Kobe is a culinary city known (and loved) for its premium namesake beef and sake. But this didn’t happen overnight-there was a 1200-year period in Japan during which the Emperor of Japan banned the consumption of meat. This restriction ended in the Meiji period in the late 1800’s when the country opened up to foreign traders and Western influence. Shizuka takes us on a multi-sensory journey through the charming city of Kobe in Hyogo Prefecture.
Shizuka begins her premium beef quest at the Kobe City Wholesale Western Market, the processing plant for Kobe beef and the site of the famed cattle auctions. Our cheerful host sanitary suits-up and heads inside the auction quarters, where she marvels at a Kobe beef auction and quizzes one of the auctioneers on the process.
The next stop on this culinary tour of Kobe is Nada, one of Japan’s top sake-producing regions! Shizuka arrives at Nadagogo-sakedokoro, a brewery turned community gathering place to sip on and appreciate the region's famed sake. Shizuka toasts to the gods and slings back some nihonshu (sake) with the Nadagogo operator. He presents her with a flight of the finest before they continue to tour the facilities.
With her spirit fuelled by sake, Shizuka ventures to Arima Onsen-a hot spring town in the mountains of Kobe with a history dating back over a 1,000 years. Here, Kobe’s superstars combine for a Kobe beef and sake pairing at Gekkoen Hot Spring Hotel. Shizuka marvels at the spacious room ahead of her evening meal. With a click of Shizuka’s fingers, a grand multi-course feast appears, starring Kobe beef and accompanied by premium sake, of course.

I was in Kobe last June, and it was unbearably hot; I can't imagine how hot it is now (September). Another thing than disappointed me was that all the Kobe beef restaurants were closed between 2pm-5pm, and you needed a reservation to eat at most restaurants, and you had to speak Japanese to make a reservation. Don't expect to be able to just stop by to eat the Kobe beef. You need to plan ahead.

I don't know where you are from but I'll guess the United States. You could benefit from an etiquette lesson. Do your travel research, the Country does not bend to you; you must adapt and be respectful (which most traveller are not). Learn to speak the local languages in phrases ( get a translation book or google), learn the cultural do's & don't and most importantly be humble kind & respectful. If you do your travels will be enriched.

Oh that's very intriguing about how they heat up the sake! It's got to be precise control of temperature or the alcohol will evaporate out. And while I can think of some Western hot drinks that have booze added (e.g., an Irish Coffee) I can't recall anyone heating up a western alcohol to drink straight.

      @@ladyhaltom No prob!
Narita is actually about 35 or 55 mins away from Central Tokyo by train. Haneda Airport is a lot closer - but you'll still need to catch a train into Tokyo from either. I'd just grab whichever flight is cheaper to fly into.
I'd suggest trying to land during the day - if possible - catch the shuttle train (forgot the exact name of it, but there are plenty of signs) to get to Tokyo, and connect to any neighborhood you're interested in staying.
There's TONS of lodging for all kinds of budgets! From super cheap hostels to spartan - but totally fine and inexpensive businessman hotels, and of course fancy luxury hotels!
I was actually looking at December prices the other day - flights and lodging, and they're already going up, it's best to book as soon as you can.
Have a great trip! My first trip to Tokyo was in the December holiday season a few years ago. It's SO nice to walk around and explore in the crisp cool air, and there are so many beautiful light displays all over the city. You're gonna love it!
      Have a great trip! 🙂👍

As indicated by Shizuka's slurred speech and bright red cheeks towards the end of the video. The poor lass had all the Kobe beef and alcohol her petite frame could tolerate which says a lot about the quality of the food!

I live here in Kobe, and I can say Kobe beef is way over rated, and defiantly way over priced.
