    I bought this figure back in the day only because he had "Captain" in the name and he was one of the few Joes that we knew the rank of.

    • @bobastu
      @bobastu 4 года назад

      We knew the rank of all of the Joes; the pay grade was on the file cards. Cool reason though, kids probably liked this figure due to that reason. It is funny as he outranked most of the GI Joe team, lol!

      @@bobastu I don't know the pay grades, and neither do most kids. So, the fact that Captain was part of his name is an excellent reason for buying him. Sgt. Slaughter too. Lt. Falcon as well.

    My brother got this guy for his birthday in 1991. It was his favorite figure. My brother LOVES football. He used the football grenades more than the machine gun. I got Pathfinder on my birthday that year.

    Great job detailing the issues regarding Pat Tillman with respect and a minimal amount of politicizing. It's clear you wanted to honor the man and his service, while nothing the controversies surrounding him.

    I could have sworn there was another version of this character with a spring-loaded rocket launcher, which my cousin had. It was probably this version with the rocket launcher from another figure.

    Your wife sure is a good sport (Thumbs up just for that!). I got Grid-Iron at Kay Bee Toys as a kid. I thought he was kind of cool in concept... but I didn't play with him that much after I got him. The missiles fell off his gun all the time. The elbow pads fell off the figure. I'm kind of suprised you didn't save him for Super Bowl Sunday. ha ha!

This is what this channel is all about. It’s always a pleasure to see hoody coco!

    I solved the yellow pants issue by simply giving him Bazooka's olive pants. Not perfect, but looked good to me. Also, I gave that silenced pistol to my Mercer v1. It seemed more the right size for him. Thanks for the review!

    I probably belong to the few who actually liked CAPT Grid-iron, if only for its helmet. I even built a four-man squad using this figure, stripped of football grenades, repainted in olive drab, and equipped with the 1990 SAW Viper's machinegun and backpack.

    Fun review of an "ahem" interesting figure. The visor is included as football players had started wearing visors on their helmets late '80s. I agree the figure had a really good head sculpt.
    I've known ROTC officers and Naval Academy officers, from Ensign up to Four Star Admiral. In my opinion, the junior officers, O-1, O-2, and first tour O-3, are the hardest for enlisted to get along with if they graduated from the Naval Academy. There is a quote, Academy and West Point Officers are taught: " “Enlisted men are stupid, but extremely cunning and sly, and bear considerable watching.” U.S. Army's Officer Guide, 1863."
    I have seen two O-3 officers having a discussion, which turned heated. The Academy grad knocked his Academy on the table twice; the ROTC grad immediately conceded. Ring knockers, they are both the same rank, put it on the same day, but the Academy grad reminded the ROTC grad who was "senior."
    Would GI Joe take out on of their own whom was incompetent...definitely. There is no room for incompetence in SOC! Love your vids!

    I love this figure. One thing I'll agree with you on, is the hand to hand combat specialist, and he comes with guns and grenades and stuff. But, I see no problem with the yellow. Scoop is yellow and a cool figure, as is Lightfoot and Airtight. Blowtorch has a lot of yellow. People complain for the sake of complaining. As for his missiles falling off, that's an easy fix. Just glue them on. They don't fire anyway, like a spring loaded one, and it looks much better with them all on anyway, and you wouldn't have to worry about losing them. The crotch is very brittle, that's a major flaw with this figure. I've had two of them where the crotch broke. You have to be careful. But, I definitely think Captain Grid-Iron is a top tier figure.

    I had this figure as a kid. Didn’t like his football grenades, machine gun missile launcher or pistol accessories so I sad them aside with my other accessory collection and gave him a black rifle. I also painted his pants olive green because the yellow didn’t look right. Also the yellow pants with the green made me think of the Green Bay packers and after changing his gun and painting his pants green he was more fun for me as a kid

    This is a figure where I hate the concept, but find the execution amazing in every regard.
    It has great paint apps, great sculpting detail, a great face sculpt (that really conveys he's probably a bit younger than most of the other Joes), weapon storage, good attention to how he's actually going to be able to hold his accessories (with the handles on the football grenades and the angled fore-grip on the missile launcher, and a general abundance of accessories.

    IMHO, one of the silliest Joes ever. It didn't help that his filecard made him sound like a bit of a loser. I think I used him mostly as a vehicle crewman. Now, if they had replaced the yellow with tan and toned down the accessories, he could have been a pretty solid Joe. As he is, I rate him near the bottom.

