molly's question hit me in the chest, man! i had my first heartbreak back in summer 2016 and it was so tough to get through. now i'm with someone new but the thought of "if we were to ever break up... " creeps into my head every once in a while, and it really makes me think about how gut-wrenchingly ugly and painful the first time was. like, SIS DO I EVEN HAVE THE ENERGY TO GO THRU ANOTHER BREAKUP, EVER? UGH lol

  • @anniebanana3698
    @anniebanana3698 6 лет назад +44

Wow that question from Molly I believe, was really interesting - thinking about how hard a break up would be while in the midst of a relationship. I feel like this is something that is almost implicit within the way that relationships are these days, where it can sometimes seem like there are so many options for both guys and girls to just choose someone new all the time - with social media in our face ALL the time, there is an ongoing stream of attractive and oftentimes available people out there and there are a ton of ways to connect with new people also... anyway, just thought that was a really interesting question because at first I didn't really understand it but then when I thought about it a bit more, I could kind of almost relate to it.

I’d love to see an entire video on the subject of helping someone you care about with Mental Health. My mum is struggling at the moment and has all the ‘proper help’ in place such as the Mental Health Team etc, but I feel very lost when it comes to what todo to help her. I have taken over the role of caregiver for my 5 siblings, the house and her and still it seems nothing helps. So any advice/tips and just generally hearing your experience would be amazing 🙂 I really really enjoyed this video! Girl Talk is one of my favourites that you do

    • @sophismpress
      @sophismpress 6 лет назад +4

The biggest thing you need to do is look after yourself. Your Mum is going through her issues and it's not your job to 'fix' her (or anybody). This is her journey. It sounds like you're doing so much looking after the other children and the house. It would be wonderful if you could get some support as in a psychologist to talk to. It's very important as they'll be able to be there for you and give you strategies to cope and to look after yourself. Gentle hug to you.

Dear Sammi, I can't even describe how helpful this video is at the moment for me! I am currently going through some difficulties in my relationship and as I sat down and opened my feed your video popped up and I would like to sincerely thank you for answering all of the questions! I am already feeling so much better and your advice has kind of pulled all my messy and anxious thoughts together. Anyways, thank you for being so amazing and relatable, love you lots! xx

or you can just be adults... I have two best friends and one of them is dating the others ex. the first friend and her bf broke up like 4 years ago, because they were just teens and first loves almost never work out and it's not like one of them is a bad person, sometimes a relationship just doesn't work out. now 4 years later he and her best friend fell in love (which is not something you can help) they are both such different people and much more mature than they were back when he and the first girlfriend were dating and they have a much better relationship than when he and his ex were a couple. of course it was a little bit weird for his ex at first, but at some point she figured, why not just be happy that two people she's cared for have found each other. and its not like she wanted to be with him, that's why he's an ex in the first place. and now we are all just a happy group, who dont care about the past.

I love watching these videos. You are so honest and sincere and you give us some good pieces of advice !
That video is surely part of my favorites from you.
Every relationship works differently but there certainly are some things and tips which tend to concern a lot of people at the same time ! I wish this video was published sooner, it would have been really helpful after my first breakup last year, after a really long relationship. I felt really bad and lost a lot of confidence in myself. I felt like I would never be able to be in a relationship again. A few months ago I met a guy, and somehow felt that he suits me a lot more than my first boyfriend did. I was scared to jump into this new relationship because I did not know if it would work, but I told myself not to worry and to enjoy the days with him as they come !
I am glad you made that video, it will help a lot of persons.
I cannot wait to watch the new podcast you will film with Jason.
Sorry for my english. My vocabulary and grammar are not perfect 😋

This video was exceptionally good. Your advice for all the questions you received were spot on and advice I would say to others as well. Time plays a massive part in relationships - before, after and during and I don't think sometimes people realise that. I think there is this mad rush to get to a stage which is the epitome / perfectness of a relationship - but that really doesn't exist and all relationships (even happy on the outside) aren't always perfect - and no couple should aim for perfection. Accepting things the way they are and learning to love yourself and giving yourself time and space to embrace and enjoy the moment is the most important thing in relationships (friendships as well and with partners) and see how everyday pans out - fear stops everything and being scared about things is kinda pointless - you have one life - you have to live it. Learn from experience, follow your heart and go with a flow. Relationships are difficult in any instance - embrace what you have and enjoy it while it lasts.
Great video Sam as always - I rarely comment, but this video speaks volumes to me and I think you're fab. Mel xxx

