This reminds me of Falmouth S-Cornwall I have been in 1970, what a nice place this was. I did not want to leave this gorgeous fisher town, but I had to go back to school. Thank you for this wonderful tutorial.
This is what I love about watercolour - it’s delicate and ethereal, and you have captured it beautifully. Thank you! My style tends towards realism, you’ve inspired me to try ‘loose’.

Absolutely gorgeous Karen! Love watching you paint! I love that when you list the colors of paint you are using ....you always mention what you can use as a substitute.
Another great tutorial! I love the abstract landscape and the techniques you show us! It’s beautiful! As a beginner I have trouble being loose with my painting. These methods will be helpful!
Being new to watercolours I never knew about the white wax crayon. It looks so much easier than masking fluid as you can use your natural technique when applying it instead of being so deliberately controlling with fluid. I cannot wait to try this.
I really like this one Karen. Also, this time, because the paper caught the light source I realised just HOW wet your paper was! The page was not just wet but flooded. This is important I think, as it’s not always clear just how wet the paper needs to be to get those lovely runny effects. Lesson learned. Thank you Karen.
Thanks so much Barbara! So pleased you like this tutorial and found it helpful... especially in regards to how wet the paper was... I will try to discuss this in more depth in future. Thanks so much for pointing it out 😀
I painted this today! I didn't know I could paint like this. Thank you Karen, your tutorials are so clear and easy to follow. I'm new to this and have yet to master the sparkly water effect I think I need to invest in the correct brushes too! I thoroughly enjoy your videos and I really enjoyed painting this. 😊💖
What a terrific tutorial! It's so refreshing to be challenged by some abstract techniques, really stretching our creativity; it wakes us up! .I'm anxious to try it. As always, many thanks.
I've really enjoyed your painting. One of these days I've found old pics with my family on a beach with beautiful cliffs like this. It's sthing to watch with no hurry. Thank you for your gentle approach. Hug from Brasil.

Thanks Karen for another brilliant informative tutorial....hoping to implement some of your techniques in a current painting I’m struggling with at the minute 😁
This is really pretty. I love that green color. I haven't been able to master the loose painting yet. You make it look so easy. I think I"m just not patient enough. TFS
Thanks so much Cecilia, really pleased you like this one. It is tricky loosening up your watercolours. One way is just use the back of an old painting or paint on a large scale and use bigger brushes, even a decorating brush... just to let go! Have fun :)
Your tutorial was right on time, Karen, because I’m on my way to the Oregon coast this morning! Our coast looks quite a lot like the location you used in your photo reference here. I love how accessible you make this. Your approach looks like it will really reduce any anxiety so anyone can take this scene on. And wax resist, the salt, and plastic card are such cool techniques to experiment with. Fun!! I can’t wait to give this a try with some of the photos I talk later today! Lots of love from Oregon! - Tara Kate
Thanks! Your tutorials totally changed my approach to painting. I feel like I went from "copier" to "artist". You are a fantastic teacher!
Thank you for sharing Dee! That is amazing!
Karen, you’re by far one of the best in my book.
Thank you so much!
What I like about your approach Karen is that nothing is rushed - you don't have to get things done before the paper dries.
Thank you so much 😀
Yeah it doesn't look exactly like the photograph. Guess what, it looks prettier! Love the dramatic look on it! 🌊
Thank you! I am soooo pleased you think so!!
Truly mesmerizing. Your loose landscapes are the best, Karen!.
Thank you Imma :)
This reminds me of Falmouth S-Cornwall I have been in 1970, what a nice place this was. I did not want to leave this gorgeous fisher town, but I had to go back to school. Thank you for this wonderful tutorial.
Thank you so much Ann! I am glad it has reminded you of a special place in your past! 😀
That's incredible! I've done a couple of paintings with this technique. I love it!
I fell in love with the violet in the background; it gives the whole painting that dreamy effect that I adore!
Thank you so much Tamsin, I am delighted that you think so!! 😀
This is what I love about watercolour - it’s delicate and ethereal, and you have captured it beautifully. Thank you! My style tends towards realism, you’ve inspired me to try ‘loose’.

Very precise THANKYOU it’s good to have a narrative this way. What happiness art is. To see and create. Wonderful

This painting turned out beautifully! Stunning, in fact! There is nothing I enjoy more than learning more loose watercolour techniques. Thank you!
Thank you so much 😀

It is very freeing to use wax, far less control than masking fluid, but for this style of painting ... perfect! I hope you have fun using it Glynda 😀
@@KarenRiceArt Is this a two-part tutorial? I can't see where, on this video, you applied the wax resist crayon. Thanks again for your inspiration.
I really like this one Karen. Also, this time, because the paper caught the light source I realised just HOW wet your paper was! The page was not just wet but flooded.
