Wow! I loved the way you left the four legs. Haven’t turned since school, that’s 45 years ago. Now I really want to get started with some old gear I came across. I’m a 59 year young woman from Sweden. Beautiful work. Wow, wow, wow❣️
I'm 67 & have worked with wood most of my life but I just got my dad's very old lathe & tools & can't wait to learn new stuff. Never too old to learn. I live in Texas.
All you guys need to get some equipment and start. No time like the present to create some beautiful pieces! Creativity is so healing for your mind and soul.
Absolutely gorgeous work. Resin would have marred the natural beauty you managed to preserve despite working the piece. Fantastic, thank you for uploading this!
Glorious! I’m so glad Scott sent this to you so you could make it into all it could be. It waited 25 years for you. And all your subscribers and viewers are really glad! Keep on keeping on, and be very sure you keep yourself safe. You’d be sorely missed by so many. You are NOT allowed to take your talent away!
That is a very nice bowl. I think the gold leaf was a great choice. I love how the projects goes from thought to finished art. You're a very gifted person, sir. Thank you for sharing your talent. SEMPER FI.
My dad is unbelievably giddy about you making this. He absolutely loves watching wood turning videos so this is a dream come true for him. I can’t wait to see this beautiful piece when it arrives.
Rod, you made my day! Thanks so much for bring out the treasure in that. I can't believe I've kept up with it for 25 years. Glad I got it into the right hands to do it justice. I knew resin was a possibility due to the odd shape, but I'm glad you didn't use it. Glad most of it was hollowed out and you didn't have to fight that super hard wood. Thanks Rod.
@scottgm321 so far this is my favourite piece he’s turned. An earthy piece with so much character. Thanks for giving us the opportunity to see its transformation. 🥰
That burl was created just for you. It challenged you, it tested you, and in the end, you took a hunk of wood that would be overlooked by some and made perfection. Semper Fi
What I love about this is that this wood has so much character and you managed to preserve that. I'm glad you didnt use resin its a stunning piece all on it's own.
Should we be surprised you found a way to turn this wood? Nope! After all you adapted, improvised and overcame; just as my beloved Corp instilled into you. Great turning, Rod!!! Oorah!!
You remind me of the man that taught me to build houses. My first morning on the job he said, "See that stack of wood. There's a house in it, our job is to find it and assemble it. " I admire your ability to see such amazing pieces of art in each piece of wood you turn.
Well sir I concur that is an amazing piece of wood. I really like your sparring use of cuts and the gold embellishment was pure genius! That is an inspirational piece.
It's gorgeous! I turned a hickory walking stick once. Felt like I chucked up a bar of iron. Soooo many light cuts, and had to sharpen I don't know how many times. Came out real nice though.
Hey, I just wanted to mention that, at least for me and hopefully the majority of your long time subscribers, you don't have to justify your choices for how you want to create something. This is your creation and your work, and we're here to enjoy the show. Thanks, as always for showing off your skills and work for us.
I haven't turned in over a year now and still a beginner. Just this week I found a blow down cherry tree in the woods, just loaded with burls of different diameters and I can't wait to tackle them. Your video has me chomping at the bit. You do a great job narrating and demonstrating on your video so I just had to subscribe.
Was hoping you would show a picture of the piece in it's original form in the end. That speaks volumes. Another well done tutorial and finished product. It screams of an old antique to me. Beautiful sir. Semper Fi
Beautiful, your turning brought a rough looking piece of Burl to an outstanding piece of art. Fantastic skill on your part thank you for sharing , an inspiration to us all.
She's a beauty Rod... you did an excellent job of maintaining the natural beauty of the burl and I like the gold accent in the crack. God Bless and Semper Fi
It's a really great looking bowl. I can appreciate the hardness you were dealing with as I started out tuning oak. Great Job. kkEEP THE INSPIRATION COMING.
Wow! You didn't just turn a piece of wood in to something. You keep the spirit of the wood it self and make it shine more and more! You're a master of turning Mr. Tanks for sharing this!! 😎👍👍👍
That is a beautiful piece, you do nice work. I just brought my dad's lathe home to my shop (it's really old) along with his turning tools, I've never used a lathe & I'm watching tons of videos to learn. I have done woodworking for 50 years & wanted to learn something new. Thanks for the lessons.
Really well done Rod. You had a difficult piece to work with and you did very well with it. I really like the shine finish you put on. I wish you had another to work with as I would be interested in seeing how it would look with a satin finish. And I agree, a resin finish would not have been the way to go. Nice touch with the gold vein. It's a shame it has to sit on all that wonderful figure on the bottom. Maybe you could make a small pedestal and put a mirror under it. Thank you for sharing and please stay healthy.
This turned our awesome. I love how you try to preserve the little things like the saw marks. After all, they are history and memories. Thanks for the video. Go Navy
Hi Rod! I know you're a former Marine, just wanted to tell you that I am a former U. S. Navy Hospital Corpsman, I know several Marines, love you guys. Beautiful Bowl you created!!. Thanks for sharing with us!!.
The majic you worked w that burly is truely a treasure. Gold accentuates the natural beauty within. This was a tough one and made you work for it. Hard wood then aged too. Thanks for sharing this 🙏blessed days sirSir Crawford out 🧙♂️
Been following you for a while now and I've seen some pretty amazing work but this tops it all. I absolutely love the flow of the piece from natural to worked and back to natural. Thank you for sharing.
Really was worth the extra time you spent in contemplating before you turned this one. Mother nature lent herself creating the potential and you masterfully and delicately realized her challenges with this unusual and marvelous design. Thanks so much. Feels like a gift from above to see it.
Really, really beautiful! Loved how you kept the ‘bumpy feet’ on the bottom, and adding that bit of gold veining really helped the colors pop. This would be great on a front door table as a key catcher. Or dozens of other things. Great piece.
Super super job turning Rod, what an absolutely gorgeous bowl. You really did justice to a fantastic piece of Burl, thanks for sharing and showing nature at her best.
Yew sound like Robert Mitchum. Love your work. I carve bowls myself [ hand tools, no power tools ] but would love to get a lathe one day. Keep it up and take care.
Rod, thank you so very much showing the full process and, on this particular one, your commentary was especially helpful. Your art is such a joy to watch!
Possibly the most beautiful bowl I've ever seen. Thank you for sharing and also for showing the work of your subscribers. This videos contributions are exceptionally fine!
Darn Rod! Now I'm going to have to buy some spray shellac! That was a beautiful bowl before it but the finish was excellent. Good sanding had a lot to do with it! Be safe and healthy! Kevin
Love it. A lot of thought went into it and it turned out beautiful. I love the natural edges and it was very cool that you chose to honor the fellow who sent it by leaving the original saw marks. That was a very creative touch with the gold leaf. Thank you for all you do.
A beautiful piece and love the gold paint. I love to see otherwise unusable wood resined but you were absolutely right to leave this in it's natural form. I also love the coaching you do and your switching of speeds.
I'm absolutely amazed by the level of detail in this piece. You must really see the finished article through God's eyes. Keep safe my friend. Semper Fi
A PS, Rod. I am a jewelry maker, beads, wire, clay. I approach the materials and ask what they want to be, even need to be, and then percolate the ideas as they come. They sit on my work table as this piece did your desk. That’s where the understanding you received for the gold veining came from. When the artist maker is open, inspiration gets thru. I have a piece of very old cinnabar waiting. You go from a whole waiting for you to reveal the heart. I often must wait for the rest of the materials to join the heart. Amazingly, I learn so much from you! We seem to work from opposite directions. But it is the guidance you give. Wait, wonder, enjoy the process, patience. Hear yourself? Thank you for your gifts.
Beautiful!!! Unique!!! Well done!!! How nice to be gifted such a distinctive piece of wood. Great projects sent in by your subscribers. Take care. Stay safe and well. God bless.
Ohhh WOW for such a hard wood you make it look amazing.. Great work. Again. Thanks so much.
I love it. As always, excellent work brother. Semper Fi.
Wow Rod! That really turned out beautiful. I really enjoyed your video while having my Friday morning coffee at 6:30 AM. Thank You

