  • How to: Initialize, reset or reprogram a 2015-20 F-150's-350's Vista Sunroof
    NOTE: If your sunroof is broken or making a popping/snapping noise, THIS WON'T FIX IT.
    It's likely your guide arms are broken, and you should watch the video below, do that repair, and THEN come back to this one.
    If yours is stuck open, this MIGHT get it closed, but the odds aren't great. This is for reprogramming the motor after a repair, or after maybe a battery change or just a glitch.
    This also works on the same year F-250's and 350's. It also reprograms the shade as well.
    Here is a link to my repair video for these new Vista Roofs

    Ford Service Manual..
    1...Place the roof opening panel sliding glass and the shield in the closed position.
    2...With the driver’s door closed, place the ignition switch ON and wait for the overhead console lights to turn off.
    NOTE: Steps 3 - 4 must be performed within 3 seconds.
    NOTE: Steps 3 - 5 are to set up the overhead console to accept roof opening panel switch inputs to be held for up to a maximum of 150 seconds. Normally, the overhead console will consider the switch stuck after 30 seconds and ignore those longer inputs from the switch.
    3...Press the left map light switch once turning the lamp on.
    4...Without pausing, press and release the right map light switch four times ending with the lamp off.
    5...Without pausing, press and release the left map light switch once turning the lamp off.
    NOTE: Step 7 must begin within 2 seconds of releasing the switch at the end of step 6.
    6...Press and hold the sliding glass closed switch.
    The sliding glass will stall at the hard stop (closed position) and then move to the vent position.
    Then the shield will move to the fully open position.
    Release the switch and immediately begin step 7.
    7 ...Press and hold the sliding glass closed switch again.
    The sliding glass will move to the fully open position and then return to the closed position.
    Then the shield will move to the fully closed position.
    8...Release the glass close switch and verify proper operation.
    If the roof opening panel does not operate correctly, repeat the procedure.

    Thank You!
    Just fixed my 2020 Ford Edge ST sunroof. They were going to charge me damn near thousands to fix this at the dealership. They wanted $700 just to diagnose and look into it, then charge who knows what to actually fix it. It stopped working just after I came out of my warranty at 36k miles and I was bummed. Your the man!

    Thank you so much for the great information and demonstrations. Two local Ford Dealerships said that nothing was wrong with the rails. I ordered the replacement and both old rails were broken. I had found a plastic piece that caused the sunroof to jam and had been having a problem with leaks. Now it works as designed and advertised. Thank you once again!

      Nice! Check the other links in the description, I have one on where to lube the rear seal so it doesn't stick and make it break. I'd also be listening out for any pops/cracks when operating it and cease using if you hear any so it won't break even worse.

      I did the first track replacement around here on a 15 F-150. I did it in the evening at a dealership that stayed open until 9. Finished about 8:30 and started trying to program it. I know I was tired, but I could not get the timing right to make it program.
      Gave up and went home, came back next morning and got it the first time.
      Eventually after I mastered it, I thought it might be good to share a visual, because that sure would have helped me the first time.

      @@SealofPerfection Do you have or could you reference a video that explains what lube to use and shows where to apply the lube to a sunroof? Having trouble finding a good demo. Mine sticks in one spot sometimes and it will only get worse.

    • @SealofPerfection
      @SealofPerfection  3 года назад

      @@ThePackDad To lube what? The track? I'd use 3M silicone paste. You really don't have to lube it often, if ever.
      You do need to lube the back part of the seal on the front glass, where the two glasses touch. That will greatly reduce wear on the mechanism. I do have a video on that

    You just saved me over $600 dollars. My dealership replaced the tracks under warrenty but the sun shade would only shut half way so I was afraid to try the sunroof for fear it would get stuck open. Took it back and they saud "their diagnostics" say it has a faulty switch in the overhead console. Cost for new console was over $600 plus installation. I took the console apart and all looked good to me. Then remembered I saw your video a while back so I gave it a try. Majically the "fault switch" came back to life and all is good with the sunroof and sunshade. Thanks

    Thank you so much. I had my truck into the dealership for tailgate actuator recall (open while going down the road, harness repair). After taking 3 weeks to schedule so they had the parts, they kept it a week to repair. Upon pickup, they informed me the actuator was weak and needs to be replaced soon ($300). Now it didn’t open at all. I got so frustrated, I ordered the tailgate actuator myself and 20 minute install and now it works. On the drive home, I noticed the moonroof was open halfway. It wouldn’t close, only open all the way and back to halfway. Also sunroof didn’t vent or open. I was so irritated with Edwards Ford in Wahalla, SC. I called to tell them and they could get to it in a week on Thursday. I dropped off 8 am on Thursday and they explained could be a long job because headliner would have to come out, etc. I stopped by Friday afternoon to get a tool I left in the truck and they haven’t even touched it. I left with the truck unrepaired. I found your video 2 days later and it was so informative and it worked like a charm. Thank you. Thank you. What weasels at the dealership.

