I camped in 20 degrees farenheit with a foam pad and a 0° F bag. I also wore a fleece sweater but found myself opening the bag slightly to cool off! I also covered my face in a blanket. It was surreal waking up in a thick layer of frost!
My 12 year old daughter and I just went backpacking with hammocks (3 nights, 55 miles) for the first time. Even though I did ALL 3 of those things you bring up wrong, it was still a better experience than I've had in a tent. Around here if the ground is good you're on a slope and if it's flat you're dealing with lava rocks and scrub oak grit. This allowed us to find a spot just about anywhere we wanted to with a minimum of preparations. I also loved that I could pack camp by shoving everything into a bag. Now that I've seen a couple of your videos, I cannot wait to go out and do it right.
The best part of it all is experiencing the great outdoors with our children. I just got back from a trip with my son. You take her along as much as you can, They grow up so fast. But by investing in the time with her now. She will still want to go with you 21 years from now, like my son. Thank you for watching Al. I really appreciate it.
Nice concise video, the following is what this newbie learned. Thanks! -) 68 degrees is when you can start getting chilled in a uninsulated hammock. -) A underquilt goes under the hammack to provide un-compressed insulation. there are hammocks with a insulation-pad pocket. -) Lay in the hammock asymmetrically instead of banana-style. -) 12 to 17 feet between trees to give a 30 degree strap config as measured with finger-trick. -) A ridge line should just be taut, I need to try this to hang stuff above me. -) and from comments, ventilation is a big plus, but - to limit chill, limit airflow. -) hang low enough to sit, double hammock over to make more comfy
I love how he says "göose" and "comphy". Very informative video! Never knew I was hanging up my hammock wrong even though I've been hammock camping for a good handful of years.
I recently got a hammock and tarp combination because it enables me to do bike tours with my road bike since everything is so lightweight these days! This shed some much appreciated light one some questions i had, thank you sir!
I slept in a mesh rope hammock, inside my house, for three months during the summer of 1988. AC was out, and I was between jobs, so I needed to improvise to get any sleep until I got money to fix the AC. Anyway, I disagree that there is only one way (asymmetric) to sleep. I am normally a side sleeper, which was my only concern before committing to the hammock, but I was surprised. I never slept better than banana position in the hammock.
@@dchall8 I’m still sleeping in my hammock! Summers I have a fan pointed towards me and under the hammock. Winters I use an under quilt. Still the best sleep I’ve ever had
I love learning new things. And there is a lot of people that are coming up with new ideas. We have to make sure that we are sharing them. Thank you for watching sir.
Now they using them as a inside liner, for winter jackets. I have one of those jackets and it is my warmest jacket. Thank you David for watching. I really appreciate it.
Thank you so much! We had a hammock growing up and I've always had fond memories associated with it. Having bought a hammock with a built-in insect netting a few years ago, I only recently started to use it. Your exellent explanations and demonstrations were easy to understand and will come into use when we build a hammock hitch assembly for the truck!
I'm really intrigued by the tip about folding the edge of the hammock back when sitting in 'chair mode.' That one's new to me. I'll have to give that a try! Thanks for sharing some good tips!
When you fold it over. It becomes a nice flat comfortable chair. Especially if you are using it to cook. Thank you for watching and your comment Nathan Sharp.
I just saw a video about a dual layer hammock. That looks to solve the pad sliding around during the night. I tried the "proper way" to sleep in a hammock and it's not for me as I am a side sleeper. I've had my best sleep in a hammock once I get the pad set right. I did learn from your video about the fold in for sitting. I will try that next time, thanks.
I am a side sleeper and get the best night of sleeping in a hammock. The problem that a lot of people have is that their hammock is too short. But a double layer hammock is the best for people that use pads. Thank you Lordfubar1 for watching. I really appreciate it.
I would not have thought I needed to be taught how to lie in a hammock BUT I DID. This was exactly the problem I was having and I am so glad to have this very simple fix. SO helpful.
Appreciate the video. I've spent the night in my fishing net hammock at home many times and the offset sleeping position came natural. Going on a 100 mile canoe trip on the Manistee in MI next month, anticipating mid 40's + at night there for mid September. Thought the down sleeping bag would work, will be working with alternatives instead. Thanks for serving this Great Nation brother !!! Father of a fine sailor here, hauls Jarheads around on an amphibious assault ship lol.
