- Gotham's Dark Knight has appeared in many movies over the years. From Batman The Movie to Zack Snyder's Justice League.
But out of all these movies, I think one stands above the rest.... that movie being Batman Returns.

Fun fact: Both Tim Burton and Michael Keaton prefer Batman Returns over the original movie. And it's not hard to see why.
I like both, but i admit i still prefer the first one because of the Joker. If he was alive in Returns, it would easily be the best Batman movie.
@@Ian-hj4yt True. I would LOVE to see Nicholson's Joker talking to DeVito's Penguin and Pfeiffer's Catwoman considering they all worked together in different movies before and after this movie. Especially Jack and Michelle. I think they did 3 films.
@@Ian-hj4yt that would cutter up the movie like Spider-Man 3 with too many villains. If we did your idea mate batman returns would end up being the Spider-Man 3 of batman. Really enjoyable but too much crammed in. So nah returns is perfect as is without unneeded additions .
and Robert Pattinson too
I like how serious and dark this movie is and in the middle of all of it there’s
“Eat floor”
I love this movie so much
This is the most unique Batman movie ever made with a perfect blend of noir and horror.
And it also has some very unique versions of different Batman characters.
@Scott I know, I'm extremely excited for it.
@Scott and a noir too
That is because Tim Burton literally puts the Goth in Gotham City. All of Tim Burtons films are Gothic and his style is replicated more than anyone's simply because Tim Burton was born to make Batman. It is just a damn shame white moms during that time complained about the film being too dark cause I honestly think it would of gotten better. Only reason Tim didn't continue doing the films. Tim Burton actually wanted Batman to be more mature and dark.
@@anthonygordon9483 100% agree. They should get him back to make a Batman Beyond movie.
Controversial opinion: I personally consider this a Christmas movie, kind of like how "Die Hard" is considered one in some circles.
Not controversial, true
@@Mirrorcomics24 😊
Isn't Die Hard widely considered a Christmas movie? Also yeah, I consider Batman Returns a Christmas movie too.
@@RbkARI Good to hear. :) Now regarding "Die Hard," you'd be surprised; some circles don't consider it a Christmas flick despite its obvious setting, while other circles do.
89 is like the Anniversary and Returns Christmas so your argument makes sense
this masterpiece here in Europe is like a cult... pure art at its finest on screen in each scene. Never understood why in Usa is not loved that much... I'll always prefer the 1989 one just thanks to Jack/Joker but yeah, Returns is THE Batman movie.
That’s real good to hear, I’m just happy I grew up watching this, also Knox, old man Keaton as Bruce, Selina, penguin, etc should be a new series…
Probably because batman low key kills a ton of times in the films
This movie is awful. 10000 plot holes, dumb continuity awful portrayal of penguin
I’ll tell you why. It’s too long. The characters act nothing like the source material. Penguin is a gross man beast that wants to run for mayor, and if that doesn’t work kill every first born son in Gotham. Cat woman is. A zombie Rosen from the dead by cats and has literally nine lives, and Batman is a murderous monster. Michale Kenton looks confused, and everyone else is over acting like crazy. I could go on, but I’ll save you the time.
@@MrAdamloring1985 I can't see honestly low points here.. Thanks to that is a masterpiece. Probably not for anyone, for sure.
Age has made my appreciate this movie more and more. It's dark, it's funny, and it's kinda perverted. It is an absurdist fairy tale for adults, starring Batman characters
Same, as a kid I didn’t care for it.
@@MR.GOAT. As a kid I loved it. Schumacher films were the worse. I was very disappointed when Michael Keaton stop playing batman. When I saw Tim Burtons Batman it felt like batman. Even though the source material was a little off, the style of the film is pretty much the archetype of a batman film. It also set the standards for super hero films in general. What super hero film now doesnt use Muscle Suites and Rubber for customs. Batman was the first to do it. Plus this was also before CGI.
I blame Disney for Burton’s Alice as much as I blame Tim Burton.
