Woodturning Rescued Montana Firewood - Ponderosa Pine

- Rescuing firewood! Wood turning a beautiful natural edge bowl with a branch sticking out the edge. This is a nice one, and I usually don’t care for pine on the lathe, but this Ponderosa Pine is really special. It was cut from a withered tree up in the Little Belt Mountains, Montana. In addition, I had two talented guests from Montana that tried woodturning for the first time with great success! With some instruction and a little help, they made a gorgeous natural edge spalted Ambrosia Maple bowl. See that action toward the end of this video.
My PO Box was not opened properly by the post office. That situation has been corrected and I’m very sorry if you’ve sent me anything and had it returned to you.

You’re the bob ross of wood turning and I love it! It’s so relaxing.
Goodness, such a compliment! Thank you very much!! 😊
OMGosh.....that Ponderosa Pine bowl has to be one of my all time favorites by ANY woodturner!!
Thank you, I appreciate that!
I may have watched this video 3-4 times. When it comes back up in my feed I always watch it but this is the first time I heard you say " just be the change, it's not too late" Thank You !
Thanks, Rod. Always a pleasure, sir.
Thank you Sapo! 🙂
This has to be on my top ten list of pieces I’ve ever seen! I love the colours you’ve brought out of the wood & that included the little branch too & not just cut it off. 😁🥰 & congrats you the O’s too. That was a very pretty bowl they made too 😍
I am glad to see turning is getting more interest and they have you to teach them. It takes many years to learn the " tricks of the trade".
Thank you very much, hope to see more from you!
Once again, beautiful work!
On a personal note. You stated in your session, “Be the change.” Being a disabled combat Veteran with high level PTSD, wood work has helped slowly start changing me back to the old me. It keeps my hands and my mind busy and focused on a mission that has beautiful and satisfying outcomes, for the most part. It has taken me years to get where back to where I am and, even if only for me, which I’m sure isn’t the case, you are helping other Veterans.
Your videos, as well as some others, help calm me and give me ideas to work on.
Thank you for your service to our great country and thanks for posting / sharing your awesome work, skills and knowledge for others to enjoy and learn from. God bless you and God Bless America! 🇺🇸
I would say that you have no idea how much your comment means to me....but I think you do. I'm a combat veteran as well. Saw more than some and much less than others, and when I describe my wood shop as a place of solace and a refuge from the outside world, I think you understand that as well. Please do email me, brother. Semper Fidelis and God bless you too!
Hey, Top. Where can I send you pics of a spalted oak vase that I just finished for my bride? My 1st “hollowed form” piece.
Thanks Ron for the beautiful bowl.
Thank you!
That was so awesome. It was so wonderful of you to teach Mr. and Mrs. O. I would love to learn woodturning myself. It looks so exciting and multifaceted and just something to completely lose yourself in. I love doing things like that.
It was fun, I really enjoyed their company in the shop. It's exactly like you've just said, for me at least.
I really like the little branch detail, to me it is the little things that really make it unique. 99 % of my wood is cast offs, fallen trees, even wood from older junked furniture. Very much enjoyed the video. First thing I clicked on when I got home from work. Cheers!
Thanks very much Tara, those little things can be gems! Re-purposing is fun!
I love the woodturning, of course. And also your Zen observations. I don't merely tune in for the beautiful wood craft you do. I am now 70. Having begun what my late mom referred to a my 'second lifetime'....(Be the change). Will be sure to keep that in mind.
Thanks very much. Sometimes we (I) just need a reminder 😊
I really like watching the natural edged bowls. You bring out so much beauty in the wood you work with. It’s great stuff.
Congrats Mr. & Mrs. O. I love Ponderosa Pine.
Really nice natural edge bowl Rod! And well done to Mr and Mrs O the bowl looks awesome 👍👍
Thank you Sam! They did a great job!! 🙂
Beautiful work. Thank you for doing an actual speed video. I know it is tough, but it really helps those of us that are learning. I can actually see the angle of the tools and how they are used. Thank you!
Thanks for the feedback. More actual speed coming in this week's project video. I'm experimenting with more actual speed, along with some longer video segments sped up a bit to keep the overall video time down under 15 minutes... 🙂
Nice Bowl(s). Glad to see that you enjoy teaching - face to face - as well as over RUclips..
Thank you! I do enjoy sharing my passion of the craft 🙂
Thanks for showing Rod, absolutely beautiful
Thanks very much!
