    That looks amazing! Don’t be to hard on yourself about sneaking up on the inside dimensions. A little to far and not only do you lose all the time and effort you’ve invested, but also that beautiful piece of burl. The concept of measure twice, cut once doesn’t just apply to flat work.

    Your decisions to do your own changes were clearly successful. A flat grain plug could stress the small cracks by expansion, but an end-grain plug adds nothing--it’s part of the rest of the beautiful wood. Colored epoxy treatment of the cracks was especially successful!! Thanks for your video (and the gray hair looks beautiful).

    I love how woodturners are very honest with how they approach their projects... Well most of us anyway. You calling the instructions, "Destructions" is exactly what I do. My kids look at me weird every time. Now that they are old enough to help, they too understand why they are destructions.
    That piece is beautiful, I've wanted to try those mug kits myself, but I'm a little too new to turning. Maybe if I win yours, It will inspire me to get one going myself. Looking forward to your next video.

      Hi Andy, thanks so much for watching. I have to admit this project was one of the tougher ones I’ve done, mainly due to the hollowing. I don’t have a hollowing system, my carbide cutter was dull, and my bowl scraper wasn’t long enough to reach into the bottom so I struggled. But in the end I’m thrilled with how it turned out 😊

    Beautiful piece Lisa. You’re a real trooper you don’t give up you persist and the end result speak for itself great job. I have a small safety tip for you should consider. Do not wear rings on your fingers when wood turning, because sometimes when you put you hand on the wood or when you’re sanding the ring could catch and do serous injury to your finger.
    Wouldn’t want you to get hurt.
    Keep up the great turnings.

    I love your work Lisa, my turning is somewhere between yours and Phil Anderson's so I guess I have a split personality. If that shirt ever has pups I'd love one, I hate cities. The bush is where I have lived for the past 30+ years and it's where my heart is.

      Hi John! I lived in Ann Arbor, MI for many years and while I much prefer living in the woods, Ann Arbor is a great place and I do miss it sometimes. Particularly the restaurants - I love Indian food, and Ethiopian, all all kinds of other things you just don’t find in more rural areas. There are places like that within a couple of hours but I miss the days of “I don’t feel like cooking tonight - let’s get Shalimar takeout!” 😂
      In any case, our little tiny local gift shop makes the shirts - talk to Janet or Pat at www.upnorthgift.org and order one, they’ll ship it to you 😃. They carry the work of all three of us Bear Track girls in the store and are great people 😊

    Great looking piece of wood. Nice application for it, too. If you make another one, line it with felt, so the stainless cup fits in tight. Then, don't epoxy it in. That way, the insert can be removed for washing without damage to the wood.

      Hi Peter, I agree - I guess there have been books and magazines for a long time, but being able to watch someone makes all the difference in the world. Unless you want me to do a pull cut, then all bets are off. I’ve watched Lyle Jameison’s video on the pull cut eleventy-billion times and I still can’t get it right. It should be

    I think that would be more difficult to do then a person may think just looking at it your work is really pretty and your choice of word absolutely gorgeous I have trouble hollowing out vessels or vases apparently I just don’t have what it takes to do it with Out major difficulties but I’m going to keep trying maybe you will find an easier way and I will learn from watching you thank you for the video and sharing your knowledge

    • @LisaRamlow
      @LisaRamlow  4 года назад +1

      Hi Randy, thank you so much for watching. Hollowing is a struggle for a lot of us I think - this mug is the largest piece I’ve had to hollow and it was tricky. If I think I’m going to make tall vessel type things in the future I’ll probably look into a boring bar or hollowing system that attaches to the lathe bed for stability.

  • @rayworstine4399

    Nice piece, with stunning burl. I have made a few travel mugs now. I hollow them about 3mm deeper than the length of the insert. I also use a waterproofing silicone sealer, the same sort of thing you use for roofing, or around your sink, under the lips, t prevent any water getting under the insert, and an expanding polyurethane glue like gorilla glue to hold the insert in. I found out the hard way, don’t use too much gorilla glue, as it can crush the insert.

    • @LisaRamlow
      @LisaRamlow  4 года назад

      Hi there, thanks so much for the tips! I thought about using silicone to seal the liner and mug but did actually use what the instructions said, which was epoxy. I think next time I’ll do the silicone to keep water from getting between the liner and mug.
