Rod, with your soothing voice you are the Bob Ross of woodturning. I'm no expert but I don't think we have any wood as spectacular as that here in the UK. I can't believe it's just burned as fuel.
Wow, such a compliment! I wish I had Bob Ross's hair :) Thank you very much! Look for Juniper or maybe Yew, I believe you have both...but I'm not sure how prevalent the trees are. Yes, commonly burned for heat...cedar, black walnut, maple, ash, oak, elm, etc....we have trees a-plenty around here and people cut them down all the time for various reasons. I'm always on the prowl for logs along my travels. Thanks again!
@@RHumphrey Mr. Humphrey... You must live somewhere near my neck of the woods. In my original home state of Washington, we burn sappy conifer tree wood. It's great fuel for a wood stove. Where I'm at now in Arkansas, everyone burns Red Oak and White Oak. It seemed really odd to me at first.
That would make an awesome bowl to put on a stand next to the front door and put House/Car keys in it. What a conversation piece. Awesome work, true wood art.
May I add my wholehearted agreement. Such beautiful wood. I'm so glad you decided to realize it's potential for beauty and then to share it with us. Good video. Nice, pleasant commentary. Bravo, you.
When I was about 18 working in my Dad’s cabinet shop here in northern Louisiana, we had a customer bring in a trailer load of 4/4” eastern red cedar that he had cut and milled and stored in a barn and airdried for 7 years. The boards were a little over 8’ long and 6”-12” wise and around 1600 board feet of lumber. We milled some nice tongue and groove paneling and built a custom armoire and a traditional style trunk for the foot of the bed with built in seat with cushioned top and drawers at the bottom and the upper lid/seat opened for inside storage of trunk. I love the smell of eastern red cedar and was a pleasure to work with. We did have to work around the knots and select the best wood for the project. I’ve had the pleasure of working with Jatoba(Brazilian Cherry) Teak, Africacan Bloodwood, African and Honduran mahogany, Ebony, Obeche, Purpleheart, Padouk, Bubinga, Indian Rosewood, South American rosewood, Bocote, Kingswood, hard Rock maple, wild black Cherry, quartersawn White oak, quartesawn Sycamore and Beech, Curly Maple, Black Waln
Beautiful wood. I've never seen such a grain, in the Sierras we have the western red bark cedar, and the grain looks quite different on this ? Eastern Red Cedar. Not quite as strong as Redwood but really rot resistant. I made a deck and just used 12" spacers for the joices. I made the deck, 1976 and it is still in good shape today. Once a year application of Linseed oil has help it from getting too dry.
Easter Redcedar is from the Juniper family (Juniperus Virginiana) lol...I've learned more about this wood since I posted the video...! I'll bet that deck is really pretty
Well I have LOVED wood all my life and this lump of Cedar wood has a remarkable but BEAUTIFUL grain how amazing what a Lathe can do marvelously things.

Thank you! I so much agree with you...and I did burn some myself, albeit lesser and seemingly unusable chunks (at the time) ... But, well said, one never knows what might be inside that next log.
