Must have RESOURCES to plan your “On Your Own“ self-guided Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB) hike
I finally feel like I have the right resources to make the Tour du Mont Blanc hike actually happen. My longtime friend, Terry, and I will be hiking this trail together in 2025 over an 11-day period. This video will cover the resources I am using to plan and execute this hike. I recently published a video on the 8 key decisions you need to make before even beginning the planning process. You can find that video here: ruclips.net/video/7vg9NiUVQwY/видео.htmlsi=ZVYZ7HGj6U18Ri-F

    I was watching AT videos from the year i hiked and came across your video.. Omg its Doughboy! I met him on trail! I regret not asking him for his contact now because I really miss this guy! He was such a sweetheart and wonderful company at camp. The best part of the trail really is all the folks you meet along the way.

      I ran into him again one other time. He was cooking at Lampert Shelter the old fashioned way. I give him tons of credit for honoring the past the way he did. You can see him at 10:36 in this video: ruclips.net/video/RXHVEYUke4U/видео.htmlsi=jZnhnGbh4Umv5Tfy. A unique individual indeed. I liked him. I do agree with you that the best part of the trail was the people. I randomly met one of my hiking partners who I hiked about 600 miles with at a hostel in Georgia. I also randomly met Pollyanna who I now consider a very good friend. We hiked over 300 miles of the AT together and have done the Foothills Trail, 5 sections of the Colorado Trail, a bit of the Long trail, and a portion of the Tahoe Rim Trail together since then. I crossed paths with so many people and when I think back it’s the people that bring me the biggest smile. Thanks for commenting. You gave me a chance to reminisce a bit 😊

      It’s a great trail. I started backpacking when I lived in Idaho in my late 20’s. I had a long hiatus (work, kids) until I got back into it in my late 50’s. What I love about backpacking is that you are able to get to some amazing places that you can only get to by foot. I’m glad you enjoyed watching the videos. We definitely had a unique way to complete that hike 😊. Best wishes to you on your future trips. I’m sure they will be AMAZING!!!

    Just found your videos on the TRT. I’m thinking of doing this in 2025. Nice idea to slackpack the first day. I’ll be checking out the rest of your videos. Quick question, what dates were you on trail? I’m trying to decide what time of year to go. Best wishes Ladies!!

    • @CzyzAdventures
      @CzyzAdventures Месяц назад

      We arrived on July 7 to acclimate a few days. Our first day on trail was July 11 (slack pack to ease into it and to address the water situation). We ended up making quite a few adjustments to our original schedule for many reasons , took more zero days than originally planned, & had some bigger mile days than originally planned. Our last day on trail was July 28(we weren’t in a hurry and we were able to enjoy some of the towns along the way). July was great this year. We had planned on doing this trail in 2023 but delayed due to the high snow year. We only had one major thunderstorm, and rain for a short time on a couple of days. Bugs weren’t too awful for us although I heard a week or 2 earlier they were pretty bad. We hit a heat wave the first week on trail and it was chilly the last 2 days on trail. Every year will be different but I’m glad we went when we did. We saw LOTS of wildflowers. If you have any questions I can help you with don’t hesitate to reach out. Happy Trails! 🥾🥾

    • @horsedog713
      @horsedog713 Месяц назад

      @@CzyzAdventures Thanks, I’ll definitely reach out if I have more questions. How many miles a day did you do? I’m an older hiker so I go slow. While I was on the AT I averaged 9-12 miles a day. How does the TRT compare to AT?

    • @CzyzAdventures
      @CzyzAdventures Месяц назад

      @horsedog713 our miles varied but here’s a breakdown…12.8(slackpack), 10.5, 10, 9.4, 15.9(slackpacking), 0, 9.1, 8.3, 13.8, 20.3(incl 1.6mi on PCT in error), 0, 19.6(slackpacking- we actually went CCW on that section to avoid major uphills), 0, 13.7, 6.9, 0, 14.6, 9.7. The AT terrain is more difficult but don’t underestimate the altitude or the heat and you have to make sure you have your water planned out. You won’t find a straight up and down trail like the AT (they use switchbacks on the TRT) and there are definitely a lot less roots and rocks. The higher elevations have rocks but nothing like the scrambles you have on the AT. I try to show the terrain as I’m hiking so you should be able to get a pretty good feel on what you’ll see as you work through some of the posted videos. I can’t emphasize enough how the altitude and heat can impact someone’s hike. We had 2 of the 4 of us that didn’t complete the trail and these were a big factor for our oldest member of the group at 72. She is an accomplished hiker with many trails completed including the AT, Foothills, Art Loeb, & part of the Colorado Trail. I am 63 and the Terry who finished with me is 62.