Blame for what? For creating a masterpiece? While the original story is crap for dumb kids? Dude grow up
This Batman movie was an absolute masterpiece in my opinion. And I’m glad you got to review it
Also, Vee, you forgot to mention one thing about this movie. Originally Max Shreck was supposed to be the brother of penguin. The story was he was the prodigal son of the family whereas penguin was the black sheep; however, they didn’t go that route.
Oh, it's a bummer they didn't take that route. It could actually add some juicy, juicy drama to the story and make the Penguin even meaner 😈
@@narcisosanz8137 hell yeah dude
This is my all time favorite movie. Gotham is dark, brooding, it’s murky, it’s dirty, it’s gothic. Something modern comic writers can’t seem to understand. And throughout the 3 Tim Burton involved batman movies I think it captures that perfectly, and I love them for that.
Batman Returns is my favourite Batman movie. I just love the atmosphere, the gothic look or setting, the villains and the awesome soundtrack by Danny Elfman. People say oh it's not Batman movie this time, it's more of Tim Burton movie, good. McDonalds getting pissed because they can't sell their happy meal toys, good. He's taking risks and making it dark. It gets a lot of hate which I'm confused. All three characters worked so well. Danny Elfman had to create themes for Catwoman & Penguin. They're memorable. It's easily one of his best scores, highly recommend especially the Birth of the Penguin and his death which is still one of the saddest endings to a villain. It gets me every time. Well maybe the penguins moving his body is a bit silly but it works. It's not easy making the audience feel sad to a villain's death which is something fans didn't expect or want to see. Burton took risks, I'm so glad he did. I cant believe Danny DeVito got a Razzie nomination. You guys are the same idiots who nominated Kubrick & Brian De Palma for worst directors. Including Ennio Morricone's score of the Thing.
The costumes are great even the Bat suit improved. The origins for our villains are told well, both of them are memorable and yet again, the soundtrack makes them even better. Catwoman's origin might be a creepy to some, her first attack with El Scorpio from Predator 2 might be shocking to some especially kids. She's full of surprises.
It was fun seeing Christopher Walken, I can't believe his son is Leatherface or Zangief from Street Fighter. Lucky dad. Then again, Penguin's dad is none other than Pee-wee Herman.
Batman's introduction is sweet and badass. So many memorable shots & scenes. Burton really took it as far as he could.
Although there are some silly moments like the villains getting the blueprint of the batmobile, its still a dark film, so you kinda get a comic book film mixed with Burton's dark side. Overall, a fantastic underrated sequel that went to a new direction and managed to make the comic book characters a bit more interesting like the Penguin. Unfortunately, this is where the darkness stops, too bad, even as a kid, I loved it and still do. Sometimes I wish he continued with the sequels, Burton's version of these characters are unique and they stand out. You might love Nicholson's Joker more, just don't forget the Penguin & Catwoman.
Funny, as a kid I thought the baby was Batman, when the title showed up with all the bats, it looked like the baby was going to the bat cave. Its weird that both Batman films have great quotes with the word Honey in it. One coming from Joker and the other from Catwoman. And who could forget those cute little penguins with their rockets. Aww they're going to kill the children. Plus the Circus gang looks like Joker's henchmen. I almost forgot the silly pictures of Christopher Walken with Arnold, Elvis etc. Classic. And yes, he does say unlimited poontang. Always take risks, forget about what McDonalds think, pussies. Michael Keaton should have done something since he was the Founder. As Orson Welles once said to Ed Wood, "visions are worth fighting for".
Still has the best Catwoman in live action.
The one and only character for whom the B:TAS version is NOT the definitive version. Barbeau is a good second, but nobody beats Pfieffer.
I got to cop a bit of a feel with the Catwoman chick at movieworld when getting a hug for a photo. She had the Michelle suit which was hot as f#%k. That was some good clean fun right there.

Does anyone else love that at the end Bruce just adopts a cat. I mean there was no evidence to suggest that he knew that was Selina's cat, so he just picked up a random cat off the streets.
In the novelization, he DID know that was her cat. Even saying, "Miss Kitty, what are you doing out so late?" Which is very strange, because at no point are we told that Selina told Bruce her cat's name.
