this is good man! And what just hit me, is that even the synth solo sounds completely Adam Jones :) it's just the way he would play it on guitar as well/ Very well done!
@@adamp2056 Literally can't tell at this point since we don't have live performances, yet. But Adam plays synth as well and Danny is busy playing the drums :D
The main riff is the best use of implied metric modulation I have ever heard. Danny is playing a 12/8 shuffle treating the dotted 8th note as a quarter note for the first half of the riff, making the song sound 50% slower. Then the snare hit in the second measure snaps the pulse into the "correct" tempo. 2 tempos at the same time. Tool never ceases to amaze.
Also nuts: at measure 96, Adam is playing as if the phrase is 7/4 - 5/8 - 7/4 and the downbeat is a quarter note earlier, but Danny is still playing it as 7/4 - 7/4 - 5/8 using the original downbeat. So the song not only has 2 simultaneous tempos, it has 2 simultaneous downbeats.
I'm glad the chorus at 257 was changed to the D-string variant with ghost notes, I couldn't play it the way you tabbed it to save my life. No time to change chords!
Assume the 23 people who voted thumbs down on this were people who immediately smashed their guitars after seeing this video, knowing they would never achieve this level of awesomeness!
I've always loved Tool and like to mess around covering their songs ... This is another level. I closed my eyes and it's soo close that I really don't think I'd know the difference. That riff - you know the one I mean - the one that makes yell, "Do it!" While you're driving down the road... Anyhow, now I can play it whenever I want thanks to such a complete cover. Very well done. Subscribed.
Holy shit, dude! Amazing job! It's clear how much you've studied Tool and Adam Jones's playing because you played that shit flawlessly! Looking forward to the 7empest cover! It's my other favorite song from Fear Inoculum next to this one. 🤘
@@MaxNiessl Definitely agree with that lol. That song has a lot of riffs and it's super long. If anyone on here can pull it off, it's you. I watched someone else's cover and I think you can do better. Especially because you have the tone and techniques nailed down
I think you thought about that and for some reason decided to do it another way, but as a suggestion: in 49th beat (1:58) you can play C not on the G-string, but on high-D-string, a chord would be like 8 and 10 trets on the A and high-D strings.
You're totally right, I forgot to add it in the description. At first I tabbed it out wrong, with the D _always_ as the root note. Then I noticed it's the F. Left the high note on the G string. I still think it's more comfortable to play for me, but you're right :)
Magnificent Max! I have seen many versions of pneuma and I must admit your version stands out as close to the original. I must also give you a thumbs on this video because you have a nice setup and a nice follow on the tabs. Thank you very much for making this possible.

So sweet waking up to comments like yours :) I've been playing guitar for about 10 years now (started at 11) and my first guitar teacher introduced me to Tool with Vicarious and Lateralus. Immediately got hooked, but listened only sporadically until I was like 15. Then the obsession began, as I bought their albums one after the other. Honestly man... You're my idol. You're like Adam Jones, the RUclipsr. Thank you for making all of TOOL's work sound so damn good, AND making it accessible for all of us.
Thank you, Taylor! Accessibility is very important to me, everyone should be able to learn! Awesome, that you're enjoying my content :)
Absolutely incredible! Nice playing. Thought this was going to take longer than a weekend.
Thank you! :)
I've got to say, your play along videos are absolutely spectacular. Tool is hands down my favorite band to play, and these videos make it way easier to get those tricky parts down.
Thank you very much! 🤘🏼
Me: Hi, what's the tempo for Pneuma?
Tool: Yes.
???
There’s no tempo changes at all
@@fuggledugglegaming Theres multiple if you watch the video.
I laughed so hard reading this looool
It was recorded without click
Nothing tops tool’s music and nothing tops this cover
How does this guy only have 2800 subs?!?! It should be 28 million!! Absolutely great work you are doing Max, keep it up.
Thanks man, I truly appreciate it :)
Funny, I think seeing the sheet music gives me a greater appreciation for the complexity of tool more than just listening alone.
That's great man! It was so breathtaking to analyse this song. Many weird things happening that are all playing together so well :)
7:31 sounds like Schism's guitar part in the middle
278 could be Adam doing pinch harmonics. solid cover again! you never fail to give us the best tool tablature on the internet. wicked stuff, mate.
this is good man!
And what just hit me, is that even the synth solo sounds completely Adam Jones :) it's just the way he would play it on guitar as well/
Very well done!
Yes, I love the synth on this track! And thank you :)
Is is Adam or Dany playing the synth? Usually at live shows its Dany or maynard playing them.