There are a couple of places where you can’t camp (if you are within a 3 mile of Watson Lake - you have to camp at Watson Lake) and between Tunnel Creek Road and Spooner there are designated camping areas - Marlette and North Canyon Campgrounds). Congratulations on completing your beautiful hike. I am an older hiker who solo long distance backpack with my dog. I always think hiking longer distances with a group is much more difficult. I am envious you have people to actually backpack with. None of my older hiker friends want anything to do with long distances hiking or for that matter backpacking any more. I will be doing the Colorado Trail next, just me and my dog. She never complains or tires. That trail must have been very dusty and your right altitude is an issue, especially for us East Coasters. It’s probably my number one concern in Colorado, that and thunderstorms. Take care and I will check some more of your videos. It kind of down year for me because my wife had a big operation and I am needed home, which is what we do for those we love. Take care

      Thank you. I give you huge kudos for getting out there and hiking on your own. I bet your dog loves going with you. I prefer going with others but have gone SOLO. I actually met Pollyanna on the Appalachian Trail while I was SOLO. I have a playlist for the first 5 segments of the Colorado Trail if you want to see what the first part of the trail is like. (ruclips.net/p/PLnRAyIvPpjPijB0oTjdj5nwvpyJUvUmaU&si=4a83fEJqTkGA-uLc). One of our hiking partners had some issues with the elevation and I took Diamox as a precaution. Elevation is a big deal and I attribute me not being able to finish the John Muir Trail to it. Colorado definitely has those thunder storms coming through in the afternoons. We even had hail one day. I wish you success on your Colorado hike and a speedy recovery for your wife. Happy Trails 🥾🥾

    Congratulations !!! thank you for sharing 🙂 The TMB is definitely different :) I've done it in 2010 solo (it was my first long-distance, I was 40) at the beginning of the season (late June start) and did not pre-book my huts... but now it is extremely popular and busy. Be prepared to full huts (don't forget earplugs !) and busy trails. It is stunning and well worth it though. If you want a bit less crowds, consider September. Its not as green but less people and steady weather on average. Either way, Enjoy!

      @@CzyzAdventures As it was my 1st ever multi-day (I don't backpack at home) - I did it almost "by the book" (according to the 11-day plan in cicerone guidebook). I started at Les Houches & hikes counter-clock. I took the "high" variant via Col de Tricot & Refuge de Miage on my day 1. And did a very short variant en-route La Fouly to stay away from the road. Otherwise, I took the 'main TMB route' (as far as I recall, it was 14 years ago lol). It's really hard to chose highlights on this trail. I'm not avoiding... it truly is so beautiful throught. Many skip the section between La Fouly and Lake Champex because it is considered less dramatic, which it is. But I still enjoyed it and would not recommend the skip. Everything else was truly superb !!! 2 TMB variants that I got to do on other occasions: 1. Last summer while section-hiking the GR5, I took the "valley route" between Les Houches and Contamines (day 1 of my TMB - in which I took the high variant, as explained above). It was surprisingly good, and not very flat at all as the name might hint at (but still significantly easier than the high one). Very pastoral, lovely little villages... If struggling, I would take it even though the high-one is definitely more dramatic. 2. When walking from Chamonix to Zermatt on 2011, I took the 'Fenetre D'Arpette' TMB-high-variant. This one is super rocky and at times steep; is recommended only in good weather! the TMB-low-variant (Alp Bovine; I think it is the 'main-TMB') is MUCH easier. But again - although the high-route is excellent - I loved both... the low-variant is easy walking and still rewarding so - if in doubt, don't feel like you are missing-out on the low-route (in comparison with the high). Regarding end-of-Aug vs. early September: I've hiked in Europe several times since this first one. Crowds are an issue for me, especially on a super-popular hike like the TMB. I find that September works the best all considering. The weather always worked out well for me during the 1st half of the month (as much as mountain weather can...). So I personally go during September. The only disadvantage imo is - less green Scenery. The Alps are at their best early in the season... :-)

      If you are looking for a pre-hike / post-hike town to spend a day or two at: Chamonix is stunning (even though it is super -touristic); so I recommend it. In addition: I strongly recommend the cable-car to Aiguille-du-midi and on-wards to Italy (to Pointe-Helbronner). It is very expensive but truly amazing.

      I'm sure I have more to say about the TMB but those are my main points (that come to mind right now). I have a whole blog I've written back in 2010 on my TMB experience but it is in Hebrew ... lol And anyway my info is out-dated (to walk without pre-booking today is un-heard-of). We had another spot that was flat that we could have taken. It was close to someone else’s tent so we were trying to figure out who the tent belonged to because we didn’t want to be rude when we were offered to share the site with the people we had previously met. The camp was not full but most of the good spots were taken. I think people are always willing to help each other out and would try to accommodate you if there was a way to fit you in. In this area in particular, you are only allowed to camp at Marlette or hike 5.5 miles further to North Canyon campground but there was no need to hike further.
