This and "different for girls" are bloody masterpieces. I remember when they came out. So very long ago. It's true what they say. "The past is a foreign country. They do things differently there!". Times were bloody hard. Massive unemployment and the UK was on it's arse! But what time for creativity! So very glad i was there to see it. Live it. Of course, we didn't know it at the time, but looking back, as Dickens so eloquently put it. "They were the worst of times. They were the best of times". And they were.
I’m from a soul & reggae background. But in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s I really liked Joe Jackson. He sings with real soul. New wave pop music but sung with soul and with a punk attitude. Greatly talented!! 👌🏽
Look Sharp and I’m The Man Joe’s first two albums in 1978 and 79 are to this day absolute gold! This guy was a radio favorite and to this high school Senior back then a soundtrack to cruising around, parties and just hanging with friends…Great times, beautiful memories and still listening today!! Man, he’s got some great songs…
My mom dragged to a concert of him, at my 17th Birthday even. I did it as a favour to her as she wanted to go with her then-boyfriend initially, but they broke up before. So, I agreed to go with her, because I really felt so sorry for her. long story short. I have never been on a better concert even though this is not my typical kind of music. This was one of the bangers played at this concert. In the end, it was a really joyful birthday ngl and I will hopefully remember it til I die.
Sally Anne Williamson was my dream girl until this Italian Dude turned up with a Tr6 in 1976, 48 years later I’m the prize. Life has a funny way of working out.
Joe opened the doors for bands like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Police, Stray Cats. The sound and producing is identical. At first I didn’t really think much of Joe and his band but he grew on me.
I'm 17 and wondering what the hell Paula (the light of my life) sees in that out of work layabout goon who leaves her with the other lasses while he drinks and plays pool all night (with her money) and is always cheating on her, yet still she takes him back. Forty-odd years, a wife and three kids later of my own and I still sometimes wonder what happened to her.
I remember seeing vague memories of the top of the pops episodes from the 70s like this at 4 or 5 years old this performances rings a bell and got to see it in 2014 BBC 4
I remember the first time I heard it on the radio....huge hit...I'll never stop diggn it. And if I say so myself...lol my band never sounds better than when we do it
I happened upon this record at the record store when it first came out. Took it home and played it over and over. Love the music. Joe and his band are awesome!!!
Great stuff: a totally pared-back treatment that allows the strength of the material to show through. Some songs just don't need any fancy licks or choruses of backing vocals. This is one of them. But why oh why did TOTP always have to cut songs off before they'd finished properly? There's a really neat play-out on this one with a sudden end that catches you by surprise. Should have been left in.
At least You Tube, and the rest of social media have proved one thing...The world was better off back then, without it! But now, it's an evil obsession that few can break.
I love this song! But I didn't actually see any videos with Joe Jackson until years after I first heard it. For some reason, I pictured someone who looked like actor Paul Sand, whose speaking voice is similar to Joe Jackson's singing voice here.
On next week's episode of The Denise Show our guests will Denise's friend who works with her at the movie theater and a guy who sold her some pants at Marshall's.
Tonight's the night when I go to all the parties down my street I wash my hair and I kid myself I look real smooth Look over there (where?) There, here comes Jeanie with her new boyfriend They say that looks don't count for much If so, there goes your proof
If this got released today it would still be a hit. Timeless track.
It would get band for the first line 😂
Never gets old. 2024 and still hittin
This dude is ridiculously underrated!
Rhe music is brilliant too!!
His overrated trash
Yes. I literally just discovered him through a generation x Facebook page and wondering how my blind-spot could have been so large for so long.
💯 ridiculously!
Here's the obligatory "underrated" comment.
Joe Jackson's song perfectly captures the anger and frustration of unrequited love...
this song has aged very well. It still sounds just as good as it did on its first release.

I love this one. The lyrics are hilarious. Great music.

Released in 1979, but I think it is the beginning of the quintessential guitar rift that would define the lite rock sound of the 80's:
When I first heard it I thought it was Elvis Costello.

Stands up today as it did when it was written.Bloody brilliant.
Its nice to see a bass as the leading instrument.
We so need these golden-oldies, just what the World needs right now.
Amen 👍👍
So good this has chasing around my head since I woke up 👏👏👏
Somehow I got this song stuck in my head from a memory. So I had to come and listen to it in the raw. Just a great song and it hits home.
Killer tune, killer drums
Crazy...I always thought this song was from the nineties, just has that sound. Great song, classic
right?!..😄.
Well there was a cover by ska band Goldfinger in 1998. Maybe that's the song you heard
@@tiadaid regardless of the cover, the song itself still sounds like it's from the 90s
They cut it off at the end!!😡
Still remember singing out this song after being denied…used to scream this song out loud!!!
So cathartic
Thanks Joe

I was 13 when I first heard this. At 54, its even better.