Rod I love how you take what was going be burnt and you turned into a beautiful bowl totally blowing away live all your videos 😁😁😁😁
Thank you very much! so many hidden gems in the firewood pile!
Beautiful bowl...Thanks for seeing the beauty it contained.
Thank you! Always looking for the potential... I appreciate the comment! .
That changing turn out the bowl look different , more natural , I like it . thank for explain step by step .
Thank you, I'm glad you like it! 😊
Never seen anything like this one but I love all the subtle colours throughout the bowl and the way the rim is shaped ..Very different yet would be a beautiful decorative piece 😀
Thanks so much 😊
Another beautiful bowl. I really like the branch still attached.
Thank you very much!
I missed this one...and glad it popped up again...great work.
Thank you very much!
Your story about shopping for wood and "Just standing there..." made me laugh!!! I'm a quilter and "pet" fabric! Thanks for another great tutorial 🖖
Be the change! So simple. So true.
Thank you Ange! 🙂
Two great looking bowls. Thanks much.
Thanks very much! 😊
Nice job. I love love edge and natural edge bowls. The line is very handsome.
Awesome bowl from the pinewood thank you.
Thanks very much!
A few weeks ago you showed your sensitive side. Then a couple of weeks ago you demonstrated your ability as a poet. Today you're a philosopher. The wood turning is pretty good too. And you are probably pretty good with an M16. . Keep up the good work. Your videos are at the top of my viewing list.
Thank you Glen, I really appreciate that! 🙂
Beautiful! Love those natural edged pieces, and congrats to Mr.and Mrs.O!
Thank you very much!
@@RHumphrey My pleasure! I'm really enjoying your videos.
Rod, I have enjoyed everyone of your videos. This is one of the better pieces that I've seen you do.
Thank you so much! I sure appreciate your encouragement! 😊
Nice job, Mr Humphrey and Mr & Mrs O!
Thank you very much!
Another beautiful bowl. Semper Fi.
Thank you very much, Rick! Semper Fi
From the picture for this video, I thought you had some kind of milky liquid in the bowl, LOL. It's just the very high gloss you achieved.
.....thought the same thing!
Nice video. Always amazed how a bowl slowly appear from a chunk of tree
Honestly, me too! Thank you!
I live in NW Montana and we have TONS of ponderosa. I’m going to try making a bowl. Yours was beautiful ♥️
Watching wood turning is so relaxing and those bowls are beautiful
Thanks very much Ramona! 🙂
I love how this looks
Thank you!
Stunning bowl rod never made any thing from pine but seeing your bowl may keep my eye open of a piece I can play with. Steve
Thanks Steve! Cheers!
the bowl turned out very nice. I cant wait to get my nova chuck, I am sure it will be a lot easer than using a face plate and glue blocks. I've really enjoyed the videos. Congrats. To Mr. & Mrs. O
chucks sure can make life a bit easier 🙂 thank you!
Those bowls look so good. Job well done!
Thank you very much!
That is a really cool bowl.... It has a lot of character...
Thanks very much, it worked out well...I do like that stem for character 😊
I think this one is my fave!
Lucky find in all that wood! Nice bowl!
It was the biggest and least cracked log in the pile! Thank you!
congratulations Mr and Mrs O, and that's one beeyooteeful little bowl. And that is one fine looking piece of firewood! well done all.
Thank you very much!
Great bowl and video. It's amazing what you can do with firewood
Thank you! Many hidden gems in a firewood pile!
Beautiful piece, wonderful philosophy!
Thanks very much! 😊
Hi Rod,
Philosophy is good, but when it comes with experience, it is great!
Beautiful bowls from both you and you talented students, congratulations to the Os on their first turning.
Take care and keep turning!
Regards
Lars
Thank you Lars, we're all learning together!
That edge on your bowl, the little knob you left - gave it bit of class. Unusual, l like. It's a real beauty it is.
Thank you very much! That little branch worked out nicely 😊
I am sooo jealous of where you live! Thanks yet again for another informative video Rod. Both beautiful pieces. 👌💕
Thank you very much!
A stunning piece...well done.
Thank you very much!
Such awesome work such beautiful wooden things
Thanks very much!
Awesome turning amazing I really want to get back into turning myself
Thanks very much! It has a certain draw...
