If Hollywood had created that story... finding an abandoned, fully fueled B-17 sitting in an empty warehouse next to a desolate air field, practically ready to taxi...no one would believe it.
Getting rammed by a Enemy Plane, manage to land in an abandoned airfield, used a Captured B-17 and got home, then 58 years later they got to know the Pilot who rammed them and now out of Guilt, so many twists in one video i love it
Can you imagine being the commander at the base seeing a random, older model B-17 from a different squadron landing at your base, but the crew you sent off that morning in a B-17 from your squadron is getting out of it. He must've thought he was hallucinating.
Don't forget that it was fully intact so there's no reason for it to return without the rest of the formation too. "my plane suddenly aged mid flight, the Germans have a time beam" would have been one hell of a prank report
Heinrich Rosner's ramming is one that I always remember from the history channels Dogfights episode on this He rammed a B-24 cutting off the cockpit his plane then slide across the wing and crashed into another bomber after falling off eventually knocking that plane out of the sky as well and the most amazing part is he survived the whole thing
@@hanssovic The history channels show dogfights was the show I was addicted to growing up I always remember being glued to the TV whenever a new episode got released
Survival rates after ramming were around 50% or so. The Sturmbok Fw 190A were special aircraft with bullet proof glass canopy sides cockpit side amour and extra heavy Armour on the ammunition boxes. They also had a 30mm MK108 cannon which on average required 3 hits to bring down a B-17. The aircraft would approach to very close range and simply survive the Browning fire. If the B-17 were not destroyed they were ordered to ram the bombers (the pilots resented this and it was rescinded, they rammed on their pwn volition and didn't want orders, the ramming only became necessary if the guns jammed). It was found survival rates were better than 50%.
14:18 What a brilliant way to put another incredible story we can watch in this one! It's so realistic with the dialogue that it feels like this is something that the actual bomber crew would say
Until you realized its just a repeated scene, sometimes in reverse to probably increase the duration of it But tbh, i like that style of reccomendation! It just feels so realistic ikr, its like that those guys break the 4th wall and said something to us
I mean its pretty normal in times of war, Getting around 7-8 men home with experience is great to do. Especially with such a good pilot, And its +1 aircraft for the Allies. The Germans would have gotten it back and used it anyway
The little details, like the manufacturers logo on bomber pilots sun glasses, are cherry on the top to a great storytelling. Yarnhub, you are the MVP of the animated videos in youtube!
As soon as I saw the thumbnail, I knew it was about Klaus Hahns. I saw his story on the TV show Dogfights. He was one of the two surviving members of the Sonderkommando Elbe to be interviewed. The other two who were talked about were Heinrich Rosner, who took out two B-24s, one of them being the “Palace of Dallas”, and Heinrich Henkel, who took out the B-24 “Sacktime”. The other pilot to be interviewed was Heinrich Henkel. Heinrich Rosner survived the war, but sadly passed away before he could be interviewed.
“All he has is engine power” Makes me think of United Airlines Flight 232, Captain Al Haynes managed to control his plane when he no hydraulics or controls of his elevators, he and his crew somehow managed to fly his broken bird and get her to the airport to help. United Airlines Flight 232 and Wentz somehow both managed the impossible, two impossible landings made possible by incredible aviators! Can’t get over how Wentz and his team are the original _Top Gun_ and just YOINKED that spare B17, the chances of that are beyond amazing!
Also reminds me of JAL 123. Unfortunately in that case they lost a significant portion of the tail wing alongside the hydraulics, and the crew were not able to save it.
Na what a lot of people don't seem to understand too is how important roll actually is for turning. Especially with engines across both wings. You can still turn with that + throttle control, albeit barely, and one mistake can can easily cause a flatspin. Like don't get me wrong, he achieved an amazing landing, but there are actually quite a few stories with similar circumstances with safe landings Also for anyone wondering: Your roll comes from your main wing ailerons. They also still more than likely had control over the flaps which can also be used to help with rolling/turning.
Well done Yarnhub, well done. As always you outdid yourself with everything: the animation, the voice acting, the action and everything in between. I loved how you provided us with the perspective of both the crew of the B-17 and Klaus Hahn as well as the latter's motivation to show us the German side of the war and it really touched my heart that he didn't kill the B-17 crew. What's more heartbreaking about the Sonderkommando Elbe besides sacrificing so many young pilots in a last-ditch effort to turn the tide in Germany's favor is that it is reminescient of the Japanese kamikaze is that the war was already lost but still wanted to fight to the very end. one of the few pilots ever in history to land a plane with only engine control, let alone safely intact on its wheels. man's an absolute beast. unless you've flown a simulator, you have no idea how insanely hard it is to fly like that. turning veryyyyy slowly with engines. rising and falling veryyyyy slowly with speed. and at any moment, the slightest imbalance, like a bad twitch of the controls, or big gust of wind, can send it spiraling out of the sky. thankfully part of the stabilizer and rear wings will still intact and the ailerons still worked. with that said, it was stupid to try landing the plane like that. should've just flown over allied space and bailed. seriously. the tiniest imbalance. gone. and if it happened while low to the ground with the landing attempt, no chance to bail.

