    I never had the original Firefly as a kid, so I was happy to pick this one up in '92 to add the character to my collection. I like the figure sculpt, and the green is a great color as far as colors go; but not for a military figure. He would have looked great with the gray being a darker shade (like his '84 camo) and the green being light gray (to match his '84 base color). I've always preferred the '92 gray version since it was the one I had, matched his comic appearance and seemed like a nod to the original, but the black variant is starting to grow on me.
    Given FF's concept card mention of the French Foreign Legion, and his retconned origin in those later comics (son of a presumable French plantation owner in Viet Nam), I'd love to see Vincent Cassel play him in a movie someday.

    Great review Bryan. I can't overstate just how much these neon colors detract from the figures. When you compare the 80s and 90s eras, it looks as if there was a completely different group of people designing and sculpting. I do know the Hasbro chief who brought GI Joe back in 1982 passed away in 1989...I wonder how much his death impacted the direction of the toys for the last few years.

    • @user-si9fx4xb6v
      @user-si9fx4xb6v 5 лет назад

      As a fellow G.I. Joe collector, I would imagine it did impact things behind scenes to a degree. The years of 1990-1994 saw quite a bit of deviation from the military roots of the line. Plus just about each year of the 1990's featured some gimmick to help sell the toys. I will admit the spring loaded missile launchers, where one of the better ideas to come out of this period. I am still gratefully that despite much of the silliness of this era, we still got some decent action figures like Big Ben from time to time.

    By 1992/1993, I was 13/14, and almost both feet out of the Joe game. However, I never had Firefly 1.0 as a kid, and wouldn't acquire him for another few years, so when I saw Firefly 2.0 in stores, he was an immediate buy. I was also still reading the Marvel Joe comics at the time, so it was cool to see Firefly return in his new costume. However, the comparison between 1.0 and 2.0 are so drastically different. I'll just say if I saw both 1.0 and 2.0 on the shelves, I would have bought 1.0 100% of the time over greeny. Though, I am glad I bought him.

    The green color wasn't always green. That was the "at rest" color. When activated, the material imitated it's surroundings as a chameleon would. *This is not canon, but does make the character a bit more enjoyable IMO.

    This figure was never Firefly to me. I reimagined him as C4 Viper. A unit of vipers trained by Firefly in demolitions. He didn’t like competition so the neon uniform was chosen so they had to work harder. He enjoyed his paycheck for training them and designing their costumes. The unit didn’t last long however.

    I was just happy to have a brand new Firefly figure. By 1992 my 1984 Firefly was in pretty bad shape and I very much needed a replacement. Would I have preferred a more subdued green? Or even a repeat of 1984 camouflage pattern? Sure! Heck, make it a digital camo pattern like Shockwave or Sonic Fighters Falcon. But in those pre-eBay days, I was willing to take what I could get. I was also fortunate to have an extra of 1984 Firefly's backpack, and the grays match perfectly, which makes me prefer the 1992 version a bit more. I like the sculpt, I like the design. If the colors and accessories had been better, this would have a standout figure IMHO. He's one of those 90s figures that I wish we'd gotten a repaint of in the 2000s. But it was never to be.

    Awesome review of Firefly...I gotta say though hard to beat the version 1.

  • @bobastu
    @bobastu 4 года назад

    "I came, I saw, I blew something up" is a derivation of Julius Caeser's famous Latin phrase: "Veni, vidi, vici" (I came, I saw, I conquered." Firefly's file card should have read: "Veni, vidi, perdidit" (I came, I saw, I destroyed). This would have encouraged children to find out what it means, and been a very cool way to show that Firefly is well educated.
    The sculpting detail on Storm Shadow's mask indicate he is not wearing a balaclava; Firefly, version 1, on the other hand, is indeed wearing one. I found Fiefly's background and dedication to the art of weapon making (forging) to be a measure of his character. Firefly had always been an outlier in GI Joe. Happy to just stay in the background. Is that not what a ninja would actually do, assessing strengths and weaknesses, then, at the most opportune moment, strike?

    Great review, my son had both the grey and black versions. Hasbro should have matched those colors for the accessories.I thought the sculpt of the figure was good. The spinning top was IMHO was a silly accessory, they should have given him a submachine gun and maybe a spring loaded rocket launcher, which I know were popular with other figures in that time.

    Great video! Though I must say I hate what they did to one of my favorite Cobra figures. Bright green uniform for a covert saboteur? Obviously, he no longer wanted to work for Cobra and was hoping to be captured and sent to prison during a mission. Either that or the rest of Cobra's saboteurs were so bad at sneaking into places that Firefly was like, "Fine! I'll draw their attention! You just be sure not to screw up the sabotage!"
    I also agree with your assessment. The two figures are obviously variants rather than two different versions of the character.

    I always thought of this version of Firefly was dropped in the Jungle. I mean that green would easily blend in. I think that's the one thing missing in this figure if that green was mixed with some black camo over it. This would have been an amazing new figure based on an old one. But the version one is just utter perfection in itself. It was the one old figure I wish I owned when I was a kid.