    Love the channel, I enjoy every curtique of the Joe toy line. However I feel he is being a little to critical of this particular figure. Tho completely ridiculous, considering the intent of this character, I always thought that the missle gun was pretty cool and I enjoyed it very much playing with it as a young lad. Keep in mind that imagination is the primary factor in the use if these objects and my imagination was boundless. With that being said, I found that the missle gun was one of the most well thought out design simply because of the hand grip on the weapon. For some reason it always worked for me. I don't know why. But for some reason that figure and accessories always brought me a lot of joy. Also for the record, my favorite GI Joe figure is the Alley Viper so there's that. Lol. Love the channel and your content, great job buddy, keep up the great work. HCC always takes me back to a time in my life before everything got sad and strange. Hats off to you sir. God bless!

    This figure seems to get a bad rap. Look up military pugil stick training, he looks the part and it makes sense with the hand to hand combat training specialty. The football grenades are a bit much, but I can see a training purpose for them. Michael Jordan was said to use a slightly larger ball for practice, which was more difficult to make into the basket. The same could be true for training in precision grenade throwing.

    Capt. Grid-Iron had a blink and you'll miss him appearance in one of the GI Joe comics (someone just commented it's issue #130, I'll take their word for it). I was familiar with him and several figures from 1990 when I was already out of GI Joe. My cousin Jeremy had Capt. Grid-Iron, as well as Subzero, Rampart, Skydive, Altitude, and Static Line from the 1990 line. I didn't know what to make of the figure and of the action figures that Jeremy owned from '90, Grid-Iron is the only one I never had much interest in getting.

      @@christianhafer9819 I agree that Captain Gridiron and 1990 are good.
      However, I have to respectfully disagree with you about 1990 being the last worthwhile year. 1991 had some good original figures like Big Ben Red Star, and Desert Scorpion.
      1992 was also an excellent year. It gave me a chance to get iconic 1980s characters that I didn't already have since I was too young or not yet tuned into G.I.JOE when they were first released. In my opinion, it's really in 1993 and 1994 that the line started to go off the rails.

    • @christianhafer9819
      @christianhafer9819 Год назад

      @John Soehnlen And I respectfully disagree with you. While 1991 definitely has a couple good ones. The ones you mentioned, and I'd also add Incinerators and Interrogator to that list as all time greats, '90 overall was the last great year. 91 had a few goodies, and anything after that was trash. I don't need Grunt or some other original character looking weird and nothing like the original. Too colorful and weird gimmicks after 1990.

    • @johnsoehnlen4781
      @johnsoehnlen4781 Год назад

      @@christianhafer9819 I agree that both Interrogator and Incinerator are excellent figures. The battle copters weren't great but I liked 3 of the 4 battle copter figures from 1991 and 1992. I agree that many of the launchers were unnecessary. When they worked right, they could be fun. Incinerator's projectile launcher easily comes to mind for one that didn't live up to expectations. You're right on the fact that there were lots of bad molds (Grunt) but there were some good new ones as well (Ace v2)
      In your opinion what was the best year of G.I. Joe? I lean towards 1986.

    • @christianhafer9819
      @christianhafer9819 Год назад +1

      @John Soehnlen I don't need 90's Ace. Lol. I like the Incinerators catapult. When it works good, it's pretty awesome. And it's different. Not the same missile launcher that looks ridiculous in the figures hands. Best year? Oooh. That's tough. 1985, '86, '88, '89, and 90, maybe. A toss up. '84 has a lot of good ones. Too close to call. Each year has a handful of my favorites in them. '85 has Alpine, Barbecue, Snow Serpent, the Crimson Guard, Dusty, Eels, Snake Eyes V2, Frostbite, Lampreys, Tollbooth, Lady Jaye, Flint, Footloose. I mean, wow! 1986 has Iceberg, one of my very, very faves. BATS, Beachhead, Vipers, Low-Light, AVAC, and Strato-Viper is another all time great pilot army builder. But, more in '85, I think. I can go through every year, but, you get my point. Every year I mentioned has maybe at least 10 all timers. But, '85, might have the most.

