I love that ominous first shot of Lorne. “It’s a demon! He looks angry. Is this a big bad?”
And then he sings. It’s soo Buffyverse, self-parody even, and sets up so much of the tone and themes in a single moment.

@@r0w5tortion84 Yup. When Whedon subverts expectations, it always seems to have a point, to make the audience think. And not just to be "surprising" or because someone guessed the twist on Reddit.

@@TheYasmineFlower It's because Whedon et al are extremely talented storytellers. When they play around with cliches and tropes it's to make a point, it's self-aware. That's what makes these series so great to me. Like the introduction of Gunn and Wesley, the whole clash of cultures is overplayed now but it only serves to make the impact more profound when we see how their relationship grows and deepens. Wesley especially is a character that grows through cliches.
It's that deeper story beyond the surface that's glaringly lacking from the c-grade Whedon wannabes that seem to make entertainment today.

Meh, that’s what they were going for, but Lorne doesn’t look nearly intimidating enough to pull off the subversion. It would’ve been cool if they’d given him a super-creepy, intimidating look only to find out he’s got the biggest heart in the Buffyverse.

You know how sometimes in a show or movie, there's one character who's so colorful, so original or charming or clever, played by someone so talented or charismatic, that they just light up the screen whenever they're on it, and make even bad scenes, episodes, or stories better by their presence? For me, in Buffy, that was Spike. On Angel, its Lorne.

    Ahh yes, Andy Hallett
The story of how he got into the show just because Whedon saw him doing fantastic karaoke always gets to me. That one DVD commentary with the comparison between his and Alexis Denisof's acting chops, where Alexis has a _lot_ of formal training while Andy holds his own during his *first job*. The memories of Mark Lutz (the Groosalugg) on that tribute comic written by John frickin' Byrne , where he remembers his best friend and the day they met while in costume (back when Groo was going to be a blue-skinned demon), and how they mocked the "lowly humans" that passed by. That one video floating around youtube where Amy Acker talks about him fondly while in tears, or the one where he himself remembers his antics with a rented schoolbus when he was 13. He was taken from us far too soon, but he and his most well-known character, Krevlorneswath from the Deathwok clan, managed to make an impact on lots of people, in ways that most couldn't even dream of with a lifetime of opportunity.

I so rate season 2 of Angel, though its split into two separate halves, both are fantastic. Of all the episodes, are you now or have you ever been is my favourite Angel episode, it is engine that propels Angel forward. A great review by the way (as always).

Hi - I just wanted to let you know that i absolutely love your video essays! They are so well-written and well- thought out, and the editing is absolutely superb. I love buffy, but never really thought about the depths of characterization and philosophy that was written into these episodes. Your videos have taught me so much, a few of them have actually made me cry, and have actually inspired me in my writing. I don't comment much, but I just wanted to let you know how much your videos are appreciated.

Unfortunately by the time I got into Angel: The Series, Andy Hallett had already passed away. I was extremely saddened to learn that, as from his very first appearance, Lorne was by far my favorite character of the Buffyverse, rivaled only by Spike. I always felt like he, and the show, are hideously underappreciated. I honestly wasn't sure if anyone would recognize me the first time I cosplayed him at a convention.
But almost immediately, Buffy and Angel fans were popping up everywhere. And then something really beautiful began to happen. Other fans started sharing stories with me about Andy Hallett. People who had been lucky enough to have met him shared with me stories of how kind he was. That he was always so warm and welcoming to fans, always happy to meet them and take pictures with them.
A woman who had the chance to meet him not long before he passed shared her story about his last appearance at a convention. We teared up together as she spoke of just how excited he was to meet the fans and that he tried to talk for a little bit with every person who came to see him. She said she shared a wonderful conversation with him just about little things how she will always remember that.
Lorne has since become a regular cosplay of mine at several West Coast conventions and every time, I meet wonderful people who are full of love and memories of this wonderful actor and fantastic character. I never got to meet him but in small ways I feel like I get to know him just a little from all the stories other fans have shared.
Really looking forward to the rest of the guide!

The Barry Manilow and Chopin tie-in gave me goosebumps. I just love how the writers don't feel the need to go "look at what we did, how good we are" they just respect our intelligence, and trust us to find these things if we care enough. Amazing.

For the comments toward the end of the video. It could be the reality of release. So this episode came out months after the end of the first season. Before the era of streaming you had limited options to get caught up. So this episode restates things as a refresher and a way to bring in new viewers. Here are the characters, who they are, and where we might be going. Additionally we a shown a world that isn't black and white. LA has it's mix of good/bad demons/humans and it's own society. It's a quick rundown of season 1 without the growing pains.
Most importantly I think it's an opener that doesn't require knowledge of Buffy(helps) but you can get the gist of folks like Darla.

Lorne might be my favorite fictional character of all time. Just as season 1 is painful to watch because of the tragedy that befell Glenn Quinn, pretty much all of the rest of the run of Angel has plenty of sorrow to go along with the joy. RIP Andy Hallett. What a talent.

Well the whole keeping score bit actually makes sense as a season 2 opener - since you can see they've ended up making a scoreboard of sorts and that would have had an effect on Angel as well, and he began potentially thinking 'we are almost there' and it's less about helping people, and suddenly about adding another tag on the completed objective.
It's a reopener of Angel's eyes that he sees that he became blinded by the potential reward, and forgot about what the job was all about - saving lives and souls.

One thing to remember is that, when Angel season 2 started, DVDs were a thing, but they and their players were expensive, and Blockbuster didn't rent them yet. Also, when you consider how much Angel season 1 changed it's goals from the original idea of a procedural, I think it makes a certain amount of sense for this episode to kind of restate things.

I know it might be a bit late, but the B roll behind the cast is color coded, which adds a lot more depth to the opening:
Gunn - Orange: humor, energy, balance, warmth, enthusiasm, vibrant, expansive, flamboyant
Angel - Blue: faith, spirituality, contentment, loyalty, fulfillment peace, tranquility, calm, stability, harmony, unity, trust, truth, confidence, conservatism, security, cleanliness, order, sky, water, cold, technology, depression
Cordelia - Green: healing, soothing, perseverance, tenacity, self-awareness, proud, unchanging nature, environment, healthy, good luck, renewal, youth, vigor, spring, generosity, fertility, jealousy, inexperience, envy
Wesley - Yellow: wisdom, knowledge, relaxation, joy, happiness, optimism, idealism, imagination, hope, sunshine, summer, dishonesty, cowardice, betrayal, jealousy, covetousness, deceit, illness, hazard
Not sure if anyone has mentioned it.
A lot of good directors use colors in this way to emphasize certain aspects of the characters main traits, and while not everything in that list is valid, I thought it was a neat thing to point out.