@@SeasideDetective2 Well, you don’t see what Bruce and Selina were talking about before they got into the Vicki Vale talk in front of the fireplace

Great work in getting Robert Wuhl's opinion, and, I know you'll disagree, but I think he has a point about the Burton/Schumacher series getting progressively worse with each hour. I love Batman 89 and Batman Returns (and unlike Wuhl, I even have time for the Schumacher films), but I do think the first hour of Batman 89 is the tightest in terms of storytelling throughout the entire series.
Genuinely think Returns is the closest Batman movie we have to the comics even with the slight deviations in story and characters. I'd love to see Tim be able to do a DKR movie with Michael!
Slight deviations? It’s cool you like the movie, but this movie is nothing like the comic.
@@MrAdamloring1985 well considering I've read most of the Batman comics from the 30's to the mid to late 2000's. I stopped around the New 52 era, there are a lot of similarities between Batman Returns and certain arcs and stories surrounding Catwoman and Penguin. Obviously Max Schrek was created for the movie and his name is a homage to the original Nosferatu actor of the same name. So yes, slight deviations.
@@johnhickey8321 really? In what issue is catwoman a zombie risen from the dead by cats? Where is penguin an actual deformed half penguin half man? Please show me any similarities, cause I’ve been reading and collecting since 1990, and I don’t really see any.
@@MrAdamloring1985 you're taking it too literal. That's the slight deviations I was talking about 😂 I'm talking in terms of story. Not character traits 😂 after Batman Returns though the penguin was turned a little more towards the version in the movie. In the TAS he had the same type of hands as in the film. The characters origins though are changed a little for the film but the characters and personalities are pretty consistent with the comics. Just penguin for some reason was given a gang suited more to joker than himself. Other than that though the story and characters are pretty on point. Especially the themes of duality with Batman and Catwoman even being consistent with their comic counterparts today. And the darker tone was consistent with how the comics where changing from the late 80's and early 90's. Good Times 😁
@@johnhickey8321 Penguins origins are totally different in the comics. There, he’s just a short chubby guy, who has a hip defect, causing him to waddle when he walks. But he is very smart, well spoken, and a crime boss. In BR, he’s born a foul, gross, slobbering monster, that eats cats, and raw fish. And as for Catwoman, she’s never struggled with the notions of being Catwoman or being a normal citizen. She’s always loved what she does, being a burgler, and even when she’s doing good, she loves the thrill of it. There are no questions of duality with her. On occasion Bruce will have a crisis, and wonder if he should stay Batman, but that’s about it. And as for story non of the things in this movie ever happen in the comics, our side of a character named Batman, another named Catwoman, and another named Penguin. That’s all the movie and the books have in common.
"You gotta admit, i played this city like a harp from hell!!!"

He says from a custom made, coin operated bat mobile, that he keeps in an RV, that he uses to take control of the bat mobile, that was hacked by a circus hand, with no known engineering or computer experience, by plans they found in the Gotham Patent office. God I hate this movie.
*DJ scratch*
The Dark Knight is a great “Joker” movie, even more so than Joker, which was good, but Heath still nailed it better.
Batman Returns is a great Batman movie and showed was a Batman movie should be like. Corruption, crazy scary villains, a Bruce Wayne always at wits ends with wanting to be normal, but can’t, much like how Vee points out the conflict in Selena Kyle and even how they say it in the film “were the same, split down the middle”
Funny how it’s one of the most “true to a Batman style” films but it always gets overlooked and called “too dark” but it’s perhaps the best adaptation of the Batman comics done on film, aside from The Animated Series, which had more material to work with to make as a series than a standalone film.
Not really, Batman’s more of a reactionary character in this movie rather than having motives. Love the movie still.

The Masquerade Ball scene with Bruce and Selina is so great it made me forget that they're dressing up in masks in December
😂
I've already added in my head cannon that Fox's Gotham is a prequel/reboot of the Burton movies. The show's Selina Kyle actress looks like a young Michelle Pfeiffer.
Penguins actor Robin Lord Taylor was also inspired by Danny Devito's Penguin and was also a fan of his version of the character.
