I remember my first time seeing a Captain Power commercial. I was home, sick from school, and some futuristic guy interrupted the Price is Right to ask for help. Pretty creative commercial. Barricade here was a bit past my toy playing time though.
I never had Barricade 1 or 2, but wish I did. I did have Barricade v3, from the Valor vs. Venom "Anti-Venom" 6-pack. Even with the "light vegetation" camo he has, he still wears gold(-ish) armor. He loses the RoboCop style helmet in favor of a hollowed Steel Brigade helmet in black with unique unit insignia.
I thought he was based on robocop ... captain power was a trip didn't last very long few episodes in my region it got cancelled pretty quick...nice work man Good to see you back on top again my friend
I do also see similarities with RoboCop, which also happened to have a toy line back in the day, despite the property being from an R-rated film. The RoboCop similarities kinda make even more sense if indeed the figure was initially intended to be an urban assault trooper a la Shockwave.
I kinda like Barricade. Probably one of the last Joe figures I got as a kid. He’s on my shelf behind Shockwave and some other police-urban-commando type guys… he’s the “Robocop” of the shelf, sticks out a little, but… I like it. It’s more nostalgia than anything, maybe. Two things I loved as a kid, hanging out… why not? (Except now I can’t unsee Captain Power…)
Oh the nostalgia. I loved Captain Power! Lt Tank Ellis played by Sven Ole Thorsen, Thorgrim from Conan the Barbarian and regular stuntman/baddie in Schwarzenegger movies!
I def feel the Capt. Power vibes (great show), but the name and weapon really seem like they are related to Barricade from C.O.P.S. and we know this wouldn't be the first time there was a connection between G.I.Joe and C.O.P.S. What do you all think?!
By 1992/93 I had *long* forgotten about Captain Power, I never really saw the comparison until now. Barricade was "gold Robocop" for me, and still present in the media because of the movie sequels. With silver instead of gold paint - he's all Robo. And maybe that's why he's in gold - to avoid copyright infringement. Kenner made the Robo toys, and they had the goofy backpack cap gun gimmick - I can see some influence there maybe? - So, perhaps it is a bit of both: A sculp influenced by Robo, with Captain Power colors?
I remember buying gears with his mech fighter and the cobra power fighter at kb toys on clearance for $5 with some other 4 for $10 clearance star brigade joes including orange roadblock and all 3 lunartix aliens back in the late 90's now those figures are worth a small fortune nowadays
If I remember right, it's like the Nintendo gun for Duck Hunt, and it will only work on CRT televisions, people have tried but our new flat screen lives just aren't compatible with where we came from.
The V1 was one of my favorites as a kid. His codename was Goldie because I was unoriginal but I traded guns and accessories with friends to get as many gold or blue weapons as I could, especially if they could be wedged into the rails of his backpack. He looked good with Headmans weird rifle. I later got the god awful battle armor just because it came with a blue and silver repaint of him whose name was Gears...I made them brothers. My team leader was a Crimson Guard Immortal with a cape stolen from a batman figure. I guess I had a thing for body armor. Also, fun fact, the reissue of G1 Optimus Prime with the pointless voice box and added spring loaded launchers used a remold of Barricade's gun with a peg handle
Barricade reminds me more of Robocop. I remember Captain Power, but I never connected the two. I guess I can kind of see it. I do not have a Captain Power ship/gun any more, but that was a fun little mini-game you put into your video. The Captain Power toy never did work with the television show (in my experience). I wonder if it works with your video?
This came out just as I was getting out of Joes. Up til now I thought his armor was padding more like Grand Slam. Was neat to see that Captain Power has a jet pack; forgot about that! P

I always thought he was an update to SciFi? In fact, I may have “retired” my green SciFi to be this blue guy? I wish I still had all these figures, but they were “lost in storage” in 2008. 😢🤬 only a random handful remain. Looking at the card backs profiles, IF the Classified series lasts long enough to get to this era, it will be a miracle. Some cool,redesigns/updates in there. Yep. Very underrated show and toyline. Shame though they killed off their only recurring female character in the finale, ended the show with a massive cliffhanger, and almost every figure and accessory suffers from super mega brittle plastic syndrome. Even the non metallic parts.
I didn't have the correct version of Barricade to have noticed the similarities to Captain Power. I can see it. Sci-fi, 1986, was usually the G.I.Joe member that was fighting Bio-Dreads and B.A.T.s over here more often than not alongside Major Hawk and Captain Power. Compared to all main line-up of 1992 figures, Barricade is really up-armored compared to the others. The extra back part of the upper-torso armor of the figure is really different compared to other figures, too. That extra detail does say that it could possibly have been some kind of "power armor." Consider which figure mold (Gears) was included with the 1994 Power Fighters, a good "power armor" figure. As per the file card, "...Robotic Battle Armor and computer circuitry. This process led to the development of the Power Fighter units that operate as an extension of the pilot's own body....." That's almost Captain Power's power suit angle. I didn't like that spring-fire launcher despite the backpack holder.
The card art looks more like Robocop in strange colors but it's lost on the toy with its wide helmet. Go look up Mattel's Big Trak vehicle & tell me it doesn't look like blatant inspiration for a certain Cobra vehicle... or the MOTU Roton, which Hasbro tipped on its side. Or even Mego's Buck Rogers line, which predates Joes with very similar body construction.

Cool looking figure, even if he is an homage to Captain Power. His code-name doesn’t make any sense however. He doesn’t make fortifications, nor is he a soldier who would secure a position and hold off enemy forces. He’s apparently a guy who would be busting down barricades. Why would they choose that as his code-name? Doesn’t really matter. Thanks for another great review
It bears repeating: rally cool to see the finished product, Hoodie! The Captain Power target on Dr. Mindbender was hilarious! I've always thought of Barricade's missile as the "hang loose missile." Might have been name sharing/usage to keep licensing rights? Even a few like Warpath were “lost” to Marvel, which is why a number of MLs have “Marvel’s Warpath” or similar. Will the missile from Shockwave v3 fit in this figure's missile launcher? That missile looks more like a battering ram to me and would fit the idea of Barricade as the "door-buster" on an urban assault squad.
Is there any validity to this claim? Not trying to be a party poop, but aside from the colors, I don’t see any correlation between Captain Power and Barricade. Navy and Gold look good together. They both have armor on. It’s not exactly the open and shuttest case ever. There’s also no logic behind it. Unless someone has said they meant it as an answer to the Captain, I’d say this is more likely a big coincidence. I enjoyed this guy when I was a kid. He definitely hung out with my DEF figures.
Considering the design ethos of 90's hasbro i'd consider him as much of a rip off of captain power as those itiallian ''alien 2'' movies were rip off sequels to the original alien. Very much their own thing, but also undeniably inspired by and riding the wave of the og.
I bought him and liked him...except the battering ram. The handle is too far back for him to balance holding it, and standing up with it in the backpack? Nope! They could have gone scarlet or crimson with the second version and he would look way better, is it just me or are his legs and the rest of him different oranges?! Blue and Gold is a far better combination, just ask Games Workshop why all the Space Marine stock art is Ultramarines 2nd company!

That gimmick may only work on crt tvs.🤔
i wouldn’t shoot ol hoodie
OMG! Are you spying on me? Last week you put in a clip from @SteveHe that I just started watching. This week you threw in a clip from Samurai Cop and I LITERALLY just watched the @RiffTrax version of that this afternoon. You're freaking me out man, FREAKING ME OUT!!! I'm gonna get "emotional damage" LMAO
