Yea the reason you don't wanna do that against a slashing type weapon like that or a halberd, is because you cannot deflect a strike. Remember, it's not a sword, you aren't out spacing your opponent. The Naginata is too heavy for a regular deflect.

The Naginata's swept-up tip can be used to attack the insides of the armpits, the thighs, and the groin. You can just imagine the amount of bleeding that can cause in real life combat.
If sparring rules don't allow for this, it is not the Naginata's fault. The rules then determine which weapon gives you the most advantage in this controlled sparring environment.

It's an excellent weapon, as stabbing weapons are in general. It isn't good at point blank range, but that can be easily mitigated by keeping your distance and delivering mid-run stabs. The advantages of its range are far greater than the disadvantages.
Its main disadvantage is that it isn't a good "just in case" weapon. You can't carry it on your waist as a spare, or easily take it with you while traveling.

That’s not how you use Naginata. It shouldn’t be so close to one’s body. It’s a Katana with longer handle he should extend his arms and create distance between enemy and make swift cuts during enemy opening.