And Jerome Valeska (pre-Joker) paid some homages to Jack Nicholson's Joker.
Naah, Jerome Valeska was much closer to Heath Ledger’s agent of chaos than Nicholson’s deranged mob boss.
Well, technically, Burton's Penguin, too, admired the finer things in life. He certainly appreciated female beauty, for instance. Maybe in a really crude, creepy way, but it still counts. And he did seem to enjoy wearing a top hat and bow tie, at least for a while.
A Gothic Tarzan
He was a rapist
Anyone remember this line from shrek batman returns: "Selena, Selena Kyle, you're fired
Even though I prefer 89' (still my favorite cbm) to 92' I appreciate the love and respect it's sequel is getting nowadays. I grew up loving it almost as much as the original and never really agreed with the hate that it got
"I mistook me for somebody else" is one of the best Freudian slips in cinema.
13:22 Fun fact, the actor who plays Chip Shreck is Andrew Bryniarski. He also played Leatherface in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake opposite Jessica Biel and I fondly remember him as the live-action Zangief in Street Fighter the movie. "QUICK, change the channel!" lmao
It’s definitely underrated
I’m happy Robert Wuhl showed up Knox showed up in Crisis On Infinite Earths
Robert Wuhl finished his cameo then went straight over to Mondo Burger! Loved hearing what he had to say! Long live Knox
I feel like one cool thing is that devito could easily reprise the role even now and still fucking own it, I’d love to see another quirky source accurate Batman movie
Yesterday I was literally thinking how this is or might be the best Batman movie for the music alone
Some of Elfman's best work, in my opinion.
@@spenser9908 the Danny elfman Spider-Man theme is what reminded me of it. They're similar. It's not obvious til you him the Spider-man theme then it becomes the penguin theme
This movie made the comic Penguin into a much better character. And I think we all know how amazing Michelle phieffer was as Catwoman. And I find her far more interesting here than the comic version. I mean I like Anne Hathaway's version which is true to the comics but I just like Anne hathaway, the character itself isn't as great. I like The Long Halloween movie version idk Batman Returns is the most interesting version to me.
Certainly the most stylish and atmospheric Batman film ever. It bored me as a kid--and blew me away upon a rewatch as an adult.
Batman Returns is actually my favorite live-action Batman film, and third favorite Batman film overall.
My top 5 Batman films are:
1. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
2. Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker (Uncut Version)
3. Batman Returns
4. Batman, 1989.
5. Batman Begins/The Dark Knight (It's a tie).
Ive never watched the animated Batman movies but i kinda want to.
I'd recommend them. Most of them are better than the live-action films. In fact, I think animation fits Batman, and other comic book characters, better than live-action.@@MuriloAraújo-j2x
Vee didn't focus on the ball scene between Bruce and Selina enough for me. Masterclass in acting and probably some of the best dialog in any batman movie
It's a great scene. I love how Bruce and Selina's aren't wearing masks because they're really wearing their masks in reality.
Burton did a really great job on his Batman movies granted at the time Batman's no killing policy wasn't as established as it is now. The idea of Burton doing a hero movie without the hero killing was probably never going to happen. Perhaps do the original Ninja Turtles movie as it came out around the same time and is very dark for a hero movie also do Ninja Turtles vs Batman
I literally just came home from watching this in the theatre and Penguin and Catwoman really steal the show. They gave amazing performances and Keaton delivered as needed but their raw, animalistic performances were just other worldly. This movie is everything a movie should be. I don’t even like Tim Burton movies but his personal touch and vision absolutely fits Batman Returns.
I want Vee to review the 1990 Flash tv series and the Adam West Batman. Hes already done Birds of prey theres a few more of those oddball campy super hero shows that hes yet to talk about. As well as Lois and Clark the new adventures of superman, which ive personally been watching and genuinely enjoy a LOT more than i thought I would.
The Robert Wuhl cameo was a great treat for Burton Batman fans. Was a good message too.
I love Batman Returns, and Michelle Pfeiffer is the definitive Catwoman, yet to be dethroned.
