Phil, you are one of the best wood turners I've seen and the truth is you are probably the best. You go for the natural look and don't have to have resin to pretty something up. I'm a copy cat and have learned so much from you about revealing what is natural in the wood. Keep up the good work.
That’s really nice, Phil and so great that it’s got your initial on the bottom. a lot of people would’ve probably used it for firewood but you’ve made it really special just for you and your son of course it’s very quaint. I really do like it.
🙋♂️🏴 Amazing turning Phil it wasn't until you drilled out the center of the bowl did I realize what you where creating. I've never heard of wood that changes colour like that the grain pattern on the yellow side is great. A nice piece of art for Mr Anderson to treasure. 🇺🇲
Each of your work is work of art is very individual and amazing! Everything is done with imagination and love with the utmost respect for the material. Thanks for the pleasure of seeing the creative process!
Definitely an A+ job Phil. Keep up the great work. Watching your end results has definitely made me think outside the box on some projects. Great job!!!
Love your turning and your vision of what something can be...! Good stuff Phil... Thank you so much for these videos and I know this is an old video but it's so good to see your back and at it...!!!
Well you and that piece of wood are just a " suppose to be " thing . I have some Osage orange here that I haven't tried. Guess I will have to now . What a wonderful memory you have made . And another wonderful bowl .
Hi Phil... really lovely job on the bowl, plate, hollow form, platter, thingy... Haha... I'm glad that you didn't catch your digits in that spinning death trap... great video... take care...All the best.....Andy
Watching it back, it does look a little scary, but I survived so there's that! LOL! Thank you so much for taking your time to watch and comment on my videos, much appreciated, Andy!
That wood color is rather unique. The grain is lovely with a good contrast. As you held it, it reminded me of my father’s pipe tobacco and pipe rack set that he had in the mid 1960’s. It also points out, your little bowl on a board/tray, might really pop with a turned dark lid, some wood with a wide but contrasting grain. Loved watching this project unfold. And some important “paying attention to the clearances between this and that so nothing inadvertently flies off, or it clipping you good-accidentally on purpose-yipe.” It is said it’s not a project until you bleed on it, but it’s best not to use a natural stain such as that on a project. Thanks again for “A” Bowl Project.
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop it stains sort of dark discoloration, does not take evenly to wood, and can be fickle to seal. Make dyes and stains from other things or get preparations of aniline dyes. Only thing is varnish used to be made of slaughterhouses blood was used to make varnish. Parents found an old.varnish can in the house they bought that said on the label, “Blood makes good paint” ( think it was Dutch Boy) from early 1950’s..
Wow, that grain is amazing! The variation in color before the sun changes it is so striking. What a neat way to preserve the A. Definitely an interesting conversation starting piece.
I like it a lot Phil. Sure, it's a simple bowl but there's a story behind it - literally! Grest that you kept yhs "A" for your initial - mine too! If I ever find a chunk of wood with a big A on it I'll take a leaf out of your book and try to find a way of making something good-looking out of it.
I grew up in Iowa and still have a house there. Mostly living in Nevada these days. I have harvested several Osage Orange trees. We called them hedge trees where I grew up. If I come up with a unique piece I’ll send it to you. Love your turnings. Thanks
Hi Phil I’m on the Coromandel peninsula north island New Zealand Love your videos, Each one helps extend my turning knowledge, after 30 years of turning there’s allways more to learn. Happy new year to you turn till you drop is my motto Regards Bun
Thanks, Phil! Here in the Missouri Ozarks, in addition to Osage Orange, that wood is also called bois d'ark (bodark) and also hedge. It is absolutely impervious to rot and gets very hard with age. Commonly used for corner posts in fences. There is a hedge corner post on our place that my great grandfather set in 1890 when he moved here from Arkansas. Still solid as can be. Love the turning and finish. Great, creative work! Cheers, Pete
I turned a bowl from osage orange about 30 years ago and it still has most of it's color. As I recall it turned nicely but it's a very hard wood and it's hard on tools. Your piece is very nice and a bit unusual die to the letter "A" on the back. Thank you for sharing. Have a great 2021 and stay healthy.
Looks great. Love how you saved the A. Just bought my first bowl blanks today. I think I may try something like yours. Thanks for the inspiration. Keep the videos coming.
Hello Phil you made a nice bowl of Osage Orange. That is a type of wood I have never heard of, but it looked like it is quite hard. Stay safe and keep turning
Well, after all, there is an A on the bottom. Gotta keep that. Well done. Great wood for sure and I like hearing the story about where it came from and how it got to you.
Love this so much I am trying to turn one like it hope it will go well thank you for sharing love looking at you do this work you make it all look so easy keep up the good work
Very nice. I love the colors in Osage. I like to finish with CA glue them buff. Makes colors really pop. Turn the piece in sun light and colors change from bright yellow to red brown.
As all of Your enjoyable videos, this one absolutely scores an "A",,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Thanks David !

That’s really nice, Phil and so great that it’s got your initial on the bottom. a lot of people would’ve probably used it for firewood but you’ve made it really special just for you and your son of course it’s very quaint. I really do like it.

This one was a challenge but fun at the same time. I would do it again, hopefully still without the red stain! 😊