This video has everything that I need to know, 3 week ago I slept in a hammock because my friend forgot her tent I give mine to her, good thing I had the hammock,, I couldn't belive it in the morning I had the best night ever Very well rested no back pain nothing, exept my butt freezing!!! But it was the best, I'm trying hammock camping next saturday so I need to doit right,,, Thanks for all the good tips!!
Well not if you get the little blow up ones. Blow that bad boy up and there ya go. Then when it's time to go take the air out roll it up tight and there ya go 😉 Ps. I know you were kinda joking around... But being right at the same time
If I had the room I would take 2 pillows with me but I use a small 5l backpack witch has enough room for my tarp, hammock, small sleeping bag, ropes, food, water and a few other things lol
Just getting into hammock camping, planning a Boundary Waters trip with my dad this fall, so I'm learning everything I can from experienced people like yourself in order to be prepared. As my amazing father, a retired Marine, would say: Proper Prior Planning Prevents Piss-poor Performance. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and wisdom. Semper Fi
Thanks for all the great info! 95% of my hammocks were Hatteras type hammocks with a huge lawn stand, and a very inexpensive and dangerous! nylon with screen sewn in hammock used to camp in the snow in Yosemite in Oct! Brrrrrr. Knowing more would have saved me a fall when that zipper broke on the net attached to the nylon! And my butt wouldn't have frozen off if I had even heard about under quilts! Even then, when I retreated to my tent, I knew then that I wanted to switch a hammock to get off the ground! Since then, I want one to sleep in in my home and camp in, and your vid just opened up my world! Saved me from making more hammock mistakes and taught me so much! (Esp. the hammock hanging angle!!! and buying a wide enough hammock to sleep diagonally! TYSM!
@@AdventureswiththeMarine . Well the good news is that I didn’t fall out of it once it was set up. The other was the figure of 8 knots I tied held me securely at the level I placed it. So all in all a great success! I got chilly at about 03:30. Nothing a jacket wouldnt sort & I awoke just on 05:00.
Excellent video, you answered questions I didn't even know I had yet! We got a common, everyday dude with some basic knowledge he wants to share with the rest of us. Not trying to be funny, not trying to be famous, not trying to be pretty, just trying to help us out. Now I'm really looking forward to getting my hammock up properly and enjoying the best night of sleep of my life! Thank you so much!
Have a great time with your kids. They grow up so fast. So spend as much time as you can with them. Thank you Gard for watching. I really appreciate it.
I have that same pad and have been using it for hammock camping for over a decade. Works great. Below freezing, I add another pad with my 20 deg. sleeping bag. Works great. I have no desire to switch to an underquilt. But I sleep hot. My buddy who has blood circulation problems switched to an underquilt and still uses a 0 deg. bag in below freezing temps. I use a breathable bivvy sack in the case of cold winds in cold temps. I find hammocks so much more comfy for sleeping than in a tent with even a 3" inflatable pad.
Three years ago I made a shocking change. Bought a wood frame stand with cotton hammock. Been sleeping in it since. No more tossing, turning and always a refreshing sleep. Save money from buying bed set and linens.
There is a person who is designing hiking poles that can be used to suspend a hammock. It may already be on the market. Video demonstrating it... ruclips.net/video/2kPvSn5_T58/видео.html
It will depend on the exact environment but....All you need is 2 tripods and a ridge pole to rig up for hanging. Or use it as a ground tent too...just cuz it’s a hammock doesn’t mean you have to hang it.
Finding 2 suspension anchors is problem #1. In the desert you might hike when it's cooler in the early morning or at night and sleep during the day, problem #2 is you'll need a tarp to provide shade .
My dad has a canvas hammock on a stand that I sleep in when I visit. He has a small house with no guest room but the hammock is set up in the living room. It's inside, but winter in the north in a room that isn't well heated is still chilly so I have a sleeping bag under me and a blanket over. I either sleep at a diagonal or nearly sitting up with my upper body pretty high in the hammock and my legs at the lowest part folded up butterfly style.
