- Koyama Noriko Sensei and his students demonstrating Yoshin-ryu Naginata-jutsu during the 42nd Nihon Kobudo Embutaikai held at the Nippon Budokan on February 3rd, 2019. The event also commemorated the 40th anniversary of the Nihon Kobudo Kyokai.
Yoshin-ryu was developed in the early Tokugawa period (c. 1660) by Akiyama Shirobei Yoshitoki. Yoshin-ryū Naginata-jutsu stemmed from Yoshin-ryū and specializes in techniques of Naginata, the Japanese halberd. In addition to the Naginata techniques, the school also teaches with the spear (Sojutsu), the short stick (Hanbo) and the chain sickle (Kusarigama).

I never thought I'd see the day when an unassuming granny straight up shank a man with his own wakazashi.
Can't underestimate grandma's man. They've been using wooden weapons like the spoon for centuries.
@@MoldyOog God forbid she pulls out the rolling pin. That's Game Over. You can try escaping, bit it will do little good. Dread it, run from it, the rolling pin always arrives.
Wait 'till you see what a grandma can do with a hickory stick.
Yeah, I'm normally not a big fan of this kind of ritualized show-fighting but super-granny really won me over!
I know this is purely exhibition but in a situation like that I feel like that would not have worked. The only thing I can think of is that throwing the weapon could somewhat disorient the person or throw off their timing. Maybe if there was a sort of feint or aikido type move to transition
some of the kimono these women are wearing are beautiful. i love the colors and designs on them.
A newbie's tip
: Fighting a polearm weapons, you need to space yourself "Not" in the blade zone. Shaft/handle/pole itself is a fine way to protect both you and enemy. If you stop your enemy by grabbing the pole, they're as good as dead
I think that perhaps it you that is the 'newbie' with regard to Ko-ryu/ naginata-jutsu as there are several techniques across most traditions where you let go of the shaft with one hand and kill the opponent with your kodachi or their own. Also as these are essentially 'samurai traditions' dying in the act of killing ones opponent can be perfectly acceptable, if not ideal.
The techniques of getting close was used during the era where people wore armor to war. They still practice it but it's not meant for unarmored combat. You can check out "Samurai armor battle" on youtube to get an example. You grab the spear and then try to grapple him to take him down, hold him there and then stab into a gap with a smaller blade. They found this trouble first during the mongol invasion and as armor became more body fitting they had to learn grappling.
Japanese kid: But I don't want to do my homework!
Japanese mom: [grabs naginata]
Japanese kid: [becomes doctor]
Legend 🤣 🤣 🤣
@Aden hui sometimes you laugh at true stories.
Legend never die
No this is not a real naginata this is for practises the real one had blades at the top point of it
@@polardeastora7268Don't you get it dumbo? unless mom has an intention to kill, why would she grab a Naginata in first place ? when a karate chop or a Judo throw suffice enough?
I don't think she meant to throw it at 5:30 lmao, but man that was such great quick thinking on grabbing the wakizashi
She straight up stabbed him with it and then took it for her own
It’s a kata, not sparring. So it was on purpose.
It hit him right in the face, it was on purpose. Plus that was a great surprise throw, no tells
she wouldnt have made it if he dint stop the katana tho
@@skull8062 It's a kata, not a real fight. The point of it wouls be to learn that it wasnt fast enough and to try to do it faster
This is nice.. As a HEMA halberd student, I can say that all of these technique was really practical and neat looking. Might also do some cross training with naginata user someday..
Halberd hmmm
Hema versus naginata sounds like a very very interesting fight

5:30 That old woman just threw a freaking weapon at him!
and that fat dude was so mad didn't even take his short sword back.
@@poorboi8093 That's funny XD
Pow!! Right in the kisser 😂😂😂
She's so awesome, I thought that was a mistake.
Hey, if it works... That kata must be really hard to execute properly, though.
I like the fact they are fighting in actual kimonos, because they would be exactly the kind of clothing they'd be fighting in during the warring periods in Japan.
Everybody gangsta till the old lady pulls out the stick sword
どう言う事?
Can't underestimate grandma's man. They've been using wooden weapons like the spoon for centuries. 5:30
as a kendoka, jodoka i i am so in awe of the first naginata kata ,so fluid and beautiful to watch ! im almost jealous!
I love how they run daintily towards each other before dealing deadly blows. So polite even in combat. Respect!
I doubt in actual combat they'd be " dainty".

