  • Woodturning Apple Wood Bowl - Finish turning a twice-turned apple bowl that was roughed when green
    A while back I picked up some apple logs from a local orchard. Some of them were pretty gnarly (and good candidates for resin!) but I had a few trunks that were of a decent diameter and were solid for the most part, though a bit soft in places. I rough turned a bowl from one of the bigger logs and stuck it in the converted dishwasher kiln for a few weeks. I didn’t record the rough turning but thought it would be fun to show the finish turning process. You can see how oval the bowl went when drying - so much in fact that I had to turn the tenon down to use the smaller 50mm jaws because I didn’t have enough wood left to get it back to round and carry on with the 100mm jaws. Fortunately I had enough thickness to complete the bowl and I’m pleased with how it turned out.
    I’ll be making some modifications to my dishwasher kiln in the coming weeks. I’m using a 60w incandescent bulb for the heat source and the first load I dried in it came out perfectly. However, since that first load I’ve blown (2) 60w and (1) 40w bulb. A friend uses a humidity controller and is having good luck with it so I ordered one and am going to give it a shot. I’m picking up a load of green butternut this weekend and want to get it roughed and into the kiln as soon as I can. I’ll keep you posted 😃

      Hi Scott, thanks for watching! I initially had great luck with my dishwasher kiln, but am going to redo the “mechanics” of it and add a humidity controller as I keep blowing the light bulbs. But I haven’t lost any to cracking yet - here’s hoping that continues 🤞

    I have a love-hate relationship with apple wood. I think it’s the prettiest wood I’ve worked with and most self destructive. It really likes to move as it dries. Good job.

      Hi there, thanks for watching! This is the first time I’ve turned apple and I have a bunch of it, but mostly larger branches. I got a trailer load from on orchard after they did their thinning out and so they weren’t very big trees but I figured it was good to practice on. It sure is pretty and there’s chips & shavings for smoking!

    Love the apple wood. I’m still impressed how much really green wood moves/warps as a result of drying. It seemed so thick when you started and you barely had enough material to finish dimension. Nice piece.

    • @LisaRamlow
      @LisaRamlow  3 года назад

      Hi Adam! Yes, it’s pretty crazy - some species seem to move more than others. I have a few blanks I roughed out really early on in my turning journey that I didn’t leave enough to get round once they dried, but the Big Green Monster walnut bowl that I turned green has only gone oval about 1/2” total and warped really evenly

  • @josephwise485
    @josephwise485 3 года назад

    Lisa, it looked like you were sheer scraping by pulling your gouge. Pull cut basicly the same, just open the flute some more and hold the handle flatter to the tool rest. Otherwise, see Lyle Jamieson's channel, he is a master at it. Maybe after rough turning a piece, you should see the center point better, tap it with your awl. You might have been able to take your center finder and make a lot of marks on the tenon to get a better idea where the center should have been. There are a lot better turners that might have better tips about it though. Safe turning.

    • @LisaRamlow
      @LisaRamlow  3 года назад

      Hi Joseph, thanks for watching and for the tip! I have actually watched almost all of Lyle's videos and the one on the pull cut multiple times. I understand what I'm SUPPOSED to do, I just can't actually seem to do it! Instead of Anchor, Bevel, Twist, Cut, I go Anchor, Bevel Twist, Catch 🙄. I learned from this to make sure the dimple is super obvious!

    When we create is the goal to make it appear as if created by a machine so it is dimensionally perfect? Or is the goal to create imperfect beauty so that it gives evidence, and hence meaning, to the word “handcrafted”?

    • @LisaRamlow
      @LisaRamlow  3 года назад

      I’m definitely in the “defects = handrafted” group.

    Hi. I am fairly new to turning, what is a “pole cut”?

    • @LisaRamlow
      @LisaRamlow  3 года назад

      Pull cut - it’s a bevel-rubbing cut with the nose of the gouge trailing the handle, rather than leading the way as with a push cut. I just can’t get the hang of it without it catching on me 🤷‍♀️
      So I do push cuts and use scrapers instead 😁👍

      Hi Mike! You have to keep in mind that I have 2 projects going on at the moment - this lovely apple bowl and a piece of oak burl with some crazy beautiful grain that I cast with some resin and it’s really hard to compete with that!
      Yes, I probably should have used the center finder again, it might have gotten me closer. I need to remember to make a deep dimple and maybe hit it with a sharpie for good measure! 😂

    That's a very nice piece of work Lisa. You also gave a very good explanation of your considerations while on the job.
    My rule of thumb for green turning is to leave 10% of the diameter as my wall thickness. This bowl appeared to be well in that range but you could see the warping very well when you started working on the inside. It was indeed considerable.
    All in all a result that you can be proud of. One more question if I may: What do you do with all these finished bowls?
    /Leo

    • @LisaRamlow
      @LisaRamlow  3 года назад

      Hi Leo, thank you. I shoot for the 10% thickness and most times it works out - I did have one bowl from the first load out of the kiln that I ran out of thickness on, though it was a smaller bowl and I may have taken it just a bit too thin. I think it was oak, not sure if the species plays a role in shrinkage or not but I would think so.
      I am currently selling (most of) my work in a couple of local gift shop/galleries. I have a website and plan to sell there as well but I still need to finish building it and getting it updated and that has somehow fallen to the bottom of my to-do list. One of these days I’ll get it straightened out! 😊

    What exactly is the definition of a burl?

    • @LisaRamlow
      @LisaRamlow  3 года назад +1

      Hi Robert, I’m not sure of the technical definition but basically a burl is formed when a tree sustains some sort of injury or disease - I believe the tree tries to heal around it and the resulting grain is all kinds of crazy!