Love the advice on how to lay in a hammock, I've gone Hammock Camping several times and I've always sleep better than I did when I would lay on the ground, but laying in it at an angle takes it to a whole new level of comfort
I swear, the first time i slept in one i slept for like 8-9 hours straight! Just try and keep it to rum and not beer, when its a pain to get out of in the middle of the night to have a piss :D
I slept in a diagonal hammock instead of a bed a combined 24 months over the last 18 year's. Put two big eyebolts in the walls of a 1 room apartment and used that instead of a bed. In the morning,it goes into a basket and I had my whole room instead of one piece of furniture taking up all my space.
I just went camping and made 2 of the mistakes. Cold butt and banana! Wish I watched this before I left. I have a 0 degree bag and thought I’d be fine as it has always been great on the ground with a pad. But nope, next time I’ll bring another bag and hang it like you said and lay in it at an angle and I should be good!
Good advice for campers who start using a hammock. Something a new person never thinks of and just one of many benefits of a hammock ...360 degree ventilation. I like to use a Therm-a-rest mummy shaped self inflating mattress in my hammock. I have it about 1/2 to 3/4 inflated so it will conform to my body and the hammock. It does not need to be fully inflated since you are not sleeping on the ground with roots , pine cones , pebbles or anything poking you in the backside. By the way on that rare occasion if you ever have to use your hammock as a solo tent the mattress is already with you. Here in Florida I have only used a under quilt a couple of times. You mentioned a double layer hammock. One great invention and for insects a nightmare. Mosquitoes have never bitten me threw a double bottom hammock but feasted on me in a single layer one. I'm referring to hammocks with a built in ( top ) bug netting which leaves the bottom exposed. Not the hammock which has netting surrounding them. "The Ultimate Hang " that's one book everyone should read. . I have been hammock camping for over 60 years and I learned a lot from it.
Chuck, you are right about the mattress. I filmed this video at a State Park near my home. When I came to the part about the mattress. I realized I left it at home. But I did forget the point about the protection of a double layer hammock from biting insects. That can be a big plus for people that may have those situations. I wished I would have remembered to mention that. Thank you for your great comments.
I got a hammock for xmas I have not tried yet, its Norwegian winter here right now so I think I will wait until spring. But I have a question for you, I am a fan of woolen blankets and I use 100% wool army blankets and they give me a comfortable sleep even if its a bit chill outside. How do you think a woolen blanket will behave in a hammock, it should not lose any function since it cant be compressed much?
It is really great to see how many good ideas are in forums. i am a producer of a bamboobased fabric, created a brand with a new kind of real multipurpose hammock. The aahhhyeaahhh Hammock www.arya.is. Sorry website is not very quick ... has to be renewed. It is so difficult to show the softness of my material - you would like to touch. I was so lucky that Derek Hensen wrote about my hammock. It is really difficult to get known by people especially when the marketing and promotion is not running. Especially when working alone. Here is a link to Derek Hensen´s Ultimate Hang online book with my hammock. theultimatehang.com/2016/09/28/ar•ya-hammock-review/ You have some ideas to promote my fine product let me know. Or post my link to people where you think they can like it. Sorry for interrupting you. I was just so impressed by your positive writing mentality.... bye
Had my Warbonnet XLC for about 5 years. I agree with everything you mentioned here. Shug got me interested and The Ultimate Hang comes highly recommend. Thank you for your post.
I don't have a hammock, I don't plan to get a hammock any time soon yet I watched it and I must say, this was an incredibly informative video. The majority of it wasn't helpful to someone so casual as myself, but that last tip and a half. There's always someone smarter/better than you at something, and for me today, that thing is laying in a hammock.
This is a great video, the tips are so helpful. As a single mom i take my kids camping every summer in the national parks, and we love our hammocks!! Lol. One thing about the national parks tho is the rangers check all the straps on the hammocks to make sure they are designed, certified proper tree straps. That rained on our parade that year as we had to take them down, but I was very prepared the next year. I can see you camp off the beaten path, just thought I'd mention it as it may be useful to someone else. : )) 🎣⛺
@@anothersomebody8195 I would suggest getting them just in case. They may or may not ask, but if they do you'll be prepared. I found mine on amazon, but see them at sporting shops also.