    Your video's are awesome. I was able to replace the ramps and reset the sunroof and shade using your video's. BTW, the driver's door has to be closed to reset the sunroof. Everything worked great, until I installed the accordian covers. I then got the opportunity to learn that the motor closing operation will stop and take the sunroof all the way back to full open if something is causing the closing motor to work harder than it is supposed to. Had a heart attack, then decided to remove the accoridan covers just in case those were causing the problem. The sunroof closed as it had before. So, I decided I dont really need those accordian covers on there anyway. Thank you for putting these videos online.

      Funny (not funny) enough, I set the cover halfway back and vented the moving glass and it got stuck again. Tried a handful of times to reset it and it is acting like it did the previous night. Maybe tomorrow morning, it'll reset correctly. I just hope it doesn't rain in Houston... I'm an idiot. Next time, if it actually works again, I'll definitely not mess around with it again until it can be fixed.
      Edit: It's worth noting that this technique seems to only work once after the truck is locked, unlocked, acc or ignition, then pressing all the buttons. In my case, the glass makes a plasticy cracking noise, the cover closes, and while the button is still pressed will retract all the way and stay that way. Repeating these steps ends in the same scenario, where the cover is all the way back.

    • @SealofPerfection
      @SealofPerfection  6 лет назад

      When the glass gets all the way back, release and repress the button quickly. And yes, it only works once, right after you turn it on. You can't start the programming again without turning it off and back on.

    • @spoderman8414
      @spoderman8414 6 лет назад

      Literally spent 3 hours messing around with it at my office parking garage until it seated fully. Won't be messing around with it anymore other than moving the cover. It's worth noting that only the passenger side was getting stuck on something and seems to be related to that thing that looks like a screw binding post (that moves in the squiggly track) since it almost never fully travels from one end to the other, which also seems to be the case on the driver side. The post is sticking out further on the driver side than the passenger side. Also, I was eventually able after greasing everything up to get the glass to go all the way back and forward (not flush though) and saw that long, flat plastic thing that the rubber boot attaches to get bent out of shape with the glass all the way back, which only happened on the passenger side.
      Yea that's a lot of crap but maybe someone can benefit from my confusion.

    • @SealofPerfection

      @@SealofPerfection Definitely appreciate the heads up. It seemed to be more of an error in the sequencing of the closing procedure. Truck is like new and not sure the roof had ever been opened. Recently serviced at the dealer with some work that included the disconnection of the battery. Everything seems to be in order as it did everything properly as shown in vid. Will definitely be aware if I decide to operate it again. Never really use it due to issues with the roof on my old 2008👍

      @@tifway be sure to lube the back of the front sunroof seal. Right where the two glasses mate together. Without lube, they will kind of stick and that puts an enormous strain on the arms that move that sunroof. That's part of what leads to failure.

    I never knew! My story: sunroof screen fabric rippling when opening, took it to dealer, they broke everything over the span of two or three weeks, I just had a recall service at another dealer, they looked at it for a persistent rattle, found it, couldn't fix it without 1000.00, now the screen squeals loudly and ripples when opening. Just prior to this 3 POPs! occurred while the glass was closing then auto opened then closed fine. Not sure what the POPs were but none now. Dealer won't fix the rippled screen and squealing. I opened a case with Ford against them. : / This video was helpful! I just need to know how to lube the screen mechanisms now.

    • @SealofPerfection
      @SealofPerfection  Год назад

      If the shade is rippling and not tight, it's either misaligned, or the guide strip isn't secure on one side. By misaligned, that means one of the tabs that the front bar of the shade mounts to might be not "in sync" with the other side.
      Hard to say what might have happened without knowing exactly what they did.

    • @SealofPerfection

      Lube the seal. Back of the front glass, where it contacts the rear, and all around the rear glass. Get some silicone paste for the front glass, and some good silicone spray for the rear.
      Use the "straw" that comes with it...spray some into the "ditch" between the rear glass seal and the roof...use a dull pocket knife to slip between the seal and the roof opening and run it around the rear glass seal. That'll let the silicone you have sitting on top of the seal get between the seal and the roof and it'll likely shut up the rattle.

    Dude, thanks for sharing your knowledge.
    It turns out, the two glass panels were stuck together ( I never would have thought that could happen). But after being closed for nearly 6 months, then trying to slide it open, it just pulled the corners down and groaned and stopped. I tried it a few more times and decided 'somethings going to break if i keep doing this'. Before I called the Dealer, and i have warranty on it, I knew someone would likely have a video on this.
    WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER
    No broken tracks, cuz i didnt keep jackin with it.
    I silicone sprayed the joining seals and slid a putty knife between and then I initialized it just like you said. Perfecto, Bro!!
    Don't know if you can tell how happy I am that the dealer doesn't have to get into my 2016 F-150 Lariat. Thanks again!

    • @SealofPerfection
      @SealofPerfection  4 года назад

      Keep them lubed. Also, whenever you want to open it, vent it first. That'll break the "seal" between the 2 glasses, and it's a lot easier on the track to push it up.