Merci beaucoup de charger ce video Monsieur Erard! Très rare de regarder une lutte de Naginata. Impressionante!
One thing i see, its not fully choreographed. And the presence of mind of the elderly woman when she lost her naginata was fantastic
A rare treat, many thanks 🙏🏼
6:50 yeah that's what happens when you spin around in a fight.
Great vid tho.
I knew some idiot would point out that single thing
Star Wars Spinning Intensifies
@@Welther47 He's actually not an idiot for pointing out. I did kendo, and you aren't supposed to turn your back. This is a demonstration
@@Kitajima2 This scenario was likely to demonstrate chasing a retreating enemy. He spun to check for obstacles behind him while trying to get some distance.
@@Kitajima2 you aren't supposed to, but doesn't mean you can't. Once I was so close with my opponent in a very awkward position, could not push from the angle so I spinned in a 360º motion in order to get the angle and hit a backward kote. Later I was told that I didn't score the ippon because my posture wasn't right while retrieving.
Of course it doesn't mean you should go there spin attacking, it's just not like forbidden

Я тоже!))
Spears dont get nearly as much publicity as swords. Glad to see this martial art is still practice.
Medieval Japan had a society similar to ancient Spartans. All the men would go to war or reside in the capital with their lord's clan for large parts of the year. The women stayed home and pretty much had to rely on each other to run the villages, and defend them if need be. So many Japanese women would have very practical martial arts skills up until probably the 1800s.
I ain't messing with that old lady.
She'll gut you with your own weapon 🤣. I wouldn't have thought as quick as she did
I’m in love with the green kimonos girl 😍

I love all the ... "situational examples" in Forms and Kata.
Very awesome, the balance between physical and mental is felt
Awesome wish there was more yoshin ryu.
Never underestimate a lady, young or old. These ladies were feminine, fighters and good too.
In the samurai eras only they could practice this but now anyone can from rich to poor from old to young .I adore Japanese culture
Did you see that??! That was amazing!
かっこいい!
美しい!
杖も剣も使われるのですね。
Their clothes look so pretty
Somebody recently claimed in an argument that Naginata was heavy and unwieldy, while Nodachi are easier to use, lol.
*ok bro*
not sure any weapon that people continued to use would be unweildy. maybe ceremonial stuff, sure, but if its a weapon, than people only would keep using them if they work. and the naginata was quite popular for women and on the battlefield.
The nodachi’s were used only when mounting a horse tho
お着物で薙刀ってカッコイイですね!とくに振袖でたすき掛けをしている人を初めて見ましたが、長いお袖が後ろに垂れてとてもかわいいです😅👍
Viewers form other countries interested by Japanese kimono, you may notice younger girls are wearing kimono with very long sleeves, which is usually worn by unmarried women, called furisode (a type of kimon).

Cant wait for someone to add lightsabers into this
"Never trifle with a samurai's wife" is the vibes I'm getting from all of this...
Every samurai bride was expected to carry a Tantō, a type of dagger, with her when she joined her husbands home. It was usually kept in the obi or the sleeves and would be used in self defence or for suicide if necessary.
If Operation Downfall would ever happen, this is what US Marines would have to face.
They have great skill and power

5:30 why would you throw the weapon at him? shouldn't having a longer weapon and keeping distance give you an advantage in the first place?
To demonstrate the principle. The sword is the deadlier weapon. If it cuts behind the metal portion of the Naginata, then the business end of the Naginata can be severed. (though not likely if the naginata user knows what shes doing) Still, in battle things happen. The principle here of the kata is that her weapon is severed or broken, so she uses it to take the initiative and use his own weapon.
Now . .. she makes a lot of mistakes, which makes this confusing. When she gets the initiative, she should also take his balance if shes going to close distance after throwing her weapon. Instead, she just kind of goes directly for the short sword, when she should be taking control of his center of gravity first touch. He totally could have cut her head the way she does it.
You could still demonstrate the principle without throwing the naginata, by lunging and letting the weapon slide in your hand, so throwing it is a bit flashy I agree. I guess the idea here is he is staying outside of the range of the spear or severed spear, and she goes on the offensive, rather than waiting for him to make another cut, and since she no longer has a blade, but desires one, she is going for his.
@@writingref and first of al this is a duel in an massive historical attack she woudlnt throw the nagianata away cause there are multiple enemyes she would historically keep her distance from the enemy or depending if she was Offesnu brantch or any other
Ah, as usual, internet armchair experts in full force. This is a DEMONSTRATION. They aren't attacking or defending "for real", they are executing already existing kata (or making their own, but I think that is unlikely). So yes, even the more """"unrealistic""""" things such as throwing your weapon, jumping, spinning are part of the routine. As to why a kata where you throw your weapon exists, well, you'd have to ask the sensei who decided to write it down. From my own (very inexpert) point of view, its point is to teach adaptability in combat- in the scenario presented, the naginata user is at a disadvantage as all their attacks are blocked, possibly by a superior opponent. By throwing the weapon you achieve surprise and by using their own weapon to kill them you utilise your environment. But I could, of course, be mistaken about that.
For the record though, cutting through the haft of a polearm with a sword while you're under attack? A lot harder than you seem to believe.
Now, can you imagine if the lady throw the real naginata sharp edge straight to the man's neck when he is in open stance like that? He's dead already. This is another usage, although not recommended for all situation.
So cool⚔
Blazingly fast, i would love to see them in a hema style setting to test them out, perhaps against a sword user?