Also, Danny Devito was great, despite the wierd interpretation.
I love this movie. It's probably not my favorite Batman movie but it's definitely in my top 3 with The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. I'm also excited for The Batman. That movie has the potential to become one of the greatest, maybe even the greatest Batman movie ever.
The dark Knight has to be my favourite batman movie and I'm not going to explain why. I can't be bothered.
Lol
You can't be bothered because you like a shitty Batman flick?
@@thisisnotachannel shitty? Seriously lol. Just because it’s not your favorite doesn’t mean it is by any means shitty. And if you qualify it as a shitty “Batman” movie, then you could argue the same for Returns-Just in a different ways. Sure it matches the tone of the character and his world, but the depiction of the characters and their morals are completely different.
😂😂
This has alway been my favorite of the old Batman movies too
I have to admit, for years I didn't really much care for this movie (relative to Batman movies), aside for the aesthetic. However, in like the last year I've come to appreciate it for the gothic elseworld movie that it is. Still a bit dark for me in places, but it definitely holds a unique place in the Batman mythos!
Same fam, same. Except the darkness for me was perfect
One of my favorite super hero movies of all time. It's so personal yet bigger than life. When they light up the tree and bats come out and they show batman. Mwah chefs kiss amazing.
Couldn’t help but agree
I love when you talk about anything Batman related!
I agree. I was born in 92 and Watched these movies on the vhs so much. But I’d comfortably say I watched Batman returns , 3:1 times for Batman (1989).
That cameo was really cool
These actors' cameos are amazing, really raising the overall great quality of your Batvideos ;).
I enjoyed Robert Wuhl’s cameo in Crisis On Infinite Earths
I've noticed a trend recently of people showing Batman Returns a lot of love, or straight out saying it's their favorite Batman movie. I'm happy people are coming to their senses about this movie. The masses have been blinded by the current comic book movie climate for some time now, but they're starting to open their eyes again, in search for something other than cookie-cutter. Batman Returns is the result of a director given permission to pursue a completely unique take on a previously existing property. And it's bizarre, macabre, depressing, and tragic. It's beautiful. We will never see another Batman movie like this.
THIS^
Definitely one of my favourite Christmas movie, I get drunk, put on Batman Returns, then put up my white and red holiday tree. It gets better ever year. I don't know about best Live action Batman, but I can say I have watched it many more times than all the others, due to my yearly tradition.
I loved Batman Returns when I first saw it in theaters. Highly underrated.
Batman Returns is more of a Tim Burton movie than a Batman movie, but I honestly love that about Returns. It depicts Batman, Penguin and Catwoman all as rejects, victims of Gotham City who deal with their traumas in different ways. It was definitely the most unique of the Live action films, and something a lot of people weren't ready for.
This has always been my favorite Batman movie
For me not only the best Batman movie of all time, but also the best superhero movie of all time. I just love everything about it - the atmosphere, characters, actors, music, visuals. Just everything about this movie screams "STYLISTIC". Yeah the script have some problems, but goddamnit I still cry on the Penguin death scene despite his monstrous plan. This is where you know that you watching masterpiece!
20:40 The concept, for those not remembering their SAT words, is "verisimilitude".
SAT?? I learned that word thanks to A Series of Unfortunate Events!!!!
I think I heard that Harvey Dent was originally going to be included but was replaced with Max, the explosion at the end of the movie that killed Max was supposed to scar half of Harvey and turn him into Two-Face.
I love the use of cameo in your videos, it adds so much! i remember from your gotham video you had bruce, butch and someone else in and it was nice to see. id have love to hear his thoughts about coming back for crisis on infinite earths but it was cool to hear from him
i personally wouldnt mind seeing danny divito come back too play more of the snobbish gangster if he's given the chance
I'm pleased to say that he came close in the scene that shows him and Batman confronting each other just before Catwoman shows up. You can see that he's trying to come off as a well-spoken politician there, even if it is a phony act. He even pretends to be a good guy in the shooting script: "We'll be working hand in glove in Gotham's glorious future." I just wish that scene had not been pared down so much in the final film.
