  • Going from Phnom Penh to Laos is not an experience for the faint of heart. Not only does it involve a long journey through Cambodia, you also have to cross the worst rated border crossing in the whole region.
The easiest way to do it is to buy a complete transfer from a tour company offering it, and pay whatever "fees" (bribes) the border agents come up with. But after doing some research, most companies sounded horrible, so we decided to take a sleeper bus to a town close to the border. That was a mistake, since sleeper buses in South East Asia are built for people that are no longer than 1.70 meters (I am 1.90)...
Once in the town we also had to deal with the exact same company we had decided against going with to take us to the border. And yes, we were also asked for a "fee" at the border. Did we pay it? Well, watch this episode to find out! Join us on one of the most memorable journeys I have ever taken, from Phnom Penh, Cambodia to Don Det, Laos! Let's go!

2:00 "I trust you a lot more than I trust me". Smart man! 😜

Where did you start the ferry ride from? Was wondering why you didn't just take a road, then realized the Google was fooling me. Some of the satellite pictures show the Mekong with a greenish tint, so it looks like forest instead of water. I know a couple of people who think that they can walk on water, so maybe they can also drive on water. 🤣

Oh I guess I never mentioned it in the video! After crossing the border we were taken to Nakasong, and from there we took the ferry 😄

Finally got a chance to finish watching. Might be better to break things up into 3 x 15 minutes vs 1 x 45 minutes. Not sure which is better re: RUclips algorithms, but much more watchable from my standpoint.

Yeah, that's always a tricky thing to decide! While filming I didn't realize how long it would get either, if I would have known I'd probably split the video up a bit already then! Thanks for the feedback!

Sleeper bus. Not appropriately sized for europeans, and definitely not for americans. I'm the same height as you, but around 10 kg heavier. Would have to dip myself in grease to be able to get in without getting stuck. Did I understand you correctly that the birth is for two people? If you're a single traveler they pair you with another person, hopefully of the same sex?

Hahahaha, I'm so happy I lost a few kilos in Asia, otherwise I might not have been able either 😂 And yes you share it with one other person, if you're travelling solo that person will be randomly assigned. And if they accidentally pair you up with someone of the opposite sex, they might move you/the other person!
I don't think this is a common setup in Asia, but that seems to be the way they do it in Cambodia 😅