Hey Rod you’ve done it again, I cant believe that wood was going to be burnt away good save. Now pine isn’t one of my favourite woods either but I do agree it definitely has a lovely grain to it and your bowl is absolutely stunning and I love the contrasting colours in the wood.
What a fantastic piece Mr & Mrs O made together with the stand with you as a teacher how could anyone go wrong.
Great video, Keep on turning 📐💜📐
Thanks so much! I used some more of that same firewood in this week's video, resin and pine with pinecones... I loved having Mr.& Mrs O. in my shop, great people!
R Humphrey looking forward to it, cant wait.
Your videos are fascinating ! Thank YOU !
Thank you, I appreciate that!
Be the change! Couldn't be said better, Rod. Congrats to Mr. and Mrs O on a beautiful piece. Loved the Ponderosa Pine bowl too. Just over 45 years ago I made something for my folks out of Ponderosa Pine. The stuff available back then had some beautiful green and red streaks in it. Old growth I'm thinking. Haven't seen anything like it since then. The gray-blue sap wood in your piece almost reminds me of beetle kill pine.
Billy
Thank you Billy! The green and red streaks must have been quite beautiful. Maybe a beetle kill, not sure. I don't recall any bore patterns or holes. I really like the distinct colors 🙂
Love the colors
Thanks very much! 😊
Another very enjoyable video. Pine is fun to turn because it is so soft. I turn a lot of cedar which is abundant here in Florida.
I do enjoy the softer woods, pine is ok...I love cedar though! thank you!
Love the branch inclusion in the bowl. Also, about what kind of wood can be turned, use any wood that speaks to you. It's up to you to bring out the story the wood wants you to tell. There are no wrong stories, what you end up with as the final product is the exact story that was to be told. Hope that didn't sound too cheesy, lol.
Not cheesy...perfectly stated in my opinion.
Very nice work, thanks for sharing.
Thank you!
Good looking bowls.
Thank you!
Nice looking piece
Thanks so much for your answer!! I do a great deal of work with re-purposed textile, and also stand and 'wait' for a length of cloth, or a used garment.... to 'speak to me'..I know exactly what you are referring to...My hubby Ric said to tell you...his old New Orleans friend had a lathe (this was years ago) from the 1890's..he swore you could put a telephone pole on one end...being the Gulf Coast area, they worked a great deal in cypress. Those wonderful columns in front of houses, out on the porch.
Thanks Cynthia! I failed to mention some woods might be allergenic.... or as Moondyne Joe commented, even toxic. A bad oversight on my part, but I haven't had any problems with such things, and I'm not aware of any in North America.... but the unknowns should be researched. I'd love to see a huge lathe like that in action! New Orleans has such beautiful architecture. I love the columns. Hello to Ric, and thank you!
Hi! I'm a quilter and "pet" fabric until it "talks" to me!
Love it keep on turning
Thank you very much!
Nicely done Msgt.
Thank you very much! Semper Fi
I love watching your videos, Rod. You make some beautiful bowls etc. I also look forward to you saying Semper Fi at the end. Lol. I wish you all the very best, mate. Semper Fi.
Thank you very much! I appreciate that Cathy, Semper Fi, mate!
Always thought pine would have to much sap,,guess not, thanks for sharing,,,,,nice bowls Mr and Mrs O
I think the greener the wood, the more of a sap problem. This was very dry and weathered though, so none at all. Thank you!
Great answer for which wood you can turn!
Thank you!
looking good, Top! Pine isn't normally my first choice, either. But it has it's moments. I didn't realize you were taking on apprentices! Good on ya!
Thank you! More like an introduction to the craft to a couple of talented guests 🙂
Nice bowl and a great woodworking toughts !
Congratulations to Mrs and Mr O,welcome to the world of woodturning !
Thank you!
Nice work. When I was watching the final reveal (at 10:55) in the video, all I could think of was my kids bowls with the straw attached when they were young. Sorry that is what came to mind. Love the piece.
From an Air Force brother, Semper Fi
Thank you! All good, it sounds like a nice memory! Outstanding, Semper Fi brother!
Very beautiful bowl. It's remarkable how you can take a piece of scrap wood and turn it into a work of art. Cheers!
Thank you! Those firewood chunks always make me think! cheers!
Great video. Thanks a lot! Semper Fi!
