onto their next adventure after the funeral pyre scene ended; I was confused (and then very disappointed) when credits rolled instead of showing what happened to them next.
I was 13 when I first saw this movie. To this day I still say that this movie is one of my favorite movies of all time. This movie is the reason why I love vampires so much. I had such a crush on Dracula. I’m absolutely ok that the woman vampires in this movie were super sexy even when I was teen girl then. This movie got me into gothic horror. This movie also has some steampunk elements to it also. I personally love how they opened with it as black and white which was a great homage to the original universal movies. The masquerade ball scene was the best! This movie had sick music and I loved the ending credits. I could go on. I love everything about it!
Finally someone defending the brides I personally think they were super well done you really got the personalities of each the wild one, the one in charge, and the jealous one, even tho Mariska died super early you still got a sense of who she was, you also had some of the ladys studied bat movements to add into their acting
@@immystery3946 I know right? and they were still villans and were dangerous and got to do shit. Apart from being Dracula's brides they were also their own characters. Nowadays writers and creators seem to shy away from depictions like this because they're scared of being called misogynists. One of the best film adaptations of a Werewolf, regardless of the CGI (which I genuinely liked). When i think of a beast that’ll bring fear upon seeing in real life this is how i would picture it 🙌🏼
This film, Wolfman & Dog Soldiers were my fav as a kid. Wish they’d do more high budget films about werewolves. Had no idea about Ryan Gosling doing a new Wolfman, that’s gonna be so weird 😂. Del Toro did well imo…
My parents bought a portable DVD player to keep me and my brother occupied during long car trips and this movie was a STAPLE of our rotation. Still love it!
What’s funny , two days ago me and my bro were talking about how underrated this movie was/is. I still remember going to the movies to watch this, I was like 8 years old it’s still an amazing movie. Definitely in my top 10 of all time.
If you like these kinds of multiple monster stories, I'd recommend an anime called Undead Murder Farce. It's about a Japanese Immortal and Oni travelling 19th century Europe and solving mysteries with vampires, werewolves and the supernatural. It even has public domain characters like Sherlock Holmes appear!
The Van Helsing tv series is actually really great. The first season is kinda slow but having a Vampirism apocalypse akin to The Walking Dead but with the main character having the ability to cure vampires whenever they consume her blood was a great concept.
For any who like Van Helsing, you should check out Robert E. Howard's character Soloman Kane. Kane you could say was an inspiration for Van Helsing and monster hunters in general. Kane is a Puritan who travels the world fighting demons, vampires, evil humans, saving innocents and the weak. The Del Rey book: The Savage Tales of Solomon Kane has most if not all his stories in one.
i must have been 13 when i watched van helsing. one year prior evanescence dropped "bring me to life" and from that moment on i got into everything gothic, rock, metal, fantasy etc. therefore i loved it. hugh jackman and kate beckinsale were awesome and the whole aesthetic was right up my alley. i watched it so many times but i couldn't tell you anything specific about it today. i should rewatch it. great video, as always. i really appreciate your content.
Came to this video because I just finished watching Van helsing again as I do once a year ever since it came out and wanted to see if other people love it as much as I do. Happy to see you guys here! :)
Van Helsing is a great movie, whoever gets it, gets it. I loved the black and white part, it's a very artistic movie, a person who loves cinema would enjoy it.
I have been watching it since I was a 7 year old. I am 26 now. I have watched it countless times and know every scene, each dialogue and the OST by heart. I will keep watching it till the day I die.
I rewatched this on Halloween, this movie is absolutely insane and I love it. Very excited for the video! I particularly love the way vampires and werewolves are presented in this. It's the gold standard for me.
I like Van Helsing, but I love the first Mummy movie way more. I think what sets it apart is that it just felt more grounded, with better supporting characters and a bigger emphasis on practical sets that don’t need CGI elements all the time. The rhythm is also way better, it takes its time letting the characters go on a journey of exploration before turning everything into huge action set pieces. I’d say Van Helsing is much more like the Mummy Returns… with Sommers going all-in with the big ideas, losing much of the elegance of the previous film. They are still a lot of fun, but the first Mummy I consider to be an actual great adventure movie, worthy of films like The Indiana Jones trilogy (and way better than Indy 4 and 5).
omg, I have been looking for this movie's name ever since i watched it, when i was little , i really love this movie and i thank you for bringing it into light :D
Van Helsing is an underrated Stephen Sommers film and one of his best and one of my favorites along with The Mummy, The Mummy Returns, The Stephen Sommers Jungle Book and Huck Finn
I actually really like the van Helsing take on the Dracula's brides, the sexualization in this case doesn't feel out of place or degradating, fits their characters, Vampires aren't bound to christian morals, they made them weird and playful, I aesthetically enjoyed their clothes, each of them having a signature color is kinda lame but also cool idk, they seem sort of odalisque inspired but each have a different clothing design that could lead to different heritage backgrounds, I find creative the idea of the fabrics morphing into their wings when they turn demonic, as characters they remind me of the succubus on the Castlevania games.