I have been with my partner for nearly a year now (feels so much longer!) and I suffer from a general anxiety disorder, depression, and borderline personality disorder. He is so supportive and kind to me, even when I can't explain how I'm feeling or why. He is also the first person in my life (friend or partner) to actually look up my disorders on a mental health website in order to understand more, motivate me and help me. He is so amazing and it has helped me to see that people in the past were not there for me in the way I needed. I guess I thought I didn't deserve it so I thought nothing of it, but in comparison, he is incredible.
Don't accept less than you need or deserve. (especially stupid people who tell you "it's all in your head" and "you're not even trying to help yourself" *cough cough* ex bf)
    Love you! 💗

  • @wildestaring

This is for the person in their first relationship scared of breaking up:
I felt exactly the same way in my first relationship and the advice my friend gave me which ended up helping was that if you do break up, you will be in a completely different place and probably won't be able to see yourself with that person anymore (which might be unimaginable now but can happen) OR they would have done something horrible and even though you're still in love with them, you can accept not being with them. E.g I was madly in love with my first boyfriend and we stayed together for 2 years, but by the time we broke up, I was sad yes but it also didn't feel right to be together anymore.
The bottom line is, you will never break up with the both of you in the exact same mindset as you are at the moment, because there is nothing wrong right now. It's extremely rare for there be a reason for two people who are perfectly happy together to have to break up, so if it does happen, it will be easier than what you're anticipating! Hope this helps :) xx

To the girl who was struggling with self confidence at the end of her relationship bc of verbal abuse from her partner:
Consider counseling as an option to recovering from the emotional fallout, especially if your struggle with self confidence affects your daily life. Your experiences are likely very different from mine, but my ex partner's put downs and verbal abuse led me to believe that I was incapable of doing just about anything. Eventually it bled out of my private life into my work life, and it took a lot of support from my friends and therapist to recover a positive self image. New life experiences were also instrumental in proving to myself that I was capable of things! But I recognize that therapy helped me to recognize those experiences as growth and evidence of self worth.

My husband and I consider ourselves soul mates! I am his 4th wife and he is my second husband! I believe there is that special person out there for you but you live your life for you. You may have to go through other relationships to find your soul mate, and we both did! Live your life but not build a live around that someone you are waiting for! When you do find that person, you can still be you with the life that you made for yourself and now sharing your life with someone! Being your own person means you don't lose yourself in your relationship. Together but apart, sounds strange. It just means that you can share your life and yourself but never lose yourself. It means you do things alone without that person, but it gives you the space to be you. Makes you appreciate your mate and your life altogether!

An answer to the girl who asked a question about a big girl being with a skinny guy:
I'm obese and my boyfriend is skinny. We met through Tinder, have been together for over a year and live together. Before I met him I had never felt truly comfortable being naked in front of people (not even my mom). It all changed when I met him. Honestly, he doesn't care about the extra weight, and he never comments on my huge thighs, stomach, my outfits or the way I eat. I believe that most guys do not care about extra weight - it comes down to chemistry and personality. Obviously - my boyfriend wants me to be healthy, and he knows that I want to lose weight so he is super supportive. Do not overthink and most importantly - do not make up your opinion based on what you THINK other people think of you. A lot of people spend too much time thinking of what people MIGHT think of them.

The last point was so good! Your partner can be attracted to someone, but at the end there is a reason why he is with you. There will be always someone who looks better is smarter etc etc., but nobody is like you.