@@adamp2056 Literally can't tell at this point since we don't have live performances, yet. But Adam plays synth as well and Danny is busy playing the drums :D
Discovering this song has been life changing. I can’t get enough of it. The whole song is incredible but man that outro is so mean!
Even after 3 years of playing this song on guitar I still come back to this video to re-learn it.. best tutorial on RUclips!
Thank you so much, Jason! Glad you still enjoy the video 🤘🏼
flawless playthrough! excellent sound and appreciate the tabs
Thank you! :)
I'm glad the chorus at 257 was changed to the D-string variant with ghost notes, I couldn't play it the way you tabbed it to save my life. No time to change chords!
I just fell in love with this song recently and I am so proud of you right now, perfection! Thank you! Keep it up. :*
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed :*
Nailed it again Max. That first heavy riff is so Undertow and that ending solo is great but unusual for Jones. What a track.
Thank you! Yes, it's amazing. So different, yet so much Tool :)
Subscribed.
Thank you, truly appreciate it! Great I could help you learn the song :)
Holy shit, dude! Amazing job! It's clear how much you've studied Tool and Adam Jones's playing because you played that shit flawlessly! Looking forward to the 7empest cover! It's my other favorite song from Fear Inoculum next to this one. 🤘
Thank you! 7empest will be so hard to play (and remember), but I love that song :D
@@MaxNiessl Definitely agree with that lol. That song has a lot of riffs and it's super long. If anyone on here can pull it off, it's you. I watched someone else's cover and I think you can do better. Especially because you have the tone and techniques nailed down
@@DJENTISNTNOTAGENRE I'll try my best. I urge you to check out Cameron Winter's cover of 7empest, he's the man! :)
@@MaxNiessl Good call! I watched another guy's cover and it wasn't nearly as good as the one you suggested. That dude nailed it just like you will! 🔥
Dude, absolutely incredible work. I really appreciate your taking the time to tab all this out for us to enjoy.
Thanks, dude! Glad you liked it and find it helpful :)
Hey dude,
You play awesome. Adam Jones is not easy to play. Great job! I can't wait to see you cover 7empest.
Hey, thank you! :)
If i would listen to the end and the original track i won’t hear the difference! Great job!!
Impressive! Most impressive. How did you get this down so quickly?
Thank you! :) I pulled an extra night shift for this last night :D
Tool is all 0,2,3,5,7,8,10,12
Just gotta study the hell out of it to feel the timing, nuances, and changeovers
@@Jaikanatar I thought it was 1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21 😉 spiral out
@Basement GAS Clever. Lol
@@BasementGAS I can't speak for Maynard lol
YES! to the chills when that growly tone comes in the mid section. I thought I was the only one....
My favorite one too. Very well done sir.
Thanks! :)
I still think it's more comfortable to play for me, but you're right :)
best song on the new album in my opinion, played very well!
I agree and thank you :)
Magnificent Max! I have seen many versions of pneuma and I must admit your version stands out as close to the original.
I must also give you a thumbs on this video because you have a nice setup and a nice follow on the tabs. Thank you very much for making this possible.
You are very welcome! Thank you! The updated tabs can be found on my website for free :)
Seriously man, amazing channel! I can't imagine the amount of work it takes to record and sync, edit even one video. Sounds great too.
I'm totally addicted to the new album it's a masterpiece.
I think I'm a fairly good player when it comes to rock and blues. Somehow Tool tracks I shy away from because I just can't count the time signatures. This has inspired me to have a go, I'll probably just have to feel my way through but I just have a feeling 'I have to learn this!'
Keep up the good work, I saw tool in Amsterdam in July and a perfect circle twice in London last 2 years. Can't get enough!
Great content thanks ! 😃
Thank you so much! Really glad my videos motivate you, keep going :)
Just started this tonight, that rhythm in the verse with the delay is messing with me 😅 I can play it and it sounds good but I can't quite nail the rhythm.... Yet
Been looking all over for decent tabs for this. What a fucking great album this is. Also have to say this is incredibly well put together. Thanks for your services mate.
Goddamn that riff at 9:23 -- some serious vicarious vibes
Hell yeah! \m/
Seeing this performed live is incredible. With the short amount of time to learn these parts this is beyond epic!
Thank you! :)
Dude...this is so good. Thank you for this :)
Glad you enjoyed, man! Thank you :)
Gawwwd dang that was NOICE! Well done my friend!!
