Today we begin out adventures in Laos by first crossing the border with Zelda (my motorbike) and getting our first impressions of Laos.
Laos is a landlocked country next to Thailand - Cambodia - China - Vietnam and Myanmar and somewhere that is relatively untouched by mass tourism.
There are so many places that I can't wait to explore but as this first episode details, we need to get into the country first and then get to know the capital city of Vientiane.
This series was filmed in November 2022 ✌️🇱🇦 ✌️

I went to Lao in 2003. You could go inside the arch and there was a balcony around the top. Is that not open now?
It's currently closed sadly

Your editing is absolutely astounding paddy. Especially doing this on the road. Excited for the series ahead!
I love Laos where I spent time in 1973 during the Vietnam war. I had the most amazing adventures in this beautiful country such as witnessing two coup d’etats including the bombing of the Royal Palace, arrested for breaking the curfew, later released. Vientiane was full of spooks, a delightful small town along the mighty Mekong river, I was living at the notorious Hotel Lido, on arrival there they carried out a deceased Frenchman. Luang Prabang was the old royal capital, such a beautiful place, in the distance one could hear the occasional sound of mortars blasting targets not far away. The beauty of this unique place was matched by the locals’ hospitality I also visited other places in Laos, especially a town named Ban Houei Sai in the North of Laos right in the Golden Triangle where the opium trade was in full bloom, as were the poppy fields outside of town. As it turned out Laos became a Communist country, the King of Laos was replaced by his brother who became the President of the Socialist Republic of Laos. Only in Laos ! It is such a special country, the people are genuinely friendly and helpful, as long as visitors respect the feelings of modesty while in this Buddhist community.I am feeling privileged to have experienced what is one of the most unique and beautiful countries in Asia.
So u were in the American army? I only wonder how many people u butchered and dropped nukes on
Laos is HIGH on my bucket list thanks to your incredible videos!!! Thank you for leaving google maps links 💕 makes it SO helpful for future travel planning!
This is my new favourite youtube channel - thank you Paddy for taking us with you; your videos are always interesting, relaxing and beautifully shot - they make my days better and I cannot wait to follow your latest adventure in Laos! x
Ah thanks 🙏👍
Wonderful video Paddy
Yes buddy, we are off starting the Laos series 🤟
Bringin back some memories when we were there in 2019. Did the bordercrossing at the same place but it was with train and bus.
And what a paperwork you did via that agency, good research mate, well done 👊
Can't wait for the next episode, this was a very great first video. Thanks for that 🙏
And as always Paddy, C Ya in the next one, cheers 🙌🍻
Laos is my favorite place in SEA! Nong Khiaw/Muang Ngoy are the most incredible places!
Beautiful , Great vid as always.
Nice one paddy looking forward to the new adventure 👍😎👌🤝🙏
Sweet I visited Laos in 1992 and am excited to be returning there in January!
the arrival of incongruous hard rock cafe into the historical area amongst temples and Wats is a sure sign the former quiet beautiful laos is being dismantled, by malevolent forces
i really like Paddy Doyle's vlogs, they're so authentic.
been waiting for this....
Finally! I have been waiting for this. My wife is from Savannakhet in Laos and I have been there 3 times. But I have not had time for a real tour yet. So now? I have my Vietnamese coffee (The best coffee there is in my opinion) and I am really looking forward to this journey with you. Thank you so much for traveling the country I hope to retire in later in life, with your cameras and insightful comments ;)
Good to see you got there in the end Paddy great viewing again,,,,peace and happiness
Awesome. Always happy to be able to see the world through your eyes. :)
Glad to hear you say the name of the country correctly. LAO. Very good. I saw someone wrote the Laotian. There really is no such word. My wife is LAO. The country is LAO .the language is LAO. Not a put down and the LAO people will not correct you as they don't want to hurt your feelings or sometimes they just don't care. Have spent many years there off and on. Going back in Jan. Can't wait. m
Lao is a people from a country called Laos.
Thanks, for your information. We are traveling there this coming Friday from Bangkok and using a travel agency. Thanks again, I really enjoy your travels.
Great video, was there 25 years ago but I don't really remember it. I cant wait to watch how your travels go
, Thank you friend for eyes opener...Great show your trip was such a wonderful
You know why agents are so often needed in South EA to smooth things out, sometimes even on the simplest matters? You will find the answer inside a brown envelope. Btw, the best currency exchange rates (over the official spot rate) in Vientiane are found at Ave Lane Xiang, just a bit north of Talat Sao market.
Level 3, bring it on Paddy!!!! This video was already a great introduction to Lao!!!
thx Patty, great video will visit soon
The most awaited vidoe
Very informative.