    This character is not a bad one in concept. An all American football lover goes to West Point and becomes a captain who loves commanding an infantry company. His code name fits his personality. The football accessories are dumb way to on the nose. At least he is not in a jersey. Give him a helmet similar to Hawk's, a vest in dark green similar to Roadblock or Muskrat, better painted legs, and a proper rifle. Do all that and this figure would have been great. N
    Nix that thing about the Joes "losing" him. That is BS that only works for drafted Vietnam solders with the idiot 2nd Lt characters. Over all Grid Iron's personality would work well with the Joes. Alpha personality, teamwork oriented, values enlisted.

    Cpt.grid-iron was a big part of my childhood, the only vintage toy that survived from my vintage collection and glad to have also the fss8. He made a cameo in Marvel's issue 130. But you forgot to mention his Rank how could have been between Duke and him and more importantly other then the episode pigskin commandos and season 02 of Dic Metal Head reunion were is revealed that Grid-iron (quaterback of his team) and Metal head (the mascot of the team) attendant the same high school. Finally in the cartoon His speech was peppered with football terminolog and wasn't hated by his teammates like in his file card at one point he would risk his life on line to save Pathfinder (his close friend as seen numerous Dic episodes) in D-day Alcatraz. His number 2 of my Joes figures.

    Without the assessories, the sculpt really doesn't indicate anything football. Not a bad looking figure. And that one-off comment with Scoop made me think. Is Capt. Grid-Iron the squad leader/defender of the Joe's yellow brigade? Support Joes like Airtight, Scoop, Blowtorch, Lightfoot and others that have very niche rolls that are not frontline fighting. Grid-Iron is a front line guy, and he'd be the gun for the gun-less Joes. But as an officer he'd be held back more, and be in that reserve position with the units that wouldn't be in the thick of it.

    I'll be honest... I dug the helmet ! Removable is ALWAYS a plus, it was distinctive and had a visor... what's not to like ? BUT those grenade accessories were cringe worthy though.
    What I thought would have been epic is if Hasbro had just decided to go with an entire special mission GiJoe football team. An entire team of brawny bucket-heads to call upon to bolster the ranks on certain hard-fighting melee missions or just to pummel the Cobra football team that time when Cobra Commander wanted to infiltrate and terrorize the Super Bowl ! That happened ... didn't it ...?

    Strip away the helmet and his accessories other than the backpack and the pistol and he isn't too bad of a figure. The yellow isn't as offensive to me as on worse GIJoe guys although I'd much prefer a muddier shade. The body above the torso is quite good. He would make for a low tier figure in my records.

    One of my childhood friends little brothers loved the rocketeer. But no rocketeer toys were made. So my friend convinced his brother that capt gridiron was supposed to be the rocketeer. 😂

    This is funny and sad at the same time, they created a character that the fans don't like, and according to the file card the Joe's don't like ether.

    Great review.
    Not a fan of Capt.GridIron.
    His uniform without accessories, looks as if he should be working with Airtight or Cleansweep.
    Wear that yellow and give him a gas mask instant bio troop.

    Good content but you need to fix those playlists. You have a "saved playlists" section with playlists made by another channel, which is unconventional and gives the impression you couldn't be bothered making them yourself (I don't know the story behind that, but that's how it appears to a newcomer). They only cover the basics and are all in reverse chronological order. A more comprehensive set of playlists, featuring content that isn't in your current selection such as vlogs would be a real improvement and a choice of "new to old" and "old to new" for your reviews would fix the chronology issue. I like to binge watch using playlists and seeing them back to front isn't optimal, especially with content such as yours that often references prior material. Yes I can click them manually in the correct order but that's inconvenient and defeats the object of having a playlist in the first place. RUclips provides some good tools for making and maintaining playlists, so it wouldn't be hugely difficult or time consuming and would be a great quality of life improvement for your audience.
    Anyway playlists aside I've been enjoying the content, I'm not a collector but I used to have lots of Action Force toys as a kid, I never even new about GI Joe. So learning about all this has been interesting and entertaining.

    HCC788, another fine review! Yep, I remember that silly episode of the DIC cartoon back in the day. Then this year I bought the complete DVD set and watched all the eps again. Captain Grid-Iron annoyed me on the show.

    Funny, how except of Hawk other officers seems rather pathetic - Major Attitude, this guy and... ok, Airforce guys were officers but that was a must I think. Flint was a warrant officer and I think the highest ranking bettern known character. Oh, there was also Falcon who was also Lieutant... which is higher than Flint's warrant officer?
