I have a friend who used to turn things like that. Some are in museums now. People payed a lot of money for her work. I could not understand or grasp how she did it, thank you for showing me so I could understand it. Blessings!

I made a "hook tool" by welding onto a handled rod; an old file that I forged into a ring. I made it a ring for added strength, so there is no vibration that the hook may have. Works very well for slicing side grain inside vases like is shown here. I wouldn't like it to hit end grain though.

Robusts American Beauty is quite the lathe with all the bells and whistles.. Not a bad way to blow 8 grand. Hook tools have been a thing since the days of turning with a spring pole and your foot.. Not as mainstream due to the fact that it isn't idiot proof.. but what hollowing tool is? Oh right.. the ones that are mounted to the lathe bed with an articulating arm.
How cool was that. I used to love wood shop in high school where we were taught to do wood turning. You really made me want to do this once again. I have the equipment but it has be 55 years since I did any of this. Thank you for rekindling my urge to do this. It is something that I will be able to enjoy once again.

A degloving injury is far worse than loosing your favorite leather work gloves. It involves the loss of all the skin (and or flesh) in the area of your injury. Its called degloving cause it looks like you have taken your gloves off but a lot more blood than that.
Knowing these gory details helps you stay safe. I have a great fear of my table saw and hopefully I'll never get complacent around it. I heard of a student in my art class who got her hand caught on a large wood auger in a drill press. So easy to loose it without a vice in the drill press.