Honestly every question on here hit me and made me feel. I've suffered with mental health for so long. I don't feel good enough for my boyfriend. I'm CONSTANTLY worrying he is gonna find someone better or break my heart. At my lowest my best friend was dating someone I was seeing and genuinely liked, she kept it secret and I worked with both of them. What a love triangle. I was so depressed and constantly felt awkward and like it was my fault.
Not to wish it on anyone but it's almost a relief to know it's not all in my head. Definitly my fav type of video, just like chilling with a friend! X

Just gonna echo that if you had a podcast I would basically devote my life to listening to it, heh. Also, I'd love to see a girl talk video that is specifically about relationships/life after being in an unhealthy/abusive relationships. I've watched you since I was in high school (I'm graduating from college now, so it's been a while!) and eventually I was in an abusive relationship that was, as you can understand, pretty awful, and your videos helped me so much. Knowing that somebody had a shared experience and found love and a safe relationship afterwards was so important to me and my healing process! Seeing you come back so strong after something so hard has meant so much to me, and I know that unfortunately I'm not the only one who has been in this kind of relationship, so I think it may be really nice for others to see someone talking about the topic! However I totally understand that trauma can be really challenging to talk about, so no pressure at all! Love you Sammi! Xx

Related so much to that second question, I broke up with my boyfriend of nearly 3 years (was with him from the age of 15) for similar reasons, I felt like everyone's criteria for a good relationship was that you make each other happy and he did make me happy when we were together in person but we didn't see each other that often and when we weren't together I barely even thought about him because he was crap at messaging me and never wanted to call, it's been a few months now and when I see him I feel like I'm still not over him but I don't really miss him anymore and I'm going to uni this year so I know we would not have lasted, loved this video❤️❤️

love this video!! you give really helpful, sensitive and realistic advice. i want to suggest you rethinking the title ‘Girl Talk.’ I totally feel the sentiment, although I feel it plays into the gender binary which you obviously are working to speak out against in your advice (especially the body insecurity question). Men and women both have problems in relationships and your title plays into the stereotype of women focusing and obsessing over relationships where men are more aloof. Hope my thoughts aren’t unwarranted, you’re totally my fave youtuber!!
Also, I am also podcast obsessed as you are and I wanted to recommend the podcast, ‘Guys We F**ked.’ Two female comedian out of NY discussing life, relationships, etc. SO GOOD i’m obsessed and the girls are hilarious!

I was in the same place as you were. 22-years-old, never had a boyfriend really, and my first kiss wasn't even really until I was in high school. I'd get hit on, but same thing, it was about sex and I wasn't about that. Nor was I even ready. I felt really behind and as though I'd be alone forever. Then I met someone in college at 23, started dating and at 28 I am married, and actually on my honeymoon right now. Never feel ashamed of your age and the point in your life. 22 is young, despite what people act about it and whether you should be with someone or not. Everyone is different and a relationship will never make you more happy. Everything happens when you're ready. Just sit back and enjoy the ride 😊

I think social media has warped more so societal pressures regarding relationships. I’ve never felt conventional, but I worry for the happiness of others who only try to please appearances instead of pleasing themselves.
The question about “a bigger girl dating a smaller man”..... Sam please answer this shit more succinctly and more real! I don’t think you spoke truth enough.

Generally I think with time you realize that falling in love and being in a relationship are two separate things,
because being in love is easy but staying in love takes effort to put it this way.
Falling in love is mistaken with physical attraction, that's well known.
Keeping a relationship alive is about making the other one more important
than yourself, in a sense of values of course, not literally.
But things have changed so much, being informed all the time comes with a
freedom that makes it harder to choose what to do, even in the context of finding
someone to be with. We're witnessing other peoples experiences,
their struggles, getting married, having kids and so on and you find yourself
in a place of being overwhelmed, even a bit anxious.
The main problem here is the fact that things are very predictable now.
Both women and men are sensitive about their independence, nobody wants to get out of their
comfort zone, the sacrificial ideology of love is not the central theme
of if anymore. Now to be positive you need to have a reason to be positive.
I'm not sure if this is constructive or not though.

I can really relate to Emily's question, I've been through something very similar recently too, where I broke with my boyfriend of 3.5 years. I went through a period of wondering if I had made the right decision, but have remembered the reason why I wanted to break up. I'm feeling a lot better now, but it is tough.

"BIN MAN!" I love this video so much Sam, I keep re-watching it when I need a motivational pick-up. I love that you said it, "If someone is just not a good person, well those two people will find each other... I would just get on with my life." It is now almost two years since my partner of four years left me for someone else and I am now very ready to date again! A year really isn't very long at all. You are so wise. xo

You know Sam, I think like you that there is always the good and the bad in life and that's why I'm asking myself, if a relationship can even be a constant good thing in a person's life.