Thanks Paddy 👍
Lao and Thailand might seem similar on the surface, but the difference is mostly in the people, through interactions, we could learn so much more new pov.
Can't wait to explore some more ☺️
Welcome to 🇱🇦 and enjoy your trip here❤
Welcome to Vientiane, thank you for coming to Laos. Hope you enjoy your trip.
I’ll be in Laos during march and your Channel is very helpful for me
Super good quality of VDO taken by drone, impressive. Thanks
Hi Paddy I am glad to hear you like Lao, as I agree with you complexly. I have lived in Lao for the last 16 years, 4 of which was managing "Pan's Place " G/H in Vang Vieng from 2010-14. One small point I would make is that Lao may have an "S" at the end of it, but it is silent like the "S" on the end of Paris. I now live out in the county side out side Pakxan, just of route 13. If you would like to have a chat with someone who was first in Lao before you were born(1973) drop me a line to arrange a day for it.
Lao is a people from a country called Laos.
@@oneviwatara9384 The Lao people never pronounce the "S", I guess they would know best what is correct.
@@chrisperkins7331 since when is the s in Paris silent?
@@patbeulah6208 Ask any French native speaker, it has been forever. I understand English speakers seem to think their way of pronouncing a word is the right way, but it often is not. Just look at how many city names in the old British empire now say the names of their cities the way they were before the Brits arrived.
Congrats Paddy you can take your buddy.across the border and continue journey again.Good luck Chuck.
The Olde "You have to go thorugh an agency routine!" Tourists are easy targets!
Congratulations. Your on your way😀
So true about not expecting things to make sense, just smile and wai and be patient. This is the essential attitude in this part of the world.
Finally in Laos! Well done Paddy. I went on a trip to Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia in 2012, and Laos was the surprise of the trip. So beautiful and less touristy! Was a laid back culture compared to the bustle of Vietnam. Looking forward to this series!
Cheers 🥂
cheers @paddy Doyle. i liked the video, the storytelling, the atmosphere of lao.
Great vlog brother 🙏🙏
Thank you 🙌
Loving that classic No Fear tee shirt. I covered my entire BMX bike in No Fear stickers back in the late 90s.
Stay safe, don't forget to drive on the right hand side of the road. I'm looking forward to see your journey.
Hi Paddy
You captured how I feel when I ride my W-175 on the back roads of Issan. Back on December 1,
Heading there next week. Looks very tranquil
Hey Paddy, I was just in Vientiane. Lao little less than 2 months ago. Love the fresh warm air there. You should go back in the evenings, cool lights and water show. Hope you enjoy Lao
Lets roll , nice start to theadventure .
I love Laos. That drive you have coming up from up to the north to Luang Prabang (think that’s it?) I done in a Ford Range, the best drive over ever done in my life!
Thanks for your video's Paddy! Used to watch them from home, now I'm watching them with a bia saigon from Vietnam :)
Helpful vidéo 👍🙏🏻
Cool, I am planning on going there next year 👌
Laos is the most bombed country in the world. 20 years ago i first went from Thailand. Even then there was border crossing problems. We hired a minibus as a group. A tour of Vientiane. We were all excited. We were driven to the tour guides family restaurant. The tour guides family souvenir shop. The tour guides mini mart. We couldn't wait to get back to Thailand. Your video has made me think that there is more to see than the family business in Laos. Looking forward to the sights.
Việt Nam mới nhiều nhất
🤣
The bomb situation is absolutely terrible and should get more attention
Hello, since you've been there so many times, the S is silent right?
@@geemoney138 in laotian langauege S is not pronounced.
❤🙏🏼Paddy. I truely hope you will have a Fantastic trip! In a way a strict crossing means they want to protect their country! It was good you visited the history of the war, which I am sure many of us did not know so much about. Have a great week.💞💋
The reason you need an agency is because they wanted more money, not that they wanted to protect the country. If the reason is protection, no additional money is required in order to cross. Just have the proper documents and you’re good to go.
Brilliant Paddy! Bring it on :) and get some rest haha
nice video paddy........
Hi Paddy, a fellow englishman who follows your trips. I will be i Vientiane next Tuesday for two days and then on to my girlfriends village Xanakham. Be great to have a beer if our schedules cross. Keep up the good work> great content.
ทำคลิปออกมาได้สวยเหมือนเดิม มุมมองน่าสาใจเสมอหวังว่าจะมีประสพการณ์ที่ดี เดินทางปลอดภัยครับ.
I never liked Laos but had to go there in the old days for Thai Visa coverage and I will stay in Thailand till I die. sixty-five now going on 66 this Nov, 12th. I live with 14 years younger Thai wife in a village of Nakhon Sawan all Thais mostly. The monetary system is totally wacko in Laos...