And ironically, in that scene I think Tim Burton missed the chance to do something truly Burtonian. BATMAN RETURNS is "Gothic" in terms of its thematic content as well as its décor, with literary allusions to Milton, Coleridge, Mary Shelley (what with all the FRANKENSTEIN imagery), etc. But what about William Blake, an often overlooked "children's poet" who, in his masterwork "The Marriage of Heaven and Hell," proved himself to be TRULY Gothic? The Penguin is supposed to be an eloquent bookworm and (in this film, at least) very much a "satanic hero." So I can easily imagine even the DeVito version of him retorting to Batman's "You're not mayor" with " 'What is now proved was once only imagined.' - William Blake." And then, when he said "You don't really think you'll win, do you?", Batman could fire back with " 'Everything flows.' - Heraclitus." Granted, that would sound more than a little awkward coming from Michael Keaton's mouth, and Burton's not known for being a connoisseur of either English literature or Greek philosophy. But I find that a lot more interesting than both of them saying "Things change." And it would not only suit both the character of the Penguin AND Burton's Gothic affectations (well, at least in the case of Blake), but demonstrate that the Penguin and Batman were intellectual equals.
This is one of my two favorites movies ever, for reasons you and the posts mention. Let’s not forget about the song “Face to face” by Siouxsie and the Banshees, playing in the scene in the ball, an amazing song and one the best from the band in my opinion. Max Shreck also reminds the band’s bassist Budgie, watch the video.
im 43 and batman was the first movie i saw without my parents in theater which is still in my mind a big deal. these days when i revisit these films.....part 2 actually competes well with part 1. back in the day i would clown the shit out of batman returns but its so fun it holds up.
speaking of 4k ..the 4k of this is amazing. it's really close to the original print I remember seeing in theaters.
Greatness video Brother!! The movie still holds up 30 years later!!
the outro is still so god-damn good
I completely agree with you on this one. Superhero movies have lost their comic-esque aesthetic.
Great review. Always loved this Batman film. Great to see more love for it.
This movie always intrigued me... I remember always seeing it at my local video store when I would go to grab a WWF video. The cover with the penguin, catwoman, and Batman was beautiful. I remember finally renting it and loving it as much as Batman 1989. A triumph...
after the 18:52 marker, I am amazed you got Knox himself to speak about his experience on Batman. Bless you sir ^_^
This is a polarizing movie, but I certainly liked it. It is for sure underrated. I do not necessarily agree that it is the best, but it is not bad at all, that is for sure. It is a good movie. I like it.
This and the 1989 batman with jack nicholson are the ultimate batman movies in my oppinion , pure magic
Why can't we get more comic book movies like this and Sam Raimis Spiderman? Comic book movies don't have to be a realistic crime drama or a borderline comedy with jokes every 5 seconds.
I agree actually
Cuz people seem to fear being called cheesy, it's a shame that a lot of movies nowadays feel like they can't allow themselves to be authentic due to that fear of not people thinking it takes itself too seriously
14 years before It’s Always Sunny, a show that as of now is more than 14 years old.
In my opinion, what was attempted with the tragedy, vengeance, and romance of Selina in Returns was executed better with Andrea in Mask of The Phantasm...
Like Returns was the Blueprint that walked so that Phantasm could run. I just felt more closure and somber satisfaction with Andrea no longer being able to see Bruce again because she was consumed by her darkness that Bruce couldn't save her from and the scene when Bruce discovers the locket in the Batcave and silently weeps to himself because he knows that she is gone forever, he wiould no longer know her warmth or her wit. He accepts and the Dark Knight launches himself into action, and continues his crusade against crime if but for one more night. Whereas Returns gave me more questions than answers.
Andrea and Selina feel very similar. I might even have analysed to see if Andrea was inspired by Selina, as I've seen inspiration for films from other films before - *SPOILER ALERT FOR TIM BURTON'S PRIOR FILM, EDWARD SCISSORHANDS* - For instance, the Penguin is evil Edward Scissorhands, having the same rise and fall from grace arc, and being revealed to and then retreating to their private lair story that Edward has. However, this is already a clear impossibility, as Mask of the Phantasm came out just a year after Batman Returns.
