      Hi Josh! That’s exactly what I did-there are a bunch of good turners on RUclips. Brian Havens is one of my favorites, though he’s not putting out content anymore. I heard that he had a brain tumor so I’m not sure if he’s still with us 😕. Also Sam Angelo (Wyoming Woodturner) and Mike Waldt and Shawn from Worth the Effort Woodworking have some good videos for us beginners, and of course there are many others. I took a 4 hour class with a turner I know from art fairs but aside from that I’m learning as I go. But I’m definitely having a blast and I’m so glad that you guys are hanging out with me! 😊

    Nice turning Lisa, I've been turning for over 50 years and until a couple of years ago had never turned a white pine burl until I had a commission on a 28" diameter one that came from Vermont for a lady who wandered by a show I was doing near by here in the Adirondacks, interestingly it was nondescript almost boring compared to most burls but the lady liked it and it smelled good also very stable with nearly no distorting after setting several weeks; good tip on the shellac application to stabilize the weak fibers. Glad you enjoy turning although there's not much money in it but its been my stress relief dealing with life's challenges and afforded me the opportunity to make friends the world over.

    • @LisaRamlow
      @LisaRamlow  4 года назад +1

      Hi Michael, ditto on all the things you said! Although 28” diameter is nearly twice the size I’m even capable of turning on my lathe, let alone comfortable. That must have been something!

    I just finished two bowls from a pine log given to me by a neighbor. Despite very sharp tools, I still had plenty of of sanding to do and actually had to start with 60 grit in places....and what seemed like an eternity later, I finally finished up at 400 grit. I won't wait so long to use the sanding sealer next time to stiffen those wood fibers up....assuming I ever turn pine again;-) Great work and thanks for sharing.

      Tear out in soft wood is no fun, but I am happy I finished it. I still have the other half of this burl so I’ll do something with that, and I see a pretty big patch of soft torn out grain so it’ll be a challenge 😬

    RUclips tracked me and suggested this video. Glad they did that. Suggestion... When you have punky wood or tear out, turn to just before your final shape then coat it with Minwax Wood Hardener. Waite 24 hours. Turn to final shape then finish the way you want. Works like a champ. I use it for turning end grain also. I'll be starting to make videos here in a couple of weeks. Glad I ran in to you. Keep turning and stay safe.

      Hi Helen! I would agree, Pine would not generally be one of my preferred turning woods (alrhough Norfolk Island Pine is supposed to be lovely to work with) but with this being a burl, I was happy to give it a shot. The end grain seems to want to tear out more so than in hardwoods with tighter grain, so you are right 😊 thanks for watching

    Doesn't look like any of our white pine down south, but that could be because it was a burl. I've never had the opportunity to work with a burl yet. What the heck do I know :) Looks pretty dry wood as well based on the shavings coming off of it. Nice work !

    • @LisaRamlow
      @LisaRamlow  4 года назад

      Hi Phillip! I really don’t have a clue as to the species except that it is definitely a conifer. The bark was really pretty smooth and that’s unlike any pine, spruce, or fir I’ve seen, but you’re right - everything about a burl is a little weird 😉. Thanks for watching!

  • @bryanharrison3889
    @bryanharrison3889 Год назад

    That pine looks super DUPER soft... What I would have personally done is I would have hit the dovetail piece at the base with some thin CA glue, let it cure, then do a second coat so that when you put it in the chuck there's something stiff to bite. Its a cautionary step more tahn anything but I love turning pine, so sadly I've had many a piece go flying so I started doing that and it has definitely reduced the risk of the piece going full peter pan.

    • @LisaRamlow
      @LisaRamlow  Год назад

      I have had several pieces Peter Pan on me, but I turn relatively slowly and they usually just bounce off behind the lathe 😂. This was soft and I still have the other half- I’m thinking it was a spruce burl

    I have a couple of oak burls that I cut from a living tree. They were out on a limb, so I just pruned the limb to get the burls. They are very wet. Would you recommend turning them wet and then letting them dry and finishing later? Or do you think it’s better to allow them to dry out before turning? I tried turning a chunk of the limb, but it split badly. I’m brand new at this. Thanks for your videos. I do enjoy the voiceover.

    • @LisaRamlow
      @LisaRamlow  4 года назад

      Hi Julia, thanks for watching! I also tried some branches and had the same issues. I also cut some walnut limbs and sealed the ends with AnchorSeal but they are all useless - the pitch being there just doesn’t seem to work well for small to medium sized limbs.
      The oak burls I have were cut off a standing trunk in June of this year I think. The tree was living until the loggers came through so they were also very wet. I coated the cut sides in AnchorSeal and let them be for a while. I took the smallest and roughed it out a little bit, then let it air dry a while and then put it in the dishwasher kiln for a week or two I think. I wasn’t too worried about cracks because I knew this one was going to need resin as I couldn’t get a full tenon without losing most of the burl. The others are still just air drying though I think when I have time I may try to rough out some blanks to spend up the process. You can turn them wet, and if you get them thin and even enough they might not crack. They will likely warp, but that not necessarily a bad thing - lots of people like the sort of organic feel of bowls that are a bit warped and wanky. Maybe you could do like I did and try one wet and one dry? It’s really hard to say what will happen since every species is different and with the wild grain patterns in the burls, I’m not sure there’s any way to really predict how they will react.

  • @alanq64

      Hi there! I’m. It actually sure-I would say the whole bowl could be considered a live edge since the rim is the natural shape of the top of the burl, it is just lacking bark. 😊

      Hi Scott, thanks for stopping by. I’ve been using Alumilite and Liquid Diamonds to date.