@@AdventureswiththeMarine it went absolutely great. I slept for 9 hours! Used a reindeerskin as a layer beneath my sleeping bag, and as soon as I closed my eyes,, with the hammock swaying calmly, I fell asleep :)
Great video! I’ve been using a hammock for the last three years and love it. The best sleep I’ve ever had in the woods. I started with a nine foot long hammock (because it was cheap and had a built in bug net) and found that there is a ratio of height to length of hammock (I’ve found about twice my height is a good length). So I purchased a twelve foot hammock, let the kids use the first hammock and haven’t looked back (I bought an additional bug net for the longer hammock). The only thing I noticed you didn’t mention was using an inflatable pillow. I’ve used one in both hammocks and really like the additional support for my head even in an asymmetrical or cross body lay.
I am doing a video series called The Beginners Guide to Hammock and Hammock Camping. I think episode 6 will be about ways to get comfortable in a hammock. For the head and the legs. I like how you adapted from a 9 foot ( which is way to small for most adults ) to a longer hammock. Very wise. Thank you for watching.
Thank you for taking the time to make this very well articulated video regarding this obscure subject, never thought I'd be thinking about sleeping in a hammock until I realized I might remain unemployed till retirement thanks to COVID-19. Again, cheers!
Thank you. I have had so many "DUH!" moments listening to your instruction. I hope I have the brains to remember how to fold the hammock over to make it user-friendly.
My 11 year old got a hammock for his birthday. He and dad could not figure out how to hang it correctly. The boy sat and watched this video and ran out the door. Thank you! He got it!
That is so great to hear. He is our future in hammocking, in the the great outdoors. If he is interested in learning more about hammocks and hammock camping. I did a sires of videos called: How to hammocks. A beginners guide. Thank you Lissa Lissa and your son for watching. I really appreciate it.
It dropped to 27°F when I was out camping in june! and all I had was a cheap wool camp blanket... needless to say I "creeked" when I got up in the morning. But at least I know my fire skills are on point.
Hah, I took one up in the mountains in the winter... I had a 0° mummy bad and it was still cold. You must have felt like the liquid terminator in the pool of nitrogene
new sub my friend, I'm a avid hammock camper and have tested many lays and winter layers. your advice will help most people using super wide and long hammocks hanging at 30 degrees which has been taught this is the proper way to lay in a hammock. ..bill
I started sleeping in a hammock in my home because of back pain. I don't wake up crippled anymore! And yes, I'm often a side sleeper. It's going on 5 years now. I use a second hammock with a down comforter under my sleeping hammock, for warmth. I truly can't sleep without pain in a bed anymore. So glad I found this solution for my back. I suggest it to everyone who suffers pressure point pain when reclining.
That is a great testimony for people like myself. Who suffers from back pain. I hope people will read this. Thank you for sharing that Sherri-Lynn Hewat. I really appreciate that.
Called Walmart one day, and asked if the sold "hammocks" they said please hold sir...10 minuets later they answered with...no sir we don't sell "ham hocks" OMG Lol
Thanks ,I went out to a rwo day music festival and did all the mistakes , now got a poncho/ underbag for warmth ,will be able to sit lay down properly and hang at right hight ,next time should be more enjoyable 🥰
I really like your videos! Very useful tips for hammock beginners and i really appreciate that you're giving advice on how to make relatively cheap gear like foam pads work with a hammock! I'm using a ridge rest in my single layer hammock because, for me, its just awesome to have something to sit or lie in while taking a quick break from cycling, not having to care about punctures and don't have to spend that much money on an (proper) underquilt. I tried to tackle the problem of the pad sliding around in the hammock (might upgrade on a double layer sometime) with some of this (i don't even know the correct word in german :D) fabric you put under carpets so that they don't slide around. Just put it some patches of it in the hammock under the pad and it prevents from sliding.
i love my hammock but i have to use a rubber band to prevent it from swining... and omg the imperial system... Thank you so much for the very usefull tips!
I found that very useful. I've just purchased a hammock. Been wild camping for some years but never used a hammock. I look forward to the hammock adventures. Many thanks. Mark
I'm sure your right. I will of course be filming so you';; be able to see if subbed - not a sale by the way. I did sub you mind on account of liking your channel. Peace!
Thanks for the nice Video... I spent a month in a chinchorro in Venezuela... super comfortable when used the right way! Now instead, that we are going to Sweden for a forest hike, I was wondering how to cope with the opposite problem... cold... Thanks a lot for your tips!!