Love the look in this small bowl. In my opinion it came out gorgeous. The stand is very nice in it's natural look. Way to go, Sir. 👍
Turning air is very nerve wracking. Great job and finished product. Love the narration on your videos.
Truly beautiful work, done in tune with wood......gorgeous! Well done!

The gold in the crack at the bottom enhances the color of the browns in the bowl. Gorgeous bowl.
Truly an art form. I am amazed at how you transformed this into a gem!
Super super job turning Rod, what an absolutely gorgeous bowl. You really did justice to a fantastic piece of Burl, thanks for sharing and showing nature at her best.

Cinnabar is toxic. Idea: cover it in clear resin, set in a piece of hand carved burl wood.
That is so beautiful, I love how rustic it it. Good job.
Beautiful!!! Unique!!! Well done!!! How nice to be gifted such a distinctive piece of wood.
Great projects sent in by your subscribers.
Take care. Stay safe and well. God bless.
This leaves me speechless. What an amazing job on a stellar piece of wood. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Beautiful, love the "feet" on the bottom and the gold in the crack is just enough bling. Thanks for sharing.
I like how you allowed the basic shape, to determine the turning: too super-cool!
Good morning, Rod. Thank you for the beauty, marine.
Edit: I knew it would be nice, but wow! A wooden geode blending into the earth. Semper Fidelis.
Thanks very much! Semper Fi
“Heal-overs are so beautiful and working them is quite a challenge. You handled it well, especially considering how dry it was. Nice job done.
Thank you so much!
Beautiful !!! If we listen hard and long enough, the wood will tell us what it wants to be.....I think.......
Great video!
Thanks very much! 😊
Interesting and dynamic choices of where to leave the natural bark. Love it!
Good Job I would not have imagined the result ..... Congrats