Pfeiffer in the dance hall scene when she is losing it is fantastic.
Aaaaaa, Robert Wuhl in the flesh, I cannot believe you were able to contact him!!!!!! Its so nice seeing him, his Knox character was fantastic, very charismatic!
Wow I graduated in 92 from high school. Way to make me feel old Vee. Thanks for the content.
My nose could be gushing blood......
100% agreed!
I was 12 in 92, and didn't know much about Batman before watching it, other than the silly 60s show, which i liked, but knew wasn't really Batman.
And Batman Returns is still the best!
The soundtrack is also amazing.
I highly suggest the theme of Selina's transformation, and the Cobblepot tomb medley.
I have it on my phone and it had been a long time since i watched it or heard the soundtrack, but when "The Cemetery" started playing, i didn't recognize the intro, and was like, "This is clearly Elfman... But what movie is this...? It's so beautiful...."
Then i hear the penguin undertones and am like, "What? I'm crying over a PENGUIN song?"
It's truly transcendent...
My favorite movie of all time
I really love the Tim Burton Batman movies. I don’t think younger people today that either weren’t alive yet or too young to remember when the two Tim Burton Batman movies came out but it literally changed how people view to things. The first thing that changed was how people view comic book movies and the other thing it changed was how main stream America viewed Batman. Before the 1989 Batman movie to the average American Batman always wore a blue and gray costume and he was in bed by 8 o’clock every night. In pop culture outside of comic books the only two references they had were the Adam West version of Batman and the Batman from the super friends cartoon and they were essentially the same Batman, Adam west even voiced that Batman at times. What The Tim Burton Batman movies did for Batman in the main stream was the same thing that the dark Knight returns comic book did for Batman to the comic book fans. I didn’t hate Batman forever, I had fun watching it in the theaters I actually went and saw it twice but it can’t touch the Tim Burton Batman movies. And while the two Tim Burton Batman movies will be two of my favorite movies of all time, not just comic book movies, for me personally my favorite Batman movie of all time will still be Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. I won’t argue with anyone though on their favorite Batman movie, it’s all entertainment. Just for me personally Christopher Nolan‘s dark Knight trilogy take the top three spots and then right behind his trilogy are the two Tim Burton movies.
I loved this movie so much. And Michael Keaton and all the characters are my favorites interpretation of Batman franchises, my favorite live action Batman series. And thank you! I been trying to explain why I didn’t care about Nolan’s Batman and they look at me like I’m crazy. Love this ❤️
Good point about realism, always thought Nolan went in wrong direction with that.
All these different styles make things interesting, it would be boring if everything was the same. It's why Marvel, though with Chris Hemsworth leading the way, wanted to spice things up with Thor: Ragnarok. What matters is that the style is done in a way that's well-suited for the material.
@@tornadochaser2457 Well, that is a good point too.
@@MrGlasspider LMAO "good point"?!! It's an AMAZING POINT! I should run for president and rule this country, with you all KNEELING BEFORE ZOD!
... damn, did I say "Zod"?!! Power corrupts so fast. I'd like to withdraw my campaign.
For me, this isn't really a Batman film, it's more just a Tim Burton. Tho your points to help me appreciate what it DID get right =)
when I was younger i loved this movie and as I got older my love for batman returns didnt change at all. had it on a old used vhs tape from block buster video and then eventually got it on a special edition dvd at least. that shows my love for it. prefer cat woman in this than in the dark knight rises. not all characters look good in a grounded in reality comic book universe. but thats me. plus as I got older my appreciation for certain things are noticed like the ice queens legs in pantyhose. hehe. it is a comic book looking world dark or not. plus got to love that line bruce said to alfred. "security? who let vickie vale into the batcave?"
That's so cool that you got Robert Wuhl to talk to you! He's great in Batman, he's super charismatic and personable. I remember in a Batman (1989) retrospective, where they did interviews with the actors, he said he loved being in Batman, and was disappointed that he wasn't asked to come back for the sequel, and then he said or the other ones after a minor pause. He must've felt self-conscious, considering his opinions on them here! I knew there was more to his statement, and it was being masked behind insecurities!