Thanks! Always nice to hear from you! Semper Fi
Such a beautiful piece-it speaks quite clearly. All from following your guy! Good on ya
Thank you very much! 🙂
I am so impresed with, what I call a nice addition to my wood burning stove, but you see art. Very impressive. I am also impressed with how geniune and honest you are. Most would say, "I intended to start this piece this way." Not you however. You admit your only human and we all make mistakes. Thank you for that. As for Mr. amd Mrs. O.... congratulations for starting on a new and exciting adventure. I hope the both of you enjoy doing this and it makes your relationship stronger and more rewarding.
Thank you very much, I appreciate that! 😊
Injoy this a lot
Thank you very much!
Nice unique one tooth bowl.
Thank you so much!
Stunning!
Thank you!
Another beautiful project this one's my favorite so far can do brother semper fi
Thank you, brother! Semper Fi
@@RHumphrey lady Seabee here lol
@Kelley Towle oops.....Semper Fi, Sister! Much respect!
Beautiful.
Thanks! 🙂
I didn’t realize you’re a fellow Hoosier! I’m originally from up north, In Elkhart county. I’m in Pittsburgh now, but I sure do miss the cornfields
I'm imported from Michigan, but I do love these cornfields too. They're all being harvested now... PA is a beautiful state too though!
Hi again Mr. Humphrey
Well l'll tell you what...you've done it again here...
Nice to have students along as well...if you have the knowledge then you pass it on...
The bit at the beginning about how you yourself can affect change reminded me...
Hello Glenn, thank you!
Was gone for a bit for testing so I'm sorry so late but such a beautiful piece, you did and also your guest's as well.
Keep up the good work it truly is beautiful. Have a great day and stay safe out there..
Thank you very much! Hope the testing went well...and same to you! 🙂
This is a beautiful bowl like every thing you make. After seeing how you marked the bottom of the bowl I was thinking about how my dad marks his challenge coin holders. He used a uniform marking kit. It adds a cool touch only Marines understand. I just wanted to give you an idea Semper Fi brother.
Thank you very much!
and Semper Fi!!!
Fantastic rescue. Thanks for sharing and allowing us to learn and become better turner's 👊👊👊
Thank you, I appreciate that!
Good stuff, Rod!
Thank you!
Beautiful turnings Rod! thanks for sharing them with us.👍😎JP
Thank you again JP!
Art by nature, revealed by you! That's what i'd call it. :)
Sounds good, thank you! 😊
Thumbs up for the video and enjoyed it
thank you very much Russell!
Thanks for the knowledge brother. Semper Fi.
Thank you! Semper Fi!
That’s beautiful and that my friend it’s all about god bless you semper FI
Thanks brother! Semper Fi
congrats on 30k, every last one of them is well deserved
I can't thank you (all) enough! It's such a great feeling to know so many people are interested in my work! 😊💖
Beautiful
Thank you!
That is a great looking piece of pine. I have turned a lot of sugar pine and it doesn't look anything like that.
But it sure does smell sweet Great job of having the branch right in the middle of the edge.
Beautiful bowl!
Thanks you very much! That angle! I had to track it down!
What a cracking bowl, I like it a lot and love the feature the little bough makes, very cleverly turned Rod, well done to you! Not tried a live edge bowl yet as I'm very much still learning, and those rough edges need respect - wouldn't want a catch near those !! Re "change", we have plague by our front door called a serenity prayer. Quote "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference" I often look at it. By the way love your heavy duty scraper - been searching but can't find one in the UK hey ho. Kind regards, Tony.
Thank you Tony! I love that quote. Serenity, courage, and wisdom through God, could take us all on a more peaceful path. the Scraper is a Robert Sorby, make in the UK ironically... all my tools are Sorby at the moment. Cheers!
Thanks Rod, must look a little closer re the scraper! I also have some Robert Sorby tools, thanks for that, regards,Tony.
You are the Bob Ross of woodturning,I mean that in the nicest way😀subbed!
You're very kind, thank you! And thanks very much for the sub!!
So beautiful. Also, Mr. & Mrs. O did great job. They had a talented teacher. Glad your channel is growing. :-)
Thank you very much, they sure did! 🙂 And I sure appreciate the interest!
Very nice!! 👍👍👍
Thank you!
Beautiful! You have inspired me to buy a lathe!! 😁😁
If you notice the blue disk sander under my lathe....that is my first lathe. Harbor Freight bench top, now a dedicated sander with a special place in my heart!
