Alright you all, here we go! But first of all... isn't she a beauty? I know people are picky when it comes to songs like Lateralus, so I put my sources in the description. I reference them in the tab text like e.g. "[1] 0:50 (text that explains it)", so you can be the judge what's in the source video. Hope you all enjoy, spiral out! :)
@@baluchon2505 It definitely feels and sounds better in real life. But the tone I'm recording has only changed subtlely. It's much better intonated, though :)
@@MaxNiessl Nice, thank you for the feedback. I'm also playing on an Epiphone that my girl gave me in 2015. I've wanted a Gibson for a while, and I really like your new Gibson. Can't wait to see which TOOL song you'll do next.
Alejandro, I used to be one of those who critiqued incorrect tabs on the internet a few months ago because I wanted to play exactly like my favorite artist. Since watching another favorite Chanel of mine, Axe of Creation, I have changed my perspective. A tab that is different from the original does a couple of unique things. 1. It forces you to use your ears to fill in the gaps if you wish to do so and thereby improves your skill. 2. It allows you to add your own flavor. A small step in creativity without having the music theory knowledge to do a full composition on your own.
Absolutely perfect transcription. These videos are beyond well-made. You are gonna grow rapidly if you keep this kind of quality up. Please though, do some more Opeth stuff
As a bass player by hobby and major Tool fan, I naturally tune into what Justin is doing all the time. It is fascinating to hear the guitar part more isolated and hearing all the little things Adam Jones does. More importantly, your playing skill, tab transcription, and tone are all just incredible. Always a joy to see a new Max Niessi Tool upload.
Amazing stuff man, I can't wait to tackle this monster. Great idea putting the pedals on screen as well during the video to show when the effects stop/start. Thanks for your hard work on these!
Ah yes, perhaps my favorite Tool song, not just because it's good, but because of the message and how it impacted me when I was learning about the song for the first time. Man, I discovered your channel today, and you already are my fav guitar player from youtube, a very skilled guy who deserves more views and recognition! Cheers from Brazil, keep up the good job
for the “weird picking” thing, you could use the harmonics on the 3rd fret for the high e, b, and g strings. that’s what i usually do when i play lateralus. i really like this cover tho! keep it up 👍
These tabs are just perfect, you are one of my favourite guitar RUclipsrs One question. How does the intro riff is noteded in 6/8 ??? I only can hear it in 4/4
On Thanksgiving when we engaged our tradition of declaring for what we were thankful, "Max Niessl" was the first thing that flew out of my mouth. You are THE MAN. Perhaps UNDERTOW next? Max, you absolute legend. That's pretty similar to how I play the song, but I kinda had to figure it out by myself too. Honestly it's so satisfying to see a correct tab for once. Lost count of how many tabs just straight-up butcher the main riff in ways that don't even make sense. Plus, your guitar tone is immaculate. Great job man :)

Don't take this as a negative -I know you're very good at this, - but I preferred your Epiphone tone for Tool songs - this Gibson sounds like it's got "too much" balls - which I know is odd for a Tool song. It's definitely thicker and "bigger" sounding, but almost too much, with your other set up. Maybe the bass or the gain is naturally higher? - It will work wonders for meatier-riff bands like Mastodon and In Flames though. (But yes, she's a beauty - I have a LP Studio myself). In any case, it's a great rendition, and you nailed those essential harmonics for the outro (they always catch me out at least once!) Plus the tab is brilliantly displayed for those who haven't learned this yet.
Thanks for you feedback, bud! I may have to adjust the sound a bit for the Gibson. I boosted a lot of stuff for the Epi which I maybe don't need for the Gibson. Glad you like the video! :)
I can’t imagine all the time you put into doing this. It’s one thing to learn a song note for note but to then transcribe it as well for a yt channel. I’ve watched your other videos and you’re as accurate as it gets. Great work. Nice upgrade, surprised you didn’t opt for the AJ sig given your mastery of tool. Tone is killer.
Really late comment so fine if I don't get a response; how do the harmonics at the end work (like how do you differentiate between an A harmonic and a D when in the video you seem to do the same motions)? I've been looking for a while now on the technique of the ending harmonics because they are the only part oof this song which is preventing me from learning the whole thing and as your tone seemed to perfectly match the actual recording, I was wondering if you had any advice on how to do them. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Of course I respond! :) I have to preface this by saying that I do artificial harmonics in a weird way. The “correct” way is to use the edge of your thumb, but I use my ring finger. Depending on where you are placing the edge of the thumb (or in my case the ring finger) you’ll get a different sound. It’s really about feel, though, and it will be different for every guitar size. So to practice this, try placing your hand on different spots on the string. Hope that helps a bit! Take care :)
Love your covers bro!!! I would love to know what your settings are to get that tone, I can't for the life of me get it crunchy enough and to me sounds to 'fat', especially when I try to play songs like "Jambi" and those pull-throughs don't sound right. Again great job bro!!
Thank you! I guess the best results come from a lightly boosted distortion with a lot of mids. Marshall amps or the famous Diezel VH4 do a great job with Adam’s sound :)
Hi Max, nice job as always, and congrats on the Gibson, she looks sweet! :) On a side note, I decided to return the Kemper and have ordered the Quad Cortex instead. I'll let you know how it is once I receive it and have had some time with it.

AH is Artificial Harmonic, and there are many different kinds. In this case, these are pinch harmonics. There are plenty of great tutorials on RUclips on how to do them if you don't know already. The key to this part is to make sure to pinch harmonic is at the correct spot on the string. The closer to the bridge you pinch harmonic, the higher the note, and vise versa. When there's a harmonic (which are the notes with these signs around them ) with another harmonic on the end (in parenthesis), thats the note you aiming to make when you pinch harmonic. Your gonna have to play around with the string position to get the right sound, you could go off where's he doing them though.