I'm in 9th grade again and watchin Elizabeth with her new boyfriend...my heart still hurts!
I'm in 6th Grade Watching Susan With One Of My Best Friends, Talk About a Heart-Breaker!!!

I have lived this. But Joe asked Mary Lee's Corvette from New York to support him on a UK tour 30+ years ago. Thanks Joe; I found my home there.
" Him" is me.
Love that song the drummer dave Houghton brought me up from the age of eight so went on many tours with them, lovely memories ❤❤❤❤❤
I always loved Joe Jackson...
Happy 70th Birthday Joe!!!🥳🎂🎁🎈🎊💞🎉💞🎊💞🎉💞
He shares the same birthday as me ❤
@@WisdomKeeper11 Happy Birthday, @WisdomKeeper11!!!🥳🎂🎁🎈🎊🎉🎊🎉

An original that is true. His songs were different, which today would be refreshing.
One of the greatest songs of the 80’s and therefore one of the best of all time.
Class Act Joe Jackson...Loved him then...still love him today! We need more of our class acts...today music is so lame
Oct 1 2020 and I love this song as much as I did when it came out
Same here!
And here!
2023 ❤️
@@markmorris8532 thank you for the reminder! ❤
One of the great opening lines for a song.
I remember seeing vague memories of the top of the pops episodes from the 70s like this at 4 or 5 years old this performances rings a bell and got to see it in 2014 BBC 4

Never get musicians three times hotter than you. Cuts everything short. Couldn’t take my eyes off...THEM!
I happened upon this record at the record store when it first came out. Took it home and played it over and over. Love the music. Joe and his band are awesome!!!
I saw him in concert at the beginning of his career....he was great!
Liked his stuff at the time. Still love it now. Even read the autobiog. Real classy bloke. Never saw him perform, shame that.
Great musician and songwriter, From 1979 (Look Sharp) until 1986 (Big World), he released a string of great albums; Night and Day was my favorite one.
Yes and Stepping out was brilliant
I wore this album out. Where has he been? One of the greatest songwriters ever!
I overlooked his later stuff too, but check it out, songs like "Hit Single" from his 90s "Laughter and Lust" album rediscover the same sound.
Great Great song. Class of 84.
I remember seeing him in 1980 in Dover NJ at the showplace he was awesome then n still is 👍
Love the closeups on the bass players lovely white Fender Precision. 🤩
Look Sharp, Joe!
First heard this when it came out and it's still one of my favorites from Joe Jackson
Awesome Pop!
Brilliant song!
OMG he's gorgeous here😍
Legend
Brilliant song, needs a dance remix 2024! UK 🇬🇧
Man, I really loved this song when I first heard it years ago (Has it really been that long?! lol). Like a fine wine it's just gotten better with age.
I love older music; I listen to it as I draw and this is a classic!

So underrated yet Sugar Ray covered this song because they knew this guy was the business!
Look over there, WHERE! It's badass Joe Jackson.
This song has a kind of Elvis Costello vibe
All-time classic!

Such a great song
Great song memories
I play this song in the biker bar I go to all the time. I haven't been told not to play it yet. Love this song.
A great call and response song....I have seen footage of how he performs this in concert
On next week's episode of The Denise Show our guests will Denise's friend who works with her at the movie theater and a guy who sold her some pants at Marshall's.
Yes
this song is an anthem for angst!
The bass definitely carries this song.
QUÉ HERMOSA CANCIÓN DE MI ÉPOCA
Classic under-rated tune
Great quality upload. Thanks for this ! I love this version from ToTP.

Awesome early video. So young but so cool.
This cat was cool as he'll
Music students, observe the Paragon!
His first two albums, yes, but don’t overlook Night and Day and Jumping Jive
Great Song!
The opening of this song matches a lot of situations today, now more than ever.
Definitely .
Class..
either this video is out of sync, or he can not lip sync. Either way, this is a timeless hit.
Anybody know what kind of guitar Gary is playing there?
So underrated
Sounds like late 90s/early 2000s pop punk American bands
Tonight's the night when I go to all the parties down my street
I wash my hair and I kid myself I look real smooth
Look over there (where?)
There, here comes Jeanie with her new boyfriend
They say that looks don't count for much
If so, there goes your proof
Did this song inspire “Steady as she goes” by the Raconteurs ??? It’s oddly similar
A powerhouse of nerds ☺☺☺
