  • Popping fingers is a nasty habit of many people. Loved by many, hated by many. Check to find how cracking bones is affecting your joints.
The most common myth is that cracking your fingers will cause arthritis. Most medical publications indicate that this is NOT true:
Let’s get a hand on this: Review of the clinical anatomy of “knuckle cracking” pubmed.ncbi.nl...
The consequences of habitual knuckle cracking pubmed.ncbi.nl...
Clinical Inquiry: Does knuckle popping lead to arthritis? pubmed.ncbi.nl...
Effect of habitual knuckle cracking on hand function pubmed.ncbi.nl...
There is much more, these are only examples.

I’ve been cracking the bone that is the 2nd closest knuckle I think to the finger tip and my fingers have started to bent

    totally true!

So if cracking sound is shockwave caused by collapsing of cavitation bubble then maybe... it could be used to detect joint anomalies? Abnormal synovial fluid chemical composition that affects viscosity / vapour pressure should give different cracking pitch.
I'll record cracking of all my joints, wait till I'm old and crack again to compare sounds. Be right back in 40 years... :)

      Very interesting idea :)
however, I think it will never be realized for several reasons:
      - firstly, we do not know exactly whether the amount of synovial fluid affects the cracking sound intensity level. Logic shows that it should have. The following problem then arises: the synovial membrane is of different sizes in different joints, moreover, it is individually variable in each of us. The amount of synovial fluid is therefore slightly different for each of us, even within the same healthy joint. It would be hard to standardize this data.
      - Secondly, the ability to pull back the articular surfaces is also different for each of us and depends on many factors such as the level of muscle tension, fascia, the level of joint capsule tension, ligaments, tendons and many others. This may explain why it is easy to induce cracking sound in some Patients and a bit more difficult in others.
      - Third, as I mention in the movie, this mechanism is still not fully proven. And although it is often taken for granted on the Internet, there are researchers who question these assumptions. For example, it is hypothesized that cracking sound does not arise during an implosion, but during the formation of gas bubbles. And as we know, further research should always be based on things previously fully proven.
Of course you can perform biochemical analysis and check the synovial fluid chemical composition (which surely changes when the joint becomes inflamed), but this is a study done with a needle and a microscope, not with the ear :) At least for now :)
But if you do your case study please let me know, I would love to read it :)

Yes, there will be a lot of joint manipulation videos on my channel, mainly of the spine.
I'll let you know in this comment when they appear