It takes a mountain of courage just to strap into an aircraft and push the throttle up especially in a 1940's war plan and then to take into battle is heroic in itself
When Yarnhub posts I drop everything. The realism and accuracy has gotten so good, when I saw the Ray-Ban logo on the pilot's glasses which were standard at the time for USAAF at the time, amazing.
I like how I always get treated with not only B-17 content but each one has some Masters of the air charm sprinkled into each video, keep up the great work🎉👏👍😁
The German Sonderkommando Elbe were not like the Japanese Kamikazes as they were supposed to jump just before striking the target. The Germans quickly dropped this as the results were very poor.
Unlike the Kamikaze the Germans carried parachutes. They were told to ram the tail or cut it off and then bail out. Experience with Stormbok Fw 190 which often rammed on the rare occasions their 30mm guns jammed was a better than 50% survival rate.
@@thomasb1889 statistically, it’s about kill ratios or exchange rates. If you can bring down a B-17 for the cost of one fighter plane and half a pilot that’s worthwhile. However, in practice the pilots didn’t have the skill to get an intercept

Read about the story before you comment
It takes a mountain of courage just to strap into an aircraft and push the throttle up especially in a 1940's war plan and then to take into battle is heroic in itself
Hey fellow night owl Europeans
Hello I'm an American and it is sorta late for us here as well for me it's about 8pm

When Yarnhub posts I drop everything.
The realism and accuracy has gotten so good, when I saw the Ray-Ban logo on the pilot's glasses which were standard at the time for USAAF at the time, amazing.
Question. Why do the B-17's have yellow tail fins and red propellers? 5:22
It’s just the squadron paint schemes, I don’t know what one, but yeah I’ve seen that paint scheme before.
@@Vice1-4 Huh.
German: What is that yellow clo- OHH!!!
I like how I always get treated with not only B-17 content but each one has some Masters of the air charm sprinkled into each video, keep up the great work🎉👏👍😁
poor tail gunner:( 4:06
Careful, Yarn. Keep this up and you might find yourself as a full-fledged movie production company
@@williamzk9083Better than 50% survival is not an acceptable rate so that survival rate was why the program was cancelled.
@@thomasb1889 statistically, it’s about kill ratios or exchange rates. If you can bring down a B-17 for the cost of one fighter plane and half a pilot that’s worthwhile. However, in practice the pilots didn’t have the skill to get an intercept
@@williamzk9083 However, they realized that they would run out of well trained pilots before the Americans ran out of B-17's.
@@williamzk9083 I disagree that exchange rate of pilots for planes would have run the Germans out of quality
pilots quickly. That was why they stopped.
why RUclips recommend this channel now😭
this is sooo cool!!!
They traded a B-17G for a B-17F.
More like trading a b-17 for a b-17f
This is FIREE 🔥🔥 GREAT JOB YARNHUB
Sonnderkommando Elbe.
I’ve heard of them from the dogfight documentary on the history channel
