Beautiful Burl but Hard as Hell !!

In this RUclips video, I turn a winged bowl from a Mallee burl. It's definitely one of the coolest burls to look at in my opinion but is extremely hard and dense, which means it can be tricky to turn, but well worth the effort..

Oh, Andy! If I could have asked you to do a video to help me turn a blah bowl into something worth looking at......well, this is IT! I took the plunge and paid big bucks for a red mallee burl several years ago. I did what I thought was "right" and it turned out to be so nothing that I have had it sitting on a shelf ever since. While I can no longer attempt to do what you have done so beautifully, I think I can do some corrective turning and have a piece worth gifting to a friend (what I do with most of my turnings). MAJOR THANK YOU!!!!!!!! The master teaches once again.

You didn't comment on how many times you had to go back and sharpen LOL. I sort of 'Cheated'. I had four gouges ready on the bench top to keep a bit of continuity rather than stopping every few minutes. And yes I used carbides in the end . It should take pride of place in the middle of the display shelf. Thanks Andy.

I live in the low country of SC. There’s lot of galleries and antique and vintage store. Some sell these beautiful bowls and vases but you really can’t appreciate the time and effort and skill that goes into wood turning unless you watch it being done. Very lovely piece! You could place snacks in the bowl and toast on the edge. Would make a very interesting dinner table piece. A nice knife with a wooden handle on it makes it complete. Well done again Andy!

I love the revealing of the subtle and not as subtle changes in the grain and it's color intensities. Wood is so amazing. You took a lot of care with this piece. This wood was iron hard, but still, it could have been over worked on the apron. With patience you drew it out as thin as was prudent and the result is beautiful. It is a wonderful bowl Andy. Great work.