Not only do I love this movie, but I've been loving the content you've been dishing out with your typewriter..glad to be here and may Dra-kula not find you that appealing😂
I just don't understand why this movie didn't do well. It was great. And no, this isn't nostalgia speaking, I've watched it as a kid, as a teenager, as an adult and I love it more each time. It had similar Box Office numbers to Batman Begins and Superman Returns yet only one of these 3 movies was allowed to go on and become greater. I'm willing to bet that had Van Helsing and Superman Returns had gotten their planned sequels, they would have only been better, at least at the Box Office. But oh well.
I absolutely love this movie on these things: Dracula chewing scenery, Werewolves, and Kate Beckinsale. Unsure how a Vampire can be "over-sexualized" since that is a key aspect of the modern (and by modern I mean 1800's and so on) Vampire. I laugh at how bad Universal fumbled the Dark Universe to the point that it was a meme for many years and they decided to bring it back.....just as an area of their upcoming new park (focused/themed on the classic monsters) rather than a cinematic universe.
I have autism, so I hyper fixated on this movie as a kid. Like I wrote so much fan fiction about it as a kid and teenager. I absolutely unironically love this movie and wish more people did
My best friend's grandparents had this film, and whenever we were staying over at their place, we'd watch it. I'm still a fan of this film, (I'm absolutely in love with this Dracula adaptation) but watching this review made me really think about how insanely packed this film is. There's just too much going on, leaving nothing with a "finished" polish it could have been. But I wouldn't change it. I love this campy, oversexualized mix of my favorite monsters in a film. I think no matter the faults, it'll always be a special piece of media to me.
Easily one of my all time favourite movies ever. I think I rewatched this close to a good 100 times at least growing up. I remember seeing it in theaters haha. The vampires and werewolves were a huge inspiration for one of my series of stories that also had zombies and First Nation God's. I love this movie
I still watch it from time to time. I’ve always loved it. Btw, it’s Van Helsing’s own rule that he will not kill a creature that isn’t evil. The order actually orders him to kill frankenstein’s monster
Oh I was obsessed with this movie as a kid. I had the figures. The toy crossbow and his hand spinning blades. I still watch this movie from time to time, really wish it had gotten a sequel
This is still a favorite Movie of mine that I can watch over and over ! Own several copies on DVD and Blu Ray. And it also kills me every time I hear you saying “Vulcan” instead of “Velkan” ! 😂
For someone who was barely 8 years old when I first saw this movie, this was the greatest movie I've seen during that time. It wasn't even scary to my young mind, despite how creepy some of the monsters and scenes were. Truly underrated gem that needs to be talked about more
remade? it's already an homage to Universal monster movies, and they have already been tried to be revived without much success (the Mummy with tom Cruise). You do know it's based on characters from Dracula and a few other stories, right? Dracula is one of the most 'remade' stories of all time
I remember the film not showing Dracula in his vampire form until near the end of the movie. Also Van Helsing was mentioned in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen movie, another film I hrew up with and was surprised it wasn't well-liked.
I was in college when this movie came out. My roommate (super nerdy like me) saw it with her boyfriend and said it was great up until Kate beckinsale died. When I later saw it on video I agree with her. I honestly think it would have done better if she would have lived. Edit; I don’t think the vampire brides were over sexualized lol. They are vampires! I do wish Kate beckinsale hadn’t been over sexualized in the costume department. Would have been nice if she didn’t wear such skin tight pants, as a counterpoint to the brides.
This is the movie that helped get me into classic monsters as a kid. Love this movie! But even without the nostalgia filter, I still enjoy it. Cool monster designs and an awesome score.
I ABSOLUTELY adore this movie, and just now, thanks to you, learned what th RT score is...where critics high or something? This movie es everythin 13 year old me wanted, and 20 years later, I still love it.
Second thing regarding the van Helsing on Syfy channel that ran for I think five seasons, that’s actually based off of a comic book by the same name where it follows Vanessa Helsing just like in the TV show now the TV show went in a different direction than the comic, the Van Helsing comic is from Zenos scope publishing.
Honestly this movie is my favorite version of vampires, especially female vampires. The wives seem more like fairies which I mean ....fairies are quite evil just pretty too. And ofc it always makes since why vampires are always sexualized, just the act of vampires needing to suck blood from another is quite intimate. Both male and female vampires were shown in this film to be closely tied to sexuality. I think in the reboot they should keep it but make it obvious that it's from both confidence and their way to lure in others. It's a balancing act for sure.
This is one of my favorite movies that my dad really liked too! I remember watching it with him when I was a kid. I always thought the werewolves design were super cool! They reminded me of the Werewolves from Skyrim
Van helsing is glorious camp. It was always the DVD I reached for whenever I needed some action and a good time. I'm 100% part of the cult following of this movie.