Because the hammock is suspended in the open, where circulating air ( convection ) robs heat from all around. This is beneficial in the summer, but lousy when it's cold. That is why you will need insulation underneath you. The best way is a under quilt. But they can be quite expensive. Otherwise a close foam mat will work. I have done other videos on how to stay warm. Please check them out. Thank you Ragnarok Sub for watching. i really appreciate it.
I hang two hammocks, nice nylon slippery one on the inside. Put the yoga mat in the middle (inbetween both hammocks) for insulation. $5 from Kmart yoga mat. My outside hammock is just a cotton south american type. You can innovate, its not hard, dont spend a fortune. I also used a sleeping bag with the yoga mat inside it as an inner lining. Got sleeping bag for $6 from the charity second hand store.
I think that is really cool that you are being creative and coming up with ideas that are inexpensive. Keep on improvising and thank you for your comment. Great info.
@Backpacking With a Hammock. Is there a way to be safe from bears if you sleep in a hammock out in a national park other than with bear spray? A young guy has a company in the Netherlands or Germany that designed & sells a device that you put on your bike that can attach around an electric pole, so you can raise your bike via remote control, higher than anyone can reach, to protect it from theft. Some kind of mobile temporary treehouse would be nice for in a tree, with a flat surface for sleeping on and an inner and outer memory foam mattress to help grip the tree and bungee cords to attach to the trunk and branches. Now that I think of it, some kind of carbon fiber bike powered teardrop camper that you could anchor with stakes in the ground, would probably be much better, and too strong for an animal to break into.
P.S., I just saw one of those Animal Planet or similar specials about animal attacks, about a young couple with a baby who went camping, and were all sleeping in a tent on the ground, even though their car or SUV was parked less than 20 feet away. While sleeping, a bear attacked them right through their tent and nearly killed the guy. The husband was fighting for some time with some assistance from the wife, getting seriously cut up and torn apart to some degree, by the bear, before finally getting into his car. You better have a couple cans of bear spray in special Velcro flapped holders near hand's reach before sleeping in a hammock outside, in or near bear country.
@@valerieann8007 Its too bad this comment is 2 years old, I have so many questions. Like where were they, what kindof bear was it, was their food inside their tent? I camp in the Adirondacks alot, and I get nervous about bears, but I don't know any one or have myself experienced a bear even attacking a food cooler let alone people. Brown bear though I've always heard are less aggressive than grizzlys or black bear.
When first bought my ENO over ten years ago.I would lay in it like a banana and would be uncomfortable with in minutes. Then I would move diagonally till I was comfortable. My foot would hang out a little, but I was comfortable. I really don't know why hammock makers don't throw in a little paper with instruction with there hammocks. Thanks for that nice comment.
I used to live in mexico and there wasn't a mattress in 150 miles. I have a ruptured disk at L4-L5 and I slept in a hammock for three years. He is rite about laying at an angle, you are perfectly flat. Never buy a knotted hammock no matter how small the thread is you will feel every one of them. get a woven one or cloth like his.
Before hammocks I'd bring my sheep skin with me out instead of a sleeping pad. I find that just bringing my reindeer or sheep skin works better than any pad because you can't really compress it to a point where it loses it's insulation. With that said, I do live in Scandinavia and it can get kind of cold while camping in Norway (I'm actually from Denmark, but we go there during winters because Norway is gorgeous), so a hide won't always be enough during winters here and I made my own under-quilt from a sleeping bag. I still bring the hide, the only downside to a hide is the weight. But if you're strong it's not really an issue because you can use the sheep or reindeer skin to warm yourself when you're walking or sitting around the fire. My Icelandic sheep skin is good to down around 20 fahrenheit (below -6 degrees celsius) if I use a tarp and an appropriate sleeping bag. Location can also have something to do with it. If you can, I would recommend giving it a go. If you're all about that ultra-light life, it's not for you.
I do have a sheep skin that I lay on inside my hammock during the winter time. Mine is just a little small. I wish I would of bought a larger one. I am seeing more and more people up in the northern part of the USA starting to use them. The reason for that is that they work well. You are right that they may be on the heavier side. But worth the weight.I also liked what you said about being strong. Thank you for the info and thank you for watching Peteru Avertis..