Perfect as always
this is by far one of my favourite tool songs I'm learning the song at this moment in time on the guitar I am also learning the keyboard part as well this song is fantastic and thank you for getting this video together big thumbs up
Fantastic!
Im speechless at how amazingly awesome a job you've done on this track, so many little changes, you must have a great memory. A great song too, just shows what you can do with basically 2 or 3 progressions played by superb musos.
Thank you! Amazing song :)
Did you buy that synth specifically to do Tool covers???
PS - beautiful cover and accurate tabs, thanks!
Thanks, man! :) No, I actually use that MIDI controller for programming drums and some synth parts. Haven't found a way to use it in a video, though, until now :)
FYI: I disputed Invincible and it seems to be up again :)
@@MaxNiessl - Well done for standing your ground. - What do you think about the use of dual guitar lines in this album? To my memory that hasn't been as prominent before (apart from disposition, obviously).
@@JackChurchill101 Yes, I thought that to myself as well. I think it leaves a lot of room to solo over which is a good thing. Hard to pull of live, though...
@@MaxNiessl - yes, that's always the issue with dual tracks. Hopefully they'll work it out well.
All the best.
@@JackChurchill101 they usuallu will get a guest guitarist if required. King buzzo has been on stage many times with tool. Most of the time the layered guitars are just helping Justin fill in over Adams solos.
This is my favourite song of the album, has been since I saw them live Feb 2020, I really envy you being able to play this.
thats insane
Very good Job Max. I just noticed a very very small delay on a part but it's better than I can do myself. Thanks to you I just learned that I forgot few keys at 9:03.
Absolutely incredible talent.
You can probably play percussion too 😎😎
If I ever manage to get to play through the full song its thanks to you! Amazing Job, Amazing quality and even though its one of the easier songs of the record still extremely impressive to put that out 1 day after release! So impressive.
Thank you so much! Happy learning and have fun playing \m/
YES!
Brother, that was Absolutely Amazing! Thank u for the inspiration to now go learn this myself. You’ve just changed one Aussie’s trajectory....something that u’ll never know the value of, but thank u.
Awesome, man! Have fun 🤘
Took Adam 13 years to write this. Took this dude 1 day to master. Props.
Thank you! :)
Perfect, so far I have not seen any guitar cover here on youtube like yours! It would be wonderful to see some old tool songs too ... My most sincere congratulations !!!
Thank you! Will most certainly do that :)
Perfect 👌
Learning this requires a solid memory lol but damn right im gonna learn the whole thing by heart!!
Edit: Forgot to mention how great of a job you did in the vid, well all of your new tool vids. You’re the man!
Thank you so much man! Have fun learning :)
The body of your guitar is gorgeous.
My favourite from the album, great playing, thanks for sharing.
Now listen here, I am (probably as everyone around here) a gigantic Tool fan and I've been waiting for the exact moment for the album to come out. As I listened it, I fell in love with all the songs, but with this one, the most. I typed in to see are there any covers yet and to be honest, a very pleasant surprise waited for me! You, my brother, are so underrated, you deserve a million times more subscribers than this, you have an enormous talent which everyone should appreciate! Well done on covering the song, I personally think it's the hardest one to play on the album. How long did it take you to learn it and how long have you been playing overall? I've been playing guitar for 2 years, and about a year ago I learned all the songs from Lateralus and 10,000 days. But this one looks so hard because of the time signatures, but I will sure do my best to try and learn it. Once more, thanks for this video and all the other ones you make, much love and respect!!!
Holy shit, dude, thank you so much for your kind words! They are my constant source of peacefulness and happiness in this world :)
Pneuma took me friday evening to tab it out, synced a click to it at Saturday morning and recorded from 1 PM to 9 PM to get that perfect take. Was a bit ill that day so I've gone through many bad takes and stages of disappointment xD It's still my favourite so! :)
So keep at it bro, awesome to see people learning Tool songs in 2019 and appreciating their amazing masterpieces! Spiral out, keep going... :)
All the best for you brother ❤
🥲
Don't know what I like more, the covers or the intros
Haha thanks! Sorry to disappoint, but those are just stock footage :(
@@MaxNiessl ah, not disappointed at all. I love what you do woth the text and color inversions. Awesome. And the cover is just 👌👌, the tone as well

Dont fool us.you are Adam Jones😊😁😁
This is my favourite from the album...incredible work! Now I will be spending hours getting my Mark V to sound like this...
Haha thanks man and have fun :)
Well looks like tool unknowingly found there back up guitar player.
