The culprit is your seals sticking, realized that after doing 2 sets of track guides. Keep your sunroof seals lubed and it will save you time and money in the long run. The recommended lube (Krytox) is pretty pricey but it works.
@@bmwdave52GPL205, first time I opened mine to clean and lube it, I found enough excess grease to re-lube it several times, go figure LOL It did surprise me how much dirt had accumulated on the seals but mechanism was quite clean
@@waltershue3969 then someone used too much of the wrong stuff. I tried regular silicone lube and it worked for about a week. The Krytox works so well you barely need any at all. I put a little on back in October and it is still going strong. Will probably reapply here soon.
My sunroof would not initiate to open and I was very concerned because someone told me a dealer could charge as much as $3K to fix. This turned out to be an easy fix for me. So don't be afraid to take this project on. It was very easy to remove the top glass and do a visual inspection. I found two plastic fragments in mine. No signs of damage to the rails so that leads me to believe the broken plastic may have been there from the previous owner. Removed those and then applied some lubrication around the seal to allow easy opening/closing. Runs beautifully now.
I had the broken tracks on my 2018 F-150 Platinum under warranty. North Bay Ford in Santa Cruz told me that the mechanic who worked on these had left, and no other mechanic did. They sent me to Lott's Stereo and Upholstery. Owner told me, no problem, we do a lot of these. They fixed it quickly and well, and I paid them about $250, then took the receipt back to the Ford dealership. About a month later Ford called me and I picked up a check for the full amount. Lott's told me when I open / close it, hold the button until it opens / closes completely. Don't stop halfway. Not sure why, but I'm following his instructions.
Nice job. Best video I've seen on this repair. Great job with the repair, videos were perfect but most importantly the instruction set ran with the video and you stuck to the repair comments only. Thanks for not rambling on about your dog .....
Dang Mason!!! Slow down! Those scratches wreck all the work done. But I think I’ll put some making tape to protect my baby!! Thanks for the advice! It’s the hot sticky mess that breaks em. I use the jigaloo on my finger after I wash the truck!!
What about a sunroof shade on a 2019 expedition that opens randomly ? i have reinitialized it multiple times customer wants it closed but they can be driving down the road and it will open by itself? checked all software , tsb , and ssm nothing found, Just wondering if you have ran into this before ?
That's a Vista roof. Great design, rear motors for her pleasure. Made alot of money setting those up at the Ford dealer after the collision shop got them outta time.
got one at work right now waiting on approval that has broken guides and leaking water down onto the bcm and causing alot of issues. so i sold the whole track just incase of it being messed up
I had the same issue, track broke. I let it go to long snd unfortunately the cable wound itself into the headliner near the motor. If i could only replace the guide cable on one side it would work again
My truck is doing the same thing , only coming down on one side. If those new tracks didn’t fix it then what’s the part number for the parts to fix it?
He did a great job, but I didn't see him clean the tan roof liner inside (and I did see some finger prints) ... but he's such a great guy to watch and his passion is fantastic.
great video - thank you brother - you have another Sub ---more on F150 2021 an up please-- like always great detail ---so honest , true , and best of real life issues --
When I got my 2018 150, it was a year and a 1/2 old, and they were shot, and they sold the truck to me like that. They were replaced under warranty.Would they still replace them under warranty if it was beyond three years
May have the plastic chunks from the guide rails in the sunshade track. Put it in vent position, pull off the accordion blind, look to see if your guide rails are cracked or broken, if so you need those. Next open the shade and glass, stand on the seats and look carefully in the tracks for plastic chunks. The sunshade track is on the inside. If the shade has been closed on something or yanked on the cables could be damaged but kinda rare.
@phazerboy the shade opens fine all the time and closes ok when its cool outside. When it's hot outside it usually won't close. Always creaks and cracks when closing but sounds like it coming from rear of cab
@@MADMEATHEAD1 The sunshade isn't solid like it is on most vehicles. It rolls up like the ones on a house. Its spring loaded, and that sometimes goes bad. Also, It has to be lined up perfectly in the track. If the 2 sides are not even, the shade itself will flex and make noise. If the vehicle is out of warranty, close the shade and the glass, and never fool with it again. Thats a panoramic sunroof, not a regular one. Its huge, expensive and very fragile. If you have an extended warranty, its covered. Also, make sure both pieces of glass are secured properly to the track. sometimes they can get loose and fly right off the truck while driving.
@@MADMEATHEAD1 if the noise is from the rear it is the shade itself making noise as it unrolls. The frame has to come down, but much easier and not much more work to take it out. If it were me I would purchase the extended warranty from Ford probably cost around $1800 not sure as price varies. They require an inspection but they probably won't catch that. Then in a few weeks have it fixed. Then you are under warranty again for a few more years. Be sure and complain about the phazers when they start making noise. Just those 2 repairs will be more than you paid for the extended warranty. If it needs the sunroof frame you will be more than the warranty on that alone. And when the right side heater actuator requires a dash out you will be thankful.
My sun roof is in the 1/2 vent position and the sun shade is closed. How can I get the sun shade opened if the buttons aren’t responding. I just replaced my batteries and was going to reprogram but with the sun roof open and clicking when I try to close. Doesn’t allow to reprogram which is why I think the sun shade buttons are not responding. If anyone can help walk me through it would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance. Nobody has posted a video that shows sun roof problems with the shade closed.
Not the F150, but on other models that Ford makes, the track is built into the roof, and is not serviceable. The only way to fix it is to chop the entire roof off the car, and replace it. Its a $12,000 part. That doesn't include the 3 motors and labor. If the same thing breaks like on this F150, you need to replace the roof.
The front passenger side drain tube came loose on my '16 F150 XLT which allowed water intrusion and the footwell carpet and padding got swamped. Took a week to get it all dried out. The hose fitting wasn’t barbed and there was no retainer clamp. Sold the truck. Never buying a Ford again.
This is why if I decide to purchase another Ford?????????. I won't waste my time buying one with a sunroof. As my late Step- Grandfather told me before he passed, god rest his soul.🙏🙏. Buying all that extra crap is just one more thing to break.😂.
Oh shit no you didn’t do you have any idea how many people are going to mess this up in their driveway!!!😊 .. I can’t stop laughing at the average utube computer programmer diy guy completely messing this up 🤣🤣🤣
I would to keep from losing any small parts. No telling how long to get them. He can put it outside while waiting on parts. That’s just my guess. I was in car repair 50 years and have had to reassemble broken many times for those reasons.
Easy just don’t get sunroofs…Nothing but a pain in the ass anyway If u keep it clean and some proper lube it won’t break tracks I like sunroof but I don’t want something to mess with so I don’t get them My wife in her suv does and she takes care of it too lol
I’ve been fixing power sunroofs off and on since the 80’s.
Amazing that after all these years they still can’t get a simple mechanism design right ‼️
what do you expect from the cheapest trucks ever built, bunch of TRASH