What a story. Yeah, seeing other people struggle to get into Laos with their bikes, watching their frustration immediately BEFORE you get into the queue to do the same yourself, albeit with proper assistance, puts adrenaline and stress level to the max. No wonder you are mentally tired right after.
I can't wait to see "the real Laos" out in the countryside. Your filming and drone skills are excellent, and improving daily, so this series promises to be epic!
Ah thanks Beverly 💝
Appreciate your determination and enthusiasm when you start up another adventure. its what makes you top of your game. Thank you.
Cheers Roger 😘
Go Paddy go you beast! Best regards the Vicar.
Hi mate, loving the vids. What mic do you use? Thanks 😀
Paddy, Take Care and Take Your Rest and Sleep ! Good Luck to You from Holland. 🙏
You should show the viewers how you take your shorts with your camera, drone etc and make your videos for us to watch. A class on how you do all this
So looking forward to this Laos series, thank you Paddy, love 🇱🇦 from 🇬🇧
Appreciate your effort, Paddy. I had been in Luang Namtha, Muang Sing, Huay Xai, Nong Khiaw, Vang Vieng, and Luang Prabang back in 2020 right before the pandemic. It was fun and there were moments which I felt out of the real world. Enjoy it and have a good one 😊👌
I can't nt wait
I liked your remark about bottling a culture, quite recognizable.
I was just there in October. Was wonderful! Returning in 2 weeks! Stayed at the Thavisouk Island Hotel overlooking the Nam Song River and the beautiful mountains in Vang Vieng. Have you tried the Beerlao yet? Very good, too good. Really loving your videos. Have any questions feel free to ask. Oh I and my friend went kayaking on the Nam Song River. Wear sun block!!! Also tubed the cave. What a gorgeous place! Enjoy.
Annabelle Mekong Cafe was a VERY NICE Coffee (or tea) ☕/ bakery shop with Aircon❄.
Highly recommended.
Excited for this new Laos adventure in your ever ongoing adventures Paddy.
Mong cho người anh em Lào càng phát triển thêm nữa
Awesome thanks for sharing. Yes you must use travel agent because they speak the language and can make a deal with borders officers
Thank you for the information about the Vietnam war. Didn't know that Laos also suffered so much.
the flavour of architectural history in almost every Asian country is both unique and captivating Paddy. Just beautiful. Definitely on my bucket list when I next head over to Vietnam, just a short flight away!
Great start, what's a series without a little bit of drama to kick things off!?!
At least Zelda is with you!
Cheers Shane 😘
Like it!!
Laos 🇱🇦 sounds fun. One day the Buddha park would be a great venue for a fashion show.
hi Paddy! love the videos as usual! Question tho: do they have those agencies at the border crossing in Chang Rai too?
I am planning to rent a Bike in Chiang Mai and cross into laos for a few weeks! any suggestions?
We LOVE that feeling too!! Exploring something new/ new places is the best!! Have fun in Laos!!
Glad to see that you made it there in one piece! Love the video and cannot wait to see more of your adventures in Laos! Bon voyage 😊
I see you in Vang Vieng Laos, you Wash your motorcycle:). Like your videos.
***SCREEEEEEAM**** OMG!! I am SUPER excited for this adventure! No one can do Laos justice like you. I am so glad you are there to give us first hand exploration and journey. I know you will not disappoint! :)
Ah thanks Kia 💘
All your videos are informative and entertaining to watch. How were you able to fly a drone around in Laos? I brought mine last year, but didn't know who to ask for permission.
Nice glad you're in Laos 13:27 the drone footage plays backwards
Me and my lady got across the border from Vietnam into Laos a week ago with our Honda 110s. It took a long time talking with officials at the border but we managed to get it done without paying any liaisons. We have not seen a single Vietnam plated bike since we got here and every local has been amazed to see our Vietnam plates here in Laos. I think it may be possible that we were the first to get through since Covid with our bikes. I won't tell you my secret until I successfully get into Cambodia and back into Vietnam in the next couple months since I don't want everyone to ruin my special trick. But we have all our required paperwork and they never even gave us any problems about not having insurance or licenses.
Amazing! Where might be a good spot for drones to land and take off in in Vientiane please?
I hope you to explore Nakhonnayok with your Big Bike Gang.Have a nice trip in Laos.❤❤
Something worth noting: Much of what may be posted online, in FB groups or even still left-over on more official websites MAY NOT be the most current border/entry policy being practiced on whatever particular day you'll try and cross. Please everyone, take Paddy's advice and forewarning on that. Likewise, things I'd seen posted online as 'current' were NOT applicable to me as they'd changed just days earlier, some NEW things I needed and then some 'requirements' were no longer being required at all.
Great to see you in Laos Paddy were sooo excited to see this Next Level adventure and my wife just said she loves watching your adventures because she said you inspire us yo explore 😀
Awesome! Thank you!
