Tahoe Rim Trail (TRT) - Day 10 - Took a wrong turn and hiked some of the PCT | Plans in flux all day

  • Plans changed as the day progressed
Daily = 17.7 mi TRT (20.3 mi total)
    TRT total = 106.4 mi
    Total hiked = 111.1 mi
We were going to hike about 10.5 miles today to Ward Creek but the sign at Barkers Pass Trailhead showed 16 miles to town. The lure of a bed and showers were motivation enough to get us to change our plans. Our goal shifted to 17.7 miles. That would have been plenty of miles as it was but we missed a turn where the PCT split from the TRT and had followed the PCT trail 0.8 miles before we realized our mistake. That meant we now had to do an additional 1.6 miles on top of the 17.7 miles for a 19.3 mile day. Add on to that the 1 mile walk to get to our rental car, we put in a record for both of us of 20.3 miles.
Well, we didn’t realize how difficult and expensive it would be to get a room in Tahoe City. Rooms, if they were available, were going for $460/night. We decided to try our luck in Reno, a 50 minute drive away. We tried a LaQuinta but quickly got our money back when we found hair on one of the beds and the room smelled like pee. We ended up at a Whitney Peak Hotel (Hilton) in downtown Reno. What a fiasco.
Time for some well deserved rest.

Dang! What a heck of a day! But these are the ones you'll talk about and laugh about forever. Y'all definitely looked haggard at the end. When I was doing part of the Pinhoti solo, I went the wrong direction for about a mile. 🤦‍♀️ Felt so dumb at the time. It was a lesson learned to check my location if it feels "off."
Glad you had the rental car to get you somewhere else for a room.

Going the wrong direction is a lesson I’ve learned more than once. I had a feeling some the I g was off and I should have looked at my map then and there. Love and learn (again!). It made for an extra long day and we were so ready to be done when we hit Tahoe City. Glad we had the rental car. Without it, I’m sure we would have ended up at a campground instead of a hotel at the outrageous prices they were asking for. Things have a way of working themselves out and yes we will remember this day and laugh about it for years to come 😂

What a challenging day! All that hiking then a nasty place when you want to rest. Hopefully it all worked out.

@@ioonthetube It could have been a lot worse for sure. It was a bit frustrating at the time but those views were pretty nice 😊. As you said, it happens and you make the most of it.

Wow. A long day!! Congrats on breaking your record! That trail mistake was a beautiful one for sure!! Hope you were able to get rested up. Sucks about the room situation but glad you ended up getting one for a better price! Safe travels. Rest easy. Well deserved!

Thank you.I can’t imagine walking 20+ miles per day on a consistent basis like the PCT hikers do. Everything has a way of working itself out. We were lucky to have the rental car.
