Today we begin out adventures in Laos by first crossing the border with Zelda (my motorbike) and getting our first impressions of Laos.
Laos is a landlocked country next to Thailand - Cambodia - China - Vietnam and Myanmar and somewhere that is relatively untouched by mass tourism.
There are so many places that I can't wait to explore but as this first episode details, we need to get into the country first and then get to know the capital city of Vientiane.
This series was filmed in November 2022 ✌️🇱🇦 ✌️

I love Laos where I spent time in 1973 during the Vietnam war. I had the most amazing adventures in this beautiful country such as witnessing two coup d’etats including the bombing of the Royal Palace, arrested for breaking the curfew, later released. Vientiane was full of spooks, a delightful small town along the mighty Mekong river, I was living at the notorious Hotel Lido, on arrival there they carried out a deceased Frenchman. Luang Prabang was the old royal capital, such a beautiful place, in the distance one could hear the occasional sound of mortars blasting targets not far away. The beauty of this unique place was matched by the locals’ hospitality I also visited other places in Laos, especially a town named Ban Houei Sai in the North of Laos right in the Golden Triangle where the opium trade was in full bloom, as were the poppy fields outside of town. As it turned out Laos became a Communist country, the King of Laos was replaced by his brother who became the President of the Socialist Republic of Laos. Only in Laos ! It is such a special country, the people are genuinely friendly and helpful, as long as visitors respect the feelings of modesty while in this Buddhist community.I am feeling privileged to have experienced what is one of the most unique and beautiful countries in Asia.

You know why agents are so often needed in South EA to smooth things out, sometimes even on the simplest matters? You will find the answer inside a brown envelope. Btw, the best currency exchange rates (over the official spot rate) in Vientiane are found at Ave Lane Xiang, just a bit north of Talat Sao market.

Hi Paddy I am glad to hear you like Lao, as I agree with you complexly. I have lived in Lao for the last 16 years, 4 of which was managing "Pan's Place " G/H in Vang Vieng from 2010-14. One small point I would make is that Lao may have an "S" at the end of it, but it is silent like the "S" on the end of Paris. I now live out in the county side out side Pakxan, just of route 13. If you would like to have a chat with someone who was first in Lao before you were born(1973) drop me a line to arrange a day for it.

We were all excited. We were driven to the tour guides family restaurant. The tour guides family souvenir shop. The tour guides mini mart. We couldn't wait to get back to Thailand. Your video has made me think that there is more to see than the family business in Laos. Looking forward to the sights.

Me and my lady got across the border from Vietnam into Laos a week ago with our Honda 110s. It took a long time talking with officials at the border but we managed to get it done without paying any liaisons. We have not seen a single Vietnam plated bike since we got here and every local has been amazed to see our Vietnam plates here in Laos. I think it may be possible that we were the first to get through since Covid with our bikes. I won't tell you my secret until I successfully get into Cambodia and back into Vietnam in the next couple months since I don't want everyone to ruin my special trick. But we have all our required paperwork and they never even gave us any problems about not having insurance or licenses.

Something worth noting: Much of what may be posted online, in FB groups or even still left-over on more official websites MAY NOT be the most current border/entry policy being practiced on whatever particular day you'll try and cross. Please everyone, take Paddy's advice and forewarning on that. Likewise, things I'd seen posted online as 'current' were NOT applicable to me as they'd changed just days earlier, some NEW things I needed and then some 'requirements' were no longer being required at all.

Hi Paddy, the next time you feel really jet lagged and tired, try to book a guesthouse or hotel that has a swimming pool in it. Just dip and immerse in the pool and it will make you feel a whole lot better

    Sabaidee Paddy to Laos
I am really positively surprised that you did cross into Laos on a 125 cc motorbike.
Never ever saw one of them here.
However. There are many Thai big bikes coming over. I on the other hand have crossed into Thailand several times without any problems at all. But anyway. Welcome and try to come to Xayabouly. To visit the Elephant centre.
Have a great time and enjoy the Beer Lao.
    Best Oliver

Hiya Paddy, great new intro. Love the title of the series. Let the adventures begin.
That was not easy to get into Laos. Very informative. Topman for helping the other bikers.
Beautiful gardens and statues. Glad you are listening to your body and having a nap.
Cat napping always makes me feel crap too.
    Great drone footage.
Haha, I can see why you thought they were protestors.
The ceiling in the arch is beautiful.
I am not surprised you were mentally drained.
As you mentioned. You had a lot riding on making it over.
Beautiful temples. Really informative. Great start to the series.
I'm looking forward to the next one. Happy Sunday.

Just back in Thailand after a 30 days trip in Laos on a thai honda click 125cc. Border crossing not so difficult and you don't need a agent. Cross the border to Laos where theres no bridge (Chong Mek in my case) and back to Thailand in Chiang Kong. They don't want motorcycle under 250cc on the bridges but if you insist they will let you go or will send you to a border crossing with no bridge. Green book in your name and a 40baht paper work from thai transport office needed before travel. Everything else you solve at border, 300 baht in Laos when crossing plus 40 dollars visa then 200 baht crossing back to Thailand paid at Laos border. Insurance for 30 days in Laos around 5€ and its mandatory 👍

I neither have experience crossing between Laos and TH my self nor having car, though listening to your story, I'm surprised how many Thai people ridding bicycle and motorbike crossing to Laos and also having seen foreign officers crossing for cycling. Have fun and enjoy your trip in Lao PDR

Yes, Thais like riding motorcycles into Laos as well as expats. However, given the difficulties, it's far more common to have cars crossing the border, which is far easier. I've driven my car into Laos 16 times and a Lao car into Thailand around 5 or 6 times now. I've never driven a motorcycle into Laos, but I did try once (at Vientiane). Before I arrived at the 1st Friendship Bridge, I tried Beung Kan, 130km east. I was told by a local, that the Lao side refuses entry to motorcycles so it's probably not worth trying but I could give it a go anyway. I decided not to, so I went to Nong Khai.
In Nong Khai, I was told I needed a tour, but it would take time to organize the paperwork. I didn't know who to turn to, or that an agent at the border could help. It didn't really matter, as I was only headed for Vientiane and my colleague lent me a motorcycle to use while there. The thrill of riding my own bike would have been more fun (besides, his bike was rather small and old, just a Honda Dream) but for the measly 20km from the bridge into the city and going around town, his bike was perfectly fine.