Not to be that guy, but you know the show is unrelated to this movie, right?
@@X525Crossfire yea I know but he mentioned he had never heard of it before so wanted to give this undeservingly overlooked series some praise.
Van Helsing was one of the first movies that got into myths, legends, and their lore
I always enjoyed crossovers between characters. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was also a banger.
Same actor was the villian great 2 films
TTT, you're my new fav RUclipsr! I enjoy listening to your opinions about movies/series, it makes me feel positively nostalgic! :D
This and league of extraordinary gentlemen are a classic for me.
I love this movie, it came out at the perfect time for me.
Great video, I'm with you on everything except for the frame at 10:27. LOL!
This movie still has my absolute favorite werewolves from anything. I love the designs and movements.
The tie-in animated movie short/prequel The London Assignment is worth anyones time
I loved that one
omg, I have been looking for this movie's name ever since i watched it, when i was little , i really love this movie and i thank you for bringing it into light :D
this movie was a blast, great video
Van Helsing is an underrated Stephen Sommers film and one of his best and one of my favorites along with The Mummy, The Mummy Returns, The Stephen Sommers Jungle Book and Huck Finn
I love this movie. Best werewolf design to date
So glad you brought this up I used to watch this as a kid bro and I remember it was a GAME TO IF YOU HAD AND XBOX 360 great times man…
I've been meaning to watch this one again lately. I haven't seen it since I was a kid and its been floating around the streamers.
I'm one of those people who also loves this movie. As well as The Mummy which is my fav movie of all time. Great vid!
My favourite film as a child! I love the gothic genre, especially involving vampires. I’m excited to see what you’ve got for us 🎉
I actually really like the van Helsing take on the Dracula's brides, the sexualization in this case doesn't feel out of place or degradating, fits their characters, Vampires aren't bound to christian morals, they made them weird and playful, I aesthetically enjoyed their clothes, each of them having a signature color is kinda lame but also cool idk, they seem sort of odalisque inspired but each have a different clothing design that could lead to different heritage backgrounds, I find creative the idea of the fabrics morphing into their wings when they turn demonic, as characters they remind me of the succubus on the Castlevania games.
Not only do I love this movie, but I've been loving the content you've been dishing out with your typewriter..glad to be here and may Dra-kula not find you that appealing😂
Definitely remember watching this as a kid, but I remember absolutely LOVING the PS2 game!
Im glad Im not the only one who was obsessed with this movie as a kid. I watched it every friday night
When I got out of a relationship this was the first movie I saw. It was a great pallet cleanser. Big time guilty pleasure film.
I have autism, so I hyper fixated on this movie as a kid. Like I wrote so much fan fiction about it as a kid and teenager. I absolutely unironically love this movie and wish more people did
I didn't forget this classic. I loved this movie back in the day. The game was great too. It was DMC rip off but it was so fun.
I’ve watched this movie countless times. One of my favorite movies during Halloween
Oh I was obsessed with this movie as a kid. I had the figures. The toy crossbow and his hand spinning blades.
I still watch this movie from time to time, really wish it had gotten a sequel
I love Van Helsing, it was a good mix of fantasy and unintentional camp lol
I would love this movie for David Wenham's character alone, but he's surrounded by great tongue-in-cheek performances.
Truly underrated gem that needs to be talked about more
Van helsing needs to be remade. Its one of those movies that deserves a second chance at life.
remade? it's already an homage to Universal monster movies, and they have already been tried to be revived without much success (the Mummy with tom Cruise). You do know it's based on characters from Dracula and a few other stories, right? Dracula is one of the most 'remade' stories of all time
love this movie. Thanks for putting your appreciation out there on youtube and giving this movie some must needed shine.
It had the coolest Werewolf designs.
My dad bought me the van helsing Halloween outfit with the spinning blades and I wore it almost DAILY. Hidden gem of a film
I woulda loved to see a comic continuation. The concept & design of this movie is so much fun & unique. And what a cool look for Van Helsing
I’m telling this for last 20 years. Van Helsing has BEST werewolfs
Being that goth kid when van helsing came out I love this movie. Haven't watched it in about 20 years though, need to give it a rewatch
I ABSOLUTELY adore this movie, and just now, thanks to you, learned what th RT score is...where critics high or something? This movie es everythin 13 year old me wanted, and 20 years later, I still love it.
Loved this movie!
'Serana' 🤣🤣🤣 nice one, my friend. Nice one
Great movie! Watched it again recently and still awesome!
Van helsing is glorious camp. It was always the DVD I reached for whenever I needed some action and a good time. I'm 100% part of the cult following of this movie.
I remember having a lot of fun seeing this in the cinema.
This movie had and will always have the best werewolves of all time! Straight up!
