Fred is like a more adorable and useful River. But I'm measuring it by Joss's apparent insistence to recreate the same character on 'expiration', this one being the waif-like innocent looking, bizarre girl who seems to be not all there, but is secretly so much more, we had with River, Fred, Drucilla, Willow and maybe some minor one-offs, or botched attempts (like Topher or Actives/Dolls) I might be forgetting. But the future, almost world destroyer, went the quickest and farthest from the initial stereotype retaining only speech pattern and some increasingly rare odd turn of phrase for a while
Winifred “Fred” Burkle is a unique combo between Willow’s waif intellect and Anya’s awkwardness but it works. Amy Acker is an impressive character actress.
I remember the first time I was binging this series and met Fred in the alternate dimension and I was SO hyped when I saw in the next season she was a series regular
@Joseph Brown • Seeing Amy here makes you understand how she could play Root in Person of Interest. I wonder if she could ever do a normal Mom role? 😉😊
Dang it. Appreciate the video and it was fun, but the ONE line I love of hers most of all is when Cordelia becomes Queen of Pylea and Fred responds with "....That didn't happen that way for me..." :)
Amy Acker as Fred was cute and a lot of fun to watch, despite how dorky and quirky she is she was cute. I was so sad for what happened to her before she became Illyria when she died.
This is what most taints the 'Buffverse' for me upon considering a re-watch (more than Joss's negative rl influence applied retro-actively) that they CHOSE to take THIS amazing character away from us and in return give us back a cold distance (still played masterfully tho) under the guise of The Team needing another character with 'powers' on their side in their fight. Fred always wielded more 'powers' than any supernatural character on that show because she had a giant functional intellect, was quick witted and all but was almost always first a good human. Removing that was a tragic mis-step for the series miring down Angel to a joyless shuffling off to death that's hard to watch.
when talking about amy acker's best roles, root from poi usually comes up, but fred totally deserves more attention, she's adorable and amy's acting is incredible
Amy Acker is great overall, but Root is like... one of her if not the only like... long long recurring/major role (as in the number of episodes - and the impact of her character in POI is astronomical - sorry I'm a diehard fan for POI haahhaha). But thank god people watch THINGS because POI threads led me to add lists of to-watch for Amy Acker specifically.
I always thought Willow was reading Fred wrong when she said she's seeing someone. Fred was just really excited to talk to someone on her wavelength. They'd have made a cute couple, though.
Agreed, take everything that Amy did as Fred. Now change her character and she is a Demon that kills evil beings left and right. Who else could pull it off?
Okay... oh my god? *laughs uncomfortably* I couldn't love this more, makes me totally fangirl as a 52 yo guy that's not quite as much of a nerd as that seemes to indicate. Heh. But yeah great job as this is a letter perfect display of Fred's awesomeness. It also explains better than I could why 'Winifred Burkle' is the only acceptable answer to this: "If you could chose one person, real or fictional, to be by your side when the ish was truly going down, who would it be?" Not only would Fred figue out how to save your asses, afterward she'd stick around and help you deal with the blowback/consequnces of what just went down. 'Cause THAT is what a true friend would do and that's what Fred would do.
Joss Whedon does this thing (maybe lots of fiction does). Amidst a bunch of characters one will be fun, nice, unassuming, the one everyone likes, the silly one who isn't wound up intense and angry. Then after a long time he'll pull the trigger and the thing will happen. Amy Acker was great in this, amazing in Dollhouse, and Gifted too. Probably other stuff I haven't seen. Being skinny and cute probably also helps. An accent that isn't offensive is defintely a plus.
Yeah. She's also great in Person of Interest. Root is great. Never actually watched her episodes in Alias, but from the clips I saw she was great there too.
She was a physics major. I think she might have had a part-time job at the library she got pylea'd in, but I could be remembering that from a fan work rather than something official.
@@ChristmasPterodactyl I remember when they came to save her (and she ended up saving them as Fred would tend to do) she had scrawled many walls of her cave(s) with equations so yeah she was a brilliant scientific/mathematic mind at her core, no matter her profession, yeah?
Fred is adorable, but I want opinions. What caused the downfall of Angel Investigations, Ms Burkle staying on as a member, or Angel being unappologetically myopic to his team's feelings in S02 and earlier on when Faith came to L.A? These events caused a Rube Goldberg worthy chains of effects, both obvious and, at first sight, not that apparent, that led to their eventual demise
Spike, even in his redemptive story-arc best, doesn't deserve to sniff Fred to be honest so the only relationship she should/would have with him would be one of pity as a fellow tourtured soul not a romatic kindred.
I might have shipped them, but Fred romances always cost too much death, suffering and pain in the background, while something sweet, bright and new blossoms again and again, and again
she was like a little kid. noticing the way whedon characterized and infantilized adult Women seems creepier the older I become. illyria ruled but fred was just cringey up til season 5.