I don't think there is a definitive Batman movie. If I'm being totally honest, my favorite is either Batman(1989) or The LEGO Batman Movie.
What are your thoughts on Mask of The Phantasm?
@@jordantorres2139 It's alright. I didn't really care for the twist, as it was insanely predictable and I don't really like it when Batman has love interests that aren't Catwoman. Hamill's Joker kind of made up for it.
@@thefilmwatcher1216 you don’t like when he has love interests that aren’t Catwoman, yet your favorites are 89, with Vicki, and Lego Batman, with Batgirl
@@gbrogo7139 I don't count Batgirl, and Vicki, while still not very interesting, at least had chemistry with Bruce, which is more than I can say for Rachel from The Dark Knight or Chase from Batman Forever
So much this! IMO the Tim Burton movies are still the best movie interpretations of Batman and Batman Returns is a timeless masterpiece.
I'm glad you share this opinion. I've seen too many RUclipsrs talk about this movie and bash it as if they didn't love it the first time they saw it. Danny DeVito was horrifying, Michelle Pfeiffer was magnificent. Walken was at his most villainous. This movie was great.
Upon rewatching Tim Burton’s Batman films, I found that instead of being a crime epic or a C student football player’s cgi interpretation of a the next big super hero movie, Burton approaches Batman through lens of fantasy and arthouse. They don’t constantly hit you over the head with dialog explaining plot details or character motivations at every moment, they’re not huge cartoon set pieces trying to come off as a live action spectacle. Instead of telling his stories through dialog and cgi clusterfuckery, Burton does so through stunning visuals and subtlety.
The dark knight is probably the better film in terms of accessibility, but if you’re judging the Batman films on pure art, I’d say Burton’s films are the better of the lot.
Agree with a lot of this! Batman Returns is my favorite of the Burton films for all the reasons you mentioned. It's a big improvement in the first and Burton was allowed to really give us his interpretation of Batman!
Great video. Batman Returns is a stunning film and really doesn’t get the full recognition it deserves. Both DeVito & especially Michelle Pfeffier are iconic in their roles👍
I 100% agree while it’s not my favorite Batman movie it’s for sure a top 3 Batman movie and the most underrated
By far my favorite batman movie.
One of my favorite films out there. And honestly Batman Returns is always neck and neck with The Dark Knight for me as far as my favorite live action Batman movies thus far. Gotta say, Matt Reeves' The Batman looks VERY promising to me!
I LOVE THIS MOVIE!! I like Batman 89 but this is easily the better of the Burton films
DeVito really looks like Lon Chaney in London After Midnight. as you say - pure nightmare fuel.
Max Schreck is terrifying cos hes a real world villian who doesn’t need to wear a mask.
That little busta rhymes crispy thing from Halloween resurrection🤣🤣
It has Christopher Walken in it - just that's enough to put it on top.
He’s on to something saying they drop in quality every hour he is definitely on to something
THE CAT SPIT MADE HER IMMORTAL! IT'S NOT DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND!
Seriously tho between Michelle Pfeifer and Anne Hathaway, Michelle was wayyyy more cat-like. Anne just wore the suit and delivered the lines but not cat-like. Go back and watch, she spits out perfectly timed witty comebacks before the other person can barely finish their sentence. There's no laxed, hedonistic, sarcastic, "I'll get to it when I feel like it" approach that is so synonymous with cats.
Michelle pulls this off flawlessly. She makes sure to breathe or even laugh when she speaks. She even gesticulates like a feline. She gives off that "I'd rather be napping or getting stroked(entendre alert), but I'll speak to these peasant idiots, I guess🙄" vibe.
If you've ever called a cat over and watched how they take their sweet ass, sassy time to get to you- that's Michelle's Catwoman.
If you've ever called a dog over, and they are right up under you in a second's notice because they already recognize the command you're about to say- that's Anne's Catwoman.
But this is from a strictly quasi-anthropomorphic/zoomorphic pov
