The color mixing in your tutorials are inspirational. As a beginner, I tend to go with straight colors rather than mixing colors for depth. I’ll rewatch and try to follow your ideas. I love how you use salt, spattering, Brusho etc. Please keep posting your inspirational videos. I’ve learned so much and look forward to each one.
Thank you so much Betty! Really pleased you find my tutorials inspiring! So glad you found the colour mixing helpful as well! Salt, spattering and Brusho are so much fun! More tutorials to come! 😊
This has to be one of the BEST tutorials ever for new watercolor students! It covers so much in such an organized and concise way. From color mixing to the techniques of masking, salt, brusho (no plastic wrap?! haha), it's just a great tutorial. And I love the painting itself! Thank you, Karen, for sharing your awesome talent! Love your tutorials.
Oh this is so wonderful! This basic, clear direction is so helpful. Thank you. I've been discouraged because my paintings never seem to work. The simple, detailed information helps me understand and not overwork my project.
What a fun way to paint. I am not a beginner, but tend to paint detailed paintings. Sometimes, it would be great to just relax and create flow by painting wet into wet and then a few details.
Wow! What a talented person you are! Your creativity looks absolutely fabulous! Your art work reflects your delightful creative soul! Magical beauty! With a smile, Mr. Hi! :)
Beautiful work! Love the backgound and the lights on the flowers 👏👏🤩 this is one of my favourite flower landscape I've seen in a long time! 🤩🤩🌸💗🌺🌼 Thank you for sharing 🤗❤️ Marija
I struggle to follow video tutorials - I struggle with watercolour. My approach this time was to simply watch the video, make notes, pause and then start to paint. First time I finished a piece of work. Not only did I finish it, I also learned fair bit from the video. Thank you
Beautiful painting and wonderful lesson! I love your voice with such lovely light accent. I am American and you would probably hear mine. Our son was born in the UK!
Absolutely brilliant video Karen as you're calmly explains what is needs to create a lovely painting, this is planning preparation to give yourself a chance to paint a picture as you have. Enjoying your videos they are so inspiring, thankyou greatly appreciated stay safe.

I have been in a slump feeling great about my work and the last 3 months I throw most away! I just finished this tutorial and it came out pretty good I think at least it makes me feel like I I’m not wasting my time thank you
Absolutely love your art and tutorials. This painting really captured my eye and am anxious to give it a try. I've done my sketch and masking and will work on the painting tomorrow. Thank you for sharing your art and tutorials with us.
I just finished this one! (I think I've graduated from kindergarten to first grade.) It was very helpful to follow along step by step, and to force myself to slow down.
Thank you, Karen for your marvellous videos which are really inspirational. I shall certainly be trying this one. As I also do pointed pen calligraphy, I often use a dip pen for intricate masking fluid work especially for things like the grasses in this painting and ears of corn etc. You can apply pressure to the nib to form lovely pear shaped ears of corn or fine petals which look great. I use a Leonardt Crown nib mostly and these are available from Scribblers Calligraphy Supplies for less than a pound.
I’m going to try to the different washes light to darker. I’ve been an oil or acrylic painter and tend to just go for it but I love this painting and I think using the technique you are using will help to get the effect I’m loving. Thank you for the tutorial.
I simply adore this. I’m gonna try n do this cause you made it looks so simple to achieve Karen though I’m sure it’s not….but I don care, I’m for definite gonna try this step by steps ❤
I love this painting Karen and as usual your instructions are so informative - I am wondering if sometime you might do a tutorial on explaining warm and cool colors more - when on your palette , how do you know which is which or this something you just get to know ?
I love this painting. Would you be so kind to let me know what kind of W&N white gouache do you use: zinc white or permanent white? And in case of spattering?
Did you use masking fluid to cover the blossoms so that they are not catching the green color as you go over them? I realized that the blossoms are completely white after putting in the background.
Hello Ms. Rice, I have one question. I don't have masking fluid, so how would my approach to painting this scene change? Will I have to create bolder outlines or do something else? Thank you for inspiring me everyday to practice watercolor.
If you don't have masking fluid, you can wet the background but not the thistles and paint around them. If you do get paint on them, lift off or use white paint mixed with pink at the end. Hope this was helpful 😀