Great idea for deer hunters to experiment using the hide from hunting. I can only imagine with some help from others on the Internet, that a hide that might get tossed could become a useful bedding item.
Hey, are there any Dane specific sagas that you know about that read well in English (some of the sagas don’t translate well or are boring, and thanks to a TBI in 2003 too many boring pages in a row cause me to put down a book and never pick it up again)? Good info on the hide. (EDIT): for warmest use, fur in or fur out, or does it not matter? Where in Norway do you recommend for a person to go for car camping when I show up (I may be on my way to Sweden to the school to take a class at Gränsfors Bruk). Have a great day. (EDIT): PS. While I’m in Scandinavia, where should I look for a high quality sheep hide that won’t cost a lot?
Nothing is better then using an all natural Fur pelt especially because it is designed to endor the elements as if the animal is still alive and works perfectly inside or out depending on the weather.
I'd also like to add, it's a good idea to put sticks between the strap and the tree, so there's minimal strain on the tree and less damage, so the strap is resting an tight around the sticks and not the trees itself
I admit:I did NOT know how to lay properly in a hammock, or, when actually laying propperly in one, how to prevent my butt from getting cold. Thing is - neither do I own a hammock nor do i plan on purchasing one and yet , as far as i know my brain, i will not be able to unknow this information.... ever again and will, when propperly drunk, share it with other, none-hammock owning, people. Considering the limited storing capacity of the human brain, i would say it's a bad thing but i am not entirely sure - it's just odd. maybe i should watch it a second time and protocol how often he says hammock ..seems like a reasonable idea.
Talk about a whole lotta waste. So you watched it for no reason ok n and your gonna watch it again for no reason. I think you LOVED this video. It's your favorite.
That's the best kind of info. Stuff you didn't want to know but know you may want one day. And when that day comes, you'll be ready. Watch it again, just to be sure :D
i dont think a human brain has limited storing capacity,i feel the opposite to be true. the more you information you store, the more you can store. by watching a hammock video you improved your mental powers.
Sporting1210 if it permanently takes up some of our limited space then we might as well make use of it rather than waste the information. Life led you to this resource in order to apply it to your life journey
I watched this video two times. First long before I got a hammock and then shortly after I got one. At first I wasen‘t impressed und didn‘t pay attention. But this is actually gold. Thanks for the tips!
I had a cold night sleeping at Horsepens 40 in the early spring and it got down to about 36 degrees during the night. I was camping with a down sleeping bag that I used as an under quilt underneath my hammock, and the only problem i ran into was my head was slightly exposed at the top. Needless to say, I woke up from the cold, and my head was about as cold as a piece of ice. I’ve never been so pissed off in my whole life. Motto of the story? Buy a real underquilt that fits the entire length of the hammock, and make sure it doesn’t have any holes that will let in the cold. You’ll be happy you made the investment.
I just found your channel this was a great video super helpful. New subscriber. I can’t wait to check out your other videos. I live in South Central Missouri and I’m looking forward to backpacking the Ozark Trail with the hammock. Be blessed my friend and have a merry Christmas. John
I wish I was an expert at lying in a hammock. I would really take my work seriously and dedicate a lot of time testing the equipment... I would even do it in my own time after hours... because that's the sort of hard working guy I am.
I wonder... if you made a very wide hammock do you think you could lay across it at a 90 degree angle to normal? You would lay completely straight that way I would think?
I keep seeing myself, sideways like him, then scootch sideways a little more, then just a little bit more, then WHAM! I'm upside down on the ground, feet twisty tied above me, comfortably 'asleep'.
+Backpacking with a hammock-- Many years ago I remember seeing a rope hammock that was very wide in the village of Woodstock in upstate NY. You could lay across it sideways, flat. I belive it was called a Yucatan Hammock.
