50mm has been my favorite focal length. Only since I started only using 50mm for years. I had about 5 50mm lenses ranging from 1.4-1.8. Once I got the 1.2 GM I was just astounded with how amazing it is. Especially for portraits around nature. It just pops perfectly.
Great review as always Pav, I own one of these with an A7RIV and wide open outside it’s capable of absolutely gorgeous images with wonderful subject separation with lots of detail. Stopped down in the studio you just get even more fine detail, an absolute masterpiece from Sony.
Thank you for an excellent review! I have way too many "fast fifty" lenses; but I've never regretted that. It's my favourite focal length. I now have the Sony GM 50mm f1.2, too- and it seldom leaves my A7 IV. What a combination! The focus acquisition is phenomenal- to say the least. I think it's a marriage made in heaven...
I share your enthusiasm for this work of art! It’s not been in my rotation for a while but I’m excited to use it again lol Very nice of Sony to lend you a copy.
@@PavSZ It is an excellent lens and the quality of image I can get out of it is exceptional. I can confidently say that it is the only 50 I will ever purchase. It is very expensive, and for some it will be worth it. In hindsight I’m not certain if I would of purchased it as I find myself mostly using a 24-70 as I hate changing lenses when I’m filming.
Better than Lumix S Pro f1.4? Would love to see you do a shootout and comparison between this Sony 50 f1.2GM on your A7 IV vs the Lumix S Pro 50 f1.4 on your Lumix S5.
I had reviewed Lumix 50mm f1.4 in the past and in my opinion is not that great. It's lacking something and it is huge and heavy. I rate Sigma 50mm f1.4 higher than Lumix lens - sorry to say it
I have both. The GM has better bokeh but the Lumix Pro is sharper and has way better colors IMHO. A lot of people reported fogging inside their 50mm S Pro though, maybe it is why Pav and some reviewers didn't liked this lens. Fogging affects contrast and sharpness ...
I am really interested into this lens to complement 16-35 gm for that ultra bokeh and filming outside at night. Though 50mm is really not good to film inside Btw i love sony bokeh it looks very magical. Recently filmed random "forest witch" kinf of video with my fam members and it bokeh looks so mystical Though I would probably want 85mm f1.2 more if it existed because I like to "correct" focal lengrh when its 50 or 35 thus zoom is nicer for me in focal length 16-70
Check out the Voightlander 50mm f1.2 ASPH VM, it is better imo to the Leica. There are several autofocus adapters for M lenses. The Voightlander has the better bokeh compared to all of these lenses, the reason people buy fast lenses
@@curtisp471 I'm sure it is amazing but bokeh and how it looks is subjective. I also dared to say that this is the best 50mm ever because of it's auto ficus preformance
Being loaned the lens is the same as being paid to review the lens. While I have this lens, and I absolutely love it, You invalidate your review because technically you were paid to review it. They loaned you the lens to create content to get paid. If the lens was bad, and you reviewed it as bad, they wouldn't send you anymore gear to review. So while I have this lens, and I am looking for tips and tricks, when you say that in the beginning, it makes me not value anything you say, as you are being technically paid to promote it.
this is simply not true. I have no contract that I have to say anything specific and I always have agreement that I will be honest. Brands prefer for reviewers to be honest if there are problems with their products. You are saying this under a review of a perfect lens though, did you expect something negative about it? By the way, I have bought it 3 days after finishing this video and I'm still using it on daily basis
Bigger too. That's why Nikon's is even bigger. You can't ignore physics. Sony pioneered mirrorless on the principle that excellent image quality could be in a small portable package and they are trying to stick to that mandate. I appreciate it and to offset the unavoidable focus breathing in the smaller and lighter lenses they are adding focus breathing compensation in future cameras to help account for it. I love all the brands, and think it's great we have choices based on our preferences as to what's the _best_ fit for us as photographers.
@@subutai8392 focus breathing compensation comes at 1.5x crop 🤦🏻♂️🤣🤣, enjoy your pseudo-full-frame look and FF related advantages once you activate that “compensation” feature. 24mm look becomes 36mm. Sounds like a FF to Crop low key sensor converter lol.
@@PavSZ For the price, there are several 50s that are just better. There’s nothing like the unique 50 1.8S for Nikon Z, especially for the price. Nothing. Sony struggles to offer such quality at the same price range. Also, this infatuation with 1.2 is entirely over-hyped.

Same here!! I think I have 6 50mm. I've just ordered this one this week. I'm getting it next week. Very excited
It’s not only a review, it gives me good ideas use 50 mm lens for portrait photography. Definitely good video, like it 👍
Thank you!

Great video pav! Samples look amazing my dude
Thanks man!
I own this lens. I watched the video to help me feel better about spending 2k on it.
and how do you feel about it now?
I am buying it this month

haha yeah that's why I watched videos about the RF 50 1.2 - same story.
I own this lens too. I felt bad after watching someone's video comparing it with the cheaper version the f1.8. Now I feel good again 🤣

What a lens. Great review as always. ✌️ Greetings from Greece.
Thanks! 👍
Amazing review
thank you!
Great video Pav!
thank you!!
Good pictures!
Thanks!
Great review. Loved the way you were convincing yourself to drop all that cash 😂
someone had to convince myself 😉
It's really good I must say it is so fast
the best
I have it! Fantastique!
me too!!! the best lens ever made
Sony vs sigma 50mm who is basi in bajet...?
there is no Sigma 50mm f1.2
Man I want this lens so bad haha. Looks so great.
I know!!! I just ordered mine. I had to sell one of my kidneys to buy it

@@lauriewahlig2819 wow didn't knew that it would be awesome
50mm is totally usable to film in inside ... more than 85mm for sure
Why is it not good inside? I was going to use it on my FX6 for studio interviews but this has wrecked my plans 🥲
Would love to see it alongside the Leica Noctilux 50mm f1.2 modern version in terms of rendering, the sony definitely destroys it in sharpness
and in auto focus performance

Leica noctilux 50mm 1.2 is the best i think
Maybe but it is just a manual lens.
This not only delivers very similar results but you get 99 out of 100 shots perfectly sharp at f1.2
Canon’s RF version is better, less focus breathing.
can I use it on Sony camera? I don't have Canon one 😉