You're a brave man driving in Laos Paddy!
Very inspiring. The beauty of Vientiane shines through. You make me want to visit and beyond. I look forward to further adventures. Hope you feel better, get some good sleep and find good clean food.
Hi Paddy, I've just found your channel and love it! Amazing videos, congrats! My partner and I are planning few months in SEA from end of March and I was wondering if you're aware of the burning season they talk about in general affecting Northern Thailand and Northers Laos. Also wanted to check how did you manage to fly your drone Did you have to apply for any permission in advance? Thank a lot :)
Judy, were you able to find answers to this question and/or did you end up starting your trip this past March? I’m hoping to visit Thailand and Laos next March or April and the burning season is my biggest concern. Seems like limited options as far as when to visit northern Thailand/Laos if you want to avoid both smoke and rain! Curious your experience…. Thanks!
Hi Paddy, the next time you feel really jet lagged and tired, try to book a guesthouse or hotel that has a swimming pool in it. Just dip and immerse in the pool and it will make you feel a whole lot better
Glad you you finally made it into Laos. Looking forward to this series. 🙂🙏
Hope you enjoy it!
I like your drone shots… what do you use?
Sabaidee Paddy to Laos
I am really positively surprised that you did cross into Laos on a 125 cc motorbike.
Never ever saw one of them here.
However. There are many Thai big bikes coming over. I on the other hand have crossed into Thailand several times without any problems at all. But anyway. Welcome and try to come to Xayabouly. To visit the Elephant centre.
Have a great time and enjoy the Beer Lao.
Best Oliver
Hiya Paddy, great new intro. Love the title of the series. Let the adventures begin.
That was not easy to get into Laos. Very informative. Topman for helping the other bikers.
Beautiful gardens and statues. Glad you are listening to your body and having a nap.
Cat napping always makes me feel crap too.
Great drone footage.
Haha, I can see why you thought they were protestors.
The ceiling in the arch is beautiful.
I am not surprised you were mentally drained.
As you mentioned. You had a lot riding on making it over.
Beautiful temples. Really informative. Great start to the series.
I'm looking forward to the next one. Happy Sunday.
Thanks Nicky 😌
Just back in Thailand after a 30 days trip in Laos on a thai honda click 125cc. Border crossing not so difficult and you don't need a agent. Cross the border to Laos where theres no bridge (Chong Mek in my case) and back to Thailand in Chiang Kong. They don't want motorcycle under 250cc on the bridges but if you insist they will let you go or will send you to a border crossing with no bridge. Green book in your name and a 40baht paper work from thai transport office needed before travel. Everything else you solve at border, 300 baht in Laos when crossing plus 40 dollars visa then 200 baht crossing back to Thailand paid at Laos border. Insurance for 30 days in Laos around 5€ and its mandatory 👍
I neither have experience crossing between Laos and TH my self nor having car, though listening to your story, I'm surprised how many Thai people ridding bicycle and motorbike crossing to Laos and also having seen foreign officers crossing for cycling. Have fun and enjoy your trip in Lao PDR
Yes, Thais like riding motorcycles into Laos as well as expats. However, given the difficulties, it's far more common to have cars crossing the border, which is far easier. I've driven my car into Laos 16 times and a Lao car into Thailand around 5 or 6 times now. I've never driven a motorcycle into Laos, but I did try once (at Vientiane). Before I arrived at the 1st Friendship Bridge, I tried Beung Kan, 130km east. I was told by a local, that the Lao side refuses entry to motorcycles so it's probably not worth trying but I could give it a go anyway. I decided not to, so I went to Nong Khai.
In Nong Khai, I was told I needed a tour, but it would take time to organize the paperwork. I didn't know who to turn to, or that an agent at the border could help. It didn't really matter, as I was only headed for Vientiane and my colleague lent me a motorcycle to use while there. The thrill of riding my own bike would have been more fun (besides, his bike was rather small and old, just a Honda Dream) but for the measly 20km from the bridge into the city and going around town, his bike was perfectly fine.
I love Laos! Make sure you check out nong kiau, try booking a night at nong khiaw riverside. Blew my mind.
We are a traveling family and I think my kids are your biggest fans. Everywhere we go, they watch all your video's on the place. We are currently in Chiang Mai and they are so excited. Thank you for all the great inspiration!
Lovely start dude.. looks gorgeous, looking forward to the next one!
Thanks a ton!
Vientiane great city, cope very interesting and just terrible all the bombs. Can recommend Sailomyen Cafe and Hostel to stay, amazing place
First overseas trip I ever took with the woman that would become my wife.
Incredible trip. Fun and danger and drama and friends. Travel is the best thing.