This would have helped me so much four years ago when I first started hammock camping. XD since then I've learned so much. I kinda disagree on the UQ stuff, but comfort levels vary from person to person. I've slept down to 40*F with literally nothing but my hammock and a tarp. Below that I add a Thermarest XLite and cuccoon a sleeping bag around my hammock so it's kind of like a mix between UQ and TQ. Back to the 40*, No sleeping bag or mat or anything. I sleep in long johns, a hoodie, and thick wool socks. I hang with my butt literally three inches off the ground. I pitch my tarp where it is just a few inches from my face. I curl up in a ball in the bottom of my hammock. Then I chunk a Nalgene in my stuff sack attached to my hammock, flip it over myself, cuccoon myself up, and I'm warm. Slept who knows how many nights like that. My hammock is the Hummingbird Single, 10' (5oz) and the tarp is the Hummingbird Heron (11oz). My sleeping pad is 2.8 rated, and the sleeping bags I use depend on the temperature, the coldest I've gone to is 18*F.
Comfort levels definitely depends on person to person. I am a warm sleeper. Runner, who comes with me on my trips, is a cold sleeper. When he gets cold, I will encourage him to put on another layer of fleece. Now that we will be in sub-zero temperatures. Wool is my favorite layer.
That hammock is 11 feet long. 70 inches wide. I think that is really cool that you made your own hammock. Keep on innovating and improvising. And thank you for watching NellfromPR.
I have been hammock camping for 3 years and I never figured out why I couldn’t get super comfy. I would put my hammock up super tight and made it so you can’t sit in it. I never thought to lay in it diagonally. Thanks!!!
More entertaining to play “Hi Bob.” Simple game, watch Bob Newhart show reruns, take shot every time someone says, “Hi Bob.” Bob is funnier than this guy.
I camped in 20 degrees farenheit with a foam pad and a 0° F bag. I also wore a fleece sweater but found myself opening the bag slightly to cool off! I also covered my face in a blanket. It was surreal waking up in a thick layer of frost!
That sounds crazy XDD
I would like to try that myself
Thank you for sharing that The Lumberjack. I really appreciate it.
That sounds fun!
Definitely the Wow factor.
Canadian military had a 80's cold weather hood that's fantastic for winter use and less frost!
i clicked on this video for a laugh thinking "oh, how hard can it be to lay in a hammock" but damn!! It was actually really informative man.
Thank you for watching Person. I really do appreciate it.
You right, same thing happened to me
Wasted a lot of my time! It's a hundred degrees here 8 months of the year. I'm trying to get cool, not warm!

Now that I've seen a couple of your videos, I cannot wait to go out and do it right.
The best part of it all is experiencing the great outdoors with our children. I just got back from a trip with my son. You take her along as much as you can, They grow up so fast.
Andrew, you got. Now you are ahead of the game.
Also, there is no wrong way to lay in a hammock when drunk.
But remember, you'll be sober in the morning. And feeling the hammock and the night that morning as well.
But let's be honest, you're 100% right.

That is great to hear. I get my best night of sleeping in a hammock. Thank you for watching Kloe Lind. i really appreciate itr.
Im a seasoned hammock camper, but I still learned something new here. That folding the hammock for sitting part, at the end, brilliant! Thanks.
I love learning new things. And there is a lot of people that are coming up with new ideas. We have to make sure that we are sharing them. Thank you for watching sir.
Me too for the type of hammock in the video. For backpacking I use a warbonnet balckbird which sit perfectly without doing the fold over.

Thank you so much! We had a hammock growing up and I've always had fond memories associated with it. I'm really intrigued by the tip about folding the edge of the hammock back when sitting in 'chair mode.' That one's new to me. I'll have to give that a try!

Thanks for all the great info! 95% of my hammocks were Hatteras type hammocks with a huge lawn stand, and a very inexpensive and dangerous! nylon with screen sewn in hammock used to camp in the snow in Yosemite in Oct!

You TOTALLY forgot the 4th Big Mistake... People taking a hammock to go hiking in the desert. ; )
Now that would be a big mistake.
Most deserts in this country are semi-arid and have something to hang on...
Thank you for sharing that Breyer123. Good stuff.

Thank you Brian for sharing that and watching. I really appreciate it.

This is a great video, the tips are so helpful. As a single mom i take my kids camping every summer in the national parks, and we love our hammocks!! Lol. One thing about the national parks tho is the rangers check all the straps on the hammocks to make sure they are designed, certified proper tree straps.

Great info.
Yep great idea. Thanks!