The best fix for this is get a solid roof with no glass😊
Still a problem when they put all plastic for metal parts

What’s the best way to fix the wind noise in that visor when it doesn’t seal up against the front glass? It’s ridiculous the part is $300+ 2:33

I am having this exact problem. Thank you. Going in for warranty.
What type of grease should be used on these tracks?
How do you adjust the motor cables? Mine jumped timing. I replaced the arms and cleaned the tracks but it’s not in the right position
Have a f150 with same problem. Would be nice to see repair of plastic part that attaches to cable
Can you show how to get the headliner in and out of the truck without creasing it?

Great Video Mayson, thanks little Brother.

So you never protect the seats if you work on the interior? Specially light colors??
How to realign sunroof after changing rails ? Now it closes slightly crooked
So what do we do when the arm is broken like that? Ive replaced the tracks twice and now the arm is broken.
Same question. Assuming this was a dealership fix?
Would putting some silicone grease on the tracks make them last longer and work smoother?
Unfortunately not

If your truck is still under the factory warranty, they will
That broken plastic part looks like the perfect candidate for the superglue/charcoal trick.
What if it won’t open the back part up?
Anyone know what type and size socket needed for 2022 F-150 upper rear shock bolt?
Use a dial caliper and measure it.
Is that a Ford recommended glass cleaner? 👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
Is there a fix for the slow cracking "sunshade"? Sometimes, it won't close at all!

I wonder how many redesigns FORD did on all parts during COVID to save money and now they have been kicking themselves in the rear end? 😅
They didn't make it. It was outsourced to a different company.
