    Naginata is the main weapon of the monk soldiers, and during the Warring States period, Japanese Buddhist temples had territories and were armed. Influential temples have vast territories and many followers, and have begun to have the same power as the landlord. Rebellion was caused in various places using believers all over Japan. Therefore, Nobunaga Oda slaughtered the temple and the monk soldiers. In addition, Naginata became a necessary skill for women who care for the landlord's wife and daughter, and became a means of self-defense.

      Hi. I'll give it a shot.
      Naginata is a competitive martial art which focuses only on the use of the weapon called naginata. It doesn't resemble a real fight and it isn't trying to.
      In real combat - as seen in classic Japanese schools, when a fighter enters close quarters, he has 3 ways to solve the situation: 1. Drop the naginata and do some empty-hand form (like grabbing the opponents arm, hitting or striking) 2. Drop the naginata and reach for a secondary weapon like a knife or a short sword 3. Perform a close quarters technique using the naginata.
      Since the modern naginata focuses only on the usage of naginata, the only option in close quarters is to do a naginata technique. And the two players often "wait" while applying pressure on the opponent, until an opportunity to strike shows up or until they are separated by a judge.
      Hope it helped :-)

    • @Cha4k
      @Cha4k 5 лет назад +47

      You cant score just by touching the blade on someone, It has to be a full strike.
      However you cant score by striking someone across the neck like that because its dangerous and you could cause serious injury.
      So some people simply ignore the blade resting there knowing that it wont score.
      Which is kind of annoying. There is always debate about if this should be a penalty or not.

  • @Densoro
    @Densoro 8 лет назад +21

    I'm trying to understand the pauses like at 0:20. They look like they're binding (is that what you call it in kendo? I only know European terms), but at 0:26 when the other fighter lowers her point, they just walk away from each other. So was :20 some kind of time-out? Were they discussing the validity of the blow, or do they leave that to the judges to figure out? In the SCA we have a lot of 'death by discussion' but idk if that's what I'm seeing here.
    They do the same thing at several points throughout the video (3:03, 3:37) and I keep trying to figure out what it is. Some kind of stand-off because they're too close to effectively attack -- so it's a 'quick draw' to retreat into striking range? But then at 3:59, the red fighter doesn't seem to be worried about the white fighter's point passing right in front of her neck, so maybe it's not a standoff after all...
    ...I'm clearly missing something XD But their skill is still quite evident.

    • @Shroosk
      @Shroosk 8 лет назад +35

      Densoro somtimes they stay close after a strike. There is no opportunit of attack at this distance. But if ever one is not aware, it is possible to strike when moving backward. Naginata is a polearm, you can only hit from a longer distance than kendo fight. When the blade is moving close to the neck, it was not a threat. Naginata is not like european fencing. Touching is not hurting. In order to strike a valid blow, you need to cut with help of your whole body motion. You also need to strike on valid part : most important are over the head, the throat, wrist, legs, with the valid part of the naginata : curving part of the blade (5cm long) or the white forward end (on the throat) or the naginata back end ( 20 to 25 cm from back end and only on legs)

    • @Aureliano5174
      @Aureliano5174 7 лет назад +18

      Hi, First, please remember that this is not a real naginata fight. In reality there are no rules, no scores, no honor and no right or wrong. Either you do what is needed to win or you die. Now, naginata is a long range fencing weapon by it's definition. Of course there are various techniques for using it in close combat but one would prefer to engage from a safe distance. So in reality what did samurai do when reaching to such close distance? Probably use a close-quarters naginata technique or draw a sword or a knife (kenjutsu\tantojutsu). Or use hand-to-hand techniques (jujutsu).
      Back to modern naginata, as we practice solely NAGINATA techniques we are limited to either use close-quarters naginata techniques or to retreat to the original distance. Doing anything else would be not be related to what we do and will also put our opponent in danger of injury.

      I'm not familiar with this particular sport but to my knowledge most fencing and kendo/hema-like systems and sports don't incorporate the kind of grappling you'd see in actual combat. Other issue is this is just wooden, an actual Naginata is gonna have a metal blade at the top so given the weight distribution, it might be impractical to wield it one handed.

    they should use real but slightly dull blade and full armor. that would be better so no prancing around...

      Even a blunt blade can be very dangerous, which can cut through a variety of materials that are analogue to human flesh. An impact from any weighted object can transfer enough energy through armour to break bones and cause other injury.

      It's not a real fight. All sports of Martial Arts are defined by rules and regulations.

      They're not swords. It's naginata. Naginata have curved blades.

      sleepy legend has it that naginata used broken/ discarded katana, hence the curve. females of samurai class used this for home defense upper class girls still practice in this.

      @@gulfrelay2249 While it's possible that in some rare occasions broken katanas were used to make naginatas, its definitely not the mainstream. The blade of the naginata differs from the katana in several ways and there is plenty of pictures from museums and also enough historical records to support that.
      Also - as far as I've seen - naginata is not restricted to "upper class". It's Integrated to the mainstream highschools in Japan and anyone can join a naginata club

    This "sport" is as useless as fencing. It is completely UNrealistic compared to real fighting with sharp, edged weapons. Seems like you would learn more dangerous moves that would get you killed rather than learning a fighting art that could save your life.