ENO should make it mandatory for all of their hammock customers to watch this video. :-)
They should also make their hammocks longer
@Reno Simpson could you provide a link or something? Google didn't like my searches
chrthiel I’m 6’3, 250 and fit just fine in my double nest eno
Whistler,
What ever happened to Personal Freedom...? !
Got my first gathered in hammock recently. Had two problems. You answered both. Thank you.
Thank you for watching Brian Backpacking and Bushcraft. I really appreciate it.
Thank you for watching and sharing that great comment rbodell. I really appreciate it.
@rbodell. I lived in Mexico City for over a year and they had very comfortable mattresses everywhere.
Thanks for your advice :)
First time anybody ever addressed my problem of the edge of the hammock cutting into my legs.. Thank you !!!!! lol
You bet! Thank you Plain 'Ole Chuck for watching. I really appreciate it.
I'd also like to add, it's a good idea to put sticks between the strap and the tree, so there's minimal strain on the tree and less damage, so the strap is resting an tight around the sticks and not the trees itself
Thank you jake boss for sharing that great info.
Well Thank you, now am Really not going to be able to unknow this stuff
This is full of great info for a beginner hammock camper like myself!!!
Glad it was helpful! thank you Passin_thru for watching. I really appreciate it.
"Boy I can feel My butt getting warm right now"
Same
Prrrrrrrrrrrrrrp - or should that be Ffffffffffffffffft
It's hard work being lazy.
I agree.
🤣😃😂😁😀😄 so funny
Landrew0 excuse me, but after reading your post I must go find a hammock to sleep in.
Landrew0 it is
No zActly not
I watched this video two times. First long before I got a hammock and then shortly after I got one. At first I wasen‘t impressed und didn‘t pay attention. But this is actually gold. Thanks for the tips!
Great to hear! Thank you for watching. Twice. I really appreciate it.
"I can fall asleep right now. Watch me fall asleep right now" * closes eyes @9:40
Putting your pack in the hammock once it's up, makes it more stable to install sleeping pad or adding insulation.
I'm from the poor side of town i got two cheap sleeping bags and put one inside the other with a wool blanket underneath ..Great vid.
You should try a Under Quilt. But they are expensive. But a great investment if you like hammock camping.
Or wear a hat
@@brucecorson9167 Even wearing a wool beanie, it was colder than a witches tit in a brass bra. Hats mean jack shit when the wind is blowing 20mph.
Great video, for me - a total hammock nube. Cheers.
Thank you for watching and your comment Sterling Archer. I really appreciate it.
Thanks I’ve watched a few different hammock videos but you gave an extra couple of tips
Thank you Tinlizzyism for watching. I really appreciate it.
I just found your channel this was a great video super helpful. New subscriber. I can’t wait to check out your other videos. I live in South Central Missouri and I’m looking forward to backpacking the Ozark Trail with the hammock. Be blessed my friend and have a merry Christmas. John
Thank You John for watching and you have a Blessed Christmas.

And always check overhead for dead branches! Pine trees are notorious for this!
My new idea make electric hammocks
I wish I was an expert at lying in a hammock. I would really take my work seriously and dedicate a lot of time testing the equipment... I would even do it in my own time after hours... because that's the sort of hard working guy I am.
No expert here. Just one beggar showing another beggar where he found bread.
I wonder... if you made a very wide hammock do you think you could lay across it at a 90 degree angle to normal? You would lay completely straight that way I would think?
That is a interesting thought. I don't know of anyone who made a hammock for that and tried it.
I belive it was called a Yucatan Hammock.
nice, you are every correct, here in brazil people are very used to sleep on hammocks, but there are still people what do not know how to sleep on it.
Well said! We need to educate them. Thank you Hudsonkem Marinho for watching. I really appreciate it.
Hi from Puerto RIco.
How wide is that hammock? I made my own hammocks from canvas fabric and use it with nylon rope.
Thanks!!!
Thank you for watching and your comment Blackout PB. I really appreciate it.
Take a shot every time he says hammock
Admit it, you're just looking for an excuse, aren't you, Bill? ;)
mountainhobo lol yes

dude had me at looking for a comfortable lay! lmao =D last time ever going to watch one of these vids!
More entertaining to play “Hi Bob.”
Simple game, watch Bob Newhart show reruns, take shot every time someone says, “Hi Bob.”
Bob is funnier than this guy.
